Varning till rika människor

5 Ni som är rika, gråt och jämra er över den olycka som ska drabba er. 2 Er rikedom ska ruttna bort och era kläder ätas av mal. 3 Ert guld och silver ska förstöras av rost. Rosten ska vittna mot er och er kropp brännas upp som av eld. Ni har samlat på er rikedomar för den sista tiden. 4 Ni har undanhållit lönen för skördearbetarna på era åkrar. Nu ropar de, och skördearbetarnas rop har nått härskarornas[a] Herres öron.[b] 5 Ni har levt i lyx och överflöd här på jorden. Ni har ätit era hjärtan feta inför slakten.[c] 6 Ni har dömt och dödat den rättfärdige, han gjorde inte motstånd mot er.

Herren Jesus kommer snart tillbaka

7 Syskon, vänta tåligt på att Herren ska komma tillbaka. Se hur jordbrukaren tåligt väntar på skörden och ser fram emot höstregn och vårregn. 8 Visa tålamod och styrk era hjärtan, ni också, för Herren kommer snart.

9 Klaga inte på varandra, syskon, så att ni inte blir dömda. Domaren står redan utanför dörren.

10 Syskon, ta profeterna som talat i Herrens namn till ert föredöme när det gäller att lida och visa tålamod. 11 Vi prisar ju dem lyckliga som har hållit ut. Ni har hört om Jobs uthållighet och sett hur Herren lät hans liv sluta. Herren är full av medlidande och barmhärtighet.[d]

12 Framför allt, mina syskon, svär inga eder, vare sig vid himlen eller vid jorden eller vid något annat. Säg bara ett enkelt ja eller nej, så att ni inte drabbas av domen.[e]

Bönens kraft

13 Om någon av er får lida, ska han be. Och om någon är glad, ska han sjunga glädjesånger. 14 Om någon är sjuk, ska han kalla på församlingens ledare, och de ska be för honom och smörja honom med olja i Herrens namn.[f] 15 Deras bön, som bes i tro, ska göra den sjuke frisk, och Herren ska resa upp honom. Och om den sjuke har syndat ska han bli förlåten. 16 Bekänn därför era synder för varandra och be för varandra, så att ni kan bli botade.[g] Den rättfärdiges bön har stor verkan.

17 Elia var en människa precis som vi. Men när han ivrigt bad att det inte skulle regna, då regnade det inte i landet på tre och ett halvt år. 18 När han sedan bad igen, då kom regnet från himlen, och jorden gav sin skörd.[h]

Rädda den som har kommit bort från Jesus

19 Mina syskon, om någon av er har kommit bort från sanningen och någon för honom tillbaka, 20 så ska ni veta att den som lyckas föra en syndare tillbaka från hans villoväg, han räddar den personen från döden och gör så att många synder blir förlåtna.

5 ¶ Ea, ya ahora, oh ricos, llorad aullando por vuestras miserias que os vendrán.

2 Vuestras riquezas están podridas; vuestras ropas están comidas de polilla.

3 Vuestro oro, y plata están corrompidos de orín, y su orín os será testimonio en contra, y comerá del todo vuestras carnes, como fuego. Habéis allegado tesoro para los postreros días.

4 He aquí, el jornal de los obreros que han segado vuestras tierras (el cual por engaño no les ha sido pagado de vosotros) clama, y los clamores de los que han segado, han entrado en los oídos del Señor de los ejércitos.

5 Habéis vivido en deleites sobre la tierra, y habéis sido disolutos, y habéis recreado vuestros corazones como en el día de matar sacrificios.

6 Habéis condenado y muerto al justo, y él no os resiste.

7 Pues, hermanos, sed pacientes hasta la venida del Señor. Mirad que el labrador espera el precioso fruto de la tierra, esperando pacientemente, hasta que reciba la lluvia temprana y tardía.

8 Sed también vosotros pacientes, y confirmad vuestros corazones, porque la venida del Señor se acerca.

9 Hermanos, no os quejéis unos contra otros, para que no seáis condenados. He aquí, el juez está delante de la puerta.

10 Hermanos míos, tomad por ejemplo de aflicción, y de paciencia, a los profetas que hablaron en nombre del Señor.

11 He aquí, tenemos por bienaventurados a los que sufren. Habéis oído la paciencia de Job, y habéis visto el fin del Señor, que el Señor es muy misericordioso y piadoso.

12 ¶ También hermanos míos, ante todas las cosas no juréis, ni por el cielo, ni por la tierra, ni por otro cualquier juramento; mas vuestro sí sea sí; y vuestro no, no; para que no caigáis en condenación.

13 ¿Está alguno entre vosotros afligido? Haga oración. ¿Está alguno alegre? Cante.

14 ¿Está alguno enfermo entre vosotros? Llame a los ancianos de la Iglesia, y oren por él, ungiéndole con aceite en el Nombre del Señor;

15 y la oración de fe hará salvo al enfermo, y el Señor lo aliviará; y si estuviere en pecados, le serán perdonados.

16 Confesaos vuestras faltas unos a otros, y rogad los unos por los otros, para que seáis sanos. Porque la oración eficaz del justo, es muy poderosa.

17 Elías era hombre sujeto a pasiones semejantes a las nuestras, y rogó en oración que no lloviera, y no llovió sobre la tierra tres años y seis meses.

18 Y otra vez oró, y el cielo dio lluvia, y la tierra produjo su fruto.

19 Hermanos, si alguien de entre vosotros ha errado de la verdad, y alguno le convirtiere,

20 sepa este tal que el que hubiere hecho convertir al pecador del error de su camino, salvará un alma de muerte, y cubrirá multitud de pecados.

Warning to Rich Oppressors

5 Now listen,(A) you rich people,(B) weep and wail(C) because of the misery that is coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes.(D) 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.(E) 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers(F) who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries(G) of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.(H) 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves(I) in the day of slaughter.[a](J) 6 You have condemned and murdered(K) the innocent one,(L) who was not opposing you.

Patience in Suffering

7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming.(M) See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting(N) for the autumn and spring rains.(O) 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming(P) is near.(Q) 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters,(R) or you will be judged. The Judge(S) is standing at the door!(T)

10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets(U) who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed(V) those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance(W) and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.(X) The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.(Y)

12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.(Z)

The Prayer of Faith

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray.(AA) Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.(AB) 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders(AC) of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil(AD) in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith(AE) will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins(AF) to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.(AG) The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.(AH)

17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are.(AI) He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.(AJ) 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.(AK)

19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth(AL) and someone should bring that person back,(AM) 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save(AN) them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.(AO)

Rich Oppressors Will Be Judged

5 Come now, you (A)rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your (B)riches [a]are corrupted, and (C)your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. (D)You have heaped up treasure in the last days. 4 Indeed (E)the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and (F)the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of [b]Sabaoth. 5 You have lived on the earth in pleasure and [c]luxury; you have [d]fattened your hearts [e]as in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.

Be Patient and Persevering

7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. 8 You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord [f]is at hand.

9 Do not [g]grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be [h]condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! 10 (G)My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and (H)patience. 11 Indeed (I)we count them blessed who (J)endure. You have heard of (K)the perseverance of Job and seen (L)the end intended by the Lord—that (M)the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.

12 But above all, my brethren, (N)do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into [i]judgment.

Meeting Specific Needs(O)

13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him (P)pray. Is anyone cheerful? (Q)Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, (R)anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. (S)And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 [j]Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. (T)The effective, [k]fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man (U)with a nature like ours, and (V)he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed (W)again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

Bring Back the Erring One

19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone (X)turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way (Y)will save [l]a soul from death and (Z)cover a multitude of sins.
