“My people who live in Zion,^(A)
    do not be afraid^(B) of the Assyrians,
who beat^(C) you with a rod^(D)
    and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.

¹³ I am bringing my righteousness^(A) near,
    it is not far away;
    and my salvation^(B) will not be delayed.
I will grant salvation to Zion,^(C)
    my splendor^(D) to Israel.

“He will not enter this city^(A)
    or shoot an arrow here.
He will not come before it with shield
    or build a siege ramp^(B) against it.
³⁴ By the way that he came he will return;^(C)
    he will not enter this city,”
declares the Lord.
³⁵ “I will defend^(D) this city and save it,
    for my sake^(E) and for the sake of David^(F) my servant!”

“Virgin Daughter^(A) Zion^(B)
    despises and mocks you.
Daughter Jerusalem
    tosses her head^(C) as you flee.

⁴ say^(A) to those with fearful hearts,^(B)
    “Be strong, do not fear;^(C)
your God will come,^(D)
    he will come with vengeance;^(E)
with divine retribution
    he will come to save^(F) you.”

¹⁴ The sinners^(A) in Zion are terrified;
    trembling^(B) grips the godless:
“Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?^(C)
    Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?”
¹⁵ Those who walk righteously^(D)
    and speak what is right,^(E)
who reject gain from extortion^(F)
    and keep their hands from accepting bribes,^(G)
who stop their ears against plots of murder
    and shut their eyes^(H) against contemplating evil—
¹⁶ they are the ones who will dwell on the heights,^(I)
    whose refuge^(J) will be the mountain fortress.^(K)
Their bread will be supplied,
    and water will not fail^(L) them.
