The Kings Conquered by Joshua

And these are the kings of the country (A)which Joshua and the children of Israel conquered on this side of the Jordan, on the west, from Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon as far as [a]Mount Halak and the ascent to (B)Seir, which Joshua (C)gave to the tribes of Israel as a possession according to their divisions, (D)in the mountain country, in the lowlands, in the Jordan plain, in the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the South—(E)the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: (F)the king of Jericho, one; (G)the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; 10 (H)the king of Jerusalem, one; the king of Hebron, one; 11 the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one; 12 the king of Eglon, one; (I)the king of Gezer, one; 13 (J)the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; 14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one; 15 (K)the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; 16 (L)the king of Makkedah, one; (M)the king of Bethel, one; 17 the king of Tappuah, one; (N)the king of Hepher, one; 18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of [b]Lasharon, one; 19 the king of Madon, one; (O)the king of Hazor, one; 20 the king of (P)Shimron Meron, one; the king of Achshaph, one; 21 the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one; 22 (Q)the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one; 23 the king of Dor in the (R)heights of Dor, one; the king of (S)the people of Gilgal, one; 24 the king of Tirzah, one—(T)all the kings, thirty-one.

Remaining Land to Be Conquered

13 Now Joshua (U)was old, advanced in years. And the Lord said to him: “You are old, advanced in years, and there remains very much land yet to be possessed. (V)This is the land that yet remains: (W)all the territory of the Philistines and all (X)that of the Geshurites, (Y)from Sihor, which is east of Egypt, as far as the border of Ekron northward (which is counted as Canaanite); the (Z)five lords of the Philistines—the Gazites, the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also (AA)the Avites; from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians (AB)as far as Aphek, to the border of (AC)the Amorites; the land of (AD)the [c]Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, (AE)from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath; all the inhabitants of the mountains from Lebanon as far as (AF)the [d]Brook Misrephoth, and all the Sidonians—them (AG)I will drive out from before the children of Israel; only (AH)divide[e] it by lot to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Land Divided East of the Jordan

With the other half-tribe the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, (AI)which Moses had given them, (AJ)beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord had given them: from Aroer which is on the bank of the River Arnon, and the town that is in the midst of the ravine, (AK)and all the plain of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 (AL)all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border of the children of Ammon; 11 (AM)Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salcah; 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei, who remained of (AN)the remnant of the giants; (AO)for Moses had [f]defeated and [g]cast out these.

13 Nevertheless the children of Israel (AP)did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites, but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

14 (AQ)Only to the tribe of Levi he had given [h]no inheritance; the sacrifices of the Lord God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, (AR)as He said to them.

The Land of Reuben

15 (AS)And Moses had given to the tribe of the children of Reuben an inheritance according to their families. 16 Their territory was (AT)from Aroer, which is on the bank of the River Arnon, (AU)and the city that is in the midst of the ravine, (AV)and all the plain by Medeba; 17 (AW)Heshbon and all its cities that are in the plain: Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 (AX)Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 (AY)Kirjathaim, (AZ)Sibmah, Zereth Shahar on the mountain of the valley, 20 Beth Peor, (BA)the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 (BB)all the cities of the plain and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (BC)whom Moses had struck (BD)with the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were princes of Sihon dwelling in the country. 22 The children of Israel also killed with the sword (BE)Balaam the son of Beor, the [i]soothsayer, among those who were killed by them. 23 And the border of the children of Reuben was the bank of the Jordan. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and their villages.

The Land of Gad

24 (BF)Moses also had given an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad according to their families. 25 (BG)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, (BH)and half the land of the Ammonites as far as Aroer, which is before (BI)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir, 27 and in the valley (BJ)Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, (BK)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as its border, as far as the edge (BL)of the [j]Sea of Chinnereth, on the other side of the Jordan eastward. 28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and their villages.

Half the Tribe of Manasseh (East)

29 (BM)Moses also had given an inheritance to half the tribe of Manasseh; it was for half the tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families: 30 Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and (BN)all the towns of Jair which are in Bashan, sixty cities; 31 half of Gilead, and (BO)Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the (BP)children of Machir the son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Machir according to their families.

32 These are the areas which Moses had [k]distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward. 33 (BQ)But to the tribe of Levi Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel was their inheritance, (BR)as He had said to them.

The Land Divided West of the Jordan

14 These are the areas which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, (BS)which Eleazar the priest, Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel distributed as an inheritance to them. Their inheritance was (BT)by lot, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe. (BU)For Moses had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe on the other side of the Jordan; but to the Levites he had given no inheritance among them. For (BV)the children of Joseph were two tribes: Manasseh and Ephraim. And they gave no part to the Levites in the land, except (BW)cities to dwell in, with their common-lands for their livestock and their property. (BX)As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.

Caleb Inherits Hebron

Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the (BY)Kenizzite said to him: “You know (BZ)the word which the Lord said to Moses the man of God concerning (CA)you and me in Kadesh Barnea. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord (CB)sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart. Nevertheless (CC)my brethren who went up with me made the [l]heart of the people melt, but I wholly (CD)followed the Lord my God. So Moses swore on that day, saying, (CE)‘Surely the land (CF)where your foot has trodden shall be your inheritance and your children’s forever, because you have wholly followed the Lord my God.’ 10 And now, behold, the Lord has kept me (CG)alive, (CH)as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel [m]wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old. 11 (CI)As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both (CJ)for going out and for coming in. 12 Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how (CK)the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. (CL)It may be that the Lord will be with me, and (CM)I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

13 And Joshua (CN)blessed him, (CO)and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. 14 (CP)Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he (CQ)wholly followed the Lord God of Israel. 15 And (CR)the name of Hebron formerly was Kirjath Arba (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim).

(CS)Then the land had rest from war.

The Land of Judah

15 So this was the [n]lot of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families:

(CT)The border of Edom at the (CU)Wilderness of Zin southward was the extreme southern boundary. And their (CV)southern border began at the shore of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. Then it went out to the southern side of (CW)the Ascent of Akrabbim, passed along to Zin, ascended on the south side of Kadesh Barnea, passed along to Hezron, went up to Adar, and went around to Karkaa. From there it passed (CX)toward Azmon and went out to the Brook of Egypt; and the border ended at the sea. This shall be your southern border.

The east border was the Salt Sea as far as the mouth of the Jordan.

And the (CY)border on the northern quarter began at the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. The border went up to (CZ)Beth Hoglah and passed north of Beth Arabah; and the border went up (DA)to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben. Then the border went up toward (DB)Debir from (DC)the Valley of Achor, and it turned northward toward Gilgal, which is before the Ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the valley. The border continued toward the waters of En Shemesh and ended at (DD)En Rogel. And the border went up (DE)by the Valley of the Son of Hinnom to the southern slope of the (DF)Jebusite city (which is Jerusalem). The border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the Valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the Valley (DG)of [o]Rephaim northward. Then the border went around from the top of the hill to (DH)the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and extended to the cities of Mount Ephron. And the border went around (DI)to Baalah (which is (DJ)Kirjath Jearim). 10 Then the border [p]turned westward from Baalah to Mount Seir, passed along to the side of Mount Jearim on the north (which is Chesalon), went down to Beth Shemesh, and passed on to (DK)Timnah. 11 And the border went out to the side of (DL)Ekron northward. Then the border went around to Shicron, passed along to Mount Baalah, and extended to Jabneel; and the border ended at the sea.

12 The west border was (DM)the coastline of the Great Sea. This is the boundary of the children of Judah all around according to their families.

Caleb Occupies Hebron and Debir(DN)

13 (DO)Now to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a share among the children of (DP)Judah, according to the commandment of the Lord to Joshua, namely, (DQ)Kirjath Arba, which is Hebron (Arba was the father of Anak). 14 Caleb drove out (DR)the three sons of Anak from there: (DS)Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak. 15 Then (DT)he went up from there to the inhabitants of Debir (formerly the name of Debir was Kirjath Sepher).

16 (DU)And Caleb said, “He who [q]attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as wife.” 17 So (DV)Othniel the (DW)son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and he gave him (DX)Achsah his daughter as wife. 18 (DY)Now it was so, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So (DZ)she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you wish?” 19 She answered, “Give me a (EA)blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

Land Still to Be Taken

13 When Joshua had grown old,(AE) the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.

“This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines(AF) and Geshurites,(AG) from the Shihor River(AH) on the east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron(AI) on the north, all of it counted as Canaanite though held by the five Philistine rulers(AJ) in Gaza, Ashdod,(AK) Ashkelon,(AL) Gath and Ekron; the territory of the Avvites(AM) on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek(AN) and the border of the Amorites;(AO) the area of Byblos;(AP) and all Lebanon(AQ) to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon(AR) to Lebo Hamath.(AS)

“As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim,(AT) that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out(AU) before the Israelites. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you,(AV) and divide it as an inheritance(AW) among the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.”

Division of the Land East of the Jordan

The other half of Manasseh,[a] the Reubenites and the Gadites had received the inheritance that Moses had given them east of the Jordan, as he, the servant of the Lord, had assigned(AX) it to them.(AY)

It extended from Aroer(AZ) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and included the whole plateau(BA) of Medeba as far as Dibon,(BB) 10 and all the towns of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon,(BC) out to the border of the Ammonites.(BD) 11 It also included Gilead,(BE) the territory of the people of Geshur and Maakah, all of Mount Hermon and all Bashan as far as Salekah(BF) 12 that is, the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan,(BG) who had reigned in Ashtaroth(BH) and Edrei.(BI) (He was the last of the Rephaites.(BJ)) Moses had defeated them and taken over their land.(BK) 13 But the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur(BL) and Maakah,(BM) so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day.(BN)

14 But to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance, since the food offerings presented to the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he promised them.(BO)

15 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Reuben, according to its clans:

16 The territory from Aroer(BP) on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau past Medeba(BQ) 17 to Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau,(BR) including Dibon,(BS) Bamoth Baal,(BT) Beth Baal Meon,(BU) 18 Jahaz,(BV) Kedemoth,(BW) Mephaath,(BX) 19 Kiriathaim,(BY) Sibmah,(BZ) Zereth Shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor,(CA) the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth— 21 all the towns on the plateau(CB) and the entire realm of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled at Heshbon. Moses had defeated him and the Midianite chiefs,(CC) Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba(CD)—princes allied with Sihon—who lived in that country. 22 In addition to those slain in battle, the Israelites had put to the sword Balaam son of Beor,(CE) who practiced divination.(CF) 23 The boundary of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan. These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans.(CG)

24 This is what Moses had given to the tribe of Gad, according to its clans:

25 The territory of Jazer,(CH) all the towns of Gilead(CI) and half the Ammonite country as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;(CJ) 26 and from Heshbon(CK) to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim(CL) to the territory of Debir;(CM) 27 and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah,(CN) Sukkoth(CO) and Zaphon(CP) with the rest of the realm of Sihon king of Heshbon (the east side of the Jordan, the territory up to the end of the Sea of Galilee[b](CQ)). 28 These towns and their villages were the inheritance of the Gadites,(CR) according to their clans.

29 This is what Moses had given to the half-tribe of Manasseh, that is, to half the family of the descendants of Manasseh, according to its clans:

30 The territory extending from Mahanaim(CS) and including all of Bashan,(CT) the entire realm of Og king of Bashan(CU)—all the settlements of Jair(CV) in Bashan, sixty towns, 31 half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei (the royal cities of Og in Bashan).(CW) This was for the descendants of Makir(CX) son of Manasseh—for half of the sons of Makir, according to their clans.(CY)

32 This is the inheritance Moses had given when he was in the plains of Moab(CZ) across the Jordan east of Jericho.(DA) 33 But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance;(DB) the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance,(DC) as he promised them.(DD)

Division of the Land West of the Jordan

14 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance(DE) in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar(DF) the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel(DG) allotted(DH) to them.(DI) Their inheritances were assigned by lot(DJ) to the nine and a half tribes,(DK) as the Lord had commanded through Moses. Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan(DL) but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,(DM) for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim.(DN) The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.(DO) So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.(DP)

Allotment for Caleb

Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal,(DQ) and Caleb son of Jephunneh(DR) the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God(DS) at Kadesh Barnea(DT) about you and me.(DU) I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea(DV) to explore the land.(DW) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,(DX) but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.(DY) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.(DZ) So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance(EA) and that of your children(EB) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[c]

10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised,(EC) he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved(ED) about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!(EE) 11 I am still as strong(EF) today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous(EG) to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day.(EH) You yourself heard then that the Anakites(EI) were there and their cities were large and fortified,(EJ) but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

13 Then Joshua blessed(EK) Caleb son of Jephunneh(EL) and gave him Hebron(EM) as his inheritance.(EN) 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.(EO) 15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba(EP) after Arba,(EQ) who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)

Then the land had rest(ER) from war.

Allotment for Judah(ES)

15 The allotment for the tribe of Judah, according to its clans, extended down to the territory of Edom,(ET) to the Desert of Zin(EU) in the extreme south.(EV)

Their southern boundary started from the bay at the southern end of the Dead Sea,(EW) crossed south of Scorpion Pass,(EX) continued on to Zin and went over to the south of Kadesh Barnea.(EY) Then it ran past Hezron up to Addar and curved around to Karka. It then passed along to Azmon(EZ) and joined the Wadi of Egypt,(FA) ending at the Mediterranean Sea. This is their[d] southern boundary.

The eastern boundary(FB) is the Dead Sea(FC) as far as the mouth of the Jordan.

The northern boundary(FD) started from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan, went up to Beth Hoglah(FE) and continued north of Beth Arabah(FF) to the Stone of Bohan(FG) son of Reuben. The boundary then went up to Debir(FH) from the Valley of Achor(FI) and turned north to Gilgal,(FJ) which faces the Pass of Adummim south of the gorge. It continued along to the waters of En Shemesh(FK) and came out at En Rogel.(FL) Then it ran up the Valley of Ben Hinnom(FM) along the southern slope of the Jebusite(FN) city (that is, Jerusalem(FO)). From there it climbed to the top of the hill west of the Hinnom Valley(FP) at the northern end of the Valley of Rephaim.(FQ) From the hilltop the boundary headed toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah,(FR) came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down toward Baalah(FS) (that is, Kiriath Jearim).(FT) 10 Then it curved westward from Baalah(FU) to Mount Seir,(FV) ran along the northern slope of Mount Jearim (that is, Kesalon), continued down to Beth Shemesh(FW) and crossed to Timnah.(FX) 11 It went to the northern slope of Ekron,(FY) turned toward Shikkeron, passed along to Mount Baalah(FZ) and reached Jabneel.(GA) The boundary ended at the sea.

12 The western boundary is the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.(GB)

These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

13 In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb(GC) son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah—Kiriath Arba(GD), that is, Hebron.(GE) (Arba was the forefather of Anak.)(GF) 14 From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites(GG)—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai,(GH) the sons of Anak.(GI) 15 From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). 16 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah(GJ) in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 17 Othniel(GK) son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.

18 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him[e] to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”

19 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev,(GL) give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.(GM)
