Címzés, üdvözlés
1 Jakab, Istennek és az Úr Jézus Krisztusnak szolgája, üdvözletét küldi a szórványban élő tizenkét törzsnek.
A kísértés célja és eredete
2 Teljes örömnek tartsátok, testvéreim, amikor különféle kísértésekbe estek,
3 tudván hogy hitetek próbája állhatatosságot eredményez.
4 Az állhatatosság pedig tegye tökéletessé a cselekedetet, hogy tökéletesek és hibátlanok legyetek, minden fogyatkozás nélkül.
5 Ha pedig valakinek nincsen bölcsessége, kérjen bölcsességet Istentől, aki készségesen és szemrehányás nélkül ad mindenkinek, és meg is kapja.
6 De hittel kérje, semmit sem kételkedve, mert aki kételkedik, az olyan, mint a tenger hulláma, amelyet a szél sodor és ide-oda hajt.
7 Ne gondolja tehát az ilyen, hogy bármit is kaphat az Úrtól,
8 a kétlelkű és minden útján állhatatlan ember.
9 A szegény sorsú testvér dicsekedjék a méltóságával,
10 a gazdag pedig megalázott voltával, mert elmúlik mindez, mint a mező virága.
11 Mert felkel a nap nagy hőséggel, és elszárítja a füvet; a virága lehullik, és szépsége elvész. Így sorvad el vállalkozásaiban a gazdag is.
12 Boldog ember az, aki a kísértés idején kitart, mert miután kiállta a próbát, elnyeri az élet koronáját, amelyet az Úr megígért az őt szeretőknek.
13 Senki se mondja, amikor kísértésbe jut: az Isten kísért engem, mert az Isten a gonosztól nem kísérthető, és ő maga sem kísért senkit a gonosszal.
14 Mert mindenki saját kívánságától vonzva és csalogatva esik kísértésbe.
15 Azután a kívánság megfoganva bűnt szül, a bűn pedig kiteljesedve halált nemz.
16 Ne tévelyegjetek, szeretett testvéreim:
17 minden jó adomány és minden tökéletes ajándék onnan felülről, a világosság Atyjától száll alá, akiben nincs változás, sem fénynek és árnyéknak váltakozása.
18 Az ő akarata szült minket az igazság igéje által, hogy mintegy első zsengéje legyünk teremtményeinek.
Isten igéjének hallgatása és megtartása
19 Tanuljátok meg tehát, szeretett testvéreim: legyen minden ember gyors a hallásra, késedelmes a szólásra, késedelmes a haragra,
20 mert az ember haragja nem szolgálja az Isten igazságát.
21 Ezért tehát vessetek el magatoktól minden tisztátalanságot és a gonoszság utolsó maradványát is, és szelíden fogadjátok a belétek oltott igét, amely meg tudja tartani lelketeket.
22 Legyetek az igének cselekvői, ne csupán hallgatói, hogy be ne csapjátok magatokat.
23 Mert ha valaki csak hallgatója az igének, de nem cselekszi, olyan, mint az az ember, aki a tükörben nézi meg az arcát.
24 Megnézi ugyan magát, de elmegy, és nyomban el is felejti, hogy milyen volt.
25 De aki a szabadság tökéletes törvényébe tekint bele, és megmarad mellette, úgyhogy nem feledékeny hallgatója, hanem tevékeny megvalósítója: azt boldoggá teszi cselekedete.
26 Ha valaki azt hiszi, hogy kegyes, de nem fékezi meg a nyelvét, hanem még önmagát is becsapja, annak a kegyessége hiábavaló.
27 Tiszta és szeplőtlen kegyesség az Isten és Atya előtt ez: meglátogatni az árvákat és az özvegyeket nyomorúságukban, és tisztán megőrizni az embernek önmagát a világtól.

1 James,(A) a servant of God(B) and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
To the twelve tribes(C) scattered(D) among the nations:
Greetings.(E)
Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds,(F) 3 because you know that the testing of your faith(G) produces perseverance.(H) 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature(I) and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,(J) who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.(K) 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,(L) because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded(M) and unstable(N) in all they do.
9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.(O) 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.(P) 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat(Q) and withers(R) the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed.(S) In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(T) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(U) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(V)
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(W) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(X) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(Y)
16 Don’t be deceived,(Z) my dear brothers and sisters.(AA) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(AB) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(AC) who does not change(AD) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(AE) through the word of truth,(AF) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(AG) of all he created.
Listening and Doing
19 My dear brothers and sisters,(AH) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(AI) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(AJ) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of(AK) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,(AL) which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(AM) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,(AN) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.(AO)
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues(AP) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after(AQ) orphans and widows(AR) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(AS)

Les épreuves et les tentations
2 Mes frères, regardez comme un sujet de joie complète les diverses épreuves auxquelles vous pouvez être exposés, 3 sachant que l’épreuve de votre foi produit la patience. 4 Mais il faut que la patience accomplisse parfaitement son œuvre, afin que vous soyez parfaits et accomplis, sans faillir en rien.
5 Si quelqu’un d’entre vous manque de sagesse, qu’il la demande à Dieu, qui donne à tous simplement et sans reproche, et elle lui sera donnée. 6 Mais qu’il la demande avec foi, sans douter; car celui qui doute est semblable au flot de la mer, agité par le vent et poussé de côté et d’autre. 7 Qu’un tel homme ne s’imagine pas qu’il recevra quelque chose du Seigneur: 8 c’est un homme irrésolu, inconstant dans toutes ses voies.
9 Que le frère de condition humble se glorifie de son élévation. 10 Que le riche, au contraire, se glorifie de son humiliation; car il passera comme la fleur de l’herbe. 11 Le soleil s’est levé avec sa chaleur ardente, il a desséché l’herbe, sa fleur est tombée, et la beauté de son aspect a disparu: ainsi le riche se flétrira dans ses entreprises.
12 Heureux l’homme qui supporte patiemment la tentation; car, après avoir été éprouvé, il recevra la couronne de vie, que le Seigneur a promise à ceux qui l’aiment.
13 Que personne, lorsqu’il est tenté, ne dise: C’est Dieu qui me tente. Car Dieu ne peut être tenté par le mal, et il ne tente lui-même personne. 14 Mais chacun est tenté quand il est attiré et amorcé par sa propre convoitise. 15 Puis la convoitise, lorsqu’elle a conçu, enfante le péché; et le péché, étant consommé, produit la mort.
Mettre en pratique la Parole de Dieu
16 Ne vous y trompez pas, mes frères bien-aimés: 17 toute grâce excellente et tout don parfait descendent d’en haut, du Père des lumières, chez lequel il n’y a ni changement ni ombre de variation. 18 Il nous a engendrés selon sa volonté, par la parole de vérité, afin que nous soyons en quelque sorte les prémices de ses créatures. 19 Sachez-le, mes frères bien-aimés. Ainsi, que tout homme soit prompt à écouter, lent à parler, lent à se mettre en colère; 20 car la colère de l’homme n’accomplit pas la justice de Dieu. 21 C’est pourquoi, rejetant toute souillure et tout débordement de méchanceté[a], recevez avec douceur la parole qui a été plantée en vous, et qui peut sauver vos âmes.
22 Mettez en pratique la parole, et ne vous bornez pas à l’écouter en vous trompant vous-mêmes par de faux raisonnements. 23 Car, si quelqu’un écoute la parole et ne la met pas en pratique, il est semblable à un homme qui regarde dans un miroir son visage naturel, 24 et qui, après s’être regardé, s’en va, et oublie aussitôt comment il était. 25 Mais celui qui aura plongé les regards dans la loi parfaite, la loi de la liberté, et qui aura persévéré, n’étant pas un auditeur oublieux, mais se mettant à l’œuvre, celui-là sera heureux dans son activité.
26 Si quelqu’un croit être religieux, sans tenir sa langue en bride, mais en trompant son cœur, la religion de cet homme est vaine. 27 La religion pure et sans tache, devant Dieu notre Père, consiste à visiter les orphelins et les veuves dans leurs afflictions, et à se préserver des souillures du monde.

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
