22 (A)Sever[a] yourselves from such a man,
Whose (B)breath is in his nostrils;
For [b]of what account is he?

Judgment on Judah and Jerusalem

For behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts,
(C)Takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah
(D)The[c] stock and the store,
The whole supply of bread and the whole supply of water;
(E)The mighty man and the man of war,
The judge and the prophet,
And the diviner and the elder;
The captain of fifty and the [d]honorable man,
The counselor and the skillful artisan,
And the expert enchanter.

“I will give (F)children[e] to be their princes,
And [f]babes shall rule over them.
The people will be oppressed,
Every one by another and every one by his neighbor;
The child will be insolent toward the [g]elder,
And the [h]base toward the honorable.”

When a man takes hold of his brother
In the house of his father, saying,
“You have clothing;
You be our ruler,
And let these ruins be under your [i]power,”
In that day he will protest, saying,
“I cannot cure your ills,
For in my house is neither food nor clothing;
Do not make me a ruler of the people.”

For (G)Jerusalem stumbled,
And Judah is fallen,
Because their tongue and their doings
Are against the Lord,
To provoke the eyes of His glory.
The look on their countenance witnesses against them,
And they declare their sin as (H)Sodom;
They do not hide it.
Woe to their soul!
For they have brought evil upon themselves.

10 “Say to the righteous (I)that it shall be well with them,
(J)For they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
11 Woe to the wicked! (K)It shall be ill with him,
For the reward of his hands shall be [j]given him.
12 As for My people, children are their oppressors,
And women rule over them.
O My people! (L)Those who lead you [k]cause you to err,
And destroy the way of your paths.”

Oppression and Luxury Condemned

13 The Lord stands up (M)to [l]plead,
And stands to judge the people.
14 The Lord will enter into judgment
With the elders of His people
And His princes:
“For you have [m]eaten up (N)the vineyard;
The plunder of the poor is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by (O)crushing My people
And grinding the faces of the poor?”
Says the Lord God of hosts.

16 Moreover the Lord says:

“Because the daughters of Zion are haughty,
And walk with [n]outstretched necks
And [o]wanton eyes,
Walking and [p]mincing as they go,
Making a jingling with their feet,
17 Therefore the Lord will strike with (P)a scab
The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion,
And the Lord will (Q)uncover their secret parts.”

18 In that day the Lord will take away the finery:
The jingling anklets, the [q]scarves, and the (R)crescents;
19 The pendants, the bracelets, and the veils;
20 The headdresses, the leg ornaments, and the headbands;
The perfume boxes, the charms,
21     and the rings;
The nose jewels,
22     the festal apparel, and the mantles;
The outer garments, the purses,
23     and the mirrors;
The fine linen, the turbans, and the robes.

24 And so it shall be:

Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench;
Instead of a sash, a rope;
Instead of well-set hair, (S)baldness;
Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth;
And [r]branding instead of beauty.
25 Your men shall fall by the sword,
And your [s]mighty in the war.

26 (T)Her gates shall lament and mourn,
And she being desolate (U)shall sit on the ground.

Jerusalem’s Glorious Future

And (V)in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying,
“We will (W)eat our own food and wear our own apparel;
Only let us be called by your name,
To take away (X)our reproach.”

The Renewal of Zion

In that day (Y)the Branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious;
And the fruit of the earth shall be excellent and appealing
For those of Israel who have escaped.

And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem (Z)will be called holy—everyone who is (AA)recorded among the living in Jerusalem. When (AB)the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the [t]blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning, then the Lord will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, (AC)a cloud and smoke by day and (AD)the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a [u]covering. And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, (AE)for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.

22 Cease for you from man, Whose breath [is] in his nostrils, For -- in what is he esteemed?

For, lo, the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, Is turning aside from Jerusalem, And from Judah, stay and staff, Every stay of bread, and every stay of water.

Hero and man of war, judge and prophet, And diviner and elder,

Head of fifty, and accepted of faces, And counsellor, and the wise of artificers, And the intelligent of charmers.

And I have made youths their heads, And sucklings rule over them.

And the people hath exacted -- man upon man, Even a man on his neighbour, Enlarge themselves do the youths against the aged, And the lightly esteemed against the honoured.

When one layeth hold on his brother, [Of] the house of his father, [by] the garment, `Come, a ruler thou art to us, And this ruin [is] under thy hand.'

He lifteth up, in that day, saying: `I am not a binder up, And in my house is neither bread nor garment, Ye do not make me a ruler of the people.'

For stumbled hath Jerusalem, and Judah hath fallen, For their tongue and their doings [are] against Jehovah, To provoke the eyes of His glory.

The appearance of their faces witnessed against them, And their sin, as Sodom, they declared, They have not hidden! Wo to their soul, For they have done to themselves evil.

10 Say ye to the righteous, that [it is] good, Because the fruit of their doings they eat.

11 Wo to the wicked -- evil, Because the deed of his hand is done to him.

12 My people -- its exactors [are] sucklings, And women have ruled over it. My people -- thy eulogists are causing to err, And the way of thy paths swallowed up.

13 Jehovah hath stood up to plead, And He is standing to judge the peoples.

14 Jehovah into judgment doth enter With elders of His people, and its heads: `And ye, ye have consumed the vineyard, Plunder of the poor [is] in your houses.

15 What -- to you? ye bruise My people, And the faces of the poor ye grind.' An affirmation of the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, And Jehovah saith:

16 `Because that daughters of Zion have been haughty, And they walk stretching out the neck, And deceiving [with] the eyes, Walking and mincing they go, And with their feet they make a tinkling,

17 The Lord also hath scabbed The crown of the head of daughters of Zion, And Jehovah their simplicity exposeth.

18 In that day doth the Lord turn aside The beauty of the tinkling ornaments, And of the embroidered works, And of the round tires like moons,

19 Of the drops, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,

20 Of the bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, And of the bands, And of the perfume boxes, and the amulets,

21 Of the seals, and of the nose-rings,

22 Of the costly apparel, and of the mantles, And of the coverings, and of the purses,

23 Of the mirrors, and of the linen garments, And of the hoods, and of the vails,

24 And it hath been, instead of spice is muck, And instead of a girdle, a rope, And instead of curled work, baldness, And instead of a stomacher a girdle of sackcloth.

25 For instead of glory, thy men by sword do fall, And thy might in battle.

26 And lamented and mourned have her openings, Yea, she hath been emptied, on the earth she sitteth!

And taken hold have seven women on one man, In that day, saying, `Our own bread we do eat, And our own raiment we put on, Only, let thy name be called over us, Remove thou our reproach.'

In that day is the Shoot of Jehovah for desire and for honour, And the fruit of the earth For excellence and for beauty to the escaped of Israel.

And it hath been, he who is left in Zion, And he who is remaining in Jerusalem, `Holy' is said of him, Of every one who is written for life in Jerusalem.

If the Lord hath washed away The filth of daughters of Zion, And the blood of Jerusalem purgeth from her midst, By the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.

Then hath Jehovah prepared Over every fixed place of Mount Zion, And over her convocations, A cloud by day, and smoke, And the shining of a flaming fire by night, That, over all honour a safe-guard,

And a covering may be, For a shadow by day from drought, And for a refuge, and for a hiding place, From inundation and from rain!

22 [a](A)Take no account of man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils;
For [b](B)why should he be esteemed?

God Will Remove the Leaders

For behold, the Lord [c]God of armies (C)is going to remove from Jerusalem and Judah
Both supply and support, the entire supply of bread
And the entire supply of water;
(D)The mighty man and the warrior,
The judge and the prophet,
The diviner and the elder,
The captain of fifty and the esteemed person,
The counselor and the expert artisan,
And the skillful enchanter.
And I will make mere (E)boys their leaders,
And [d]mischievous children will rule over them,
And the people will be (F)oppressed,
Each one by another, and each one by his (G)neighbor;
The youth will assault the elder,
And the contemptible person will assault the one honored.
When a man (H)lays hold of his brother in his father’s house, saying,
“You have a cloak, you shall be our ruler!
And these ruins will be under your [e]authority,”
He will [f]protest on that day, saying,
“I will not be your [g](I)healer,
For in my house there is neither bread nor cloak;
You should not appoint me ruler of the people.”
For (J)Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen,
Because their [h](K)speech and their actions are against the Lord,
To (L)rebel against [i]His glorious presence.
[j]The expression of their faces testifies against them,
And they [k]display their sin like (M)Sodom;
They do not even conceal it.
Woe to [l]them!
For they have (N)done evil to themselves.
10 Say to the (O)righteous that it will go well for them,
For they will eat the fruit of their actions.
11 Woe to the wicked! It will go badly for him,
For [m](P)what he deserves will be done to him.
12 My people! Their oppressors (Q)treat them violently,
And women rule over them.
My people! (R)Those who guide you lead you astray
And confuse the direction of your paths.

God Will Judge

13 (S)The Lord arises to contend,
And stands to judge the people.
14 The Lord (T)enters into judgment with the elders and leaders of His people,
“It is you who have [n](U)devoured the vineyard;
The (V)goods stolen from the poor are in your houses.
15 What do you mean by (W)crushing My people
And [o]oppressing the face of the poor?”
Declares the Lord [p]God of armies.

Judah’s Women Denounced

16 Moreover, the Lord said, “Because the (X)daughters of Zion are haughty
And walk with [q]heads held high and seductive eyes,
And go along with mincing steps
And jingle the anklets on their feet,
17 The Lord will afflict the scalp of the daughters of Zion with scabs,
And the Lord will make their foreheads bare.”

18 On that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, headbands, (Y)crescent ornaments, 19 dangling earrings, bracelets, veils, 20 (Z)headdresses, ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, amulets, 21 [r]finger rings, (AA)nose rings, 22 festive robes, outer garments, shawls, purses, 23 papyrus garments, undergarments, headbands, and veils.

24 Now it will come about that instead of (AB)balsam oil there will be a stench;
Instead of a belt, a rope;
Instead of (AC)well-set hair, a (AD)plucked-out scalp;
Instead of fine clothes, a (AE)robe of sackcloth;
And branding instead of beauty.
25 Your men will (AF)fall by the sword
And your [s]mighty ones in battle.
26 And her [t](AG)gates will lament and mourn,
And she will (AH)sit deserted on the ground.

A Remnant Prepared

For seven women will take hold of (AI)one man on that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes, only let us be called by your name; (AJ)take away our disgrace!”

On that day the (AK)Branch of the Lord will be beautiful and glorious, and the (AL)fruit of the earth will be the pride and the beauty of the (AM)survivors of Israel. And it will come about that the one who is (AN)left in Zion and remains behind in Jerusalem will be called (AO)holy—everyone who is (AP)recorded for life in Jerusalem. When the Lord has washed away the filth of the (AQ)daughters of Zion and [u]purged the (AR)bloodshed of Jerusalem from her midst, by the (AS)spirit of judgment and the (AT)spirit of [v]burning, then the Lord will create over the entire area of Mount Zion and over her assemblies (AU)a cloud by day, and smoke, and the brightness of a flaming fire by night; for over all the (AV)glory will be a canopy. And there will be a (AW)shelter to give shade from the heat by day, and refuge and [w]protection from the storm and the rain.
