Isaiah’s Commission
6 In the year that King Uzziah(A) died,(B) I saw the Lord,(C) high and exalted,(D) seated on a throne;(E) and the train of his robe(F) filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim,(G) each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet,(H) and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:
4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.(M)
5 “Woe(N) to me!” I cried. “I am ruined!(O) For I am a man of unclean lips,(P) and I live among a people of unclean lips,(Q) and my eyes have seen(R) the King,(S) the Lord Almighty.”(T)
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal(U) in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips;(V) your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.(W)”
8 Then I heard the voice(X) of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send?(Y) And who will go for us?(Z)”
And I said, “Here am I.(AA) Send me!”
9 He said, “Go(AB) and tell this people:
“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’(AC)
10 Make the heart of this people calloused;(AD)
make their ears dull
and close their eyes.[a](AE)
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,(AF)
understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”(AG)
11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”(AH)
And he answered:
“Until the cities lie ruined(AI)
and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted(AJ)
and the fields ruined and ravaged,(AK)
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away(AL)
and the land is utterly forsaken.(AM)
13 And though a tenth remains(AN) in the land,
it will again be laid waste.(AO)
But as the terebinth and oak
leave stumps(AP) when they are cut down,
so the holy(AQ) seed will be the stump in the land.”(AR)

6 (A)Nell’anno della morte del re Uzzia vidi il Signore seduto sopra un trono alto, molto elevato, e i lembi del suo mantello riempivano il tempio. 2 Sopra di lui stavano dei serafini, ognuno dei quali aveva sei ali; con due si copriva la faccia, con due si copriva i piedi e con due volava. 3 L’uno gridava all’altro e diceva: «Santo, santo, santo è il Signore degli eserciti! Tutta la terra è piena della sua gloria!» 4 Le porte furono scosse fin dalle loro fondamenta dalla voce di loro che gridavano, e la casa fu piena di fumo.
5 Allora io dissi: «Guai a me, sono perduto! Perché io sono un uomo dalle labbra impure e abito in mezzo a un popolo dalle labbra impure; e i miei occhi hanno visto il Re, il Signore degli eserciti!» 6 Ma uno dei serafini volò verso di me, tenendo in mano un carbone ardente, tolto con le molle dall’altare. 7 Mi toccò con esso la bocca e disse: «Ecco, questo ti ha toccato le labbra, la tua iniquità è tolta e il tuo peccato è espiato».
8 (B)Poi udii la voce del Signore che diceva: «Chi manderò? E chi andrà per noi?» Allora io risposi: «Eccomi, manda me!»
9 Ed egli disse: «Va’, e di’ a questo popolo: “Ascoltate, sì, ma senza capire; guardate, sì, ma senza discernere[a]!”
10 Rendi insensibile[b] il cuore di questo popolo, rendigli duri gli orecchi e chiudigli gli occhi, in modo che non veda con i suoi occhi, non oda con i suoi orecchi, non intenda con il cuore, non si converta e non sia guarito!»
11 E io dissi: «Fino a quando, Signore?» Egli rispose: «Finché le città siano devastate, senza abitanti, non vi sia più nessuno nelle case, e il paese sia ridotto in desolazione;
12 finché il Signore abbia allontanato gli uomini, e la solitudine sia grande in mezzo al paese.
13 Se vi rimane ancora un decimo della popolazione, esso a sua volta sarà distrutto; ma, come al terebinto e alla quercia, quando sono abbattuti, rimane il ceppo, così rimarrà al popolo, come ceppo, una discendenza santa».

Jesaja schaut den Herrn und wird von ihm berufen
6 Im Todesjahr des Königs Ussija sah ich den Herrn sitzen auf einem hohen und erhabenen Thron, und seine Säume[a] erfüllten den Tempel.
2 Seraphim standen über ihm; jeder von ihnen hatte sechs Flügel: mit zweien bedeckten sie ihr Angesicht, mit zweien bedeckten sie ihre Füße, und mit zweien flogen sie.
3 Und einer rief dem anderen zu und sprach: Heilig, heilig, heilig ist der Herr der Heerscharen[b]; die ganze Erde ist erfüllt von seiner Herrlichkeit!
4 Da erbebten die Pfosten der Schwellen von der Stimme des Rufenden, und das Haus wurde mit Rauch erfüllt.
5 Da sprach ich: Wehe mir, ich vergehe[c]! Denn ich bin ein Mann mit unreinen Lippen und wohne unter einem Volk, das unreine Lippen hat; denn meine Augen haben den König, den Herrn der Heerscharen, gesehen!
6 Da flog einer der Seraphim zu mir, und er hielt eine glühende Kohle in seiner Hand, die er mit der Zange vom Altar genommen hatte;
7 und er berührte meinen Mund [damit] und sprach: Siehe, dies hat deine Lippen berührt; deine Schuld ist von dir genommen und deine Sünde gesühnt!
8 Und ich hörte die Stimme des Herrn fragen: Wen soll ich senden, und wer wird für uns gehen? Da sprach ich: Hier bin ich, sende mich!
9 Und er sprach: Geh und sprich zu diesem Volk: Hört immerfort und versteht nicht, seht immerzu und erkennt nicht![d]
10 Mache das Herz dieses Volkes unempfänglich, und mache seine Ohren schwer[e] und verklebe seine Augen, damit es mit seinen Augen nicht sieht und mit seinen Ohren nicht hört, und damit sein Herz nicht zur Einsicht kommt und es sich nicht bekehrt und für sich Heilung findet!
11 Und ich fragte: Wie lange, Herr? Er antwortete: Bis die Städte verwüstet liegen, sodass niemand mehr darin wohnt, und die Häuser menschenleer sein werden und das Land in eine Einöde verwandelt ist.
12 Denn der Herr wird die Menschen weit wegführen, und die Verödung inmitten des Landes wird groß sein.
13 Und bleibt noch ein Zehntel darin, so fällt auch dieses wiederum der Vertilgung anheim. Aber wie die Terebinthe und die Eiche beim Fällen doch noch ihren Wurzelstock behalten, so bleibt ein heiliger Same als Wurzelstock!

6 Uzzijjá király halála évében láttam az Urat, magasra emelt trónon ülve. Palástja betöltötte a templomot.
2 Szeráfok álltak mellette, hat-hat szárnya volt mindegyiknek: kettővel arcát takarta el, kettővel lábát fedte be, kettővel pedig repült.
3 Így kiáltott egyik a másiknak: Szent, szent, szent a Seregek Ura, dicsősége betölti az egész földet!
4 A hangos kiáltástól megremegtek a küszöbök eresztékei, és a templom megtelt füsttel.
5 Ekkor megszólaltam: Jaj nekem! Elvesztem, mert tisztátalan ajkú vagyok, és tisztátalan ajkú nép között lakom. Hiszen a Királyt, a Seregek Urát látták szemeim!
6 És hozzám repült az egyik szeráf, kezében parázs volt, amelyet fogóval vett le az oltárról.
7 Számhoz érintette, és ezt mondta: Íme, ez megérintette ajkadat, bűnöd el van véve, vétked meg van bocsátva.
8 Majd az Úr szavát hallottam, aki ezt mondta: Kit küldjek el, ki megy el követségünkben? Én ezt mondtam: Itt vagyok, engem küldj!
9 Ő válaszolt: Menj, és mondd meg e népnek: Hallván halljatok, de ne értsetek, látván lássatok, de ne ismerjetek!
10 Tedd kövérré e nép szívét, tedd süketté a fülét, és kösd be a szemét, hogy szemével ne lásson, fülével ne halljon, szívével ne értsen, és megtérve meg ne gyógyuljon.
11 Megkérdeztem: Meddig tart ez, Uram? Ő így felelt: Míg el nem pusztulnak, és lakatlanok nem lesznek a városok, a házakban nem lesz ember, a föld pedig pusztává nem válik.
12 Eltávolítja az Úr az embert, és nagyon elhagyott lesz az ország.
13 Ha megmarad belőle egy tized, azt is újból pusztulás éri. De úgy, ahogyan a csernek vagy a tölgynek kivágás után is megmarad a gyökere. Ez a gyökér lesz a szent mag!

6 L’année de la mort du roi Ozias[a], je vis le Seigneur siégeant sur un trône très élevé. Les pans de son vêtement remplissaient le Temple.
2 Des êtres à forme de serpent[b] se tenaient debout ; chacun d’eux avait six ailes : deux ailes pour se couvrir le visage, deux autres pour se voiler le corps, et les deux dernières pour voler[c]. 3 S’adressant l’un à l’autre, ils proclamaient :
Saint, saint, saint est le Seigneur des armées célestes.
Toute la terre est pleine de sa gloire.
4 Les montants des portes du Temple se mirent à trembler au son de ces voix, tandis que le sanctuaire se remplit de fumée[d].
5 Je m’écriai :
Malheur à moi ! Je suis perdu, car j’ai les lèvres impures et j’habite au milieu d’un peuple aux lèvres impures. Et voici que, de mes yeux, j’ai vu le Roi, le Seigneur des armées célestes.
6 Alors l’un des êtres à forme de serpent vola vers moi, il tenait à la main une braise qu’il avait prise sur l’autel[e] avec des pincettes. 7 Il m’en toucha la bouche, et me dit :
Maintenant que ceci vient d’être appliqué sur tes lèvres, ta faute est enlevée et ton péché est expié.
8 Et j’entendis alors le Seigneur qui disait : Qui enverrai-je ? Qui marchera pour nous ?
Alors je répondis : Je suis prêt, envoie-moi.
9 Et le Seigneur me dit :
Va, et dis à ce peuple :
Vous aurez beau entendre,
vous ne comprendrez pas ;
oui, vous aurez beau voir,
mais vous n’appréhenderez rien[f].
10 Rends ce peuple insensible,
ferme-lui les oreilles
et bouche-lui les yeux
pour qu’il ne voie pas de ses yeux,
pour qu’il n’entende pas de ses oreilles
et pour qu’il ne comprenne pas,
qu’il ne revienne pas à moi
afin d’être guéri.
11 Je demandai alors : |Jusques à quand, Seigneur ?
Et il me répondit :
Jusqu’à ce que les villes |soient dévastées
et privées d’habitants,
qu’il n’y ait plus personne |dans les maisons,
et que ce territoire |soit réduit en désert |et dévasté.
12 L’Eternel enverra |ses habitants au loin,
et le pays sera |à l’état d’abandon.
13 S’il y subsiste encore |un dixième du peuple,
à son tour, il sera |embrasé par le feu.
Mais, comme un térébinthe |ou comme un chêne
qui conserve sa souche, |quand il est abattu,
la souche de ce peuple |sera une semence sainte.

- 6.2 Le terme hébreu saraph, traditionnellement rendu par séraphin, désignait en Nb 21.6, 8 et Dt 8.15, un serpent à la morsure redoutable. Dans Es 14.29 et 30.6, ce même terme sert à désigner un serpent volant. Ici, la figure des serpents ailés au visage et aux mains d’homme, pourrait, en renvoyant à l’épisode de Nb 21, symboliser le jugement divin (v. 9-12).
