He forbids them to have any respect of persons, but to regard the poor as well as the rich, to be loving and merciful, and not to boast of faith where no deeds are. For it is but a dead faith where good works do not follow.
2 Brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, in respect of persons. 2 If there comes into your company a man with a golden ring and in goodly apparel, and there comes in also a poor man in wretched clothing, 3 and you have a respect to him who wears the fine clothing, and say to him, Sit here in a good place, but say to the poor, Stand there, or, Sit here by my footstool, 4 are you not partial among yourselves, and have judged after evil thoughts?
5 Hearken, my dear beloved brethren. Has not God chosen the poor of this world, who are rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonoured the poor. Are not the rich those who oppress you, and who draw you before judges? 7 Do they not speak evil of that good name after which you are named?
8 If you fulfil the royal law according to the scripture that says, You shall love your neighbour as yourself – you do well. 9 But if you regard one person more than another, you commit sin, and are rebuked by the law as transgressors. 10 Whoever keeps the whole law, and yet fails in one point, is guilty in all. 11 For he who said: You shall not commit adultery, said also: You shall not kill. Though you commit no adultery, yet if you kill, you are a transgressor of the law.
12 So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For there will be judgment merciless to him who shows no mercy. But mercy triumphs over judgment.
14 What avails it, my brethren, though a person say he has faith, when he has no deeds? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or a sister is without proper clothing, or destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, Depart in peace; may God send you warmth and food – and notwithstanding, you do not give them those things that are needful to the body, what help is it? 17 Even so faith, if it has no deeds, is dead in itself.
18 Yea, and someone might say, You have faith, and I have deeds; show me your faith by your deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 Do you believe that there is one God? You do well. The devils also believe, and tremble.
20 Will you understand, O vain man, that faith without deeds is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified through works when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 You see that faith operated with his deeds, and through the deeds, the faith was made perfect. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says: Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him for righteousness. And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then how by deeds a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also, was not Rahab the harlot justified through works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without deeds is dead.

2 (A)Fratelli miei, la vostra fede nel nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, il Signore della gloria, sia immune da favoritismi.
2 Infatti, se nella vostra adunanza entra un uomo con un anello d’oro, vestito splendidamente, e vi entra pure un povero vestito malamente, 3 e voi avete riguardo a quello che veste elegantemente e [gli] dite: «Tu, siedi qui al posto d’onore»; e al povero dite: «Tu, stattene là in piedi», o «siedi [qui] in terra accanto al mio sgabello», 4 non state forse usando un trattamento diverso e giudicando in base a ragionamenti malvagi?
5 Ascoltate, fratelli miei carissimi: Dio non ha forse scelto quelli che sono poveri secondo il mondo[a] perché siano ricchi in fede ed eredi del regno che ha promesso a quelli che lo amano? 6 Voi invece avete disprezzato il povero! Non sono forse i ricchi quelli che vi opprimono e vi trascinano davanti ai tribunali? 7 Non sono essi quelli che bestemmiano il buon nome che è stato invocato su di voi?
8 Certo, se adempite la legge regale, come dice la Scrittura: «Ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso»[b], fate bene; 9 ma se avete riguardi personali, voi commettete un peccato e siete condannati dalla legge quali trasgressori. 10 Chiunque infatti osserva tutta la legge, ma la trasgredisce in un punto solo, si rende colpevole su tutti i punti. 11 Poiché colui che ha detto: «Non commettere adulterio», ha detto anche: «Non uccidere»[c]. Quindi, se tu non commetti adulterio ma uccidi, sei trasgressore della legge.
12 Parlate e agite come persone che devono essere giudicate secondo la legge di libertà. 13 Perché il giudizio è senza misericordia contro chi non ha usato misericordia. La misericordia invece trionfa sul giudizio.
La fede e le opere
14 (B)A che serve, fratelli miei, se uno dice di avere fede ma non ha opere? Può la fede salvarlo? 15 Se un fratello o una sorella non hanno vestiti e mancano del cibo quotidiano, 16 e uno di voi dice loro: «Andate in pace, scaldatevi e saziatevi», ma non date loro le cose necessarie al corpo, a che cosa serve? 17 Così è della fede; se non ha opere, è per se stessa morta. 18 Anzi, uno piuttosto dirà: «Tu hai la fede, e io ho le opere; mostrami la tua fede senza le [tue] opere, e io con le mie opere ti mostrerò la [mia] fede». 19 Tu credi che c’è un solo Dio, e fai bene; anche i demòni lo credono e tremano.
20 Insensato! Vuoi renderti conto che la fede senza le opere non ha valore[d]? 21 Abraamo, nostro padre, non fu forse giustificato per le opere quando offrì suo figlio Isacco sull’altare? 22 Tu vedi che la fede agiva insieme alle sue opere e che per le opere la fede fu resa completa; 23 così fu adempiuta la Scrittura che dice:
«Abraamo credette a Dio, e ciò gli fu messo in conto come giustizia»[e];
e fu chiamato amico di Dio. 24 Voi vedete [dunque] che l’uomo è giustificato per opere, e non per fede soltanto. 25 E così Raab, la prostituta, non fu anche lei giustificata per le opere quando accolse gli inviati e li fece ripartire per un’altra strada? 26 Infatti, come il corpo senza lo spirito è morto, così anche la fede senza le opere è morta.

2 我的弟兄們，你們既然對我們榮耀的主耶穌基督有信心，就不應該憑外貌待人。 2 如果有一個手戴金戒指、身穿華麗衣服的人，進入你們的會堂；又有一個衣衫襤褸的窮人，也進去了。 3 你們就看重那穿華麗衣服的人，說：“請坐在這好位上。”又對那個窮人說：“你站在那裡。”或說：“坐在我的腳凳下邊。” 4 這不是你們對人有歧視，成了心懷惡意的審判官嗎？ 5 我親愛的弟兄們，請聽： 神不是揀選了在世上被認為貧窮的人嗎？這些人卻在信心上富足，而且是承受 神的國的人。這國是 神應許賜給愛他的人的。 6 然而你們卻侮辱窮人。其實，那些欺壓你們，拉你們上法庭的，不就是富足的人嗎？ 7 難道不是他們褻瀆那召你們的尊名嗎？（或譯：“難道不是他們毀謗你們蒙召的美名嗎？”） 8 你們若照著聖經所說“要愛人如己”這話，去完成這至尊的律法，你們就作對了。 9 如果你們憑外貌待人，就是犯罪，律法就要裁定你們是犯法的。 10 因為凡是遵守全部律法的，只要在一條上失足，就違犯所有的了。 11 就像那說“不可姦淫”的，也說“不可殺人”；你縱然不姦淫，卻殺人，還是犯法的。 12 你們既然按著使人自由的律法受審判，就應照著這律法說話行事。 13 因為對不行憐憫的人，審判他們的時候就沒有憐憫；憐憫勝過審判。
信心沒有行為是死的
14 我的弟兄們，人若說他有信心，卻沒有行為，有甚麼益處呢？這信心能救他嗎？ 15 如果有弟兄或姊妹缺衣少食， 16 而你們中間有人對他們說：“平平安安地去吧！願你們穿得暖，吃得飽。”卻不給他們身體所需用的，那有甚麼用處呢？ 17 照樣，如果只有信心，沒有行為，這信心就是死的。
18 也許有人要說，你有信心，我有行為；請把你沒有行為的信心指給我看，我就藉著我的行為，把我的信心指給你看。 19 你信 神只有一位，你信的不錯；就連鬼魔也信，卻是戰兢。 20 愚昧的人哪，你願意知道沒有行為的信心是沒有用的嗎？ 21 我們的祖先亞伯拉罕，把他的兒子以撒獻在祭壇上，不是因行為稱義嗎？ 22 你看，他的信心與行為是一致的，信心就因著行為得到完全了； 23 這正應驗了經上所說的：“亞伯拉罕信 神，這就算為他的義。”他也被稱為 神的朋友。 24 可見人稱義是因著行為，不僅是因著信心。 25 照樣，妓女喇合接待了探子，又從另一條路把他們送走，不也是因行為稱義嗎？ 26 身體沒有靈魂是死的，照樣，信心沒有行為也是死的。

Favoritism Forbidden
2 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious(A) Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.(B) 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges(C) with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:(D) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world(E) to be rich in faith(F) and to inherit the kingdom(G) he promised those who love him?(H) 6 But you have dishonored the poor.(I) Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?(J) 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?
8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”[a](K) you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism,(L) you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.(M) 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles(N) at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.(O) 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”[b](P) also said, “You shall not murder.”[c](Q) If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged(R) by the law that gives freedom,(S) 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful.(T) Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Faith and Deeds
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds?(U) Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.(V) 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?(W) 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.(X)
18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.”
Show me your faith without deeds,(Y) and I will show you my faith(Z) by my deeds.(AA) 19 You believe that there is one God.(AB) Good! Even the demons believe that(AC)—and shudder.
20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[d]?(AD) 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar?(AE) 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together,(AF) and his faith was made complete by what he did.(AG) 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”[e](AH) and he was called God’s friend.(AI) 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction?(AJ) 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.(AK)
