The Mountain of the Lord

The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

(A)It shall come to pass in the latter days
    that (B)the mountain of the house of the Lord
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and shall be lifted up above the hills;
and (C)all the nations shall flow to it,
    and (D)many peoples shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.”
For (E)out of Zion shall go forth the law,[a]
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
    and shall decide disputes for many peoples;
(F)and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
    and their spears into pruning hooks;
(G)nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war anymore.

O house of Jacob,
    come, let us walk
    in (H)the light of the Lord.

The Day of the Lord

For you have rejected your people,
    the house of Jacob,
because they are full of things (I)from the east
    and (J)of fortune-tellers (K)like the Philistines,
    and they (L)strike hands with the children of foreigners.
Their land is (M)filled with silver and gold,
    and there is no end to their treasures;
their land is (N)filled with horses,
    and there is no end to their chariots.
Their land is (O)filled with idols;
    they bow down to (P)the work of their hands,
    to what their own fingers have made.
So man (Q)is humbled,
    and each one (R)is brought low—
    do not forgive them!
10 (S)Enter into the rock
    and hide in the dust
(T)from before the terror of the Lord,
    and from the splendor of his majesty.
11 (U)The haughty looks of man shall be brought low,
    and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled,
and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

12 (V)For the Lord of hosts has a day
    against all that is proud and lofty,
    against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low;
13 against all the (W)cedars of Lebanon,
    lofty and lifted up;
    and against all the (X)oaks of Bashan;
14 against all (Y)the lofty mountains,
    and against all the uplifted hills;
15 against every high tower,
    and against every fortified wall;
16 against all (Z)the ships of Tarshish,
    and against all the beautiful craft.
17 (AA)And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled,
    and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low,
    and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
18 (AB)And the idols shall utterly pass away.
19 (AC)And people shall enter the caves of the rocks
    and the holes of the ground,[b]
from before the terror of the Lord,
    and from the splendor of his majesty,
    (AD)when he rises to terrify the earth.

20 In that day (AE)mankind will cast away
    their idols of silver and their idols of gold,
which they made for themselves to worship,
    to the moles and to the (AF)bats,
21 (AG)to enter the caverns of the rocks
    and the clefts of the cliffs,
from before the terror of the Lord,
    and from the splendor of his majesty,
    (AH)when he rises to terrify the earth.
22 (AI)Stop regarding man
    (AJ)in whose nostrils is breath,
    for of what account is he?

Judgment on Judah and Jerusalem

For behold, the (AK)Lord God of hosts
    is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah
support and supply,[c]
    all (AL)support of bread,
    and all support of water;
(AM)the mighty man and the soldier,
    the judge and the prophet,
    the diviner and the elder,
the captain of fifty
    and the man of rank,
the counselor and the skillful magician
    and the expert in charms.
(AN)And I will make boys their princes,
    and infants[d] shall rule over them.
(AO)And the people will oppress one another,
    every one his fellow
    and every one his neighbor;
the youth will be insolent to the elder,
    and the despised to the honorable.

For (AP)a man will take hold of his brother
    in the house of his father, saying:
“You have a cloak;
    you shall be our leader,
and this heap of ruins
    shall be under your rule”;
in that day he will speak out, saying:
“I will not be a (AQ)healer;[e]
    in my house there is neither bread nor cloak;
you shall not make me
    leader of the people.”
For Jerusalem has stumbled,
    and Judah has fallen,
because their (AR)speech and their deeds are against the Lord,
    (AS)defying his glorious presence.[f]

For the look on their faces bears witness against them;
    they proclaim their sin (AT)like Sodom;
    they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
    (AU)For they have brought evil on themselves.
10 (AV)Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them,
    (AW)for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.
11 (AX)Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him,
    for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him.
12 My people—(AY)infants are their oppressors,
    and women rule over them.
O my people, (AZ)your guides mislead you
    and they have swallowed up[g] the course of your paths.

13 The Lord (BA)has taken his place to contend;
    he stands to judge peoples.
14 The Lord will enter into judgment
    with the (BB)elders and princes of his people:
“It is you who (BC)have devoured[h] the vineyard,
    (BD)the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by (BE)crushing my people,
    by grinding the face of the poor?”
declares the Lord God of hosts.

16 The Lord said:
(BF)Because (BG)the daughters of Zion are haughty
    and walk with outstretched necks,
    glancing wantonly with their eyes,
mincing along as they go,
    (BH)tinkling with their feet,
17 therefore the Lord (BI)will strike with a scab
    the heads of (BJ)the daughters of Zion,
    and the Lord will lay bare their secret parts.

18 In that day the Lord will take away (BK)the finery of the anklets, the (BL)headbands, and the (BM)crescents; 19 the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; 20 the (BN)headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; 21 the signet rings and (BO)nose rings; 22 the (BP)festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; 23 the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils.

24 Instead of (BQ)perfume there will be rottenness;
    and instead of a (BR)belt, a rope;
and instead of (BS)well-set hair, (BT)baldness;
    and instead of a rich robe, a (BU)skirt of sackcloth;
    and (BV)branding instead of beauty.
25 Your men shall fall by the sword
    and your mighty men in battle.
26 And (BW)her gates shall lament and mourn;
    empty, she shall (BX)sit on the ground.

(BY)And seven women (BZ)shall take hold of (CA)one man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes, only let us be called by your name; (CB)take away our reproach.”

The Branch of the Lord Glorified

In that day (CC)the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and (CD)the fruit of the land shall be the pride and honor of the survivors of Israel. (CE)And he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called (CF)holy, everyone who has (CG)been recorded for life in Jerusalem, when (CH)the Lord shall have washed away the filth of (CI)the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by (CJ)a spirit of burning.[i] Then the Lord will create over the whole site of Mount Zion and over her assemblies (CK)a cloud by day, and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory there will be (CL)a canopy. (CM)There will be a (CN)booth for shade by day from the heat, and (CO)for a refuge and a shelter from the storm and rain.

The Vineyard of the Lord Destroyed

Let me sing for my beloved
    my love song concerning his vineyard:
My beloved had (CP)a vineyard
    on a very fertile hill.
He dug it and cleared it of stones,
    and planted it with (CQ)choice vines;
he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
    and hewed out a wine vat in it;
and (CR)he looked for it to yield grapes,
    but it yielded wild grapes.

And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem
    and men of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.
(CS)What more was there to do for my vineyard,
    that I have not done in it?
(CT)When I looked for it to yield grapes,
    why did it yield wild grapes?

And now I will tell you
    what I will do to my vineyard.
I will remove (CU)its hedge,
    and it shall be devoured;[j]
(CV)I will break down its wall,
    and it shall be trampled down.
I will make it a waste;
    it shall not be pruned or hoed,
    and (CW)briers and thorns shall grow up;
(CX)I will also command the clouds
    that they rain no rain upon it.

(CY)For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts
    is the house of Israel,
and the men of Judah
    are his pleasant planting;
and he looked for justice,
    but behold, bloodshed;[k]
for righteousness,
    but behold, an outcry![l]

Woe to the Wicked

Woe to those who (CZ)join house to house,
    who add field to field,
until there is no more room,
    and you are made to dwell alone
    in the midst of the land.
The Lord of hosts has sworn in my hearing:
(DA)“Surely many houses shall be desolate,
    large and beautiful houses, without inhabitant.
10 (DB)For ten acres[m] of vineyard shall yield but one bath,
    and a (DC)homer of seed shall yield but an ephah.”[n]

11 Woe to those who (DD)rise early in the morning,
    that they may run after strong drink,
who tarry late into the evening
    as wine inflames them!
12 (DE)They have lyre and harp,
    tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts,
(DF)but they do not regard the deeds of the Lord,
    or see the work of his hands.

13 Therefore my people go into exile
    (DG)for lack of knowledge;[o]
their (DH)honored men go hungry,[p]
    and their multitude is parched with thirst.
14 Therefore Sheol has (DI)enlarged its appetite
    and opened (DJ)its mouth beyond measure,
and the nobility of Jerusalem[q] and her multitude will go down,
    her revelers and he who (DK)exults in her.
15 (DL)Man is humbled, and each one is brought low,
    and the eyes of the haughty[r] are brought low.
16 (DM)But the Lord of hosts is exalted[s] in justice,
    and the Holy God shows himself holy in righteousness.
17 Then shall the lambs graze (DN)as in their pasture,
    and (DO)nomads shall eat among the ruins of the rich.

18 Woe to those who draw iniquity with (DP)cords of falsehood,
    who draw sin as with cart ropes,
19 who say: (DQ)“Let him be quick,
    let him speed his work
    that we may see it;
let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near,
    and let it come, that we may know it!”
20 Woe to (DR)those who call evil good
    and good evil,
(DS)who put darkness for light
    and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
    and sweet for bitter!
21 Woe to those who are (DT)wise in their own eyes,
    and shrewd in their own sight!
22 Woe to those who are (DU)heroes at drinking wine,
    and valiant men in mixing strong drink,
23 who (DV)acquit the guilty for a bribe,
    and deprive the innocent of his right!

24 Therefore, (DW)as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so (DX)their root will be (DY)as rottenness,
    and their blossom go up like dust;
for they have (DZ)rejected the law of the Lord of hosts,
    and have (EA)despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.
25 Therefore (EB)the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people,
    and he stretched out his hand against them and struck them,
    and (EC)the mountains quaked;
and their corpses were (ED)as refuse
    in the midst of the streets.
(EE)For all this his anger has not turned away,
    and his hand is stretched out still.

26 He will (EF)raise a signal for nations far away,
    and (EG)whistle for them (EH)from the ends of the earth;
and behold, quickly, speedily they come!
27 (EI)None is weary, none stumbles,
    none slumbers or sleeps,
not a waistband is loose,
    not a sandal strap broken;
28 (EJ)their arrows are sharp,
    all their bows bent,
their horses' hoofs seem like flint,
    and their wheels (EK)like the whirlwind.
29 Their roaring is like a lion,
    like young lions they roar;
they growl and (EL)seize their prey;
    they carry it off, and none can rescue.
30 They will growl over it on that day,
    like the growling of the sea.
And if one looks to the land,
    behold, (EM)darkness and distress;
and the light is darkened by its clouds.

The Mountain of the Lord(A)

This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:(B)

In the last days(C)

the mountain(D) of the Lord’s temple will be established
    as the highest of the mountains;(E)
it will be exalted(F) above the hills,
    and all nations will stream to it.(G)

Many peoples(H) will come and say,

“Come, let us go(I) up to the mountain(J) of the Lord,
    to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
    so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law(K) will go out from Zion,
    the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.(L)
He will judge(M) between the nations
    and will settle disputes(N) for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
    and their spears into pruning hooks.(O)
Nation will not take up sword against nation,(P)
    nor will they train for war anymore.

Come, descendants of Jacob,(Q)
    let us walk in the light(R) of the Lord.

The Day of the Lord

You, Lord, have abandoned(S) your people,
    the descendants of Jacob.(T)
They are full of superstitions from the East;
    they practice divination(U) like the Philistines(V)
    and embrace(W) pagan customs.(X)
Their land is full of silver and gold;(Y)
    there is no end to their treasures.(Z)
Their land is full of horses;(AA)
    there is no end to their chariots.(AB)
Their land is full of idols;(AC)
    they bow down(AD) to the work of their hands,(AE)
    to what their fingers(AF) have made.
So people will be brought low(AG)
    and everyone humbled(AH)
    do not forgive them.[a](AI)

10 Go into the rocks, hide(AJ) in the ground
    from the fearful presence of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty!(AK)
11 The eyes of the arrogant(AL) will be humbled(AM)
    and human pride(AN) brought low;(AO)
the Lord alone will be exalted(AP) in that day.(AQ)

12 The Lord Almighty has a day(AR) in store
    for all the proud(AS) and lofty,(AT)
for all that is exalted(AU)
    (and they will be humbled),(AV)
13 for all the cedars of Lebanon,(AW) tall and lofty,(AX)
    and all the oaks of Bashan,(AY)
14 for all the towering mountains
    and all the high hills,(AZ)
15 for every lofty tower(BA)
    and every fortified wall,(BB)
16 for every trading ship[b](BC)
    and every stately vessel.
17 The arrogance of man will be brought low(BD)
    and human pride humbled;(BE)
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,(BF)
18     and the idols(BG) will totally disappear.(BH)

19 People will flee to caves(BI) in the rocks
    and to holes in the ground(BJ)
from the fearful presence(BK) of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty,(BL)
    when he rises to shake the earth.(BM)
20 In that day(BN) people will throw away
    to the moles and bats(BO)
their idols of silver and idols of gold,(BP)
    which they made to worship.(BQ)
21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks(BR)
    and to the overhanging crags
from the fearful presence of the Lord
    and the splendor of his majesty,(BS)
    when he rises(BT) to shake the earth.(BU)

22 Stop trusting in mere humans,(BV)
    who have but a breath(BW) in their nostrils.
    Why hold them in esteem?(BX)

Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah

See now, the Lord,
    the Lord Almighty,
is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah
    both supply and support:(BY)
all supplies of food(BZ) and all supplies of water,(CA)
    the hero and the warrior,(CB)
the judge and the prophet,
    the diviner(CC) and the elder,(CD)
the captain of fifty(CE) and the man of rank,(CF)
    the counselor, skilled craftsman(CG) and clever enchanter.(CH)

“I will make mere youths their officials;
    children will rule over them.”(CI)

People will oppress each other—
    man against man, neighbor against neighbor.(CJ)
The young will rise up against the old,
    the nobody against the honored.

A man will seize one of his brothers
    in his father’s house, and say,
“You have a cloak, you be our leader;
    take charge of this heap of ruins!”
But in that day(CK) he will cry out,
    “I have no remedy.(CL)
I have no food(CM) or clothing in my house;
    do not make me the leader of the people.”(CN)

Jerusalem staggers,
    Judah is falling;(CO)
their words(CP) and deeds(CQ) are against the Lord,
    defying(CR) his glorious presence.
The look on their faces testifies(CS) against them;
    they parade their sin like Sodom;(CT)
    they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
    They have brought disaster(CU) upon themselves.

10 Tell the righteous it will be well(CV) with them,
    for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.(CW)
11 Woe to the wicked!(CX)
    Disaster(CY) is upon them!
They will be paid back(CZ)
    for what their hands have done.(DA)

12 Youths(DB) oppress my people,
    women rule over them.
My people, your guides lead you astray;(DC)
    they turn you from the path.

13 The Lord takes his place in court;(DD)
    he rises to judge(DE) the people.
14 The Lord enters into judgment(DF)
    against the elders and leaders of his people:
“It is you who have ruined my vineyard;
    the plunder(DG) from the poor(DH) is in your houses.
15 What do you mean by crushing my people(DI)
    and grinding(DJ) the faces of the poor?”(DK)
declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty.(DL)

16 The Lord says,
    “The women of Zion(DM) are haughty,
walking along with outstretched necks,(DN)
    flirting with their eyes,
strutting along with swaying hips,
    with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
17 Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion;
    the Lord will make their scalps bald.(DO)

18 In that day(DP) the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,(DQ) 19 the earrings and bracelets(DR) and veils,(DS) 20 the headdresses(DT) and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, 21 the signet rings and nose rings,(DU) 22 the fine robes and the capes and cloaks,(DV) the purses 23 and mirrors, and the linen garments(DW) and tiaras(DX) and shawls.

24 Instead of fragrance(DY) there will be a stench;(DZ)
    instead of a sash,(EA) a rope;
instead of well-dressed hair, baldness;(EB)
    instead of fine clothing, sackcloth;(EC)
    instead of beauty,(ED) branding.(EE)
25 Your men will fall by the sword,(EF)
    your warriors in battle.(EG)
26 The gates(EH) of Zion will lament and mourn;(EI)
    destitute,(EJ) she will sit on the ground.(EK)

In that day(EL) seven women
    will take hold of one man(EM)
and say, “We will eat our own food(EN)
    and provide our own clothes;
only let us be called by your name.
    Take away our disgrace!”(EO)

The Branch of the Lord

In that day(EP) the Branch of the Lord(EQ) will be beautiful(ER) and glorious, and the fruit(ES) of the land will be the pride and glory(ET) of the survivors(EU) in Israel. Those who are left in Zion,(EV) who remain(EW) in Jerusalem, will be called holy,(EX) all who are recorded(EY) among the living in Jerusalem. The Lord will wash away the filth(EZ) of the women of Zion;(FA) he will cleanse(FB) the bloodstains(FC) from Jerusalem by a spirit[c] of judgment(FD) and a spirit[d] of fire.(FE) Then the Lord will create(FF) over all of Mount Zion(FG) and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night;(FH) over everything the glory[e](FI) will be a canopy.(FJ) It will be a shelter(FK) and shade from the heat of the day, and a refuge(FL) and hiding place from the storm(FM) and rain.

The Song of the Vineyard

I will sing for the one I love
    a song about his vineyard:(FN)
My loved one had a vineyard
    on a fertile hillside.
He dug it up and cleared it of stones
    and planted it with the choicest vines.(FO)
He built a watchtower(FP) in it
    and cut out a winepress(FQ) as well.
Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,
    but it yielded only bad fruit.(FR)

“Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah,
    judge between me and my vineyard.(FS)
What more could have been done for my vineyard
    than I have done for it?(FT)
When I looked for good grapes,
    why did it yield only bad?(FU)
Now I will tell you
    what I am going to do to my vineyard:
I will take away its hedge,
    and it will be destroyed;(FV)
I will break down its wall,(FW)
    and it will be trampled.(FX)
I will make it a wasteland,(FY)
    neither pruned nor cultivated,
    and briers and thorns(FZ) will grow there.
I will command the clouds
    not to rain(GA) on it.”

The vineyard(GB) of the Lord Almighty
    is the nation of Israel,
and the people of Judah
    are the vines he delighted in.
And he looked for justice,(GC) but saw bloodshed;
    for righteousness,(GD) but heard cries of distress.(GE)

Woes and Judgments

Woe(GF) to you who add house to house
    and join field to field(GG)
till no space is left
    and you live alone in the land.

The Lord Almighty(GH) has declared in my hearing:(GI)

“Surely the great houses will become desolate,(GJ)
    the fine mansions left without occupants.
10 A ten-acre vineyard will produce only a bath[f] of wine;
    a homer[g] of seed will yield only an ephah[h] of grain.”(GK)

11 Woe(GL) to those who rise early in the morning
    to run after their drinks,
who stay up late at night
    till they are inflamed with wine.(GM)
12 They have harps and lyres at their banquets,
    pipes(GN) and timbrels(GO) and wine,
but they have no regard(GP) for the deeds of the Lord,
    no respect for the work of his hands.(GQ)
13 Therefore my people will go into exile(GR)
    for lack of understanding;(GS)
those of high rank(GT) will die of hunger
    and the common people will be parched with thirst.(GU)
14 Therefore Death(GV) expands its jaws,
    opening wide its mouth;(GW)
into it will descend their nobles and masses
    with all their brawlers and revelers.(GX)
15 So people will be brought low(GY)
    and everyone humbled,(GZ)
    the eyes of the arrogant(HA) humbled.
16 But the Lord Almighty will be exalted(HB) by his justice,(HC)
    and the holy God will be proved holy(HD) by his righteous acts.
17 Then sheep will graze as in their own pasture;(HE)
    lambs will feed[i] among the ruins of the rich.

18 Woe(HF) to those who draw sin along with cords(HG) of deceit,
    and wickedness(HH) as with cart ropes,
19 to those who say, “Let God hurry;
    let him hasten(HI) his work
    so we may see it.
The plan of the Holy One(HJ) of Israel—
    let it approach, let it come into view,
    so we may know it.”(HK)

20 Woe(HL) to those who call evil good(HM)
    and good evil,(HN)
who put darkness for light
    and light for darkness,(HO)
who put bitter for sweet
    and sweet for bitter.(HP)

21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes(HQ)
    and clever in their own sight.

22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine(HR)
    and champions at mixing drinks,(HS)
23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe,(HT)
    but deny justice(HU) to the innocent.(HV)
24 Therefore, as tongues of fire(HW) lick up straw(HX)
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay(HY)
    and their flowers blow away like dust;(HZ)
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
    and spurned the word(IA) of the Holy One(IB) of Israel.
25 Therefore the Lord’s anger(IC) burns against his people;
    his hand is raised and he strikes them down.
The mountains shake,(ID)
    and the dead bodies(IE) are like refuse(IF) in the streets.(IG)

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,(IH)
    his hand is still upraised.(II)

26 He lifts up a banner(IJ) for the distant nations,
    he whistles(IK) for those at the ends of the earth.(IL)
Here they come,
    swiftly and speedily!
27 Not one of them grows tired(IM) or stumbles,
    not one slumbers or sleeps;
not a belt(IN) is loosened at the waist,(IO)
    not a sandal strap is broken.(IP)
28 Their arrows are sharp,(IQ)
    all their bows(IR) are strung;
their horses’ hooves(IS) seem like flint,
    their chariot wheels like a whirlwind.(IT)
29 Their roar is like that of the lion,(IU)
    they roar like young lions;
they growl as they seize(IV) their prey
    and carry it off with no one to rescue.(IW)
30 In that day(IX) they will roar over it
    like the roaring of the sea.(IY)
And if one looks at the land,
    there is only darkness(IZ) and distress;(JA)
    even the sun will be darkened(JB) by clouds.
