Our Will and God’s Will

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.”(A) 14 Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes.(B)

15 Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.(C) 17 So it is sin to know the good and yet not do it.(D)

Warning to the Rich

Come now, you rich(E) people, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you. Your wealth has rotted and your clothes are moth-eaten.(F) Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure in the last days.(G) Look! The pay that you withheld from the workers(H) who mowed your fields cries out, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Armies.(I) You have lived luxuriously on the earth and have indulged yourselves. You have fattened your hearts(J) in a day of slaughter.(K) You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous, who does not resist you.(L)

Waiting for the Lord

Therefore, brothers and sisters, be patient until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and is patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.(M) You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.(N)

Brothers and sisters, do not complain about one another, so that you will not be judged. Look, the judge stands at the door!(O)

10 Brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord’s name as an example of suffering and patience. 11 See, we count as blessed those who have endured.[a] You have heard of Job’s endurance(P) and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about—the Lord is compassionate and merciful.(Q)

Warning about Self-Confidence

13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.

17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

Warning to the Rich

Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you. Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth-eaten rags. Your gold and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment. For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter. You have condemned and killed innocent people,[a] who do not resist you.[b]

Patience and Endurance

Dear brothers and sisters,[c] be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.

Don’t grumble about each other, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. For look—the Judge is standing at the door!

10 For examples of patience in suffering, dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.

Boasting About Tomorrow

13 Come now, you who say, (A)“Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For (B)you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, (C)“If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. (D)All such boasting is evil. 17 (E)So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Warning to the Rich

Come now, (F)you rich, weep and howl for the (G)miseries that are coming upon you. (H)Your riches have rotted and (I)your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. (J)You have laid up treasure (K)in the last days. Behold, (L)the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and (M)the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of (N)the Lord of hosts. (O)You have lived on the earth in luxury and (P)in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in (Q)a day of slaughter. You have condemned and (R)murdered (S)the righteous person. He does not resist you.

Patience in Suffering

Be patient, therefore, brothers,[a] until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives (T)the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. (U)Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord (V)is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, (W)so that you may not be judged; behold, (X)the Judge is standing (Y)at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take (Z)the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of (AA)the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen (AB)the purpose of the Lord, how (AC)the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

The Judge(Y) is standing at the door!(Z)
