24 (A)“As I live, declares the Lord, though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, were (B)the signet ring on my right hand, yet I would tear you off 25 and (C)give you (D)into the hand of those who seek your life, into the hand of those of whom you are afraid, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of the Chaldeans. 26 (E)I will hurl you and (F)the mother who bore you into another country, where you were not born, and there you shall die. 27 But to the land to which they will long to return, there they shall not return.”

28 Is this man (G)Coniah a despised, broken pot,
    a (H)vessel no one cares for?
Why are he and his children hurled and cast
    into a (I)land that they do not know?
29 (J)O land, land, land,
    hear the word of the Lord!
30 Thus says the Lord:
“Write this man down as (K)childless,
    a man who shall not succeed in his days,
(L)for none of his offspring shall succeed
    (M)in sitting on the throne of David
    and ruling again in Judah.”

The Righteous Branch

23 (N)“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning (O)the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. (P)Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord. (Q)Then I will gather the remnant of my flock (R)out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, (S)and they shall be fruitful and multiply. (T)I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the Lord.

(U)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous (V)Branch, and (W)he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and (X)Israel will (Y)dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: (Z)‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

(AA)“Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when they shall no longer say, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ but ‘As the Lord lives who brought up and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he[a] had driven them.’ Then they shall dwell in their own land.”

Lying Prophets

Concerning the prophets:

(AB)My heart is broken within me;
    (AC)all my bones shake;
I am like a drunken man,
    like a man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
    and because of his holy words.
10 (AD)For the land is full of adulterers;
    (AE)because of the curse (AF)the land mourns,
    and (AG)the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.
(AH)Their course is evil,
    and their might is not right.
11 (AI)“Both prophet and priest are ungodly;
    even (AJ)in my house I have found their evil,
declares the Lord.
12 (AK)Therefore their way shall be to them
    like slippery paths (AL)in the darkness,
    into which they shall be driven and fall,
for I will bring disaster upon them
    (AM)in the year of their punishment,
declares the Lord.
13 In the prophets of (AN)Samaria
    (AO)I saw an unsavory thing:
(AP)they prophesied by Baal
    (AQ)and led my people Israel astray.
14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen a horrible thing:
(AR)they commit adultery and walk in lies;
    (AS)they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
    so that no one turns from his evil;
(AT)all of them have become like Sodom to me,
    (AU)and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
15 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:
(AV)“Behold, I will feed them with bitter food
    (AW)and give them (AX)poisoned water to drink,
for from the prophets of Jerusalem
    ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”

16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, (AY)filling you with vain hopes. (AZ)They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, (BA)‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who (BB)stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, (BC)‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”

18 For (BD)who among them has stood in the council of the Lord
    to see and to hear his word,
    or who has paid attention to his word and listened?
19 (BE)Behold, the storm of the Lord!
    Wrath has gone forth,
(BF)a whirling tempest;
    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
20 (BG)The anger of the Lord will not turn back
    until he has executed and (BH)accomplished
    the intents of his heart.
(BI)In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

21 (BJ)“I did not send the prophets,
    yet they ran;
I did not speak to them,
    yet they prophesied.
22 (BK)But if they had stood in my council,
    then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
(BL)and they would have turned them from their evil way,
    and (BM)from the evil of their deeds.

Footnotes

  1. Jeremiah 23:8 Septuagint; Hebrew I

17 Let the elders (A)who rule well be considered worthy of (B)double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, (C)“You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and, (D)“The laborer deserves his wages.” 19 Do not admit a charge against an elder except (E)on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20 As for those who persist in sin, (F)rebuke them in the presence of all, (G)so that the rest may stand in fear. 21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels (H)I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging, (I)doing nothing from partiality. 22 (J)Do not be hasty in the (K)laying on of hands, nor (L)take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 23 (No longer drink only water, but (M)use a little wine (N)for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.) 24 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25 So also good works are conspicuous, and (O)even those that are not cannot remain hidden.
