God’s Case Against Israel

²Heaven and earth, listen! This is what the Lord says:

“I raised my children and helped them grow up,
    but they have turned against me.
³A bull knows its master,
    and a donkey knows where its owner feeds it.
But Israel does not know me.
    My people do not understand.”

⁴Oh, what a sinful nation! Their guilt is like a heavy weight that they must carry. They are evil, destructive children.^[a] They left the Lord and insulted the Holy One of Israel. They turned away and treated him like a stranger.

²Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth!^(A)
    For the Lord has spoken:^(B)
“I reared children^(C) and brought them up,
    but they have rebelled^(D) against me.
³The ox knows^(E) its master,
    the donkey its owner’s manger,^(F)
but Israel does not know,^(G)
    my people do not understand.^(H)”

⁴Woe to the sinful nation,
    a people whose guilt is great,^(I)
a brood of evildoers,^(J)
    children given to corruption!^(K)
They have forsaken^(L) the Lord;
    they have spurned the Holy One^(M) of Israel
    and turned their backs^(N) on him.
