The Lord Will Turn Mourning to Joy

31 (A)“At that time, declares the Lord, (B)I will be the God of all the clans of Israel, and they shall be my people.”

Thus says the Lord:
“The people who survived the sword
    found grace in the wilderness;
(C)when Israel sought for rest,
    the Lord appeared to him[a] from far away.
(D)I have loved you with an everlasting love;
    therefore (E)I have continued (F)my faithfulness to you.
(G)Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
    O virgin Israel!
(H)Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines
    and shall go forth in (I)the dance of the merrymakers.
(J)Again you shall plant vineyards
    on the mountains of Samaria;
the planters shall plant
    and shall enjoy the fruit.
For there shall be a day when watchmen will call
    in (K)the hill country of Ephraim:
(L)‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
    to the Lord our God.’”

For thus says the Lord:
(M)“Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob,
    and raise shouts for (N)the chief of the nations;
proclaim, give praise, and say,
    (O)‘O Lord, save your people,
    the remnant of Israel.’
Behold, I will bring them (P)from the north country
    and (Q)gather them from (R)the farthest parts of the earth,
among them (S)the blind and the lame,
    the pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together;
    a great company, they shall return here.
(T)With weeping they shall come,
    (U)and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back,
I will make them (V)walk by brooks of water,
    (W)in a straight path in which they shall not stumble,
for (X)I am a father to Israel,
    and Ephraim is (Y)my firstborn.

10 “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
    and declare it in the coastlands far away;
say, ‘He who scattered Israel will (Z)gather him,
    and will keep him (AA)as a shepherd keeps his flock.’
11 (AB)For the Lord has ransomed Jacob
    and has redeemed him from (AC)hands too strong for him.
12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
    (AD)and they shall be radiant (AE)over the goodness of the Lord,
(AF)over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
    and over the young of the flock and the herd;
(AG)their life shall be like a watered garden,
    (AH)and they shall languish no more.
13 (AI)Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,
    and the young men and the old shall be merry.
(AJ)I will turn their mourning into joy;
    I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
14 (AK)I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance,
    and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness,
declares the Lord.”

15 Thus says the Lord:
(AL)“A voice is heard in (AM)Ramah,
    lamentation and bitter weeping.
(AN)Rachel is weeping for her children;
    she refuses to be comforted for her children,
    (AO)because they are no more.”

16 Thus says the Lord:
“Keep your voice from weeping,
    and your eyes from tears,
for there is a reward for your work,
declares the Lord,
    and (AP)they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 (AQ)There is hope for your future,
declares the Lord,
    and your children shall come back to their own country.
18 I have heard (AR)Ephraim grieving,
‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined,
    like an untrained calf;
(AS)bring me back that I may be restored,
    for you are the Lord my God.
19 For after (AT)I had turned away, I relented,
    and after I was instructed, (AU)I struck my thigh;
(AV)I was ashamed, and I was confounded,
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 (AW)Is Ephraim my dear son?
    (AX)Is he my darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
    I do remember him still.
(AY)Therefore my heart[b] yearns for him;
    I will surely have mercy on him,
declares the Lord.

21 (AZ)“Set up road markers for yourself;
    make yourself guideposts;
(BA)consider well the highway,
    (BB)the road by which you went.
Return, O virgin Israel,
    return to these your cities.
22 (BC)How long will you waver,
    (BD)O faithless daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:
    a woman encircles a man.”

23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, (BE)when I restore their fortunes:

(BF)“‘The Lord bless you, (BG)O habitation of righteousness,
    (BH)O holy hill!’

24 (BI)And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and (BJ)the farmers and those who wander with their flocks. 25 For I will (BK)satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”

26 At this I awoke and looked, and my sleep was pleasant to me.

27 (BL)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when (BM)I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with (BN)the seed of man and the seed of beast. 28 And it shall come to pass that (BO)as I have watched over them (BP)to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring harm, (BQ)so I will watch over them (BR)to build and to plant, declares the Lord. 29 In those days they shall no longer say:

(BS)“‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children's teeth are set on edge.’

30 (BT)But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

The New Covenant

31 (BU)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make (BV)a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when (BW)I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, (BX)though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 (BY)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: (BZ)I will put my law within them, and I will write it (CA)on their hearts. (CB)And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ (CC)for they shall all know me, (CD)from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For (CE)I will forgive their iniquity, and (CF)I will remember their sin no more.”

35 Thus says the Lord,
who (CG)gives the sun for light by day
    and (CH)the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    (CI)the Lord of hosts is his name:
36 (CJ)“If this fixed order departs
    from before me, declares the Lord,
then shall the offspring of Israel cease
    from being a nation before me forever.”

37 Thus says the Lord:
“If the heavens above can be measured,
    and the foundations of the earth below can be explored,
(CK)then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel
    for all that they have done,
declares the Lord.”

38 (CL)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when the city shall be rebuilt for the Lord (CM)from the Tower of Hananel to (CN)the Corner Gate. 39 (CO)And the measuring line shall go out farther, straight to the hill Gareb, and shall then turn to Goah. 40 (CP)The whole valley of the dead bodies and the ashes, and all the fields as far as the (CQ)brook Kidron, to the corner of (CR)the Horse Gate toward the east, (CS)shall be sacred to the Lord. (CT)It shall not be plucked up or overthrown anymore forever.”

God Is Our Fortress

The Priestly Order of Melchizedek

For this (A)Melchizedek, king of (B)Salem, priest of (C)the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother (D)or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

See how great this man was to whom Abraham (E)the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils! And (F)those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers,[a] though these also are descended from Abraham. But this man (G)who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed (H)him who had the promises. It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one (I)of whom it is testified that (J)he lives. One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, 10 for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.

Jesus Compared to Melchizedek

11 (K)Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? 12 For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. 13 For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended (L)from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.

15 This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is witnessed of him,

(M)“You are a priest forever,
    after the order of Melchizedek.”

18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside (N)because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for (O)the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, (P)a better hope is introduced, through which (Q)we draw near to God.

20 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, 21 but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him:

(R)“The Lord has sworn
    and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest forever.’”

22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of (S)a better covenant.

23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues (T)forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost[b] (U)those who draw near to God (V)through him, since he always lives (W)to make intercession for them.

26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, (X)holy, innocent, unstained, (Y)separated from sinners, and (Z)exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, (AA)first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this (AB)once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men (AC)in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made (AD)perfect forever.

Jesus, High Priest of a Better Covenant

Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, (AE)one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in (AF)the true tent[c] that the Lord (AG)set up, not man. For (AH)every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus (AI)it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve (AJ)a copy and (AK)shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, (AL)“See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” But as it is, Christ[d] has obtained a ministry that is (AM)as much more excellent than the old as (AN)the covenant (AO)he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. (AP)For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

For he finds fault with them when he says:[e]

(AQ)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
    when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel
    and with the house of Judah,
not like the covenant that I made with their fathers
    on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.
For they did not continue in my covenant,
    and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
10 (AR)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
    after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws into their minds,
    and (AS)write them on their hearts,
and I will be their God,
    and they shall be my people.
11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor
    and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
for they shall (AT)all know me,
    from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
    (AU)and I will remember their sins no more.”

13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And (AV)what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

The Earthly Holy Place

Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and (AW)an earthly place of holiness. For (AX)a tent[f] was prepared, the first section, in which were (AY)the lampstand and (AZ)the table and (BA)the bread of the Presence.[g] It is called the Holy Place. Behind (BB)the second curtain was a second section[h] called the Most Holy Place, having the golden (BC)altar of incense and (BD)the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was (BE)a golden urn holding the manna, and (BF)Aaron's staff that budded, and (BG)the tablets of the covenant. Above it were (BH)the cherubim of glory overshadowing (BI)the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

These preparations having thus been made, (BJ)the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, but into the second only (BK)the high priest goes, and he but (BL)once a year, and not without taking blood, (BM)which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that (BN)the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age).[i] According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered (BO)that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, 10 but deal only with (BP)food and drink and (BQ)various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.

Redemption Through the Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest (BR)of the good things that have come,[j] then through (BS)the greater and more perfect tent ((BT)not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he (BU)entered (BV)once for all into the holy places, not by means of (BW)the blood of goats and calves but (BX)by means of his own blood, (BY)thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if (BZ)the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with (CA)the ashes of a heifer, sanctify[k] for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will (CB)the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit (CC)offered himself without blemish to God, (CD)purify our[l] conscience (CE)from dead works (CF)to serve the living God.

15 Therefore he is (CG)the mediator of a new covenant, so that (CH)those who are called may (CI)receive the promised eternal inheritance, (CJ)since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.[m] 16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For (CK)a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated (CL)without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took (CM)the blood of calves and goats, (CN)with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (CO)“This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both (CP)the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and (CQ)without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

23 Thus it was necessary for (CR)the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places (CS)made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God (CT)on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as (CU)the high priest enters (CV)the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, (CW)he has appeared (CX)once for all (CY)at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as (CZ)it is appointed for man to die once, and (DA)after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once (DB)to bear the sins of (DC)many, will appear (DD)a second time, (DE)not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly (DF)waiting for him.
