The Sin of Partiality

(A)My brothers and sisters, (B)do not hold your faith in our (C)glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of (D)personal favoritism. For if a man comes into your [a]assembly with a gold ring and is dressed in (E)bright clothes, and a poor man in (F)dirty clothes also comes in, and you [b]pay special attention to the one who is wearing the (G)bright clothes, and say, “You sit here in a good place,” and you say to the poor man, “You stand over there, or sit down by my footstool,” have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges (H)with evil [c]motives? Listen, (I)my beloved brothers and sisters: did (J)God not choose the poor [d]of this world to be (K)rich in faith and (L)heirs of the kingdom which He (M)promised to those who love Him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Is it not the rich who oppress you and [e]personally (N)drag you into [f]court? (O)Do they not blaspheme the good name [g]by which you have been called?

If, however, you (P)are fulfilling the [h]royal law according to the Scripture, “(Q)You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. But if you (R)show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the Law as violators. 10 For whoever keeps the whole Law, yet (S)stumbles in one point, has become (T)guilty of all. 11 For He who said, “(U)Do not commit adultery,” also said, “(V)Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do murder, you have become a violator of the Law. 12 So speak, and so act, as those who are to be judged by (W)the law of freedom. 13 For (X)judgment will be merciless to one who has shown no mercy; mercy [i]triumphs over judgment.

Faith and Works

14 (Y)What use is it, (Z)my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith, but he has no works? Can [j]that faith save him? 15 (AA)If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “(AB)Go in peace, [k]be warmed and be filled,” yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17 In the same way, (AC)faith also, if it has no works, is [l]dead, being by itself.

18 (AD)But someone [m]may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your (AE)faith without the works, and I will (AF)show you my faith (AG)by my works.” 19 You believe that [n](AH)God is one. (AI)You do well; (AJ)the demons also believe, and shudder. 20 But are you willing to acknowledge, (AK)you foolish person, that (AL)faith without works is useless? 21 (AM)Was our father Abraham not justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that (AN)faith was working with his works, and [o]as a result of the (AO)works, faith was [p]perfected; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “(AP)And Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called a (AQ)friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was (AR)Rahab the prostitute not justified by works also (AS)when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also (AT)faith without works is dead.

The Tongue Is a Fire

(AU)Do not become teachers in large numbers, (AV)my brothers, since you know that we who are teachers will incur a [q]stricter judgment. For we all (AW)stumble in many ways. (AX)If anyone does not stumble in [r]what he says, he is a (AY)perfect man, able to [s](AZ)rein in the whole body as well. Now (BA)if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their whole body as well. Look at the ships too: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are nevertheless directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot determines. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it (BB)boasts of great things.

(BC)See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And (BD)the tongue is a fire, the very world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set among [t]our body’s parts as that which (BE)defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our [u]life, and is set on fire by [v](BF)hell. For every [w]species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human [x]race. But no one among mankind can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil, full of (BG)deadly poison. With it we bless (BH)our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people, (BI)who have been made in the likeness of God; 10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, these things should not be this way. 11 Does a spring send out from the same opening both [y]fresh and bitter water? 12 (BJ)Can a fig tree, my brothers and sisters, bear olives, or a vine bear figs? Nor can salt water produce [z]fresh.

Wisdom from Above

13 Who among you is wise and understanding? (BK)Let him show by his (BL)good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter (BM)jealousy and [aa]selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against (BN)the truth. 15 This wisdom is not that which comes down (BO)from above, but is (BP)earthly, [ab](BQ)natural, (BR)demonic. 16 For where (BS)jealousy and [ac]selfish ambition exist, [ad]there is disorder and every evil thing. 17 But the wisdom (BT)from above is first (BU)pure, then (BV)peace-loving, (BW)gentle, [ae]reasonable, (BX)full of mercy and good fruits, [af](BY)impartial, free of (BZ)hypocrisy. 18 And the (CA)fruit of righteousness is sown in peace [ag]by those who make peace.

Favoritism Forbidden

My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious(A) Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.(B) Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges(C) with evil thoughts?

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:(D) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world(E) to be rich in faith(F) and to inherit the kingdom(G) he promised those who love him?(H) But you have dishonored the poor.(I) Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?(J) Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”[a](K) you are doing right. But if you show favoritism,(L) you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.(M) 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles(N) at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.(O) 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”[b](P) also said, “You shall not murder.”[c](Q) If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged(R) by the law that gives freedom,(S) 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.(T) Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Faith and Deeds

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?(U) Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.(V) 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?(W) 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.(X)

18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”

Show me your faith without deeds,(Y) and I will show you my faith(Z) by my deeds.(AA) 19 You believe that there is one God.(AB) Good! Even the demons believe that(AC)—and shudder.

20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[d]?(AD) 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?(AE) 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together,(AF) and his faith was made complete by what he did.(AG) 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”[e](AH) and he was called God’s friend.(AI) 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?(AJ) 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.(AK)

Taming the Tongue

Not many of you should become teachers,(AL) my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged(AM) more strictly.(AN) We all stumble(AO) in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say(AP) is perfect,(AQ) able to keep their whole body in check.(AR)

When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.(AS) Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.(AT) Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire,(AU) a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body,(AV) sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.(AW)

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.(AX)

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.(AY) 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?(AZ) Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Two Kinds of Wisdom

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it(BA) by their good life, by deeds(BB) done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition(BC) in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.(BD) 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven(BE) but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.(BF) 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition,(BG) there you find disorder and every evil practice.

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven(BH) is first of all pure; then peace-loving,(BI) considerate, submissive, full of mercy(BJ) and good fruit, impartial and sincere.(BK) 18 Peacemakers(BL) who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.(BM)
