² So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah^(A) and to all those living in Jerusalem:

¹¹ “Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, ‘This is what the Lord says: Look! I am preparing a disaster^(A) for you and devising a plan^(B) against you. So turn^(C) from your evil ways,^(D) each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.’^(E)

¹⁴ Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. ¹⁵ Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.”

Jeremiah Thrown Into a Cistern

38 Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur^(A), Jehukal^[a](B) son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said, ² “This is what the Lord says: ‘Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague,^(C) but whoever goes over to the Babylonians^[b] will live. They will escape with their lives; they will live.’^(D)

¹³ “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell^(A) the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, ‘Will you not learn a lesson^(B) and obey my words?’ declares the Lord.

² “This is what the Lord says: Stand in the courtyard^(A) of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord.^(B) Tell^(C) them everything I command you; do not omit^(D) a word.

¹⁴ Jeremiah then returned from Topheth, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy, and stood in the court^(A) of the Lord’s temple and said to all the people, ¹⁵ “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘Listen! I am going to bring on this city and all the villages around it every disaster^(B) I pronounced against them, because they were stiff-necked^(C) and would not listen^(D) to my words.’”
