And he was given authority to rule over every tribe and people and language and nation. 8 And all the people who belong to this world worshiped the beast. They are the ones whose names were not written in the Book of Life that belongs to the Lamb who was slaughtered before the world was made.[b]
9 Anyone with ears to hear
should listen and understand.
10 Anyone who is destined for prison
will be taken to prison.
Anyone destined to die by the sword
will die by the sword.
This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently and remain faithful.

9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(J)
10 “If anyone is to go into captivity,
into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed[b] with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”[c](K)
This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness(L) on the part of God’s people.(M)

The kings of the world
have committed adultery with her.
Because of her desires for extravagant luxury,

“Come away from her, my people.
Do not take part in her sins,
or you will be punished with her.
5 For her sins are piled as high as heaven,
and God remembers her evil deeds.
6 Do to her as she has done to others.

She brewed a cup of terror for others,

7 She glorified herself and lived in luxury,
so match it now with torment and sorrow.
