Isaiah 53

New International Version

53 Who has believed our message^(A)
    and to whom has the arm^(B) of the Lord been revealed?^(C)
²He grew up before him like a tender shoot,^(D)
    and like a root^(E) out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
    nothing in his appearance^(F) that we should desire him.
³He was despised and rejected by mankind,
    a man of suffering,^(G) and familiar with pain.^(H)
Like one from whom people hide^(I) their faces
    he was despised,^(J) and we held him in low esteem.

⁴Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,^(K)
yet we considered him punished by God,^(L)
    stricken by him, and afflicted.^(M)
⁵But he was pierced^(N) for our transgressions,^(O)
    he was crushed^(P) for our iniquities;
the punishment^(Q) that brought us peace^(R) was on him,
    and by his wounds^(S) we are healed.^(T)
⁶We all, like sheep, have gone astray,^(U)
    each of us has turned to our own way;^(V)
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity^(W) of us all.

⁷He was oppressed^(X) and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;^(Y)
he was led like a lamb^(Z) to the slaughter,^(AA)
    and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
    so he did not open his mouth.
⁸By oppression^[a] and judgment^(AB) he was taken away.
    Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;^(AC)
    for the transgression^(AD) of my people he was punished.^[b]
⁹He was assigned a grave with the wicked,^(AE)
    and with the rich^(AF) in his death,
though he had done no violence,^(AG)
    nor was any deceit in his mouth.^(AH)

¹⁰Yet it was the Lord’s will^(AI) to crush^(AJ) him and cause him to suffer,^(AK)
    and though the Lord makes^[c] his life an offering for sin,^(AL)
he will see his offspring^(AM) and prolong his days,
    and the will of the Lord will prosper^(AN) in his hand.
¹¹After he has suffered,^(AO)
    he will see the light^(AP) of life^[d] and be satisfied^[e];
by his knowledge^[f] my righteous servant^(AQ) will justify^(AR) many,
    and he will bear their iniquities.^(AS)
¹²Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,^[g]^(AT)
    and he will divide the spoils^(AU) with the strong,^[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,^(AV)
    and was numbered with the transgressors.^(AW)
For he bore^(AX) the sin of many,^(AY)
    and made intercession^(AZ) for the transgressors.

Romans 8:16-39

New International Version

¹⁶The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit^(A) that we are God’s children.^(B) ¹⁷Now if we are children, then we are heirs^(C)—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings^(D) in order that we may also share in his glory.^(E)

Present Suffering and Future Glory

¹⁸I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.^(F) ¹⁹For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God^(G) to be revealed. ²⁰For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,^(H) in hope ²¹that^[a] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay^(I) and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.^(J)

²²We know that the whole creation has been groaning^(K) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. ²³Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit,^(L) groan^(M) inwardly as we wait eagerly^(N) for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.^(O) ²⁴For in this hope we were saved.^(P) But hope that is seen is no hope at all.^(Q) Who hopes for what they already have? ²⁵But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.^(R)

²⁶In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit^(S) himself intercedes for us^(T) through wordless groans. ²⁷And he who searches our hearts^(U) knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes^(V) for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

²⁸And we know that in all things God works for the good^(W) of those who love him, who^[b] have been called^(X) according to his purpose.^(Y) ²⁹For those God foreknew^(Z) he also predestined^(AA) to be conformed to the image of his Son,^(AB) that he might be the firstborn^(AC) among many brothers and sisters. ³⁰And those he predestined,^(AD) he also called;^(AE) those he called, he also justified;^(AF) those he justified, he also glorified.^(AG)

More Than Conquerors

³¹What, then, shall we say in response to these things?^(AH) If God is for us,^(AI) who can be against us?^(AJ) ³²He who did not spare his own Son,^(AK) but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? ³³Who will bring any charge^(AL) against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. ³⁴Who then is the one who condemns?^(AM) No one. Christ Jesus who died^(AN)—more than that, who was raised to life^(AO)—is at the right hand of God^(AP) and is also interceding for us.^(AQ) ³⁵Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?^(AR) Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?^(AS) ³⁶As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”^[c]^(AT)

³⁷No, in all these things we are more than conquerors^(AU) through him who loved us.^(AV) ³⁸For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,^[d] neither the present nor the future,^(AW) nor any powers,^(AX) ³⁹neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God^(AY) that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.^(AZ)
