12 “For thus says the Lord:
(A)Your hurt is incurable,
    (B)and your wound is grievous.
13 There is none to uphold your cause,
    no medicine for your wound,
    (C)no healing for you.
14 (D)All your lovers have forgotten you;
    they care nothing for you;
for I have dealt you the blow of (E)an enemy,
    the punishment (F)of a merciless foe,
because your guilt is great,
    (G)because your sins are flagrant.
15 (H)Why do you cry out over your hurt?
    (I)Your pain is incurable.
Because your guilt is great,
    (J)because your sins are flagrant,
    I have done these things to you.
16 (K)Therefore all who devour you shall be devoured,
    and (L)all your foes, every one of them, shall go into captivity;
(M)those who plunder you shall be plundered,
    (N)and all who prey on you I will make a prey.
17 (O)For I will restore (P)health to you,
    and (Q)your wounds I will heal,
declares the Lord,
because (R)they have called you an outcast:
    (S)‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’

18 “Thus says the Lord:
Behold, (T)I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob
    and have compassion on his dwellings;
the city shall be rebuilt on (U)its mound,
    and the palace shall stand where it used to be.
19 (V)Out of them shall come songs of thanksgiving,
    and the voices of those who celebrate.
(W)I will multiply them, and they shall not be few;
    I will make them honored, and they shall not be small.
20 (X)Their children shall be as they were of old,
    and their congregation shall be established before me,
    and I will punish all who oppress them.
21 (Y)Their prince shall be one of themselves;
    (Z)their ruler shall come out from their midst;
(AA)I will make him draw near, and he shall approach me,
    (AB)for who would dare of himself to approach me?
declares the Lord.
22 (AC)And you shall be my people,
    and I will be your God.”

23 (AD)Behold (AE)the storm of the Lord!
    Wrath has gone forth,
a whirling tempest;
    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
24 (AF)The fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back
    until he has executed and accomplished
    the intentions of his mind.
(AG)In the latter days you will understand this.

The Lord Will Turn Mourning to Joy

31 (AH)“At that time, declares the Lord, (AI)I will be the God of all the clans of Israel, and they shall be my people.”

Thus says the Lord:
“The people who survived the sword
    found grace in the wilderness;
(AJ)when Israel sought for rest,
    the Lord appeared to him[a] from far away.
(AK)I have loved you with an everlasting love;
    therefore (AL)I have continued (AM)my faithfulness to you.
(AN)Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
    O virgin Israel!
(AO)Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines
    and shall go forth in (AP)the dance of the merrymakers.
(AQ)Again you shall plant vineyards
    on the mountains of Samaria;
the planters shall plant
    and shall enjoy the fruit.
For there shall be a day when watchmen will call
    in (AR)the hill country of Ephraim:
(AS)‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
    to the Lord our God.’”

For thus says the Lord:
(AT)“Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob,
    and raise shouts for (AU)the chief of the nations;
proclaim, give praise, and say,
    (AV)‘O Lord, save your people,
    the remnant of Israel.’
Behold, I will bring them (AW)from the north country
    and (AX)gather them from (AY)the farthest parts of the earth,
among them (AZ)the blind and the lame,
    the pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together;
    a great company, they shall return here.
(BA)With weeping they shall come,
    (BB)and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back,
I will make them (BC)walk by brooks of water,
    (BD)in a straight path in which they shall not stumble,
for (BE)I am a father to Israel,
    and Ephraim is (BF)my firstborn.

10 “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
    and declare it in the coastlands far away;
say, ‘He who scattered Israel will (BG)gather him,
    and will keep him (BH)as a shepherd keeps his flock.’
11 (BI)For the Lord has ransomed Jacob
    and has redeemed him from (BJ)hands too strong for him.
12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
    (BK)and they shall be radiant (BL)over the goodness of the Lord,
(BM)over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
    and over the young of the flock and the herd;
(BN)their life shall be like a watered garden,
    (BO)and they shall languish no more.
13 (BP)Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,
    and the young men and the old shall be merry.
(BQ)I will turn their mourning into joy;
    I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
14 (BR)I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance,
    and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness,
declares the Lord.”

15 Thus says the Lord:
(BS)“A voice is heard in (BT)Ramah,
    lamentation and bitter weeping.
(BU)Rachel is weeping for her children;
    she refuses to be comforted for her children,
    (BV)because they are no more.”

16 Thus says the Lord:
“Keep your voice from weeping,
    and your eyes from tears,
for there is a reward for your work,
declares the Lord,
    and (BW)they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 (BX)There is hope for your future,
declares the Lord,
    and your children shall come back to their own country.
18 I have heard (BY)Ephraim grieving,
‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined,
    like an untrained calf;
(BZ)bring me back that I may be restored,
    for you are the Lord my God.
19 For after (CA)I had turned away, I relented,
    and after I was instructed, (CB)I struck my thigh;
(CC)I was ashamed, and I was confounded,
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 (CD)Is Ephraim my dear son?
    (CE)Is he my darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
    I do remember him still.
(CF)Therefore my heart[b] yearns for him;
    I will surely have mercy on him,
declares the Lord.

12 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘Your wound(A) is incurable,
    your injury beyond healing.(B)
13 There is no one to plead your cause,(C)
    no remedy for your sore,
    no healing(D) for you.
14 All your allies(E) have forgotten you;
    they care nothing for you.
I have struck you as an enemy(F) would
    and punished you as would the cruel,(G)
because your guilt is so great
    and your sins(H) so many.
15 Why do you cry out over your wound,
    your pain that has no cure?(I)
Because of your great guilt and many sins
    I have done these things to you.(J)

16 “‘But all who devour(K) you will be devoured;
    all your enemies will go into exile.(L)
Those who plunder(M) you will be plundered;
    all who make spoil of you I will despoil.
17 But I will restore you to health
    and heal(N) your wounds,’
declares the Lord,
‘because you are called an outcast,(O)
    Zion for whom no one cares.’(P)

18 “This is what the Lord says:

“‘I will restore the fortunes(Q) of Jacob’s tents(R)
    and have compassion(S) on his dwellings;
the city will be rebuilt(T) on her ruins,
    and the palace will stand in its proper place.
19 From them will come songs(U) of thanksgiving(V)
    and the sound of rejoicing.(W)
I will add to their numbers,(X)
    and they will not be decreased;
I will bring them honor,(Y)
    and they will not be disdained.
20 Their children(Z) will be as in days of old,
    and their community will be established(AA) before me;
    I will punish(AB) all who oppress them.
21 Their leader(AC) will be one of their own;
    their ruler will arise from among them.(AD)
I will bring him near(AE) and he will come close to me—
    for who is he who will devote himself
    to be close to me?’
declares the Lord.
22 “‘So you will be my people,(AF)
    and I will be your God.(AG)’”

23 See, the storm(AH) of the Lord
    will burst out in wrath,
a driving wind swirling down
    on the heads of the wicked.
24 The fierce anger(AI) of the Lord will not turn back(AJ)
    until he fully accomplishes
    the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
    you will understand(AK) this.

31 “At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God(AL) of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.”

This is what the Lord says:

“The people who survive the sword
    will find favor(AM) in the wilderness;
    I will come to give rest(AN) to Israel.”

The Lord appeared to us in the past,[a] saying:

“I have loved(AO) you with an everlasting love;
    I have drawn(AP) you with unfailing kindness.
I will build you up again,
    and you, Virgin(AQ) Israel, will be rebuilt.(AR)
Again you will take up your timbrels(AS)
    and go out to dance(AT) with the joyful.(AU)
Again you will plant(AV) vineyards
    on the hills of Samaria;(AW)
the farmers will plant them
    and enjoy their fruit.(AX)
There will be a day when watchmen(AY) cry out
    on the hills of Ephraim,
‘Come, let us go up to Zion,
    to the Lord our God.’”(AZ)

This is what the Lord says:

“Sing(BA) with joy for Jacob;
    shout for the foremost(BB) of the nations.
Make your praises heard, and say,
    Lord, save(BC) your people,
    the remnant(BD) of Israel.’
See, I will bring them from the land of the north(BE)
    and gather(BF) them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind(BG) and the lame,(BH)
    expectant mothers and women in labor;
    a great throng will return.
They will come with weeping;(BI)
    they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead(BJ) them beside streams of water(BK)
    on a level(BL) path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,(BM)
    and Ephraim is my firstborn son.

10 “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
    proclaim it in distant coastlands:(BN)
‘He who scattered(BO) Israel will gather(BP) them
    and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’(BQ)
11 For the Lord will deliver Jacob
    and redeem(BR) them from the hand of those stronger(BS) than they.
12 They will come and shout for joy(BT) on the heights(BU) of Zion;
    they will rejoice in the bounty(BV) of the Lord
the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,(BW)
    the young of the flocks(BX) and herds.
They will be like a well-watered garden,(BY)
    and they will sorrow(BZ) no more.
13 Then young women will dance and be glad,
    young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning(CA) into gladness;
    I will give them comfort(CB) and joy(CC) instead of sorrow.
14 I will satisfy(CD) the priests(CE) with abundance,
    and my people will be filled with my bounty,(CF)
declares the Lord.

15 This is what the Lord says:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,(CG)
    mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,(CH)
    because they are no more.”(CI)

16 This is what the Lord says:

“Restrain your voice from weeping
    and your eyes from tears,(CJ)
for your work will be rewarded,(CK)
declares the Lord.
    “They will return(CL) from the land of the enemy.
17 So there is hope(CM) for your descendants,”
declares the Lord.
    “Your children(CN) will return to their own land.

18 “I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning:
    ‘You disciplined(CO) me like an unruly calf,(CP)
    and I have been disciplined.
Restore(CQ) me, and I will return,
    because you are the Lord my God.
19 After I strayed,(CR)
    I repented;
after I came to understand,
    I beat(CS) my breast.
I was ashamed(CT) and humiliated
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’(CU)
20 Is not Ephraim my dear son,
    the child(CV) in whom I delight?
Though I often speak against him,
    I still remember(CW) him.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
    I have great compassion(CX) for him,”
declares the Lord.

Godlessness in the Last Days

But understand this, that (A)in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be (B)lovers of self, (C)lovers of money, (D)proud, (E)arrogant, abusive, (F)disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, (G)heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, (H)not loving good, treacherous, reckless, (I)swollen with conceit, (J)lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but (K)denying its power. (L)Avoid such people. For among them are (M)those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to (N)arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as (O)Jannes and Jambres (P)opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, (Q)men corrupted in mind and (R)disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, (S)as was that of those two men.

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

10 (T)You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me (U)at Antioch, (V)at Iconium, and (W)at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet (X)from them all (Y)the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to (Z)live a godly life in Christ Jesus (AA)will be persecuted, 13 while (AB)evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and (AC)being deceived. 14 But as for you, (AD)continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom[a] you learned it 15 and how (AE)from childhood you have been acquainted with (AF)the sacred writings, (AG)which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 (AH)All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that (AI)the man of God[b] may be complete, (AJ)equipped (AK)for every good work.

  2. 2 Timothy 3:17 That is, a messenger of God (the phrase echoes a common Old Testament expression)

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.(A) People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,(B) boastful, proud,(C) abusive,(D) disobedient to their parents,(E) ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous,(F) rash, conceited,(G) lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness(H) but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.(I)

They are the kind who worm their way(J) into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.(K) Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses,(L) so also these teachers oppose(M) the truth. They are men of depraved minds,(N) who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men,(O) their folly will be clear to everyone.

A Final Charge to Timothy

10 You, however, know all about my teaching,(P) my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, 11 persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch,(Q) Iconium(R) and Lystra,(S) the persecutions I endured.(T) Yet the Lord rescued(U) me from all of them.(V) 12 In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,(W) 13 while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse,(X) deceiving and being deceived.(Y) 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,(Z) 15 and how from infancy(AA) you have known the Holy Scriptures,(AB) which are able to make you wise(AC) for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed(AD) and is useful for teaching,(AE) rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,(AF) 17 so that the servant of God[a](AG) may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.(AH)
