23 (A)Sing, O heavens, for the Lord has done it!
Shout, you lower parts of the earth;
Break forth into singing, you mountains,
O forest, and every tree in it!
For the Lord has redeemed Jacob,
And (B)glorified Himself in Israel.

Judah Will Be Restored

24 Thus says the Lord, (C)your Redeemer,
And (D)He who formed you from the womb:
“I am the Lord, who makes all things,
(E)Who stretches out the heavens [a]all alone,
Who spreads abroad the earth by Myself;
25 Who (F)frustrates the signs (G)of the babblers,
And drives diviners mad;
Who turns wise men backward,
(H)And makes their knowledge foolishness;
26 (I)Who confirms the word of His servant,
And performs the counsel of His messengers;
Who says to Jerusalem, ‘You shall be inhabited,’
To the cities of Judah, ‘You shall be built,’
And I will raise up her waste places;
27 (J)Who says to the deep, ‘Be dry!
And I will dry up your rivers’;
28 Who says of (K)Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd,
And he shall perform all My pleasure,
Saying to Jerusalem, (L)“You shall be built,”
And to the temple, “Your foundation shall be laid.” ’

Matthew the Tax Collector(A)

27 (B)After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, (C)“Follow Me.” 28 So he left all, rose up, and (D)followed Him.

29 (E)Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And (F)there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30 [a]And their scribes and the Pharisees [b]complained against His disciples, saying, (G)“Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (H)I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(I)

33 Then they said to Him, (J)“Why[c] do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”

34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the (K)bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

36 (L)Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one [d]puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, [e]and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, [f]immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is [g]better.’ ”

Paul’s Paternal Care

14 I do not write these things to shame you, but (A)as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for (B)in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, (C)imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent (D)Timothy to you, (E)who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will (F)remind you of my ways in Christ, as I (G)teach everywhere (H)in every church.

18 (I)Now some are [a]puffed up, as though I were not coming to you. 19 (J)But I will come to you shortly, (K)if the Lord wills, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power. 20 For (L)the kingdom of God is not in word but in (M)power. 21 What do you want? (N)Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?
