Salutation
1 Jacques, serviteur de Dieu et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ, salue les douze tribus dispersées du peuple de Dieu[a].
L’épreuve et la persévérance
2 Mes frères et sœurs, quand vous passez par toutes sortes d’épreuves[b], considérez-vous comme heureux. 3 Car vous le savez : la mise à l’épreuve de votre foi produit l’endurance. 4 Mais il faut que votre endurance aille jusqu’au bout de ce qu’elle peut faire pour que vous parveniez à l’état d’adultes et soyez pleins de force, des hommes auxquels il ne manque rien.
La sagesse et la prière
5 Si l’un de vous manque de sagesse[c], qu’il la demande à Dieu qui la lui donnera, car il donne à tous généreusement et sans faire de reproche. 6 Il faut cependant qu’il la demande avec foi, sans douter, car celui qui doute ressemble aux vagues de la mer agitées et soulevées par le vent. 7 Qu’un tel homme ne s’imagine pas obtenir quoi que ce soit du Seigneur : 8 son cœur est partagé, il est inconstant dans toutes ses entreprises.
Le pauvre et le riche
9 Que le frère ou la sœur pauvre soit fier de ce que Dieu l’élève, 10 et le riche de ce que Dieu l’abaisse. En effet, il passera comme la fleur des champs. 11 Le soleil se lève, sa chaleur devient brûlante[d], et la plante se dessèche, sa fleur tombe, et toute sa beauté[e] s’évanouit. Ainsi en est-il du riche : il disparaîtra au milieu de ses activités.
La tentation et les mauvais désirs
12 Heureux l’homme qui tient ferme face à la tentation[f], car après avoir fait ses preuves, il recevra la couronne du vainqueur : la vie que Dieu a promise à ceux qui l’aiment. 13 Que personne, devant la tentation, ne dise : « C’est Dieu qui me tente. » Car Dieu ne peut pas être tenté par le mal et il ne tente lui-même personne. 14 Lorsque nous sommes tentés, ce sont les mauvais désirs que nous portons en nous qui nous attirent et nous séduisent, 15 puis le mauvais désir conçoit et donne naissance au péché. Or le péché, une fois parvenu à son plein développement, engendre la mort. 16 Ne vous laissez donc pas égarer sur ce point, mes chers frères et sœurs : 17 tout cadeau de valeur, tout don parfait, nous vient d’en haut, du Père des lumières[g] et en qui il n’y a ni changement, ni ombre due à des variations[h]. 18 Par un acte de sa libre volonté, il nous a engendrés[i] par la parole de vérité pour que nous soyons comme les premiers fruits de sa nouvelle création. 19 Vous savez tout cela, mes chers frères et sœurs[j].
La Parole et l’obéissance
Mais que chacun de vous soit toujours prêt à écouter, qu’il ne se hâte pas de parler, ni de se mettre en colère. 20 Car ce n’est pas par la colère qu’un homme accomplit ce qui est juste aux yeux de Dieu. 21 Débarrassez-vous donc de tout ce qui souille et de tout ce qui reste en vous de méchanceté, pour recevoir, avec humilité, la Parole qui a été plantée dans votre cœur, car elle a le pouvoir de vous sauver.
22 Seulement, ne vous contentez pas de l’écouter, traduisez-la en actes, sans quoi vous vous tromperiez vous-mêmes.
23 En effet, si quelqu’un se contente d’écouter la Parole sans y conformer ses actes, il ressemble à un homme qui, en s’observant dans un miroir, découvre son vrai visage : 24 après s’être ainsi observé, il s’en va et oublie ce qu’il est.
25 Voici, au contraire, un homme qui scrute la loi parfaite qui donne la liberté : il lui demeure fidèlement attaché et, au lieu de l’oublier après l’avoir entendue, il y conforme ses actes ; cet homme sera heureux dans tout ce qu’il fait. 26 Mais si quelqu’un croit être religieux, alors qu’il ne sait pas tenir sa langue en bride, il s’illusionne lui-même : sa religion ne vaut rien.
27 La religion authentique et pure aux yeux de Dieu, le Père, consiste à aider les orphelins et les veuves dans leurs détresses et à ne pas se laisser corrompre par ce monde.

1 Mula (A) kay Santiago, lingkod[a] ng Diyos at ng Panginoong Jesu-Cristo: Binabati ko ang labindalawang liping nagsikalat sa iba't ibang bansa.
Pananampalataya at Karunungan
2 Ituring ninyong tunay na kagalakan, mga kapatid, kapag kayo'y dumaranas ng iba't ibang pagsubok, 3 sapagkat alam ninyo na ang pagsubok sa inyong pananampalataya ay nagbubunga ng katatagan. 4 At dapat kayong magpakatatag hanggang wakas upang kayo'y dumating sa hustong gulang, ganap at walang kakulangan. 5 At kung ang sinuman sa inyo ay nagkukulang ng karunungan, humingi siya sa Diyos at siya'y bibigyan, sapagkat ang Diyos ay nagbibigay nang sagana sa lahat at hindi nanunumbat. 6 Ngunit ang humihingi ay dapat magtiwala at huwag mag-alinlangan, sapagkat ang nag-aalinlangan ay parang alon sa dagat na hinihipan ng hangin at itinataboy kahit saan. 7 Huwag isipin ng taong iyon na tatanggap siya ng anuman galing sa Panginoon. 8 Ang taong iyon ay nagdadalawang-isip, di-tiyak sa lahat ng kanyang dinaraanan.
Kahirapan at Kayamanan
9 Dapat magalak ang dukhang kapatid na siya'y itinataas ng Diyos, 10 gayundin (B) ang mayamang kapatid na ibinababa, sapagkat ang mayaman ay lilipas na gaya ng bulaklak sa parang. 11 Sumisikat ang araw na may matinding init at tinutuyo ang damo; nalalagas ang bulaklak nito at ang ganda nito'y kumukupas. Gayundin naman, ang mayaman ay lilipas sa gitna ng kanyang pagpapayaman.
Tukso at Pagsubok
12 Pinagpala ang taong nananatiling matatag sa gitna ng pagsubok; sapagkat kung siya'y magtagumpay, tatanggapin niya ang korona ng buhay na ipinangako ng Panginoon sa mga umiibig sa kanya. 13 Huwag sabihin ninuman na tinutukso siya ng Diyos kapag dumaranas siya ng pagsubok. Hindi maaaring matukso ng masama ang Diyos, at hindi rin naman siya nanunukso ninuman. 14 Natutukso ang tao kapag siya'y naaakit at nagpapatangay sa sarili niyang pagnanasa. 15 Kapag ang pagnanasang iyon ay naipaglihi, nanganganak ito ng kasalanan, at ang kasalanan naman kapag malaki na ay nagbubunga ng kamatayan. 16 Huwag kayong padaya, mga minamahal kong kapatid. 17 Ang bawat mabuti at ganap na kaloob ay nagmumula sa itaas, mula sa Ama na lumikha ng mga tanglaw sa kalangitan. Hindi siya nag-iiba o nagdudulot man ng anino dahil sa pagbabago. 18 Ipinanganak niya tayo ayon sa kanyang kalooban sa pamamagitan ng salita ng katotohanan, upang tayo'y maging mga unang bunga sa kanyang mga nilalang.
Pakikinig at Pagtupad
19 Unawain ninyo ito, mga kapatid kong minamahal: bawat isa'y maging laging handang makinig, maingat sa pananalita, at hindi madaling magalit. 20 Sapagkat ang galit ng tao ay hindi nagbubunga ng katuwiran ng Diyos. 21 Kaya't talikuran na ninyo ang lahat ng karumihan at laganap na kasamaan, at tanggaping may pagpapakumbaba ang salitang itinanim sa inyong puso. Ang salitang ito ang may kapangyarihang magligtas sa inyo. 22 Maging tagatupad kayo ng salita ng Diyos, at hindi tagapakinig lamang. Kung hindi, dinadaya ninyo ang inyong sarili. 23 Sinumang nakikinig ng salita at hindi tumutupad nito ay katulad ng taong tumitingin sa kanyang mukha sa salamin 24 at pagkatapos makita ang kanyang sarili ay umaalis at kaagad nalilimutan ang kanyang anyo. 25 Subalit ang taong masusing tumitingin at nagpapatuloy sa sakdal na kautusang nagpapalaya sa tao, siya ang pagpapalain ng Diyos sa kanyang mga gawain, kung siya'y tagatupad at hindi lamang tagapakinig na lumilimot ng kanyang narinig. 26 Kung iniisip ninuman na siya'y relihiyoso ngunit hindi marunong magpigil ng kanyang dila, dinadaya lamang niya ang kanyang sarili at ang kanyang relihiyon ay walang kabuluhan. 27 Ang dalisay at walang kapintasang relihiyon sa harap ng ating Diyos at Ama ay ito: ang dalawin ang mga ulila at ang mga balo sa kanilang kahirapan, at panatilihing malinis ang sarili mula sa karumihan ng sanlibutan.

2 Mga kapatid ko, ariin ninyong buong kagalakan, kung kayo'y mangahulog sa sarisaring tukso;

7 Sapagka't huwag isipin ng taong yaon na siya'y tatanggap ng anoman bagay sa Panginoon;
8 Ang taong (K)may dalawang akala, ay walang tiyaga sa lahat ng kaniyang mga paglakad.
9 Datapuwa't ang kapatid na mababang kapalaran ay magmapuri (L)sa kaniyang mataas na kalagayan:
10 At ang mayaman, (M)dahil sa siya'y pinababa: sapagka't (N)siya'y lilipas na gaya ng bulaklak ng damo.
11 Sapagka't sumisikat ang araw na may hanging nakakasunog, at naluluoy (O)ang damo; at nangalalagas ang bulaklak nito, at nawawala ang karikitan ng kaniyang anyo: gayon din naman ang taong mayaman na malalanta sa lahat ng kaniyang mga paglakad.
12 (P)Mapalad ang taong nagtitiis ng tukso; sapagka't pagkasubok sa kaniya, siya'y tatanggap (Q)ng putong ng buhay, (R)na ipinangako ng Panginoon sa mga nagsisiibig sa kaniya.
13 Huwag sabihin ng sinoman pagka siya'y tinutukso, Ako'y tinutukso ng Dios; sapagka't ang Dios ay hindi matutukso sa masamang bagay, at hindi rin naman siya nanunukso sa kanino man:
14 Kundi ang bawa't tao ay natutukso, pagka nahihila (S)ng sariling masamang pita at nahihikayat.
15 Kung magkagayo'y ang kahalayan, (T)kung maipaglihi ay nanganganak ng kasalanan: at ang kasalanan, pagka malaki na ay (U)namumunga ng kamatayan.
16 Huwag kayong padaya, mga minamahal kong kapatid.
17 Ang bawa't mabuting kaloob (V)at ang bawa't sakdal na kaloob ay pawang buhat sa itaas, na bumababa mula sa (W)Ama ng mga ilaw, (X)na walang pagbabago, ni kahit anino man ng pagiiba.

20 Sapagka't ang galit ng tao ay hindi gumagawa ng katuwiran ng Dios.
21 Kaya't (AE)ihiwalay ninyo ang lahat na karumihan at ang pagapaw ng kasamaan, at tanggapin ninyo na may kaamuan ang salitang itinanim, (AF)na makapagliligtas ng inyong mga kaluluwa.
22 Datapuwa't maging (AG)tagatupad kayo ng salita, at huwag tagapakinig lamang, na inyong dinadaya ang inyong sarili.
23 Sapagka't (AH)kung ang sinoman ay tagapakinig ng salita at hindi tagatupad, ay katulad siya ng isang tao na tinitingnan ang kaniyang talagang mukha sa (AI)salamin:
24 Sapagka't minamasdan niya ang kaniyang sarili, at siya'y umaalis at pagdaka'y kaniyang nalilimutan kung ano siya.
25 Nguni't ang nagsisiyasat ng sakdal na (AJ)kautusan, ang kautusan ng kalayaan, at nananatiling gayon, na hindi tagapakinig na lumilimot, kundi tagatupad na gumagawa, ay pagpapalain ang taong ito sa kaniyang ginagawa.

To the twelve tribes(C) scattered(D) among the nations:
Greetings.(E)
Trials and Temptations
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds,(F) 3 because you know that the testing of your faith(G) produces perseverance.(H) 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature(I) and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,(J) who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.(K) 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt,(L) because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded(M) and unstable(N) in all they do.
9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.(O) 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower.(P) 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat(Q) and withers(R) the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed.(S) In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial(T) because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life(U) that the Lord has promised to those who love him.(V)
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own(W) evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;(X) and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.(Y)
16 Don’t be deceived,(Z) my dear brothers and sisters.(AA) 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above,(AB) coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights,(AC) who does not change(AD) like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth(AE) through the word of truth,(AF) that we might be a kind of firstfruits(AG) of all he created.
Listening and Doing
19 My dear brothers and sisters,(AH) take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak(AI) and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger(AJ) does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of(AK) all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you,(AL) which can save you.
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.(AM) 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom,(AN) and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.(AO)
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues(AP) deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after(AQ) orphans and widows(AR) in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.(AS)

2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
