²⁴ “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For ^(A)their worm shall not die, ^(B)their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

The Great Day of the Lord

4 ^[a] “For behold, ^(A)the day is coming, ^(B)burning like an oven, when ^(C)all the arrogant and ^(D)all evildoers ^(E)will be stubble. The day that is coming ^(F)shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.

¹⁰ and the devil ^(A)who had deceived them was ^(B)thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where ^(C)the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

²⁰ And the beast was captured, and with it ^(A)the false prophet ^(B)who in its presence^[a] had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who ^(C)worshiped its image. These two were ^(D)thrown alive into the lake of ^(E)fire that burns with sulfur.

¹⁰ he also will drink ^(A)the wine of God's wrath, ^(B)poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and ^(C)he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. ¹¹ And ^(D)the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and ^(E)they have no rest, day or night, these ^(F)worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.”

^14 (A)The sky vanished ^(B)like a scroll that is being rolled up, and ^(C)every mountain and island was removed from its place. ¹⁵ Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave^[a] and free, ^(D)hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, ^16 (E)calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of ^(F)him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, ¹⁷ for ^(G)the great day of their wrath has come, and ^(H)who can stand?”

^43 (A)And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to ^(B)hell,^[a] to ^(C)the unquenchable fire.^{[b] 45 (D)}And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into ^(E)hell. ^47 (F)And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into ^(G)hell, ⁴⁸ ‘where ^(H)their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ ⁴⁹ For everyone will be salted with fire.^[c]

¹⁰ Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. ^(A)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
