¹⁹ “I myself said,

3 See what great love^(A) the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!^(B) And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.^{(C) 2} Dear friends,^(D) now we are children of God,^(E) and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears,^[a](F) we shall be like him,^(G) for we shall see him as he is.^{(H) 3} All who have this hope in him purify themselves,^(I) just as he is pure.^(J)

³⁹ I will give them singleness^(A) of heart and action, so that they will always fear^(B) me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them. ⁴⁰ I will make an everlasting covenant^(C) with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire^(D) them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.^(E)

³⁹ But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

⁵ he^[a] predestined^(A) us for adoption to sonship^[b](B) through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure^(C) and will—

⁵ to redeem^(A) those under the law, that we might receive adoption^(B) to sonship.^{[a](C) 6} Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son^(D) into our hearts,^(E) the Spirit who calls out, “Abba,^[b] Father.”^{(F) 7} So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.^(G)
