The Coming Assyrian Invasion

Then Yahweh said to me, “Take for yourself a large tablet and (A)write on it [a]in ordinary letters: (B)Concerning [b]Maher-shalal-hash-baz. And [c]I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, (C)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.” Then I drew near to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then Yahweh said to me, “Call his name [d](D)Maher-shalal-hash-baz, for (E)before the boy knows how to cry out ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of (F)Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

Again Yahweh spoke to me further, saying,

“Inasmuch as these people have (G)rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah
And rejoice in (H)Rezin and the son of Remaliah;
Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the (I)mighty and abundant waters of the [e](J)River—
The (K)king of Assyria and all his glory;
And it will (L)rise up over all its channels and go over all its banks.
Then (M)it will sweep on into Judah; it will overflow and pass through;
It will (N)reach even to the neck;
And the spread of its wings will [f]fill the breadth of [g]Your land, O (O)Immanuel.

Yahweh, a Sanctuary and a Stumbling Stone

(P)Be broken, O peoples, and be [h](Q)shattered;
And give ear, all remote places of the earth.
Gird yourselves, yet be [i]shattered;
Gird yourselves, yet be [j]shattered.
10 (R)Devise counsel, but it will be thwarted;
Speak a word, but (S)it will not stand,
For [k](T)God is with us.”

11 For thus Yahweh spoke to me with a (U)strong hand and disciplined me (V)not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

12 “You are not to say, ‘It is a (W)conspiracy!’
In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy;
And (X)you are not to fear [l]what they fear, and you shall not tremble.
13 It is (Y)Yahweh of hosts (Z)whom you should regard as holy.
And He shall be your fear,
And He shall be your cause of trembling.
14 Then He shall become a (AA)sanctuary;
But to both the houses of Israel, a (AB)stone to strike and a rock to stumble over,
And a snare and a (AC)trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many (AD)will stumble over them;
Then they will fall and be broken;
They will even be snared and caught.”

16 (AE)Bind up the testimony, (AF)seal the [m]law among (AG)my disciples. 17 And I will (AH)wait for Yahweh (AI)who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; and I will hope for Him. 18 (AJ)Behold, I and the children whom Yahweh has given me are for (AK)signs and wonders in Israel from Yahweh of hosts, who (AL)dwells on Mount Zion.

Darkness to Light Through the Prince of Peace

19 Now when they say to you, “(AM)Inquire of the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people (AN)inquire of their God? Should they (AO)inquire of the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the [n](AP)law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because (AQ)they have no dawn. 21 And they will pass through [o]the land (AR)hard-pressed and hungry, and it will be that when they are hungry, they will be angry and curse [p]their king and their God as they face upward. 22 Then they will (AS)look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be (AT)banished into thick darkness.

The Coming Assyrian Invasion

Then the Lord said to me, “Take a large piece of parchment[a] and write on it with an ordinary pen:[b](A) Maher-shalal-hash-baz.[c] I have appointed[d] trustworthy witnesses—the priest Uriah and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.”(B)

I was then intimate with the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. The Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz, for before the boy knows how to call ‘Father,’ or ‘Mother,’(C) the wealth of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria will be carried off to the king of Assyria.”(D)

The Lord spoke to me again:

Because these people rejected
the slowly flowing water of Shiloah
and rejoiced with[e] Rezin
and the son of Remaliah,(E)
the Lord will certainly bring against them
the mighty rushing water of the Euphrates River—
the king of Assyria and all his glory.
It will overflow its channels
and spill over all its banks.
It will pour into Judah,
flood over it, and sweep through,
reaching up to the neck;(F)
and its flooded banks[f]
will fill your entire land, Immanuel!(G)

Band together,[g] peoples, and be broken;
pay attention, all you distant lands;
prepare for war, and be broken;
prepare for war, and be broken.
10 Devise a plan; it will fail.(H)
Make a prediction; it will not happen.
For God is with us.[h](I)

The Lord of Armies, the Only Refuge

11 For this is what the Lord said to me with great power, to keep[i] me from going the way of this people:(J)

12 Do not call everything a conspiracy
that these people say is a conspiracy.(K)
Do not fear what they fear;(L)
do not be terrified.
13 You are to regard only the Lord of Armies as holy.(M)
Only he should be feared;(N)
only he should be held in awe.
14 He will be a sanctuary;(O)
but for the two houses of Israel,
he will be a stone(P) to stumble over
and a rock to trip over,(Q)
and a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 Many will stumble over these;(R)
they will fall and be broken;
they will be snared and captured.

16 Bind up the testimony.(S)
Seal up the instruction(T) among my disciples.
17 I will wait for the Lord,(U)
who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob.(V)
I will wait for him.

18 Here I am with the children the Lord has given me(W) to be signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of Armies who dwells on Mount Zion. 19 When they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the spiritists who chirp and mutter,”(X) shouldn’t a people inquire of their God?[j] Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?(Y) 20 Go to God’s instruction and testimony!(Z) If they do not speak according to this word, there will be no dawn for them.

21 They will wander through the land, dejected and hungry. When they are famished, they will become enraged, and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God. 22 They will look toward the earth(AA) and see only distress, darkness, and the gloom of affliction, and they will be driven into thick darkness.
