⁹ Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation,

²³ Thus says the Lord: ^(A)“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, ²⁴ but ^(B)let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. ^(C)For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

⁵ Listen, my beloved brothers, ^(A)has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be ^(B)rich in faith and heirs of ^(C)the kingdom, ^(D)which he has promised to those who love him? ⁶ But you ^(E)have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who ^(F)drag you ^(G)into court?

^10 (A)as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; ^(B)as poor, yet making many rich; ^(C)as having nothing, ^(D)yet possessing everything.

⁹ “‘I know your tribulation and ^(A)your poverty (^(B)but you are rich) and the slander^[a] of ^(C)those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

3 See ^(A)what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called ^(B)children of God; and so we are. The reason why ^(C)the world does not know us is that ^(D)it did not know him. ² Beloved, we are ^(E)God's children ^(F)now, and what we will be ^(G)has not yet appeared; but we know that ^(H)when he appears^{[a] (I)}we shall be like him, because ^(J)we shall see him as he is. ³ And everyone who ^(K)thus hopes in him ^(L)purifies himself as he is pure.
