Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah Again

14 King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the Lord. The king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you a question; hide nothing from me.” 15 Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.” 16 Then King Zedekiah swore (A)secretly to Jeremiah, (B)“As the Lord lives, (C)who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of (D)these men who seek your life.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: (E)If you will surrender to (F)the officials of the king of Babylon, (G)then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. 18 But if you do not surrender to (H)the officials of the king of Babylon, (I)then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, (J)and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.” 19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans (K)who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.” 20 Jeremiah said, “You shall not be given to them. Obey now the voice of the Lord in what I say to you, (L)and it shall be well with you, and your life shall be spared. 21 But if you refuse to (M)surrender, this is the vision which the Lord has shown to me: 22 Behold, all the women left in the house of the king of Judah were being led out to the officials of the king of Babylon and were saying,

(N)“‘Your trusted friends have deceived you
    and prevailed against you;
now that your feet are sunk in the mud,
    they turn away from you.’

23 All your wives and (O)your sons shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned with fire.”

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die. 25 If (P)the officials hear that I have spoken with you and come to you and say to you, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; hide nothing from us and we will not put you to death,’ 26 then you shall say to them, (Q)‘I made a humble plea to the king that he would not send me back to the house of Jonathan to die there.’” 27 Then all the officials came to Jeremiah and asked him, and he answered them as the king had instructed him. So they stopped speaking with him, for the conversation had not been overheard.

Remember the (A)wondrous works that he has done,
    his miracles, and (B)the judgments he uttered,
O offspring of (C)Abraham, his servant,
    children of Jacob, his (D)chosen ones!

He is the Lord our God;
    his (E)judgments are in all the earth.
He (F)remembers his covenant forever,
    the word that he commanded, for (G)a thousand generations,
(H)the covenant that he made with Abraham,
    his (I)sworn promise to Isaac,
10 which he confirmed to (J)Jacob as a statute,
    to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11 saying, (K)“To you I will give the land of Canaan
    as (L)your portion for an inheritance.”

12 When they were (M)few in number,
    of little account, and (N)sojourners in it,
13 wandering from nation to nation,
    from one kingdom to another people,
14 he (O)allowed no one to oppress them;
    he (P)rebuked kings on their account,
15 saying, (Q)“Touch not my anointed ones,
    do my prophets no harm!”

16 When he (R)summoned a famine on the land
    and (S)broke all supply[a] of bread,
17 he had (T)sent a man ahead of them,
    Joseph, who was (U)sold as a slave.
18 His (V)feet were hurt with fetters;
    his neck was put in a collar of iron;
19 until (W)what he had said came to pass,
    the word of the Lord (X)tested him.
20 (Y)The king sent and (Z)released him;
    the ruler of the peoples set him free;
21 he (AA)made him lord of his house
    and ruler of all his possessions,
22 to bind[b] his princes at his pleasure
    and to teach his elders wisdom.

23 Then (AB)Israel came to Egypt;
    Jacob (AC)sojourned in (AD)the land of Ham.
24 And the Lord (AE)made his people very fruitful
    and made them stronger than their foes.
25 He (AF)turned their hearts to hate his people,
    to (AG)deal craftily with his servants.

26 He (AH)sent Moses, his servant,
    and Aaron, (AI)whom he had chosen.
27 (AJ)They performed his signs among them
    and miracles in (AK)the land of Ham.
28 He (AL)sent darkness, and made the land dark;
    they (AM)did not rebel[c] against his words.
29 He turned their waters into blood
    and (AN)caused their fish to die.
30 Their land swarmed with frogs,
    even in (AO)the chambers of their kings.
31 He spoke, and there came (AP)swarms of flies,
    (AQ)and gnats throughout their country.
32 He gave them hail for rain,
    and fiery (AR)lightning bolts through their land.
33 He struck down their vines and fig trees,
    and (AS)shattered the trees of their country.
34 He spoke, and the (AT)locusts came,
    young locusts without number,
35 which devoured all the vegetation in their land
    and ate up the fruit of their ground.
36 He (AU)struck down all the firstborn in their land,
    (AV)the firstfruits of all their strength.

37 Then he brought out Israel with (AW)silver and gold,
    and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.
38 (AX)Egypt was glad when they departed,
    for (AY)dread of them had fallen upon it.

39 He (AZ)spread a cloud for a covering,
    and fire to give light by night.
40 (BA)They asked, and he (BB)brought quail,
    and gave them (BC)bread from heaven in abundance.
41 He opened the rock, and (BD)water gushed out;
    it flowed through (BE)the desert like a river.
42 For he (BF)remembered his holy promise,
    and (BG)Abraham, his servant.

43 So he brought his people out with joy,
    his (BH)chosen ones with (BI)singing.
44 And he (BJ)gave them the lands of the nations,
    and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples' toil,
45 that they might (BK)keep his statutes
    and (BL)observe his laws.
(BM)Praise the Lord!

Jehoshaphat's Prayer

20 After this (A)the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them some of the Meunites,[a] came against Jehoshaphat for battle. Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A great multitude is coming against you from Edom,[b] from beyond the sea; and, behold, they are in (B)Hazazon-tamar” (that is, (C)Engedi). Then Jehoshaphat was afraid and set his face (D)to seek the Lord, and (E)proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. And Judah assembled to seek help from the Lord; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.

And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, and said, “O Lord, God of our fathers, are you not (F)God in heaven? You (G)rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. (H)In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you. Did you not, our God, (I)drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it forever to the descendants of (J)Abraham your friend? And they have lived in it and have built for you in it a sanctuary for your name, saying, (K)‘If disaster comes upon us, the sword, judgment,[c] or pestilence, or famine, (L)we will stand before this house and before you—(M)for your name is in this house—and cry out to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’ 10 And now behold, the men of (N)Ammon and Moab and (O)Mount Seir, whom (P)you would not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, (Q)and whom they avoided and did not destroy— 11 behold, they reward us (R)by coming to drive us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit. 12 O our God, will you not (S)execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but (T)our eyes are on you.”

13 Meanwhile all Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14 And (U)the Spirit of the Lord came[d] upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15 And he said, “Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the Lord to you, (V)‘Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed at this great horde, (W)for the battle is not yours but God's. 16 Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of (X)the valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel. 17 (Y)You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ (Z)Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, (AA)and the Lord will be with you.”

18 Then Jehoshaphat (AB)bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. 19 And the Levites, of the (AC)Kohathites and the (AD)Korahites, stood up to praise the Lord, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice.

20 And they rose early in the morning and went out into (AE)the wilderness of Tekoa. And when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! (AF)Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed.” 21 And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him (AG)in holy attire, as they went before the army, and say,

(AH)“Give thanks to the Lord,
    for his steadfast love endures forever.”

22 And when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set (AI)an ambush against the men of (AJ)Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. 23 For the men of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, devoting them to destruction, and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, (AK)they all helped to destroy one another.

The Lord Delivers Judah

24 When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they looked toward the horde, and behold, there[e] were dead bodies lying on the ground; none had escaped. 25 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their spoil, they found among them, in great numbers, goods, clothing, and precious things, which they took for themselves until they could carry no more. They were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much. 26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah,[f] for there they blessed the Lord. Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Beracah to this day. 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, returning to Jerusalem with joy, (AL)for the Lord had made them rejoice over their enemies. 28 They came to Jerusalem with harps and lyres and trumpets, to the house of the Lord. 29 (AM)And the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, (AN)for his God gave him rest all around.
