¹⁸ You show steadfast love to the thousandth generation^[a] but repay the guilt of parents into the laps of their children after them, O great and mighty God whose name is the Lord of hosts,^(A)

⁹ You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents to the third and fourth generation of those who reject me^{(A) 10} but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation^[a] of those who love me and keep my commandments.^(B)

⁹ Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who maintains covenant loyalty with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,^{(A) 10} and who repays in their own person those who reject him. He does not delay but repays in their own person those who reject him.

²⁵ Then the people as a whole answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”^(A)

³² Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors. ³³ You snakes, you brood of vipers! How can you escape the judgment of hell?^{[a] 34} For this reason I send you prophets, sages, and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, ³⁵ so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. ³⁶ Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation.
