Do not tremble, do not be afraid.
Did I not proclaim(A) this and foretell it long ago?
You are my witnesses. Is there any God(B) besides me?
No, there is no other Rock;(C) I know not one.”

13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(A) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(B) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(C) with great possessions.(D) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(E) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(F) 16 In the fourth generation(G) your descendants will come back here,(H) for the sin of the Amorites(I) has not yet reached its full measure.”

23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship(A)—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

24 “The God who made the world and everything in it(B) is the Lord of heaven and earth(C) and does not live in temples built by human hands.(D) 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.(E) 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.(F) 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.(G) 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’[a](H) As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’[b]

29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.(I) 30 In the past God overlooked(J) such ignorance,(K) but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.(L) 31 For he has set a day when he will judge(M) the world with justice(N) by the man he has appointed.(O) He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”(P)

23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(A) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives(B) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(C) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(D) and all your ways.(E) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(A) replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver(B) us from it, and he will deliver(C) us[a] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.(D)

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven(E) times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(F) and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,(G) 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”

They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”

25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,(H) come out! Come here!”

So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers(I) crowded around them.(J) They saw that the fire(K) had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel(L) and rescued(M) his servants! They trusted(N) in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(O)
