16 Surely you are still our Father!
    Even if Abraham and Jacob[a] would disown us,
Lord, you would still be our Father.
    You are our Redeemer from ages past.
17 Lord, why have you allowed us to turn from your path?
    Why have you given us stubborn hearts so we no longer fear you?
Return and help us, for we are your servants,
    the tribes that are your special possession.

    though Abraham does not know us
    or Israel acknowledge(B) us;
you, Lord, are our Father,
    our Redeemer(C) from of old is your name.
17 Why, Lord, do you make us wander(D) from your ways
    and harden our hearts(E) so we do not revere(F) you?
Return(G) for the sake of your servants,
    the tribes that are your inheritance.(H)

  1. Isaiah 63:19 Or We are like those you have never ruled, / like those never called

[a]As fire causes wood to burn
    and water to boil,
your coming would make the nations tremble.
    Then your enemies would learn the reason for your fame!
When you came down long ago,
    you did awesome deeds beyond our highest expectations.
    And oh, how the mountains quaked!
For since the world began,
    no ear has heard
and no eye has seen a God like you,
    who works for those who wait for him!
You welcome those who gladly do good,
    who follow godly ways.
But you have been very angry with us,
    for we are not godly.
We are constant sinners;
    how can people like us be saved?
We are all infected and impure with sin.
    When we display our righteous deeds,
    they are nothing but filthy rags.
Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall,
    and our sins sweep us away like the wind.
Yet no one calls on your name
    or pleads with you for mercy.
Therefore, you have turned away from us
    and turned us over[b] to our sins.

  1. 64:2 Verses 64:2-12 are numbered 64:1-11 in Hebrew text.
  2. 64:7 As in Greek, Syriac, and Aramaic versions; Hebrew reads melted us.

As when fire sets twigs ablaze
    and causes water to boil,
come down to make your name(A) known to your enemies
    and cause the nations to quake(B) before you!
For when you did awesome(C) things that we did not expect,
    you came down, and the mountains trembled(D) before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard,
    no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,(E)
    who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.(F)
You come to the help of those who gladly do right,(G)
    who remember your ways.
But when we continued to sin against them,
    you were angry.(H)
    How then can we be saved?
All of us have become like one who is unclean,(I)
    and all our righteous(J) acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,(K)
    and like the wind our sins sweep us away.(L)
No one(M) calls on your name(N)
    or strives to lay hold of you;
for you have hidden(O) your face from us
    and have given us over(P) to[a] our sins.
