The Returning Remnant of Israel

20 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the remnant of Israel,
And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob,
(A)Will never again depend on him who [a]defeated them,
But will depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,
To the (B)Mighty God.
22 (C)For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea,
(D)A remnant of them will return;
The destruction decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
23 (E)For the Lord God of hosts
Will make a determined end
In the midst of all the land.

24 Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: “O My people, who dwell in Zion, (F)do not be afraid of the Assyrian. He shall strike you with a rod and lift up his staff against you, in the manner of (G)Egypt. 25 For yet a very little while (H)and the indignation will cease, as will My anger in their destruction.” 26 And the Lord of hosts will [b]stir up (I)a scourge for him like the slaughter of (J)Midian at the rock of Oreb; (K)as His rod was on the sea, so will He lift it up in the manner of Egypt.

27 It shall come to pass in that day
That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder,
And his yoke from your neck,
And the yoke will be destroyed because of (L)the anointing oil.

28 He has come to Aiath,
He has passed Migron;
At Michmash he has attended to his equipment.
29 They have gone [c]along (M)the ridge,
They have taken up lodging at Geba.
Ramah is afraid,
(N)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
30 [d]Lift up your voice,
O daughter (O)of Gallim!
Cause it to be heard as far as (P)Laish—
[e]O poor Anathoth!
31 (Q)Madmenah has fled,
The inhabitants of Gebim seek refuge.
32 As yet he will remain (R)at Nob that day;
He will (S)shake his fist at the mount of (T)the daughter of Zion,
The hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord,
The Lord of hosts,
Will lop off the bough with terror;
(U)Those of high stature will be hewn down,
And the haughty will be humbled.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron,
And Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

The Reign of Jesse’s Offspring(V)

11 There (W)shall come forth a [f]Rod from the [g]stem of (X)Jesse,
And (Y)a Branch shall [h]grow out of his roots.
(Z)The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

His delight is in the fear of the Lord,
And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes,
Nor decide by the hearing of His ears;
But (AA)with righteousness He shall judge the poor,
And decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
He shall (AB)strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins,
And faithfulness the belt of His waist.

“The(AC) wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
The leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
The calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
Their young ones shall lie down together;
And the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole,
And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den.
(AD)They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain,
For (AE)the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea.

10 “And(AF) in that day (AG)there shall be a Root of Jesse,
Who shall stand as a (AH)banner to the people;
For the (AI)Gentiles shall seek Him,
And His resting place shall be glorious.”

11 It shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord shall set His hand again the second time
To recover the remnant of His people who are left,
(AJ)From Assyria and Egypt,
From Pathros and Cush,
From Elam and Shinar,
From Hamath and the [i]islands of the sea.

12 He will set up a banner for the nations,
And will [j]assemble the outcasts of Israel,
And gather together (AK)the dispersed of Judah
From the four [k]corners of the earth.
13 Also (AL)the envy of Ephraim shall depart,
And the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off;
Ephraim shall not envy Judah,
And Judah shall not harass Ephraim.
14 But they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines toward the west;
Together they shall plunder the [l]people of the East;
(AM)They shall lay their hand on Edom and Moab;
And the people of Ammon shall obey them.
15 The Lord (AN)will utterly [m]destroy the tongue of the Sea of Egypt;
With His mighty wind He will shake His fist over [n]the River,
And strike it in the seven streams,
And make men cross over [o]dry-shod.
16 (AO)There will be a highway for the remnant of His people
Who will be left from Assyria,
(AP)As it was for Israel
In the day that he came up from the land of Egypt.

20 And it hath come to pass, in that day, The remnant of Israel, And the escaped of the house of Jacob, Do not add any more to lean on its smiter, And have leant on Jehovah, The Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21 A remnant returneth -- a remnant of Jacob, Unto the Mighty God.

22 For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, A remnant doth return of it, A consumption determined, Overflowing [with] righteousness.

23 For a consumption that is determined, The Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, Is making in the midst of all the land.

24 Therefore, thus said the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, `Be not afraid, my people, inhabiting Zion, because of Asshur, With a rod he doth smite thee, And his staff lifteth up against thee, in the way of Egypt.

25 For yet a very little, And the indignation hath been completed, And Mine anger by their wearing out.

26 And awaking for him is Jehovah of Hosts, A scourge like the smiting of Midian at the rock Oreb, And his rod [is] over the sea, And he hath lifted it in the way of Egypt.

27 And it hath come to pass, in that day, Turned is his burden from off thy shoulder, And his yoke from off thy neck, And destroyed hath been the yoke, because of prosperity.

28 He hath come in against Aiath, He hath passed over into Migron, At Michmash he looketh after his vessels.

29 They have gone over the passage, Geba they have made a lodging place, Trembled hath Rama, Gibeah of Saul fled.

30 Cry aloud [with] thy voice, daughter of Gallim, Give attention, Laish! answer her, Anathoth.

31 Fled away hath Madmenah, The inhabitants of the high places have hardened themselves.

32 Yet to-day in Nob to remain, Wave its hand doth the mount of the daughter of Zion, The hill of Jerusalem.

33 Lo, the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, Is lopping a branch with violence, And the high of stature are cut down, And the lofty are become low,

34 And He hath gone round the thickets of the forest with iron, And Lebanon by a mighty one falleth!

11 And a rod hath come out from the stock of Jesse, And a branch from his roots is fruitful.

Rested on him hath the Spirit of Jehovah, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and fear of Jehovah.

To refresh him in the fear of Jehovah, And by the sight of his eyes he judgeth not, Nor by the hearing of his ears decideth.

And he hath judged in righteousness the poor, And decided in uprightness for the humble of earth, And hath smitten earth with the rod of his mouth, And with the breath of his lips he putteth the wicked to death.

And righteousness hath been the girdle of his loins, And faithfulness -- the girdle of his reins.

And a wolf hath sojourned with a lamb, And a leopard with a kid doth lie down, And calf, and young lion, and fatling [are] together, And a little youth is leader over them.

And cow and bear do feed, Together lie down their young ones, And a lion as an ox eateth straw.

And played hath a suckling by the hole of an asp, And on the den of a cockatrice Hath the weaned one put his hand.

Evil they do not, nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For full hath been the earth with the knowledge of Jehovah, As the waters are covering the sea.

10 And there hath been, in that day, A root of Jesse that is standing for an ensign of peoples, Unto him do nations seek, And his rest hath been -- honour!

11 And it hath come to pass, in that day, The Lord addeth a second time his power, To get the remnant of His people that is left, From Asshur, and from Egypt, And from Pathros, and from Cush, And from Elam, and from Shinar, And from Hamath, and from isles of the sea,

12 And He hath lifted up an ensign to nations, And gathereth the driven away of Israel, And the scattered of Judah He assembleth, From the four wings of the earth.

13 And turned aside hath the envy of Ephraim, And the adversaries of Judah are cut off, Ephraim doth not envy Judah, And Judah doth not distress Ephraim.

14 And they have flown on the shoulder of the Philistines westward, Together they spoil the sons of the east, Edom and Moab sending forth their hand, And sons of Ammon obeying them.

15 And Jehovah hath devoted to destruction The tongue of the sea of Egypt, And hath waved His hand over the river, In the terror of his wind, And hath smitten it at the seven streams, And hath caused [men] to tread [it] with shoes.

16 And there hath been a highway, For the remnant of His people that is left, from Asshur, As there was for Israel in the day of his coming up out of the land of Egypt!

A Remnant Will Return

20 Now on that day the (A)remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob (B)who have escaped, will no longer rely on the one who struck them, but will truly (C)rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

21 A (D)remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the (E)mighty God.
22 For (F)though your people, Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A (G)destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

23 For a complete destruction, one that is determined, (H)the Lord [a]God of armies will execute in the midst of the whole land.

24 Therefore this is what the Lord [b]God of armies says: “My people, you who dwell in (I)Zion, (J)do not fear the Assyrian [c]who (K)strikes you with the rod, and lifts up his staff against you the way Egypt did. 25 For in a very (L)little while (M)My indignation against you will be ended and My anger will be directed toward their destruction.” 26 The Lord of armies will (N)wield a whip against him like the defeat of (O)Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His (P)staff will be over the sea, and He will lift it up (Q)the way He did in Egypt. 27 So it will be on that day, that [d]his (R)burden will be removed from your shoulders, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because (S)of fatness.

28 He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through (T)Migron;
At (U)Michmash he deposited his (V)baggage.
29 They have gone through (W)the pass, saying,
(X)Geba will be our encampment for the night.”
(Y)Ramah is terrified, and (Z)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
30 Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of (AA)Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and [e]wretched (AB)Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
32 Yet today he will halt at (AC)Nob;
He (AD)shakes his fist at the mountain of the [f](AE)daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord, the [g]God of armies, will lop off the branches with terrifying power;
Those also who are (AF)tall in stature will be cut down,
And those who are lofty will be brought low.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,
And (AG)Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

Righteous Reign of the Branch

11 Then a (AH)shoot will spring from the (AI)stem of Jesse,
And a (AJ)Branch from (AK)his roots will bear fruit.
The (AL)Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him,
The spirit of (AM)wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of counsel and (AN)strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And He will delight in the fear of the Lord,
And He will not judge by what His eyes (AO)see,
Nor make decisions by what His ears hear;
But with (AP)righteousness He will judge the (AQ)poor,
And decide with fairness for the (AR)humble of the earth;
And He will strike the earth with the (AS)rod of His mouth,
And with the (AT)breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.
Also (AU)righteousness will be the belt around His hips,
And (AV)faithfulness the belt around His waist.

And the (AW)wolf will dwell with the lamb,
And the leopard will lie down with the young goat,
And the calf and the young lion [h]and the fattened steer will be together;
And a little boy will lead them.
Also the cow and the bear will graze,
Their young will lie down together,
And the (AX)lion will eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra,
And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den.
They will (AY)not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain,
For the (AZ)earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea.

10 Then on that day
The (BA)nations will resort to the (BB)root of Jesse,
Who will stand as a (BC)signal flag for the peoples;
And His (BD)resting place will be [i]glorious.

The Restored Remnant

11 Then it will happen on that day that the Lord
Will again recover with His hand the second time
The (BE)remnant of His people who will remain,
From (BF)Assyria, (BG)Egypt, Pathros, Cush, (BH)Elam, Shinar, Hamath,
And from the [j](BI)islands of the sea.
12 And He will lift up a (BJ)flag for the nations
And (BK)assemble the banished ones of Israel,
And will gather the dispersed of Judah
From the four corners of the earth.
13 Then the (BL)jealousy of Ephraim will depart,
And those who harass Judah will be eliminated;
Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah,
And Judah will not harass Ephraim.
14 They will (BM)swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines on the (BN)west;
Together they will (BO)plunder the [k]people of the east;
[l]They will possess (BP)Edom and (BQ)Moab,
And the sons of Ammon will be [m]subject to them.
15 And the Lord will [n](BR)utterly destroy
The tongue of the [o]Sea of Egypt;
And He will (BS)wave His hand over the (BT)Euphrates River
With His scorching wind;
And He will strike it into seven streams
And make people walk over in dry sandals.
16 And there will be a (BU)highway from Assyria
For the (BV)remnant of His people who will be left,
Just as there was for Israel
On (BW)the day that they came up out of the land of Egypt.
