All the lands are at rest and at peace;(A)
    they break into singing.(B)
Even the junipers(C) and the cedars of Lebanon
    gloat over you and say,
“Now that you have been laid low,
    no one comes to cut us down.”(D)

The realm of the dead(E) below is all astir
    to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed(F) to greet you—
    all those who were leaders(G) in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
    all those who were kings over the nations.(H)
10 They will all respond,
    they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
    you have become like us.”(I)
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,(J)
    along with the noise of your harps;(K)
maggots are spread out beneath you
    and worms(L) cover you.(M)

12 How you have fallen(N) from heaven,
    morning star,(O) son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
    you who once laid low the nations!(P)
13 You said in your heart,
    “I will ascend(Q) to the heavens;
I will raise my throne(R)
    above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,(S)
    on the utmost heights(T) of Mount Zaphon.[a]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;(U)
    I will make myself like the Most High.”(V)
15 But you are brought down(W) to the realm of the dead,(X)
    to the depths(Y) of the pit.(Z)

16 Those who see you stare at you,
    they ponder your fate:(AA)
“Is this the man who shook(AB) the earth
    and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the man who made the world a wilderness,(AC)
    who overthrew(AD) its cities
    and would not let his captives go home?”(AE)

18 All the kings of the nations lie in state,
    each in his own tomb.(AF)
19 But you are cast out(AG) of your tomb
    like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,(AH)
    with those pierced by the sword,(AI)
    those who descend to the stones of the pit.(AJ)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20     you will not join them in burial,(AK)
for you have destroyed your land
    and killed your people.

Let the offspring(AL) of the wicked(AM)
    never be mentioned(AN) again.
21 Prepare a place to slaughter his children(AO)
    for the sins of their ancestors;(AP)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
    and cover the earth with their cities.

22 “I will rise up(AQ) against them,”
    declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name(AR) and survivors,
    her offspring and descendants,(AS)
declares the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place for owls(AT)
    and into swampland;
I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,(AU)
    declares the Lord Almighty.(AV)

24 The Lord Almighty has sworn,(AW)

“Surely, as I have planned,(AX) so it will be,
    and as I have purposed, so it will happen.(AY)

A Prophecy Against the King of Tyre

28 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man(A), say to the ruler of Tyre, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘In the pride of your heart
    you say, “I am a god;
I sit on the throne(B) of a god
    in the heart of the seas.”(C)
But you are a mere mortal and not a god,
    though you think you are as wise as a god.(D)
Are you wiser than Daniel[a]?(E)
    Is no secret hidden from you?
By your wisdom and understanding
    you have gained wealth for yourself
and amassed gold and silver
    in your treasuries.(F)
By your great skill in trading(G)
    you have increased your wealth,(H)
and because of your wealth
    your heart has grown proud.(I)

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Because you think you are wise,
    as wise as a god,
I am going to bring foreigners against you,
    the most ruthless of nations;(J)
they will draw their swords against your beauty and wisdom(K)
    and pierce your shining splendor.(L)
They will bring you down to the pit,(M)
    and you will die a violent death(N)
    in the heart of the seas.(O)
Will you then say, “I am a god,”
    in the presence of those who kill you?
You will be but a mortal, not a god,(P)
    in the hands of those who slay you.(Q)
10 You will die the death of the uncircumcised(R)
    at the hands of foreigners.

I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

11 The word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, take up a lament(S) concerning the king of Tyre and say to him: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.(T)
13 You were in Eden,(U)
    the garden of God;(V)
every precious stone(W) adorned you:
    carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
    topaz, onyx and jasper,
    lapis lazuli, turquoise(X) and beryl.[b]
Your settings and mountings[c] were made of gold;
    on the day you were created they were prepared.(Y)
14 You were anointed(Z) as a guardian cherub,(AA)
    for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;
    you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways
    from the day you were created
    till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade
    you were filled with violence,(AB)
    and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,
    and I expelled you, guardian cherub,(AC)
    from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud(AD)
    on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom
    because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
    I made a spectacle of you before kings.(AE)
18 By your many sins and dishonest trade
    you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire(AF) come out from you,
    and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes(AG) on the ground
    in the sight of all who were watching.(AH)
19 All the nations who knew you
    are appalled(AI) at you;
you have come to a horrible end
    and will be no more.(AJ)’”

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I hope you will put up with(A) me in a little foolishness.(B) Yes, please put up with me!

11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows(A) I do!(B)

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles,(C) deceitful(D) workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.(E) 14 And no wonder, for Satan(F) himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.(G)

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(H) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(I) but as a fool.(J) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(K) I too will boast.(L) 19 You gladly put up with(M) fools since you are so wise!(N) 20 In fact, you even put up with(O) anyone who enslaves you(P) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(Q) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(R) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(S) Are they Israelites? So am I.(T) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(U)
