War against Jerusalem

7 Now it came about in the days of ^(A)Ahaz, the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that ^(B)Rezin the king of Aram and ^(C)Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but ^(D)could not ^[a]conquer it. ²When it was reported to the ^(E)house of David, saying, “The Arameans ^(F)have taken a stand by ^(G)Ephraim,” his heart and the hearts of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake from the wind.

³Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and your son ^[b]Shear-jashub, at the end of the ^(H)conduit of the upper pool, on the road to the ^[c]fuller’s field, ⁴and say to him, ‘Take care and be ^(I)calm, have no ^(J)fear and ^(K)do not be fainthearted because of these two stumps of smoldering ^(L)logs, on account of the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and the ^(M)son of Remaliah. ⁵Because ^(N)Aram, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has planned evil against you, saying, ⁶“Let’s go up against Judah and ^[d]terrorize it, and take it for ourselves by assault and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,” ⁷this is what the Lord ^[e]God says: “^(O)It shall not stand nor shall it come to pass. ⁸For the head of Aram is ^(P)Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin (now within another sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken to pieces, so that it is no longer a people), ⁹and the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. ^(Q)If you will not believe, you certainly shall not ^[f]last.”’”

The Child Immanuel

¹⁰Then the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, ¹¹“Ask for a ^(R)sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ^[g]make it deep as Sheol or high as ^[h]heaven.” ¹²But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I put the Lord to the test!” ¹³Then he said, “Listen now, ^(S)house of David! Is it too trivial a thing for you to ^[i]try the patience of men, that you will ^[j]^(T)try the patience of ^(U)my God as well? ¹⁴Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, ^(V)the ^[k]virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will name Him ^[l]^(W)Immanuel. ¹⁵He will eat ^[m]^(X)curds and honey ^[n]at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. ¹⁶^(Y)For before the boy knows enough to refuse evil and choose good, ^(Z)the land whose two kings you dread will be abandoned.

Trials to Come for Judah

¹⁷The Lord will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that ^(AA)Ephraim separated from Judah—the days of the ^(AB)king of Assyria.”

¹⁸On that day the Lord will ^(AC)whistle for the fly that is in the ^[o]^(AD)remotest part of the canals of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. ¹⁹They will all come and settle on the steep ^[p]ravines, on the ^(AE)ledges of the cliffs, ^(AF)on all the thorn bushes, and on all the watering places.

²⁰On that day the Lord will ^(AG)shave with a ^(AH)razor, ^(AI)hired from regions beyond ^(AJ)the Euphrates River (that is, with the king of Assyria), the head and the hair of the legs; and it will also remove the beard.

²¹Now on that day a person may keep alive only a ^(AK)heifer and a pair of sheep; ²²and because of the abundance of the milk produced he will eat ^[q]curds, for everyone who is left within the land will eat ^[r]^(AL)curds and honey.

²³And it will come about on that day, ^(AM)that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, valued at a thousand shekels of silver, will become ^(AN)briars and thorns. ²⁴People will come there with bows and arrows, because all the land will be briars and thorns. ²⁵As for all the hills which used to be cultivated with the plow, you will not go there for fear of briars and thorns; but they will become a place for ^[s]^(AO)pasturing oxen and for sheep to trample.

Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz^(A)

7 Now it came to pass in the days of ^(B)Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to make war against ^(C)it, but could not ^[a]prevail against it. ²And it was told to the house of David, saying, “Syria’s forces are ^[b]deployed in Ephraim.” So his heart and the heart of his people were moved as the trees of the woods are moved with the wind.

³Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and ^[c]Shear-Jashub your son, at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field, ⁴and say to him: ^[d]‘Take heed, and ^[e]be ^(D)quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and the son of Remaliah. ⁵Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have plotted evil against you, saying, ⁶“Let us go up against Judah and ^[f]trouble it, and let us make a gap in its wall for ourselves, and set a king over them, the son of Tabel”— ⁷thus says the Lord God:

^(E)“It shall not stand,
Nor shall it come to pass.
⁸^(F)For the head of Syria is Damascus,
And the head of Damascus is Rezin.
Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be ^[g]broken,
So that it will not be a people.
⁹The head of Ephraim is Samaria,
And the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son.
^(G)If you will not believe,
Surely you shall not be established.” ’ ”

The Immanuel Prophecy

¹⁰Moreover the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, ¹¹^(H)“Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ^[h]ask it either in the depth or in the height above.”

¹²But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!”

¹³Then he said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also? ¹⁴Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: ^(I)Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear ^(J)a Son, and shall call His name ^(K)Immanuel.^[i] ¹⁵Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good. ¹⁶^(L)For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by ^(M)both her kings. ¹⁷^(N)The Lord will bring the king of Assyria upon you and your people and your father’s house—days that have not come since the day that ^(O)Ephraim departed from Judah.”

¹⁸And it shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord ^(P)will whistle for the fly
That is in the farthest part of the rivers of Egypt,
And for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
¹⁹They will come, and all of them will rest
In the desolate valleys and in ^(Q)the clefts of the rocks,
And on all thorns and in all pastures.

²⁰In the same day the Lord will shave with a ^(R)hired ^(S)razor,
With those from beyond ^[j]the River, with the king of Assyria,
The head and the hair of the legs,
And will also remove the beard.

²¹It shall be in that day
That a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep;
²²So it shall be, from the abundance of milk they give,
That he will eat curds;
For curds and honey everyone will eat who is left in the land.

²³It shall happen in that day,
That wherever there could be a thousand vines
Worth a thousand shekels of silver,
^(T)It will be for briers and thorns.
²⁴With arrows and bows men will come there,
Because all the land will become briers and thorns.

²⁵And to any hill which could be dug with the hoe,
You will not go there for fear of briers and thorns;
But it will become a range for oxen
And a place for sheep to roam.

The Sign of Immanuel

7 When Ahaz^(A) son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, King Rezin^(B) of Aram^(C) and Pekah^(D) son of Remaliah^(E) king of Israel marched up to fight against Jerusalem, but they could not overpower it.

²Now the house of David^(F) was told, “Aram has allied itself with^[a] Ephraim^(G)”; so the hearts of Ahaz and his people were shaken,^(H) as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind.

³Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out, you and your son Shear-Jashub,^[b]^(I) to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field.^(J) ⁴Say to him, ‘Be careful, keep calm^(K) and don’t be afraid.^(L) Do not lose heart^(M) because of these two smoldering stubs^(N) of firewood—because of the fierce anger^(O) of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah.^(P) ⁵Aram, Ephraim and Remaliah’s^(Q) son have plotted^(R) your ruin, saying, ⁶“Let us invade Judah; let us tear it apart and divide it among ourselves, and make the son of Tabeel king over it.” ⁷Yet this is what the Sovereign Lord says:^(S)

“‘It will not take place,
    it will not happen,^(T)
⁸for the head of Aram is Damascus,^(U)
    and the head of Damascus is only Rezin.^(V)
Within sixty-five years
    Ephraim will be too shattered^(W) to be a people.
⁹The head of Ephraim is Samaria,^(X)
    and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son.
If you do not stand^(Y) firm in your faith,^(Z)
    you will not stand at all.’”^(AA)

¹⁰Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, ¹¹“Ask the Lord your God for a sign,^(AB) whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.^(AC)”

¹²But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.^(AD)”

¹³Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David!^(AE) Is it not enough^(AF) to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience^(AG) of my God^(AH) also? ¹⁴Therefore the Lord himself will give you^[c] a sign:^(AI) The virgin^[d]^(AJ) will conceive and give birth to a son,^(AK) and^[e] will call him Immanuel.^[f]^(AL) ¹⁵He will be eating curds^(AM) and honey^(AN) when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right, ¹⁶for before the boy knows^(AO) enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,^(AP) the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.^(AQ) ¹⁷The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away^(AR) from Judah—he will bring the king of Assyria.^(AS)”

Assyria, the Lord’s Instrument

¹⁸In that day^(AT) the Lord will whistle^(AU) for flies from the Nile delta in Egypt and for bees from the land of Assyria.^(AV) ¹⁹They will all come and settle in the steep ravines and in the crevices^(AW) in the rocks, on all the thornbushes^(AX) and at all the water holes. ²⁰In that day^(AY) the Lord will use^(AZ) a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates River^(BA)—the king of Assyria^(BB)—to shave your head and private parts, and to cut off your beard^(BC) also.^(BD) ²¹In that day,^(BE) a person will keep alive a young cow and two goats.^(BF) ²²And because of the abundance of the milk they give, there will be curds to eat. All who remain in the land will eat curds^(BG) and honey.^(BH) ²³In that day,^(BI) in every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,^[g]^(BJ) there will be only briers and thorns.^(BK) ²⁴Hunters will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers^(BL) and thorns. ²⁵As for all the hills^(BM) once cultivated by the hoe, you will no longer go there for fear of the briers and thorns;^(BN) they will become places where cattle are turned loose and where sheep run.^(BO)

8 Then the Lord said to me, “Take for yourself a large tablet and ^(A)write on it ^[a]in ordinary letters: ^[b]^(B)Maher-shalal-hash-baz. ²And ^[c]I will take to Myself faithful witnesses for testimony, ^(C)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.” ³So I approached the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Name him ^[d]^(D)Maher-shalal-hash-baz; ⁴for ^(E)before the boy knows how to cry out ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of ^(F)Damascus and the spoils of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

⁵Again the Lord spoke to me further, saying,

⁶“Inasmuch as these people have ^(G)rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah
And rejoice in ^(H)Rezin and the son of Remaliah;
⁷Now therefore, behold, the Lord is about to bring on them the ^(I)strong and abundant waters of the ^(J)Euphrates River,
That is, the ^(K)king of Assyria and all his glory;
And it will ^(L)rise over all its channels and go over all its banks.
⁸Then ^(M)it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through,
It will ^(N)reach as far as the neck;
And the spread of its wings will ^[e]fill the expanse of ^[f]your land, ^(O)Immanuel.

A Believing Remnant

⁹“^(P)Be broken, you peoples, and be ^[g]^(Q)shattered;
And listen, all remote places of the earth.
^[h]Get ready, yet be ^[i]shattered;
^[j]Get ready, yet be ^[k]shattered.
¹⁰^(R)Devise a plan, but it will fail;
State a ^[l]proposal, but ^(S)it will not stand,
For ^[m]^(T)God is with us.”

¹¹For so the Lord spoke to me ^[n]with ^(U)mighty power and instructed me ^(V)not to walk in the way of this people, saying,

¹²“You are not to say, ‘It is a ^(W)conspiracy!’
Regarding everything that this people call a conspiracy,
And ^(X)you are not to fear ^[o]what they fear or be in dread of it.
¹³It is the ^(Y)Lord of armies ^(Z)whom you are to regard as holy.
And He shall be your fear,
And He shall be your dread.
¹⁴Then He will become a ^(AA)sanctuary;
But to both houses of Israel, He will be a ^(AB)stone of stumbling and a rock ^[p]of offense,
And a snare and a ^(AC)trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
¹⁵Many ^(AD)will stumble over them,
Then they will fall and be broken;
They will be snared and caught.”

¹⁶^(AE)Bind up the testimony, ^(AF)seal the ^[q]Law among ^(AG)my disciples. ¹⁷And I will ^(AH)wait for the Lord ^(AI)who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will wait eagerly for Him. ¹⁸^(AJ)Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for ^(AK)signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of armies, who ^(AL)dwells on Mount Zion.

¹⁹When they say to you, “^(AM)Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should a people not ^(AN)consult their God? Should they ^(AO)consult the dead in behalf of the living? ²⁰To the ^[r]^(AP)Law and to the testimony! If they do not speak in accordance with this word, it is because ^(AQ)they have no dawn. ²¹They will pass through ^[s]the land ^(AR)dejected and hungry, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will become enraged and curse ^[t]their king and their God as they face upward. ²²Then they will ^(AS)look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be ^(AT)driven away into darkness.

Assyria Will Invade the Land

8 Moreover the Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll, and ^(A)write on it with a man’s pen concerning ^[a]Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. ²And I will take for Myself faithful witnesses to record, ^(B)Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”

³Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz; ⁴^(C)for before the child ^[b]shall have knowledge to cry ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ ^(D)the riches of Damascus and the ^[c]spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.”

⁵The Lord also spoke to me again, saying:

⁶“Inasmuch as these people refused
The waters of ^(E)Shiloah that flow softly,
And rejoice ^(F)in Rezin and in Remaliah’s son;
⁷Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them
The waters of ^[d]the River, strong and mighty—
The king of Assyria and all his glory;
He will ^[e]go up over all his channels
And go over all his banks.
⁸He will pass through Judah,
He will overflow and pass over,
^(G)He will reach up to the neck;
And the stretching out of his wings
Will ^[f]fill the breadth of Your land, O ^(H)Immanuel.^[g]

⁹“Be^(I) shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces!
Give ear, all you from far countries.
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
¹⁰^(J)Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
Speak the word, ^(K)but it will not stand,
^(L)For ^[h]God is with us.”

Fear God, Heed His Word

¹¹For the Lord spoke thus to me with ^[i]a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:

¹²“Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’
Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,
Nor be afraid of their ^[j]threats, nor be ^[k]troubled.
¹³The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
¹⁴^(M)He will be as a ^[l]sanctuary,
But ^(N)a stone of stumbling and a rock of ^[m]offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
¹⁵And many among them shall ^(O)stumble;
They shall fall and be broken,
Be snared and ^[n]taken.”

¹⁶Bind up the testimony,
Seal the law among my disciples.
¹⁷And I will wait on the Lord,
Who ^(P)hides His face from the house of Jacob;
And I ^(Q)will hope in Him.
¹⁸^(R)Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me!
We ^(S)are for signs and wonders in Israel
From the Lord of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.

¹⁹And when they say to you, ^(T)“Seek those who are mediums and wizards, ^(U)who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they ^(V)seek the dead on behalf of the living? ²⁰^(W)To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because ^(X)there^[o] is no light in them.

²¹They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and ^(Y)curse ^[p]their king and their God, and look upward. ²²Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.

Isaiah and His Children as Signs

8 The Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll^(A) and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”^[a]^(B) ²So I called in Uriah^(C) the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses^(D) for me. ³Then I made love to the prophetess,^(E) and she conceived and gave birth to a son.^(F) And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.^(G) ⁴For before the boy knows^(H) how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus^(I) and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.^(J)”

⁵The Lord spoke to me again:

⁶“Because this people has rejected^(K)
    the gently flowing waters of Shiloah^(L)
and rejoices over Rezin
    and the son of Remaliah,^(M)
⁷therefore the Lord is about to bring against them
    the mighty floodwaters^(N) of the Euphrates—
    the king of Assyria^(O) with all his pomp.^(P)
It will overflow all its channels,
    run over all its banks^(Q)
⁸and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,^(R)
    passing through it and reaching up to the neck.
Its outspread wings^(S) will cover the breadth of your land,
    Immanuel^[b]!”^(T)

⁹Raise the war cry,^[c]^(U) you nations, and be shattered!^(V)
    Listen, all you distant lands.
Prepare^(W) for battle, and be shattered!
    Prepare for battle, and be shattered!
¹⁰Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;^(X)
    propose your plan, but it will not stand,^(Y)
    for God is with us.^[d]^(Z)

¹¹This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,^(AA) warning me not to follow^(AB) the way of this people:

¹²“Do not call conspiracy^(AC)
    everything this people calls a conspiracy;
do not fear what they fear,^(AD)
    and do not dread it.^(AE)
¹³The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,^(AF)
    he is the one you are to fear,^(AG)
    he is the one you are to dread.^(AH)
¹⁴He will be a holy place;^(AI)
    for both Israel and Judah he will be
a stone^(AJ) that causes people to stumble^(AK)
    and a rock that makes them fall.^(AL)
And for the people of Jerusalem he will be
    a trap and a snare.^(AM)
¹⁵Many of them will stumble;^(AN)
    they will fall and be broken,
    they will be snared and captured.”

¹⁶Bind up this testimony of warning^(AO)
and seal^(AP) up God’s instruction among my disciples.
¹⁷I will wait^(AQ) for the Lord,
who is hiding^(AR) his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him.^(AS)

¹⁸Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.^(AT) We are signs^(AU) and symbols^(AV) in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.^(AW)

The Darkness Turns to Light

¹⁹When someone tells you to consult^(AX) mediums and spiritists,^(AY) who whisper and mutter,^(AZ) should not a people inquire^(BA) of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? ²⁰Consult God’s instruction^(BB) and the testimony of warning.^(BC) If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light^(BD) of dawn. ²¹Distressed and hungry,^(BE) they will roam through the land;^(BF) when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse^(BG) their king and their God. ²²Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,^(BH) and they will be thrust into utter darkness.^(BI)

Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace

9 ^[a]But there will be no more ^(A)gloom for her who was in anguish. In earlier times He ^(B)treated the ^(C)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He will make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the ^[b]Gentiles.

²^[c]^(D)The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
³^(E)You will multiply the nation,
You ^(F)will ^[d]increase ^[e]their joy;
They will rejoice in Your presence
As with the joy ^[f]of harvest,
As people ^(G)rejoice when they divide the spoils.
⁴For ^(H)You will break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their ^(I)oppressor, as ^[g]at the battle of ^(J)Midian.
⁵For every boot of the marching warrior in the roar of battle,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
⁶For a ^(K)Child will be born to us, a ^(L)Son will be given to us;
And the ^(M)government will ^[h]rest ^(N)on His shoulders;
And His name will be called ^(O)Wonderful Counselor, ^(P)Mighty God,
Eternal ^(Q)Father, Prince of ^(R)Peace.
⁷There will be ^(S)no end to the increase of His government or of peace
On the ^(T)throne of David and over ^[i]his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with ^(U)justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
^(V)The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.

God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance

⁸The Lord sends a ^[j]message against Jacob,
And it falls on Israel.
⁹And all the people know it,
That is, ^(W)Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria,
Asserting in pride and in ^(X)arrogance of heart:
¹⁰“The bricks have fallen down,
But we will ^(Y)rebuild with smooth stones;
The sycamores have been cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
¹¹Therefore the Lord raises superior adversaries against them from ^(Z)Rezin
And provokes their enemies,
¹²The Arameans from the east and the ^(AA)Philistines from the west;
And they ^(AB)devour Israel with ^[k]gaping jaws.
^(AC)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

¹³Yet the people ^(AD)do not turn back to Him who struck them,
Nor do they ^(AE)seek the Lord of armies.
¹⁴So the Lord cuts off ^(AF)head and tail from Israel,
Both palm branch and bulrush ^(AG)in a single day.
¹⁵The head is ^(AH)the elder and esteemed man,
And the prophet who teaches ^(AI)falsehood is the tail.
¹⁶^(AJ)For those who guide this people are leading them astray;
And those who are guided by them are ^[l]confused.
¹⁷Therefore the Lord does ^(AK)not rejoice over their young men,
^(AL)Nor does He have compassion on their ^[m]orphans or their widows;
For every one of them is ^(AM)godless and an ^(AN)evildoer,
And every ^(AO)mouth is speaking foolishness.
^(AP)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away,
And His hand is still stretched out.

¹⁸^(AQ)For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns;
It also sets the thickets of the forest aflame
And they roll upward in a column of smoke.
¹⁹By the ^(AR)wrath of the Lord of armies the ^(AS)land is burned,
And the ^(AT)people are like fuel for the fire;
No ^(AU)one spares his brother.
²⁰^[n]They devour what is on the right hand but are still ^(AV)hungry,
And ^[o]they eat what is on the left hand, but they are not satisfied;
Each of them eats the ^(AW)flesh of his own arm.
²¹Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
^(AX)And together they are against Judah.
^(AY)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

The Government of the Promised Son^(A)

9 Nevertheless ^(B)the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,
As when at ^(C)first He lightly esteemed
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
And ^(D)afterward more heavily oppressed her,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
In Galilee of the Gentiles.
²^(E)The people who walked in darkness
Have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them a light has shined.

³You have multiplied the nation
And ^[a]increased its joy;
They rejoice before You
According to the joy of harvest,
As men rejoice ^(F)when they divide the spoil.
⁴For You have broken the yoke of his burden
And the staff of his shoulder,
The rod of his oppressor,
As in the day of ^(G)Midian.
⁵For every warrior’s ^[b]sandal from the noisy battle,

The Punishment of Samaria

⁸The Lord sent a word against ^(Q)Jacob,
And it has fallen on Israel.
⁹All the people will know—
Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria—
Who say in pride and arrogance of heart:
¹⁰“The bricks have fallen down,
But we will rebuild with hewn stones;
The sycamores are cut down,
But we will replace them with cedars.”
¹¹Therefore the Lord shall set up
The adversaries of Rezin against him,
And spur his enemies on,
¹²The Syrians before and the Philistines behind;
And they shall devour Israel with an open mouth.

For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is ^[d]stretched out still.

¹³For the people do not turn to Him who strikes them,
Nor do they seek the Lord of hosts.
¹⁴Therefore the Lord will cut off head and tail from Israel,
Palm branch and bulrush ^(R)in one day.
¹⁵The elder and honorable, he is the head;
The prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail.
¹⁶For ^(S)the leaders of this people cause them to err,
And those who are led by them are destroyed.
¹⁷Therefore the Lord ^(T)will have no joy in their young men,
Nor have mercy on their fatherless and widows;
For everyone is a hypocrite and an evildoer,
And every mouth speaks ^[e]folly.

^(U)For all this His anger is not turned away,
But His hand is stretched out still.

9 ^[a]Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom^(A) for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,^(B) but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

²The people walking in darkness^(C)
    have seen a great light;^(D)
on those living in the land of deep darkness^(E)
    a light has dawned.^(F)
³You have enlarged the nation^(G)
    and increased their joy;^(H)
they rejoice before you
    as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.^(I)
⁴For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,^(J)
    you have shattered^(K)
the yoke^(L) that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,^(M)
    the rod of their oppressor.^(N)
⁵Every warrior’s boot used in battle
    and every garment rolled in blood

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

⁸The Lord has sent a message^(AG) against Jacob;
    it will fall on Israel.
⁹All the people will know it—
    Ephraim^(AH) and the inhabitants of Samaria^(AI)—
who say with pride
    and arrogance^(AJ) of heart,
¹⁰“The bricks have fallen down,
    but we will rebuild with dressed stone;^(AK)
the fig^(AL) trees have been felled,
    but we will replace them with cedars.^(AM)”
¹¹But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s^(AN) foes against them
    and has spurred their enemies on.
¹²Arameans^(AO) from the east and Philistines^(AP) from the west
    have devoured^(AQ) Israel with open mouth.

Yet for all this, his anger^(AR) is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.^(AS)

¹³But the people have not returned^(AT) to him who struck^(AU) them,
    nor have they sought^(AV) the Lord Almighty.

10 Woe to those who ^(A)enact unjust statutes
And to those who constantly record ^[a]harmful decisions,
²So as ^(B)to ^[b]deprive the needy of justice
And rob the poor among My people of their rights,
So ^(C)that widows may be their spoil
And that they may plunder the ^[c]orphans.
³Now ^(D)what will you do in the ^(E)day of punishment,
And in the devastation which will come ^(F)from afar?
^(G)To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your wealth?
⁴Nothing remains but to crouch ^[d]among the ^(H)captives
Or fall ^[e]among those ^(I)killed.
^(J)In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away
And His hand is still stretched out.

⁵Woe to ^(K)Assyria, the ^(L)rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hands is ^(M)My indignation,

And commission it against the ^(O)people of My fury
To capture spoils and ^(P)to seize plunder,

¹²So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His ^(Z)work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say, “I will ^[k]punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and ^(AA)the arrogant pride of his eyes.” ¹³For ^(AB)he has said,

“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,
Because I have understanding;
And I ^(AC)removed the boundaries of the peoples
And plundered their treasures,
And like a powerful man I brought down ^[l]their inhabitants,
¹⁴And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a ^(AD)nest,
And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth;
And there was not one that flapped its wing, opened its beak, or chirped.”

¹⁵Is the ^(AE)axe to ^(AF)boast itself over the one who chops with it?
Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it?
That would be like ^(AG)a ^[m]club wielding those who lift it,
Or like ^(AH)a rod lifting the one who is not wood.
¹⁶Therefore the Lord, the ^[n]God of armies, will send a ^(AI)wasting disease among his ^(AJ)stout warriors;
And under his ^(AK)glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.
¹⁷And the ^(AL)Light of Israel will become a fire and ^[o]Israel’s ^(AM)Holy One a flame,
And it will ^(AN)burn and devour ^[p]his thorns and his briars in a single day.
¹⁸And He will ^(AO)destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,
And it will be as when a sick person wastes away.
¹⁹And the ^(AP)rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number
That a child could write them down.

A Remnant Will Return

²⁰Now on that day the ^(AQ)remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob ^(AR)who have escaped, will no longer rely on the one who struck them, but will truly ^(AS)rely on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

²¹A ^(AT)remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the ^(AU)mighty God.
²²For ^(AV)though your people, Israel, may be like the sand of the sea,
Only a remnant within them will return;
A ^(AW)destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

²³For a complete destruction, one that is determined, ^(AX)the Lord ^[q]God of armies will execute in the midst of the whole land.

²⁴Therefore this is what the Lord ^[r]God of armies says: “My people, you who dwell in ^(AY)Zion, ^(AZ)do not fear the Assyrian ^[s]who ^(BA)strikes you with the rod, and lifts up his staff against you the way Egypt did. ²⁵For in a very ^(BB)little while ^(BC)My indignation against you will be ended and My anger will be directed toward their destruction.” ²⁶The Lord of armies will ^(BD)wield a whip against him like the defeat of ^(BE)Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His ^(BF)staff will be over the sea, and He will lift it up ^(BG)the way He did in Egypt. ²⁷So it will be on that day, that ^[t]his ^(BH)burden will be removed from your shoulders, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because ^(BI)of fatness.

²⁸He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through ^(BJ)Migron;
At ^(BK)Michmash he deposited his ^(BL)baggage.
²⁹They have gone through ^(BM)the pass, saying,
“^(BN)Geba will be our encampment for the night.”
^(BO)Ramah is terrified, and ^(BP)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
³⁰Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of ^(BQ)Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and ^[u]wretched ^(BR)Anathoth!
³¹Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
³²Yet today he will halt at ^(BS)Nob;
He ^(BT)shakes his fist at the mountain of the ^[v]^(BU)daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

³³Behold, the Lord, the ^[w]God of armies, will lop off the branches with terrifying power;

And those who are lofty will be brought low.

10 “Woe to those who ^(A)decree unrighteous decrees,
Who write misfortune,
Which they have prescribed
²To rob the needy of justice,
And to take what is right from the poor of My people,
That widows may be their prey,
And that they may rob the fatherless.
³^(B)What will you do in ^(C)the day of punishment,
And in the desolation which will come from ^(D)afar?
To whom will you flee for help?
And where will you leave your glory?
⁴Without Me they shall bow down among the ^(E)prisoners,

^(F)For all this His anger is not turned away,

Arrogant Assyria Also Judged

⁵“Woe to Assyria, ^(G)the rod of My anger
And the staff in whose hand is My indignation.
⁶I will send him against ^(H)an ungodly nation,
And against the people of My wrath
I will ^(I)give him charge,
To seize the spoil, to take the prey,
And to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
⁷^(J)Yet he does not mean so,
Nor does his heart think so;
But it is in his heart to destroy,
And cut off not a few nations.
⁸^(K)For he says,
‘Are not my princes altogether kings?
⁹Is not ^(L)Calno ^(M)like Carchemish?
Is not Hamath like Arpad?
Is not Samaria ^(N)like Damascus?
¹⁰As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols,
Whose carved images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria,

As if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up,
Or as if a staff could lift up, as if it were not wood!

Will send leanness among his fat ones;
And under his glory

The Returning Remnant of Israel

²⁰And it shall come to pass in that day
That the remnant of Israel,
And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob,
^(V)Will never again depend on him who ^[e]defeated them,
But will depend on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
²¹The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob,
To the ^(W)Mighty God.
²²^(X)For though your people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea,
^(Y)A remnant of them will return;
The destruction decreed shall overflow with righteousness.
²³^(Z)For the Lord God of hosts
Will make a determined end
In the midst of all the land.

²⁴Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts: “O My people, who dwell in Zion, ^(AA)do not be afraid of the Assyrian.     to those who issue oppressive decrees,^(B)
²to deprive^(C) the poor of their rights
    and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,^(D)
making widows their prey
    and robbing the fatherless.^(E)
³What will you do on the day of reckoning,^(F)
    when disaster^(G) comes from afar?
To whom will you run for help?^(H)
    Where will you leave your riches?

God’s Judgment on Assyria

⁵“Woe^(L) to the Assyrian,^(M) the rod^(N) of my anger,

⁶I send him against a godless^(Q) nation,
    I dispatch^(R) him against a people who anger me,^(S)
to seize loot and snatch plunder,^(T)
    and to trample^(U) them down like mud in the streets.

his purpose is to destroy,
    to put an end to many nations.
⁸‘Are not my commanders^(W) all kings?’ he says.

Is not Hamath^(Z) like Arpad,^(AA)
    and Samaria^(AB) like Damascus?^(AC)
¹⁰As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,^(AD)
    kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
¹¹shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images
    as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?^(AE)’”

¹²When the Lord has finished all his work^(AF) against Mount Zion^(AG) and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria^(AH) for the willful pride^(AI) of his heart and the haughty look^(AJ) in his eyes. ¹³For he says:

“‘By the strength of my hand^(AK) I have done this,^(AL)
    and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
    I plundered their treasures;^(AM)
    like a mighty one I subdued^[a] their kings.^(AN)
¹⁴As one reaches into a nest,^(AO)
    so my hand reached for the wealth^(AP) of the nations;
as people gather abandoned eggs,

¹⁵Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
    or the saw boast against the one who uses it?^(AS)
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,

¹⁶Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    will send a wasting disease^(AU) upon his sturdy warriors;^(AV)
under his pomp^(AW) a fire^(AX) will be kindled
    like a blazing flame.

in a single day it will burn and consume

The Remnant of Israel

²⁰In that day^(BG) the remnant of Israel,
    the survivors^(BH) of Jacob,

but will truly rely^(BK) on the Lord,
    the Holy One of Israel.^(BL)
²¹A remnant^(BM) will return,^[b]^(BN) a remnant of Jacob

Destruction has been decreed,^(BR)

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 ^(A)When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples, ²“^(B)You know that after two days ^(C)the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man is to be ^(D)handed over for crucifixion.”

³^(E)At that time the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered together in ^(F)the courtyard of the high priest named ^(G)Caiaphas; ⁴and they ^(H)plotted together to arrest Jesus covertly and kill Him. ⁵But they were saying, “Not during the festival, ^(I)otherwise a riot might occur among the people.”

The Precious Ointment

⁶^(J)Now when Jesus was in ^(K)Bethany, at the home of Simon ^[a]the Leper, ⁷^(L)a woman came to Him with an alabaster vial of very expensive perfume, and she poured it on His head as He was reclining at the table. ⁸But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste? ⁹For this perfume could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” ¹⁰But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you bothering the woman? For she has done a good deed for Me. ¹¹For you always have ^(M)the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. ¹²For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it ^(N)to prepare Me for burial. ¹³Truly I say to you, ^(O)wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

Judas’ Bargain

¹⁴^(P)Then one of the twelve, named ^(Q)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests ¹⁵and said, “What are you willing to give me ^[b]to ^[c]^(R)betray Him to you?” And ^(S)they set out for him thirty ^[d]pieces of silver. ¹⁶And from then on he looked for a good opportunity to ^[e]betray ^[f]Jesus.

¹⁷^(T)Now on the first day of ^[g]^(U)Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and ^[h]asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?” ¹⁸And He said, “Go into the city to ^(V)a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “^(W)My time is near; I am keeping the Passover at your house with My disciples.”’” ¹⁹The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Last Passover

The Lord’s Supper Instituted

²⁶^(AF)Now while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and ^[k]^(AG)after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” ²⁷And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; ²⁸for ^(AH)this is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for ^(AI)many for forgiveness of sins. ²⁹But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it with you, new, in My Father’s kingdom.”

The Garden of Gethsemane

³⁶^(AS)Then Jesus *came with them to a place called ^[o]^(AT)Gethsemane, and *told His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷And He took ^(AU)Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with Him, and began to be grieved and distressed. ³⁸Then He *said to them, “^(AV)My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and ^(AW)keep watch with Me.”

³⁹And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let ^(AX)this cup pass from Me; ^(AY)yet not as I will, but as You will.” ⁴⁰And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and He *said to Peter, “So, you men could not ^(AZ)keep watch with Me for one hour? ⁴¹^(BA)Keep watching and praying, so that you do not come into temptation; ^(BB)the spirit is ^[p]willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest

⁴⁷^(BF)And while He was still speaking, behold, ^(BG)Judas, one of the twelve, came ^[s]accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. ⁴⁸Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign previously, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him.” ⁴⁹And immediately Judas went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, ^(BH)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. ⁵⁰But Jesus said to him, “^(BI)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested Him.

Jesus before Caiaphas

⁵⁷^(BS)Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to ^(BT)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. ⁵⁸But ^(BU)Peter was following Him at a distance, as far as the ^(BV)courtyard of the high priest, and he came inside and sat down with the ^[w]^(BW)officers to see the outcome.

⁵⁹Now the chief priests and the entire ^[x]^(BX)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. ⁶⁰They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on ^(BY)two came forward, ⁶¹and said, “This man stated, ‘^(BZ)I am able to destroy the ^[y]temple of God and to rebuild it ^[z]in three days.’” ⁶²The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You offer no answer for what these men are testifying against You?” ⁶³But ^(CA)Jesus kept silent. ^(CB)And the high priest said to Him, “I ^(CC)place You under oath by ^(CD)the living God, to tell us whether You are the ^[aa]Christ, ^(CE)the Son of God.” ⁶⁴Jesus *said to him, “^(CF)You have said it yourself. ⁶⁷^(CK)Then they ^(CL)spit in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others ^[ac]slapped Him, ⁶⁸and said, “^(CM)Prophesy to us, You ^[ad]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Peter’s Denials

⁶⁹^(CN)Now Peter was sitting outside in the ^(CO)courtyard, and a slave woman came to him and said, “You too were with Jesus the Galilean.” ⁷⁰But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” ⁷¹When he had gone out to the gateway, another slave woman saw him and *said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” ⁷²And again he denied it, with an oath: “I do not know the man.” ⁷³A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “You really are one of them as well, ^(CP)since even the way you talk ^[ae]gives you away.” ⁷⁴Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵And Peter remembered the statement that Jesus had ^[af]made: “^(CQ)Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin^(BK)

⁵⁷^(BL)And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. ⁵⁸But ^(BM)Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.

⁵⁹Now the chief priests, ^[k]the elders, and all the council sought ^(BN)false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, ⁶⁰^[l]but found none. Even though ^(BO)many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last ^(BP)two ^[m]false witnesses came forward ⁶¹and said, “This fellow said, ^(BQ)‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”

⁶²^(BR)And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” ⁶³But ^(BS)Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, ^(BT)“I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”

⁶⁴Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, ^(BU)hereafter you will see the Son of Man ^(BV)sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

⁶⁵^(BW)Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His ^(BX)blasphemy! ⁶⁶What do you think?”

They answered and said, ^(BY)“He is deserving of death.”

⁶⁷^(BZ)Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and ^(CA)others struck Him with ^[n]the palms of their hands, ⁶⁸saying, ^(CB)“Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly^(CC)

⁶⁹^(CD)Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.”

⁷⁰But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”

⁷¹And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

⁷²But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man!”

⁷³And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your ^(CE)speech betrays you.”

⁷⁴Then ^(CF)he began to ^[o]curse and ^[p]swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, ^(CG)“Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

The Plot Against Jesus^(A)

26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,^(B) he said to his disciples, ²“As you know, the Passover^(C) is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

³Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled^(D) in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,^(E) ⁴and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.^(F) ⁵“But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot^(G) among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany^(H)^(I)

⁶While Jesus was in Bethany^(J) in the home of Simon the Leper, ⁷a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

⁸When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. ⁹“This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”

¹⁰Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. ¹¹The poor you will always have with you,^[a]^(K) but you will not always have me. ¹²When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.^(L) ¹³Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus^(M)

¹⁴Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot^(N)—went to the chief priests ¹⁵and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.^(O) ¹⁶From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Last Supper^(P)^(Q)^(R)

¹⁷On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,^(S) the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”^(T)

¹⁸He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time^(U) is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” ¹⁹So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

²⁰When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. ²¹And while they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”^(V)

²²They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

²³Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.^(W) ²⁴The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.^(X) But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

²⁵Then Judas, the one who would betray him,^(Y) said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”^(Z)

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”

²⁶While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it^(AA) and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

²⁷Then he took a cup,^(AB) and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. ²⁸This is my blood of the^[b] covenant,^(AC) which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.^(AD) ²⁹I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you^(AE) in my Father’s kingdom.”

³⁰When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.^(AF)

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial^(AG)

³¹Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,^(AH) for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’^[c]^(AI)

³²But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”^(AJ)

³³Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

³⁴“Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”^(AK)

³⁵But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you,^(AL) I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane^(AM)

³⁶Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” ³⁷He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee^(AN) along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. ³⁸Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow^(AO) to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”^(AP)

³⁹Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup^(AQ) be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”^(AR)

⁴⁰Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me^(AS) for one hour?” he asked Peter. ⁴¹“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.^(AT) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁴²He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”^(AU)

⁴³When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

⁴⁵Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour^(AV) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested^(AW)

⁴⁷While he was still speaking, Judas,^(AX) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. ⁴⁸Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” ⁴⁹Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”^(AY) and kissed him.

⁵⁰Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”^[d]^(AZ)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. ⁵¹With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,^(BA) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.^(BB)

⁵²“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.^(BC) ⁵³Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?^(BD) ⁵⁴But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled^(BE) that say it must happen in this way?”

⁵⁵In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,^(BF) and you did not arrest me. ⁵⁶But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”^(BG) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin^(BH)

⁵⁷Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas^(BI) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. ⁵⁸But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.^(BJ) He entered and sat down with the guards^(BK) to see the outcome.

⁵⁹The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin^(BL) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. ⁶⁰But they did not find any, though many false witnesses^(BM) came forward.

Finally two^(BN) came forward ⁶¹and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”^(BO)

⁶²Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” ⁶³But Jesus remained silent.^(BP)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath^(BQ) by the living God:^(BR) Tell us if you are the Messiah,^(BS) the Son of God.”^(BT)

⁶⁴“You have said so,”^(BU) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One^(BV) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”^[e]^(BW)

⁶⁵Then the high priest tore his clothes^(BX) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. ⁶⁶What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”^(BY) they answered.

⁶⁷Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.^(BZ) Others slapped him ⁶⁸and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”^(CA)

Peter Disowns Jesus^(CB)

⁶⁹Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

⁷⁰But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

⁷¹Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

⁷²He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

⁷³After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

⁷⁴Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”^(CC) And he went outside and wept bitterly.
