Instead of your (A)shame you will have a (B)double portion,
And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion.
Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land,
(C)Everlasting joy will be theirs.
For I, the Lord, (D)love justice,
I hate robbery [a]in the burnt offering;
And I will faithfully give them their reward,
And make an (E)everlasting covenant with them.
Then their offspring will be known among the nations,
And their descendants in the midst of the peoples.
All who see them will recognize them
Because they are the (F)offspring whom the Lord has blessed.

10 I will (G)rejoice greatly in the Lord,
My soul will be joyful in (H)my God;
For He has (I)clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness,
As a groom puts on a turban,
And (J)as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the (K)earth produces its sprouts,
And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up,
So the Lord [b]God will (L)cause (M)righteousness and praise
To spring up before all the nations.

The Lord Loves Justice

I, the Lord, love justice!
But I hate robbery
    and injustice.[a]
My people, I solemnly promise
to reward you
    with an eternal agreement.
Your descendants will be known
    in every nation.
All who see them will realize
that they have been blessed,
    by me, the Lord.

Celebrate and Shout

10 (A) I celebrate and shout
    because of my Lord God.
His saving power and justice
are the very clothes I wear.
They are more beautiful
than the jewelry worn
    by a bride or groom.
11 The Lord will bring about
justice and praise
    in every nation on earth,
like flowers blooming
    in a garden.

Footnotes

  1. 61.8 But … injustice: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.

In the past, other people shamed you and said bad things to you. You were shamed much more than any other people. So in your land you will get two times more than other people. You will get the joy that continues forever. That’s because I am the Lord and I love justice. I hate stealing and everything that is wrong. So I will give the people what they deserve. I will make an agreement with my people forever. Their descendants will be known throughout the earth, and everyone will know their children. Whoever sees them will know that the Lord has blessed them.

God’s Servant Brings Salvation

10 The Lord makes me very happy.
I am completely happy with my God.
He dressed me in the clothes of salvation.
He put the victory coat on me.
I look like a man dressed for his wedding,
like a bride covered with jewels.
11 The earth causes plants to grow,
and a garden makes the seeds planted there rise up.
In the same way, the Lord God will make goodness and praise
    grow throughout the nations.

Instead of shame and dishonor, you shall have a double portion of prosperity and everlasting joy.

For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and wrong. I will faithfully reward my people for their suffering and make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known and honored among the nations; all shall realize that they are a people God has blessed.

10 Let me tell you how happy God has made me! For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and draped about me the robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom in his wedding suit or a bride with her jewels. 11 The Lord will show the nations of the world his justice; all will praise him. His righteousness shall be like a budding tree, or like a garden in early spring, full of young plants springing up everywhere.
