15 Then the Lord said to me, “Take once more the equipment of (A)a foolish shepherd. 16 For behold, I am raising up in the land a shepherd (B)who does not care for those being destroyed, or seek the young or heal the maimed or nourish the healthy, but (C)devours the flesh of the fat ones, tearing off even their hoofs.

17 (D)“Woe to my worthless shepherd,
    (E)who deserts the flock!
May the sword strike his arm
    and (F)his right eye!
Let his arm be wholly withered,
    his right eye utterly blinded!”

(A)“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord God: (B)Ah, shepherds of Israel (C)who have been feeding yourselves! (D)Should not shepherds feed the sheep? (E)You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, (F)you slaughter the fat ones, but you do not feed the sheep. (G)The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, (H)the injured you have not bound up, (I)the strayed you have not brought back, (J)the lost you have not sought, and with force and (K)harshness you have ruled them. (L)So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and (M)they became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered; they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, (N)with none to search or seek for them.

“Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: (O)As I live, declares the Lord God, surely because (P)my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd, and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep, therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 Thus says the Lord God, (Q)Behold, I am against the shepherds, and (R)I will require my sheep at their hand and (S)put a stop to their feeding the sheep. (T)No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. (U)I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them.

42 (A)“But woe to you Pharisees! For (B)you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect (C)justice and (D)the love of God. (E)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For (F)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! (G)For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45 One of (H)the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you (I)lawyers also! For (J)you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (K)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 (L)So you are witnesses and you (M)consent to the deeds of (N)your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore also (O)the Wisdom of God said, (P)‘I will send them (Q)prophets and apostles, (R)some of whom they will (S)kill and persecute,’ 50 so that (T)the blood of all the prophets, shed (U)from the foundation of the world, may be (V)charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of (W)Abel to the blood of (X)Zechariah, who perished between (Y)the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be (Z)required of this generation. 52 Woe to you (AA)lawyers! (AB)For you have taken away the key of (AC)knowledge. You (AD)did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”

Israel's Irresponsible Leaders

(A)All you beasts of the field, come to devour—
    all you beasts in the forest.
10 (B)His watchmen are blind;
    they are all without knowledge;
they are all silent (C)dogs;
    they cannot bark,
dreaming, lying down,
    loving to slumber.
11 (D)The dogs have a mighty appetite;
    they never have enough.
But (E)they are shepherds who have no understanding;
    they have all turned to their own way,
    (F)each to his own gain, one and all.
12 (G)“Come,” they say, “let me get wine;
    let us fill ourselves with strong drink;
(H)and tomorrow will be like this day,
    great beyond measure.”

13 “But woe (A)to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you (B)shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you (C)neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.[a] 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single (D)proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a (E)child of (F)hell[b] as yourselves.

16 “Woe to (G)you, (H)blind guides, who say, (I)‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or (J)the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by (K)the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or (L)the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by (M)him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by (N)heaven swears by (O)the throne of God and by (P)him who sits upon it.

23 (Q)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (R)you tithe mint and dill and (S)cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: (T)justice and mercy and faithfulness. (U)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing (V)a camel!

25 (W)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For (X)you clean the outside of (Y)the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of (Z)greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of (AA)the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 (AB)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like (AC)whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and (AD)all uncleanness. 28 So you also (AE)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of (AF)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

(G)They have made no distinction between the holy and the common, neither have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean, and (H)they have disregarded my Sabbaths, (I)so that I am profaned among them. 27 (J)Her princes in her midst are like wolves (K)tearing the prey, (L)shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain. 28 And (M)her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, (N)seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord God,’ when the Lord has not spoken. 29 The people of the land (O)have practiced extortion and committed robbery. for I will bring disaster upon them

declares the Lord.
13 In the prophets of (F)Samaria
    (G)I saw an unsavory thing:
(H)they prophesied by Baal

14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen a horrible thing:

for from the prophets of Jerusalem
    ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”
