A (A)sound of tumult on the mountains,
Like that of many people!
A sound of the rumbling of kingdoms,
Of nations gathered together!
Yahweh of hosts is mustering the host for battle.
They are coming from a far country,
From the (B)end of the sky,
Yahweh and His instruments of (C)indignation,
To (D)wreak destruction on the whole land.

17 Behold, I am going to (A)awaken the Medes against them,
Who will not think about silver or (B)take pleasure in gold.
18 And their bows will dash the (C)young men to pieces,
They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb,
Nor will their (D)eye pity [a]children.
19 And it will be that (E)Babylon, the (F)beauty of kingdoms, the [b]honor of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God (G)overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

“And do according to all that I have commanded you.
22 The (B)noise of battle is in the land,
And great destruction.
23 How the (C)hammer of the whole earth
Has been cut in pieces and broken!
How Babylon has become
An object of horror among the nations!
24 I (D)set a snare for you, and you were also (E)caught, O Babylon,
But you yourself did not know;
You have been found and also seized
Because you have engaged in (F)conflict with Yahweh.”
25 Yahweh has opened His armory
And has brought forth the (G)weapons of His indignation,
For it is a (H)work of Lord Yahweh of hosts
In the land of the Chaldeans.
26 Come to her from the [d]farthest border;
(I)Open up her barns;
Pile her up like heaps,
And [e](J)devote her to destruction;
Let nothing of her remain.
27 (K)Put all her young bulls to the sword;
Let them (L)go down to the slaughter!
Woe be upon them, for their (M)day has come,
The time of their punishment.

28 There is a (N)sound of those who flee and escape from the land of Babylon,
To declare in Zion the (O)vengeance of Yahweh our God,
Vengeance for His (P)temple.

29 “Summon [f]many against Babylon,
All those who [g]bend the bow:
Encamp against her on every side,
Let there be no escape[h].
Repay her according to her work;
(Q)According to all that she has done, so do to her;
For she has become (R)arrogant against Yahweh,
Against the Holy One of Israel.
