18 Today I have made you(A) a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land.

But as for me, I am filled with power,
with the Spirit of the Lord,
    and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob his transgression,
    to Israel his sin.(A)

Hear this, you leaders of Jacob,
    you rulers of Israel,
who despise justice
and distort all that is right;(B)

“This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire(A) of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched(B) out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.(C)

27 After the king burned the scroll containing the words that Baruch had written at Jeremiah’s dictation,(A) the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28 “Take another scroll(B) and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned up. 29 Also tell Jehoiakim king of Judah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You burned that scroll and said, “Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and wipe from it(C) both man and beast?”(D) 30 Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim(E) king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on the throne of David; his body will be thrown out(F) and exposed(G) to the heat by day and the frost by night.(H) 31 I will punish him and his children(I) and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every disaster(J) I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.(K)’”

32 So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated,(L) Baruch wrote(M) on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned(N) in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.

21 “I will deliver Zedekiah(D) king of Judah and his officials(E) into the hands of their enemies(F) who want to kill them, to the army of the king of Babylon,(G) which has withdrawn(H) from you. 22 I am going to give the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to this city. They will fight against it, take(I) it and burn(J) it down. And I will lay waste(K) the towns of Judah so no one can live there.”

12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials(A) and all the people: “The Lord sent me to prophesy(B) against this house and this city all the things you have heard.(C) 13 Now reform(D) your ways and your actions and obey(E) the Lord your God. Then the Lord will relent(F) and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands;(G) do with me whatever you think is good and right. 15 Be assured, however, that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood(H) on yourselves and on this city and on those who live in it, for in truth the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words(I) in your hearing.”

‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am about to turn(A) against you the weapons of war that are in your hands, which you are using to fight the king of Babylon and the Babylonians[a] who are outside the wall besieging(B) you. And I will gather them inside this city. I myself will fight(C) against you with an outstretched hand(D) and a mighty arm(E) in furious anger and in great wrath. I will strike(F) down those who live in this city—both man and beast—and they will die of a terrible plague.(G) After that, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah(H) king of Judah, his officials and the people in this city who survive the plague,(I) sword and famine, into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon(J) and to their enemies(K) who want to kill them.(L) He will put them to the sword;(M) he will show them no mercy or pity or compassion.’(N)

“Furthermore, tell the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: See, I am setting before you the way of life(O) and the way of death. Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague.(P) But whoever goes out and surrenders(Q) to the Babylonians who are besieging you will live; they will escape with their lives.(R) 10 I have determined to do this city harm(S) and not good, declares the Lord. It will be given into the hands(T) of the king of Babylon, and he will destroy it with fire.’(U)

11 “Moreover, say to the royal house(V) of Judah, ‘Hear the word of the Lord. 12 This is what the Lord says to you, house of David:

“‘Administer justice(W) every morning;
rescue from the hand of the oppressor(X)
the one who has been robbed,
or my wrath will break out and burn like fire(Y)
because of the evil(Z) you have done—
burn with no one to quench(AA) it.
13 I am against(AB) you, Jerusalem,
you who live above this valley(AC)
on the rocky plateau, declares the Lord
you who say, “Who can come against us?
    Who can enter our refuge?”(AD)
14 I will punish you as your deeds(AE) deserve,
    declares the Lord.
I will kindle a fire(AF) in your forests(AG)
that will consume everything around you.’”

Judgment Against Wicked Kings

22 This is what the Lord says: “Go down to the palace of the king(AH) of Judah and proclaim this message there: ‘Hear(AI) the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit on David’s throne(AJ)—you, your officials and your people who come through these gates.(AK) This is what the Lord says: Do what is just(AL) and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor(AM) the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow,(AN) and do not shed innocent blood(AO) in this place. For if you are careful to carry out these commands, then kings(AP) who sit on David’s throne will come through the gates of this palace, riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by their officials and their people. But if you do not obey(AQ) these commands, declares the Lord, I swear(AR) by myself that this palace will become a ruin.’”

For this is what the Lord says about the palace of the king of Judah:

“Though you are like Gilead(AS) to me,
    like the summit of Lebanon,(AT)
I will surely make you like a wasteland,(AU)
    like towns not inhabited.
I will send destroyers(AV) against you,
    each man with his weapons,
and they will cut(AW) up your fine cedar beams
and throw them into the fire.(AX)

“People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this great city?’(AY) And the answer will be: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God and have worshiped and served other gods.(AZ)’”

10 Do not weep for the dead(BA) king or mourn(BB) his loss;
rather, weep bitterly for him who is exiled,
because he will never return(BC)
nor see his native land again.

11 For this is what the Lord says about Shallum[b](BD) son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: “He will never return. 12 He will die(BE) in the place where they have led him captive; he will not see this land again.”

13 “Woe(BF) to him who builds(BG) his palace by unrighteousness,
    his upper rooms by injustice,
making his own people work for nothing,
not paying(BH) them for their labor.
14 He says, ‘I will build myself a great palace(BI)
    with spacious upper rooms.’
So he makes large windows in it,
    panels it with cedar(BJ)
    and decorates it in red.(BK)

15 “Does it make you a king
to have more and more cedar?
Did not your father have food and drink?
He did what was right and just,(BL)
so all went well(BM) with him.
16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy,(BN)
    and so all went well.
Is that not what it means to know(BO) me?”
    declares the Lord.
17 “But your eyes and your heart
are set only on dishonest gain,(BP)
on shedding innocent blood(BQ)
    and on oppression and extortion.”(BR)

18 Therefore this is what the Lord says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:

“They will not mourn(BS) for him:
‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’
They will not mourn for him:
‘Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!’
19 He will have the burial(BT) of a donkey—
    dragged away and thrown(BU)
    outside the gates of Jerusalem.”

20 “Go up to Lebanon and cry out,(BV)
let your voice be heard in Bashan,(BW)
cry out from Abarim,(BX)
for all your allies(BY) are crushed.
21 I warned you when you felt secure,(BZ)
but you said, ‘I will not listen!’
This has been your way from your youth;(CA)
    you have not obeyed(CB) me.
22 The wind(CC) will drive all your shepherds(CD) away,
and your allies(CE) will go into exile.
Then you will be ashamed and disgraced(CF)
    because of all your wickedness.
23 You who live in ‘Lebanon,[c](CG)
who are nestled in cedar buildings,
how you will groan when pangs come upon you,
pain(CH) like that of a woman in labor!

24 “As surely as I live,” declares the Lord, “even if you, Jehoiachin[d](CI) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring(CJ) on my right hand, I would still pull you off. 25 I will deliver(CK) you into the hands of those who want to kill you, those you fear—Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Babylonians.[e] 26 I will hurl(CL) you and the mother(CM) who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die. 27 You will never come back to the land you long to return(CN) to.”

28 Is this man Jehoiachin(CO) a despised, broken pot,(CP)
    an object no one wants?
Why will he and his children be hurled(CQ) out,
cast into a land(CR) they do not know?
29 O land,(CS) land, land,
hear the word of the Lord!
30 This is what the Lord says:
“Record this man as if childless,(CT)
a man who will not prosper(CU) in his lifetime,
for none of his offspring(CV) will prosper,
none will sit on the throne(CW) of David
    or rule anymore in Judah.”
