The Day of the Lord

You, Lord, have abandoned(A) your people,
    the descendants of Jacob.(B)
They are full of superstitions from the East;
    they practice divination(C) like the Philistines(D)
    and embrace(E) pagan customs.(F)
Their land is full of silver and gold;(G)
    there is no end to their treasures.(H)
Their land is full of horses;(I)
    there is no end to their chariots.(J)
Their land is full of idols;(K)
    they bow down(L) to the work of their hands,(M)
    to what their fingers(N) have made.
So people will be brought low(O)
    and everyone humbled(P)
    do not forgive them.[a](Q)

10 Go into the rocks, hide(R) in the ground
    from the fearful presence of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty!(S)
11 The eyes of the arrogant(T) will be humbled(U)
    and human pride(V) brought low;(W)
the Lord alone will be exalted(X) in that day.(Y)

12 The Lord Almighty has a day(Z) in store
    for all the proud(AA) and lofty,(AB)
for all that is exalted(AC)
    (and they will be humbled),(AD)
13 for all the cedars of Lebanon,(AE) tall and lofty,(AF)
    and all the oaks of Bashan,(AG)
14 for all the towering mountains
    and all the high hills,(AH)
15 for every lofty tower(AI)
    and every fortified wall,(AJ)
16 for every trading ship[b](AK)
    and every stately vessel.
17 The arrogance of man will be brought low(AL)
    and human pride humbled;(AM)
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,(AN)
18     and the idols(AO) will totally disappear.(AP)

19 People will flee to caves(AQ) in the rocks
    and to holes in the ground(AR)
from the fearful presence(AS) of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty,(AT)
    when he rises to shake the earth.(AU)
20 In that day(AV) people will throw away
    to the moles and bats(AW)
their idols of silver and idols of gold,(AX)
    which they made to worship.(AY)
21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks(AZ)
    and to the overhanging crags
from the fearful presence of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty,(BA)
    when he rises(BB) to shake the earth.(BC)

22 Stop trusting in mere humans,(BD)
    who have but a breath(BE) in their nostrils.
    Why hold them in esteem?(BF)

Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah

See now, the Lord,
    the Lord Almighty,
is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah
    both supply and support:(BG)
all supplies of food(BH) and all supplies of water,(BI)
    the hero and the warrior,(BJ)
the judge and the prophet,
    the diviner(BK) and the elder,(BL)
the captain of fifty(BM) and the man of rank,(BN)
    the counselor, skilled craftsman(BO) and clever enchanter.(BP)

“I will make mere youths their officials;
    children will rule over them.”(BQ)

People will oppress each other—
    man against man, neighbor against neighbor.(BR)
The young will rise up against the old,
    the nobody against the honored.

A man will seize one of his brothers
    in his father’s house, and say,
“You have a cloak, you be our leader;
    take charge of this heap of ruins!”
But in that day(BS) he will cry out,
    “I have no remedy.(BT)
I have no food(BU) or clothing in my house;
    do not make me the leader of the people.”(BV)

Jerusalem staggers,
    Judah is falling;(BW)
their words(BX) and deeds(BY) are against the Lord,
    defying(BZ) his glorious presence.
The look on their faces testifies(CA) against them;
    they parade their sin like Sodom;(CB)
    they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
    They have brought disaster(CC) upon themselves.

10 Tell the righteous it will be well(CD) with them,
    for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.(CE)
11 Woe to the wicked!(CF)
    Disaster(CG) is upon them!
They will be paid back(CH)
    for what their hands have done.(CI)

12 Youths(CJ) oppress my people,
    women rule over them.
My people, your guides lead you astray;(CK)
    they turn you from the path.

13 The Lord takes his place in court;(CL)
    he rises to judge(CM) the people.
14 The Lord enters into judgment(CN)
    against the elders and leaders of his people:
“It is you who have ruined my vineyard;
    the plunder(CO) from the poor(CP) is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by crushing my people(CQ)
    and grinding(CR) the faces of the poor?”(CS)
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.(CT)

16 The Lord says,
    “The women of Zion(CU) are haughty,
walking along with outstretched necks,(CV)
    flirting with their eyes,
strutting along with swaying hips,
    with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17 Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion;
    the Lord will make their scalps bald.(CW)

18 In that day(CX) the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,(CY) 19 the earrings and bracelets(CZ) and veils,(DA) 20 the headdresses(DB) and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, 21 the signet rings and nose rings,(DC) 22 the fine robes and the capes and cloaks,(DD) the purses 23 and mirrors, and the linen garments(DE) and tiaras(DF) and shawls.

24 Instead of fragrance(DG) there will be a stench;(DH)
    instead of a sash,(DI) a rope;
instead of well-dressed hair, baldness;(DJ)
    instead of fine clothing, sackcloth;(DK)
    instead of beauty,(DL) branding.(DM)
25 Your men will fall by the sword,(DN)
    your warriors in battle.(DO)
26 The gates(DP) of Zion will lament and mourn;(DQ)
    destitute,(DR) she will sit on the ground.(DS)

In that day(DT) seven women
    will take hold of one man(DU)
and say, “We will eat our own food(DV)
    and provide our own clothes;
only let us be called by your name.
    Take away our disgrace!”(DW)

Prologue: Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom

Warning Against the Invitation of Sinful Men

Listen, my son,(A) to your father’s(B) instruction
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.(C)
They are a garland to grace your head
    and a chain to adorn your neck.(D)

10 My son, if sinful men entice(E) you,
    do not give in(F) to them.(G)
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
    let’s lie in wait(H) for innocent blood,
    let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow(I) them alive, like the grave,
    and whole, like those who go down to the pit;(J)
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
    and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
    we will all share the loot(K)”—
15 my son, do not go along with them,
    do not set foot(L) on their paths;(M)
16 for their feet rush into evil,(N)
    they are swift to shed blood.(O)
17 How useless to spread a net
    where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait(P) for their own blood;
    they ambush only themselves!(Q)
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
    it takes away the life of those who get it.(R)

Wisdom’s Rebuke

20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,(S)
    she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall[a] she cries out,
    at the city gate she makes her speech:

22 “How long will you who are simple(T) love your simple ways?
    How long will mockers delight in mockery
    and fools hate(U) knowledge?
23 Repent at my rebuke!
    Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
    I will make known to you my teachings.
24 But since you refuse(V) to listen when I call(W)
    and no one pays attention(X) when I stretch out my hand,
25 since you disregard all my advice
    and do not accept my rebuke,
26 I in turn will laugh(Y) when disaster(Z) strikes you;
    I will mock(AA) when calamity overtakes you(AB)
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
    when disaster(AC) sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
    when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer;(AD)
    they will look for me but will not find me,(AE)
29 since they hated knowledge
    and did not choose to fear the Lord.(AF)
30 Since they would not accept my advice
    and spurned my rebuke,(AG)
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
    and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.(AH)
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
    and the complacency of fools will destroy them;(AI)
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety(AJ)
    and be at ease, without fear of harm.”(AK)
