This is what the Lord says to me:

“Go, post a lookout(A)
    and have him report what he sees.
When he sees chariots(B)
    with teams of horses,
riders on donkeys
    or riders on camels,(C)
let him be alert,
    fully alert.”

And the lookout[a](D) shouted,

“Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower;
    every night I stay at my post.
Look, here comes a man in a chariot(E)
    with a team of horses.
And he gives back the answer:
    ‘Babylon(F) has fallen,(G) has fallen!
All the images of its gods(H)
    lie shattered(I) on the ground!’”

  1. Isaiah 21:8 Dead Sea Scrolls and Syriac; Masoretic Text A lion

The Lord said to me, “Go find someone to guard this city. He must report whatever he sees. Whether he sees a chariot and a team of horses or men riding donkeys or camels, he must listen carefully.”[a]

Then one day the watchman[b] called out,

“My master, every day I have been in the watchtower[c] watching.
    Every night I have been standing on duty.
Look! I see a man in a chariot
    with a team of horses.[d]

The messenger said,
    “Babylon has been defeated!
    It has fallen to the ground!
All the statues of her false gods
    were thrown to the ground and broken to pieces.”

Footnotes

  1. Isaiah 21:7 Or “Whether he sees a column of teams of horsemen, columns of donkeys, or columns of camels, he must listen carefully.”
  2. Isaiah 21:8 the watchman “the seer,” an ancient title for a prophet. The standard Hebrew text has “a lion.”
  3. Isaiah 21:8 watchtower A tall building where guards stood and watched to see if anyone was coming near their city.
  4. Isaiah 21:9 a man … horses Or “a column of teams of horsemen.” This might be a team of horses pulling a war chariot or mounted archers in the Assyrian army who often worked in pairs.

This is what the Lord says to me,

“Go, station the lookout, let him report what he sees.

“When he sees a chariot, horsemen in pairs,
A train of donkeys and a train of camels,
Let him pay attention and listen closely, very closely.”

And the lookout called like a lion,

“O Lord, I stand continually on the watchtower by day,
And I am stationed every night at my guard post.

“Now look! Here comes a troop of riders, horsemen in pairs.”
And one said, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon;
And all the carved images of her gods are shattered on the ground.”
