Ephraim’s Captivity Predicted

28 Woe to the proud crown of the (A)habitually drunk of (B)Ephraim,
And to the fading flower of its glorious beauty,
Which is at the head of the [a]fertile valley
Of those who are [b]overcome with wine!
Behold, the Lord has a strong and (C)mighty agent;
As a storm of (D)hail, a tempest of destruction,
Like a storm of (E)mighty overflowing waters,
He has thrown it down to the earth with His hand.
The splendid crown of the habitually drunk of Ephraim is (F)trampled underfoot.
And the fading flower of its glorious beauty,
Which is at the head of the [c]fertile valley,
Will be like the (G)first-ripe fig prior to the summer,
Which [d]one sees,
And [e]as soon as it is in his [f]hand,
He swallows it.
On that day the (H)Lord of armies will become a beautiful (I)crown
And a glorious wreath to the remnant of His people;
A (J)spirit of justice for him who sits in judgment,
A (K)strength to those who repel the [g]onslaught at the gate.
And these also (L)reel with wine and stagger from intoxicating drink:
(M)The priest and (N)the prophet reel with intoxicating drink,
They are confused by wine, they stagger from (O)intoxicating drink;
They reel while [h]having (P)visions,
They stagger when rendering a verdict.
For all the tables are full of filthy (Q)vomit, without a single clean place.

“To (R)whom would He teach knowledge,
And to whom would He interpret the message?
Those just (S)weaned from milk?
Those just taken from the breast?
10 For He says,
[i](T)Order on order, order on order,
Line on line, line on line,
A little here, a little there.’”
11 Indeed, He will speak to this people
Through (U)stammering lips and a foreign tongue,
12 He who said to them, “This is the (V)place of quiet, give rest to the weary,”
And, “This is the resting place,” but they would not listen.
13 So the word of the Lord to them will be,
[j]Order on order, order on order,
Line on line, line on line,
A little here, a little there,”
That they may go and (W)stumble backward, be broken, snared, and taken captive.

Judah Is Warned

14 Therefore, (X)hear the word of the Lord, you (Y)scoffers,
Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem,
15 Because you have said, “We have made a (Z)covenant with death,
And with [k]Sheol we have made a [l]pact.
(AA)The [m]gushing flood will not reach us when it passes by,
Because we have made (AB)falsehood our refuge and we have (AC)concealed ourselves with deception.”

16 Therefore this is what the Lord [n]God says:

(AD)Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a tested (AE)stone,
A precious cornerstone for the foundation, [o]firmly placed.
The one who believes in it will not be [p]disturbed.
17 I will make (AF)justice the measuring line
And righteousness the level;
Then (AG)hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
And the waters will overflow the secret place.
18 Your (AH)covenant with death will be [q](AI)canceled,
And your pact with Sheol will not stand;
When the (AJ)[r]gushing flood passes through,
Then you will become its (AK)trampling ground.
19 As (AL)often as it passes through, it will [s]seize you;
For (AM)morning after morning it will pass through, anytime during the day or night,
And it will be [t]sheer (AN)terror to understand [u]what it means.”
20 The bed is too short on which to stretch out,
And the (AO)blanket is too [v]small to wrap oneself in.
21 For the Lord will rise up as at Mount (AP)Perazim,
He will be stirred up as in the Valley of (AQ)Gibeon,
To do His (AR)task, His [w](AS)unusual task,
And to work His work, His [x]extraordinary work.
22 And now do not carry on as (AT)scoffers,
Or your shackles will be made stronger;
For I have heard from the Lord [y]God of armies
Of decisive (AU)destruction on all the earth.

23 Listen and hear my voice,
Pay attention and hear my words.
24 Does the [z]farmer plow [aa]continually to plant seed?
Does he continually [ab]turn and break up his ground?
25 Does he not level its surface
And sow dill and scatter (AV)cumin
And [ac]plant (AW)wheat in rows,
Barley in its place and rye within its [ad]area?
26 For his God instructs and teaches him properly.
27 For dill is not threshed with a (AX)threshing sledge,
Nor is the cartwheel [ae]driven over cumin;
But dill is beaten out with a rod, and cumin with a club.
28 Grain for bread is crushed,
Indeed, he does not continue to thresh it forever.
Because the wheel of his cart and his horses eventually [af]damage it,
He does not thresh it longer.
29 This also comes from the Lord of armies,
Who has made His counsel (AY)wonderful and His wisdom (AZ)great.

Jerusalem Is Warned

29 Woe, [ag]Ariel, [ah]Ariel the city where David once (BA)camped!
Add year to year, [ai](BB)keep your feasts on schedule.
I will bring distress to Ariel,
And she will be a city of grieving and (BC)mourning;
And she will be like an [aj]Ariel to me.
I will (BD)camp against you [ak]encircling you,
And I will set up siegeworks against you,
And I will raise up battle towers against you.
Then you will (BE)be brought low;
From the earth you will speak,
And from the dust where you are prostrate
Your words will come.
Your voice will also be like that of a [al]spirit from the ground,
And your speech will whisper from the dust.

But the multitude of your [am]enemies will become like fine (BF)dust,
And the multitude of the (BG)ruthless ones like the chaff which [an]blows away;
And it will happen (BH)instantly, suddenly.
From the Lord of armies you will be (BI)punished with (BJ)thunder and earthquake and loud noise,
With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.
And the (BK)multitude of all the nations who wage war against [ao]Ariel,
Even all who wage war against her and her stronghold, and who distress her,
Will be like a dream, a (BL)vision of the night.
It will be as when a hungry person dreams—
And behold, he is eating;
But when he awakens, his [ap]hunger is not satisfied,
Or as when a thirsty person dreams—
And behold, he is drinking,
But when he awakens, behold, he is faint
And his [aq]thirst is not quenched.
(BM)So will the multitude of all the nations be
Who wage war against Mount Zion.

(BN)Be delayed and horrified,
Blind yourselves and be blind;
They (BO)become drunk, but not with wine,
They stagger, but not with intoxicating drink.
10 For the Lord has poured over you a spirit of deep (BP)sleep,
He has (BQ)shut your eyes—the prophets;
And He has covered your heads—the seers.

11 The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed [ar](BR)book, which, when they give it to the one who [as]is literate, saying, “Please read this,” he will say, “I cannot, because it is sealed.” 12 Then the [at]book will be given to the one who [au]is illiterate, saying, “Please read this.” And he will say, “I [av]cannot read.”

13 Then the Lord said,

“Because (BS)this people approaches Me with their [aw]words
And honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me,
And their [ax]reverence for Me [ay]consists of the commandment of men that is taught;
14 Therefore behold, I will once again deal (BT)marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous;
And (BU)the wisdom of their wise men will perish,
And the understanding of their men who have understanding will be concealed.”

15 Woe to those who deeply (BV)hide their [az]plans from the Lord,
And whose (BW)deeds are done in a dark place,
And they say, “(BX)Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?”
16 You turn things around!
Shall the potter be considered [ba]as equal with the clay,
That (BY)what is made would say to its maker, “He did not make me”;
Or what is formed say to him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?

Blessing after Discipline

17 Is it not yet just a little while
[bb]Before Lebanon will be turned into a (BZ)fertile field,
And the fertile field will be considered as a forest?
18 On that day those who are (CA)deaf will hear (CB)words of a book,
And out of their gloom and darkness the (CC)eyes of those who are blind will see.
19 The (CD)afflicted also will increase their joy in the Lord,
And the (CE)needy of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the (CF)ruthless will come to an end and the (CG)scorner will be finished,
Indeed (CH)all who [bc]are intent on doing evil will be eliminated,
21 Who [bd]cause a person to be indicted by a word,
And (CI)set a trap for the arbitrator at the gate,
And [be](CJ)defraud the one in the right with [bf]meaningless arguments.

22 Therefore this is what the Lord, who redeemed (CK)Abraham, says concerning the house of Jacob:

“Jacob (CL)will not be ashamed now, nor will his face turn pale now;
23 But when [bg]he sees his (CM)children, the (CN)work of My hands, in his midst,
They will sanctify My name;
Indeed, they will (CO)sanctify the Holy One of Jacob,
And will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
24 Those who (CP)err in [bh]mind will (CQ)know [bi]the truth,
And those who [bj]criticize will [bk](CR)accept instruction.

Judah Warned against Egyptian Alliance

30 “Woe to the (CS)rebellious children,” declares the Lord,
“Who (CT)execute a plan, but not Mine,
And [bl](CU)make an alliance, but not of My Spirit,
In order to add sin to sin;
Who (CV)proceed down to Egypt
Without (CW)consulting [bm]Me,
(CX)To take refuge in the safety of Pharaoh,
And to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!
Therefore the safety of Pharaoh will be (CY)your shame,
And the shelter in the shadow of Egypt, your humiliation.
For (CZ)their officials are at Zoan
And their ambassadors arrive at Hanes.
Everyone will be (DA)ashamed because of a people who do not benefit them,
Who are (DB)not a help or benefit, but a source of shame and also disgrace.”

The pronouncement concerning the (DC)animals of the (DD)Negev:

Through a land of (DE)distress and anguish,
From [bn]where come lioness and lion, viper and (DF)flying serpent,
They (DG)carry their riches on the [bo]backs of young donkeys,
And their treasures on (DH)camels’ humps,
To a people who will not benefit them;
Even Egypt, whose (DI)help is vain and empty.
Therefore, I have called [bp]her
[bq](DJ)Rahab who has been exterminated.”
Now go, (DK)write it on a tablet in their presence
And inscribe it on a scroll,
That it may [br]serve in the time to come
[bs]As a witness forever.
For this is a (DL)rebellious people, (DM)false sons,
Sons who [bt]refuse to (DN)listen
To the [bu]instruction of the Lord;
10 Who say to the (DO)seers, “You must not see visions”;
And to the prophets, “You must not (DP)prophesy the truth to us.
(DQ)Speak to us [bv]pleasant words,
Prophesy illusions.
11 Get out of the way, (DR)turn aside from the path,
(DS)Stop speaking before us about the Holy One of Israel!”

12 Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says:

(DT)Since you have rejected this word
And have put your trust in (DU)oppression and crookedness, and have relied on them,
13 Therefore this (DV)wrongdoing will be to you
Like a (DW)breach about to fall,
A bulge in a high wall,
Whose collapse comes (DX)suddenly in an instant,
14 Whose collapse is like the smashing of a (DY)potter’s jar,
[bw]So ruthlessly shattered
That a shard will not be found among its pieces
To [bx]take fire from a hearth
Or to scoop water from a cistern.”

15 For this is what the Lord [by]God, the Holy One of Israel, has said:

“In [bz]repentance and (DZ)rest you will be saved,
In (EA)quietness and trust is your strength.”
But you were not willing,
16 And you said, “No, for we will flee on (EB)horses!”
Therefore you shall flee!
“And we will ride on swift horses!”
Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift.
17 (EC)One thousand will flee at the threat of one man;
You will flee at the threat of five,
Until you are left like a signal post on a mountain top,
And like a flag on a hill.

God Is Gracious and Just

18 Therefore the Lord [ca](ED)longs to be gracious to you,
And therefore He [cb]waits on (EE)high to have compassion on you.
For the Lord is a (EF)God of justice;
How blessed are all those who [cc](EG)long for Him.

19 [cd]For, you people in Zion, (EH)inhabitant in Jerusalem, you will (EI)weep no longer. He will certainly be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will (EJ)answer you. 20 Although the Lord has given you (EK)bread of deprivation and water of oppression, He, your Teacher, will no longer (EL)hide Himself, but your eyes will see your Teacher. 21 Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the (EM)way, walk in it,” whenever you (EN)turn to the right or to the left. 22 And you will desecrate your carved (EO)images plated with silver, and your cast metal (EP)images plated with gold. You will scatter them as a filthy thing, and say to [ce]them, “(EQ)Be gone!”

23 Then He will (ER)give you rain for your seed which you will sow in the ground, and bread from the yield of the ground, and it will be [cf]rich and [cg]plentiful; on that day (ES)your livestock will graze in a wide pasture. 24 Also the oxen and the donkeys that work the ground will eat [ch]seasoned feed, which [ci]has been (ET)winnowed with shovel and pitchfork. 25 And on every lofty mountain and (EU)every high hill there will be [cj]streams running with water on the day of the great (EV)slaughter, when the towers fall. 26 (EW)And the light of the full moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, on the day (EX)the Lord binds up the (EY)fracture of His people and (EZ)heals the wound [ck]He has inflicted.

27 Behold, (FA)the name of the Lord comes from a [cl]remote place;
(FB)His anger is burning and [cm]dense with [cn]smoke;
His lips are filled with (FC)indignation,
And His tongue is like a (FD)consuming fire;
28 His (FE)breath is like an overflowing river,
Which (FF)reaches to the neck,
To (FG)shake the nations back and forth in a [co]sieve,
And to put in the jaws of the peoples (FH)the bridle which leads astray.
29 You will have [cp]songs as in the night when you keep the festival,
And gladness of heart as when one marches to the sound of the flute,
To go to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.
30 And the Lord will cause [cq]His voice of authority to be heard,
And the [cr]descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger,
And in the flame of a consuming fire
In cloudburst, downpour, and hailstones.
31 For (FI)at the voice of the Lord (FJ)Assyria will be terrified,
When He strikes with the (FK)rod.
32 And every [cs]blow of the [ct](FL)rod of punishment,
Which the Lord will lay on him,
Will be with the music of (FM)tambourines and lyres;
And in battles, (FN)brandishing weapons, He will fight them.
33 For [cu](FO)Topheth has long been ready,
Indeed, it has been prepared for the king.
He has made it deep and large,
[cv]A pyre of fire with plenty of wood;
The (FP)breath of the Lord, like a torrent of (FQ)brimstone, sets it afire.

Help Not in Egypt but in God

31 Woe to those who go down to (FR)Egypt for help
And (FS)rely on horses,
And trust in chariots because they are many
And in horsemen because they are very strong,
But they do not (FT)look to the (FU)Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!
Yet He also is (FV)wise and will (FW)bring disaster,
And does (FX)not retract His words,
But will arise against the house of (FY)evildoers,
And against the help of the (FZ)workers of injustice.
Now the Egyptians are (GA)human and not God,
And their (GB)horses are flesh and not spirit;
So the Lord will (GC)stretch out His hand,
And any (GD)helper will stumble,
And one who is helped will fall.
And all of them will come to an end together.

For this is what the Lord says to me:
“As the (GE)lion or the young lion growls over his prey,
Against which a band of shepherds is called out,
And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise,
So will the Lord of armies come down to wage (GF)war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”
Like [cw]flying (GG)birds so the Lord of armies will protect Jerusalem.
He will (GH)protect and save it;
He will pass over and rescue it.

(GI)Return to Him against whom [cx]you have been (GJ)profoundly obstinate, you sons of Israel. For on that day every person will (GK)reject his silver idols and his gold idols, which your hands have made for you as (GL)a sin.

And the (GM)Assyrian will fall by a sword not wielded by a man,
And a (GN)sword not of man will devour him.
So he will [cy](GO)not escape the sword,
And his young men will become (GP)forced laborers.
“His (GQ)rock will pass away because of panic,
And his officers will be terrified by the (GR)flag,”
Declares the Lord, whose (GS)fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

The Glorious Future

32 Behold, a (GT)king will reign righteously,
And officials will rule justly.
Each will be like a (GU)refuge from the wind
And a shelter from the storm,
Like [cz](GV)streams of water in a dry country,
Like the (GW)shade of a [da]huge rock in an exhausted land.
Then (GX)the eyes of those who see will not be [db]blinded,
And the ears of those who hear will listen.
The [dc]mind of the (GY)rash will discern the [dd]truth,
And the tongue of the stammerers will hurry to speak clearly.
No longer will the (GZ)fool be called noble,
Or the rogue be spoken of as generous.
For a fool speaks nonsense,
And his heart [de](HA)inclines toward wickedness:
To practice (HB)ungodliness and to speak error against the Lord,
To [df](HC)keep the hungry person unsatisfied
And [dg]to withhold drink from the thirsty.
As for a rogue, his weapons are evil;
He (HD)devises wicked schemes
To (HE)destroy the poor with [dh]slander,
(HF)Even though the needy one speaks [di]what is right.
But (HG)the noble person devises noble plans;
And by noble plans he stands.

Rise up, you (HH)women who are at ease,
And hear my voice;
(HI)Listen to my word,
You complacent daughters.
10 Within a year and a few days
You will be troubled, you complacent daughters;
(HJ)For the vintage is ended,
And the fruit gathering will not come.
11 Tremble, you women who are at ease;
(HK)Be troubled, you complacent daughters;
(HL)Strip, undress, and put sackcloth on your waist,
12 (HM)Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine,
13 (HN)For the land of my people in which thorns and briars will come up;
Indeed, for all the joyful houses and for the (HO)jubilant city.
14 For (HP)the palace has been neglected, the [dj]populated (HQ)city abandoned.
[dk]Hill and watch-tower have become (HR)caves forever,
A delight for (HS)wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks,
15 Until the (HT)Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,
And the wilderness becomes a (HU)fertile field,
And the fertile field is considered as a forest.
16 Then (HV)justice will dwell in the wilderness,
And righteousness will remain in the fertile field.
17 And the (HW)work of righteousness will be peace,
And the service of righteousness, (HX)quietness and [dl]confidence forever.
18 Then my people will live in a (HY)peaceful settlement,
In secure dwellings, and in undisturbed (HZ)resting places;
19 And it will (IA)hail when the (IB)forest comes down,
And (IC)the city will be utterly laid low.
20 How (ID)blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters,
Who [dm]let the ox and the donkey out freely.

The Judgment of God

33 Woe (IE)to you, destroyer,
While you were not destroyed;
And he (IF)who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him.
As soon as you finish destroying, (IG)you will be destroyed;
As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will (IH)deal treacherously with you.
Lord, (II)be gracious to us; we have (IJ)waited for You.
Be [dn]their [do](IK)strength every morning,
Our salvation also in the (IL)time of distress.
At the sound of a roar, (IM)peoples flee;
At the (IN)lifting up of Yourself, nations disperse.
Your plunder is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
Like an infestation of locusts, people storm it.
The Lord is (IO)exalted, for He dwells on high;
He has (IP)filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
And He will be the [dp](IQ)stability of your times,
A (IR)wealth of salvation, wisdom, and (IS)knowledge;
The (IT)fear of the Lord is his treasure.
Behold, their brave men cry out [dq]in the streets,
The [dr](IU)ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.
The highways are desolate, [ds]the (IV)traveler has ceased,
He has (IW)broken the covenant, he has despised the cities,
He has no regard for mankind.
(IX)The land mourns and wastes away,
(IY)Lebanon is shamed and withers;
(IZ)Sharon is like a desert plain,
And Bashan and Carmel [dt]lose their foliage.
10 “Now (JA)I will arise,” says the Lord,
“Now I will be exalted, now I will be lifted up.
11 You have (JB)conceived [du]chaff, you will give birth to stubble;
[dv]My (JC)breath will consume you like a fire.
12 The peoples will be burned to lime,
(JD)Like cut thorns which are burned in the fire.

13 “You who are far away, (JE)hear what I have done;
And you who are near, [dw]acknowledge My might.”
14 (JF)Sinners in Zion are terrified;
(JG)Trembling has seized the godless.
“Who among us can live with (JH)the consuming fire?
Who among us can live with everlasting (JI)burning?”
15 One who (JJ)walks righteously and speaks with integrity,
One who rejects [dx]unjust gain
And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe;
One who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed
And (JK)shuts his eyes from looking at evil;
16 He will dwell on the heights,
(JL)His refuge will be the [dy]impregnable rock;
(JM)His bread will be given him,
His water will be sure.

17 Your eyes will see (JN)the King in His beauty;
They will see (JO)a distant land.
18 Your heart will meditate on (JP)terror:
“Where is (JQ)one who counts?
Where is one who weighs?
Where is one who counts the towers?”
19 You will no longer see a fierce people,
A people of [dz](JR)unintelligible speech [ea]which no one comprehends,
Of a stammering tongue [eb]which no one understands.
20 (JS)Look at Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;
Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an (JT)undisturbed settlement,
(JU)A tent which will not be folded;
Its stakes will never be pulled up,
Nor any of its ropes be torn apart.
21 But there the majestic One, the Lord, will be for us
A place of (JV)rivers and wide canals
On which no boat with oars will go,
And on which no mighty ship will pass—
22 For the Lord is our (JW)judge,
The Lord is (JX)our lawgiver,
The Lord is (JY)our king;
(JZ)He will save us—
23 Your ship’s tackle hangs slack;
It cannot hold the base of its mast firmly,
Nor spread out the sail.
Then the (KA)prey of an abundant spoil will be divided;
(KB)Those who limp will take the plunder.
24 And no resident will say, “I am (KC)sick”;
The people who live [ec]there will be (KD)forgiven their wrongdoing.

God’s Wrath against Nations

34 Come near, (KE)you nations, to hear; and listen, you peoples!
(KF)Let the earth and [ed]all it contains hear, and the world and all that springs from it.
For the Lords (KG)anger is against all the nations,
And His wrath against all their armies.
He has [ee](KH)utterly destroyed them,
He has turned them over to (KI)slaughter.
So their slain will be (KJ)thrown out,
And their corpses [ef]will give off their (KK)stench,
And the mountains will [eg]be drenched with their (KL)blood.
And (KM)all the heavenly [eh]lights will [ei]wear away,
And the (KN)sky will be rolled up like a scroll;
All its [ej]lights will also wither away
As a leaf withers from the vine,
Or as one withers from the fig tree.
For (KO)My sword has drunk its fill in heaven;
Behold it shall descend for judgment upon (KP)Edom,
And upon the people whom I have (KQ)designated for destruction.
The sword of the Lord is filled with blood,
It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in (KR)Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of (KS)Edom.
(KT)Wild oxen will also [ek]fall with them
And (KU)young bulls with strong ones;
So their land will be (KV)soaked with blood,
And their dust [el]become greasy with fat.
For the Lord has a day of (KW)vengeance,
A year of retribution for the [em]cause of Zion.
[en]Its streams will be turned into pitch,
And its loose earth into (KX)brimstone,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10 It will (KY)not be extinguished night or day;
Its (KZ)smoke will go up forever.
From (LA)generation to generation it will be desolate;
(LB)None will pass through it forever and ever.
11 But [eo](LC)pelican and hedgehog will possess it,
And [ep]owl and raven will dwell in it;
And He will stretch over it the (LD)line of [eq]desolation
And the [er]plumb line of emptiness.
12 Its nobles—there is (LE)no one there
Whom they may proclaim king—
And all its officials will be (LF)nothing.
13 Thorns will come up in its (LG)fortified towers,
Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities;
It will also be a haunt of (LH)jackals
And a habitat of ostriches.
14 The desert (LI)creatures will meet with the [es]wolves,
The [et](LJ)goat also will cry to its kind.
Yes, the [eu]night-bird will settle there
And will find herself a resting place.
15 The tree snake will make its nest and lay eggs there,
And it will hatch and gather them under its [ev]protection.
Yes, (LK)the [ew]hawks will be gathered there,
Every one with its kind.

16 Seek from the (LL)book of the Lord, and read:

Not one of these will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For [ex](LM)His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the (LN)lot for them,
And His hand has divided it to them by the (LO)measuring line.
They shall possess it forever;
From (LP)generation to generation they will dwell in it.

Zion’s Happy Future

35 The (LQ)wilderness and the desert will rejoice,
And the [ey](LR)desert will shout for joy and blossom;
Like the crocus
It will (LS)blossom profusely
And (LT)rejoice with joy and jubilation.
The (LU)glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
The majesty of (LV)Carmel and Sharon.
They will see the (LW)glory of the Lord,
The majesty of our God.
(LX)Strengthen the [ez]exhausted, and make the [fa]feeble strong.
Say to those with (LY)anxious heart,
“Take courage, fear not.
Behold, your God will come with (LZ)vengeance;
The (MA)retribution of God will come,
But He will (MB)save you.”
Then the (MC)eyes of those who are blind will be opened,
And the ears of those who are deaf will be unstopped.
Then those who (MD)limp will leap like a deer,
And the (ME)tongue of those who cannot speak will shout for joy.
For waters will burst forth in the (MF)wilderness,
And streams in the [fb]desert.
The [fc]scorched land will become a pool
And the thirsty ground (MG)springs of water;
In the (MH)haunt of jackals, its resting place,
Grass becomes reeds and rushes.
(MI)A highway will be there, (MJ)a roadway,
And it will be called the Highway of (MK)Holiness.
The unclean will not travel on it,
But it will be for the one who walks that way,
And (ML)fools will not wander on it.
No (MM)lion will be there,
Nor will any vicious animal go up on it;
[fd]They will not be found there.
But (MN)the redeemed will walk there,
10 And (MO)the redeemed of the Lord will return
And come to Zion with joyful shouting,
And everlasting joy will be on their heads.
They will obtain gladness and joy,
And (MP)sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Sennacherib Invades Judah

36 (MQ)Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, (MR)Sennacherib king of Assyria marched against all the fortified cities of Judah and seized them. And the (MS)king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a large army. And he stood by the (MT)conduit of the upper pool on the road to the [fe]fuller’s field. Then (MU)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and (MV)Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the secretary, went out to him.

And (MW)Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘This is what the great king, the king of Assyria says: “What is this confidence that you have? I say, ‘Your plan and strength for the war are only [ff]empty words.’ Now on whom have you relied, that (MX)you have revolted against me? Behold, you have relied on the (MY)staff of this broken reed, on Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his [fg]hand and pierce it. (MZ)So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him. But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God,’ is it not He (NA)whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’? Now then, come make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to put riders on them! How then can you [fh]drive back even one [fi]official of the least of my master’s servants and [fj](NB)rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 10 And have I now come up [fk]without the Lords approval against this land to destroy it? (NC)The Lord said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”’”

11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in (ND)Aramaic, for we [fl]understand it; and do not speak to us in [fm](NE)Judean [fn]so that the people who are on the wall hear you.” 12 But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, doomed to eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”

13 Then Rabshakeh stood and (NF)called out with a loud voice in Judean and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14 This is what the king says: ‘Do not let Hezekiah (NG)deceive you, for he will not be able to save you; 15 and do not let Hezekiah lead you to (NH)rely on the Lord, saying, “The Lord will certainly save us. This city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria!” 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah,’ for this is what the king of Assyria says: ‘[fo]Surrender to me and come out to me, and eat, each one, of his (NI)vine and each of his fig tree, and each drink of the (NJ)waters of his own cistern, 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Beware that Hezekiah does not mislead you, saying, “(NK)The Lord will save us.” Has any one of the gods of the nations saved his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of (NL)Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of (NM)Sepharvaim? And when have they (NN)saved Samaria from my hand? 20 Who among all the (NO)gods of these lands have saved their land from my hand, that the (NP)Lord would save Jerusalem from my hand?’”

21 But they were silent and did not (NQ)answer him so much as a word; for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.” 22 Then (NR)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and (NS)Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the secretary, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and reported to him the words of Rabshakeh.

Hezekiah Seeks Isaiah’s Help

37 Now (NT)when King Hezekiah heard the report, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and entered the house of the Lord. Then he sent (NU)Eliakim, who was in charge of the household, with (NV)Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to (NW)Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. And they said to him, “This is what Hezekiah says: ‘This day is a (NX)day of distress, rebuke, and humiliation; for (NY)children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to [fp]deliver them. Perhaps the Lord your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to (NZ)taunt the living God, and will avenge the words which the Lord your God has heard. Therefore, offer a prayer for (OA)the remnant that is left.’”

So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah. And Isaiah said to them, “This is what you shall say to your master: ‘This is what the Lord says: “(OB)Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me. Behold, I am going to put a spirit in him so that he will (OC)hear news and (OD)return to his own land. And I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.”’”

Then Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against (OE)Libnah, for he had heard that [fq]the king had left (OF)Lachish. Now he (OG)heard them say regarding Tirhakah king of [fr](OH)Cush, “He has come out to fight against you,” and when he heard it he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 “This is what you shall say to Hezekiah king of [fs]Judah: ‘(OI)Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by saying, “Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.” 11 (OJ)Behold, you yourself have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, destroying them completely. So will you be saved? 12 Did the gods of the nations which my fathers destroyed save them: (OK)Gozan, (OL)Haran, Rezeph, and the sons of Eden who were in Telassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, and of Hena and Ivvah?’”

Hezekiah’s Prayer in the Temple

14 Then Hezekiah took the [ft]letter from the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went up to the house of the Lord and [fu]spread it out before the Lord. 15 Hezekiah prayed to the Lord, saying, 16 Lord of armies, God of Israel, (OM)who is enthroned above the cherubim, You are the (ON)God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. (OO)You made heaven and earth. 17 (OP)Incline Your ear, Lord, and hear; open Your eyes, Lord, and see; and (OQ)listen to all the words of Sennacherib, who sent them to (OR)taunt the living God. 18 Truly, Lord, the (OS)kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries and their lands, 19 and have thrown their gods into the fire, for they were not gods but only the (OT)work of human hands, wood and stone. So they have (OU)destroyed them. 20 But now Lord, our God, (OV)save us from his hand, so that (OW)all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, [fv]Lord, are God.”

God Answers through Isaiah

21 Then (OX)Isaiah the son of Amoz sent word to Hezekiah, saying, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Because you have prayed to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22 this is the word that the Lord has spoken against him:

“She has shown contempt for you and derided you,
The (OY)virgin (OZ)daughter of Zion;
The daughter of Jerusalem has (PA)shaken her head behind you!
23 Whom have you (PB)taunted and blasphemed?
And against whom have you raised your voice
And [fw]haughtily (PC)raised your eyes?
Against the (PD)Holy One of Israel!
24 Through your servants you have taunted the Lord,
And you have said, ‘With my many chariots I came up to the heights of the mountains,
To the remotest parts of (PE)Lebanon;
And I cut down its tall (PF)cedars and its choice junipers.
And I will come to its [fx]highest peak, its thickest (PG)forest.
25 I dug wells and drank waters,
And (PH)with the sole of my feet I dried up
All the canals of [fy]Egypt.’
26 (PI)Have you not heard?
Long ago I did it,
From ancient times I (PJ)planned it.
Now (PK)I have brought it about
That (PL)you would turn fortified cities into (PM)ruined heaps.
27 Therefore their inhabitants were [fz]powerless,
They were shattered and put to shame;
They were like the (PN)vegetation of the field and the green grass,
Like (PO)grass on the housetops [ga]that is scorched before it has grown.
28 But I (PP)know your sitting down,
Your going out, your coming in,
And your raging against Me.
29 Because of your raging against Me
And because your (PQ)complacency has come up to My ears,
I will put My (PR)hook in your nose
And My (PS)bridle in your lips,
And I will turn you back (PT)by the way that you came.

30 “Then this shall be the sign for you: [gb]you will eat this year what (PU)grows of itself, in the second year what grows from the same, and in the third year sow, harvest, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31 The (PV)survivors that are (PW)left of the house of Judah will again (PX)take root downward and bear fruit upward. 32 For out of Jerusalem a (PY)remnant will go, and out of Mount Zion survivors. The (PZ)zeal of the Lord of armies will perform this.”’

33 “Therefore, this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not come to this city nor shoot an arrow there; and he will not come before it with a shield, nor heap up an (QA)assault ramp against it. 34 (QB)By the way that he came, by the same he will return, and he will not come to this city,’ declares the Lord. 35 ‘For I will (QC)protect this city to save it (QD)for My own sake, and for My servant David’s sake.’”

Assyrians Destroyed

36 Then the (QE)angel of the Lord went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when the rest got up early in the morning, behold, all of [gc]the 185,000 were [gd]dead. 37 So Sennacherib the king of Assyria departed and [ge]returned home and lived in (QF)Nineveh. 38 Then it came about, as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer killed him with the sword; and they escaped to the land of (QG)Ararat. And his son (QH)Esarhaddon became king in his place.

Hezekiah Healed

38 (QI)In those days Hezekiah became [gf]mortally ill. And (QJ)Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, came to him and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘(QK)Set your house in order, for you are going to die and not live.’” Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, and said, “(QL)Please, Lord, just remember how I have (QM)walked before You (QN)wholeheartedly and in truth, and (QO)have done what is good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah (QP)wept [gg]profusely.

Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah, saying, “Go and say to Hezekiah, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David says: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; behold, I will add (QQ)fifteen years to your [gh]life. And I will (QR)save you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will protect this city.”’

“And this shall be the (QS)sign to you from the Lord, that the Lord will perform this word that He has spoken: Behold, I will (QT)make the shadow on the stairway, which has gone down with the sun on the stairway of Ahaz, go back ten steps.” So the (QU)sun’s shadow went back ten steps on the stairway on which it had gone down.

This is a writing of Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and [gi]recovery:

10 I said, “(QV)In the middle of my [gj]life
I am to enter the (QW)gates of Sheol;
I have been (QX)deprived of the rest of my years.”
11 I said, “I will not see the Lord,
The Lord (QY)in the land of the living;
I will no longer look on mankind among the inhabitants of the world.
12 Like a shepherd’s (QZ)tent my dwelling is pulled up and removed from me;
As a (RA)weaver I (RB)rolled up my life.
He (RC)cuts me off from the loom;
From (RD)day until night You make an end of me.
13 I composed my soul until morning.
(RE)Like a lion—so He (RF)breaks all my bones,
From (RG)day until night You make an end of me.
14 (RH)Like a swallow, like a crane, so I twitter;
I (RI)moan like a dove;
My (RJ)eyes look wistfully to the heights;
Lord, I am oppressed, be my (RK)security.

15 (RL)What shall I say?
[gk]For He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done it;
I will (RM)walk [gl]quietly all my years because of the (RN)bitterness of my soul.
16 Lord, (RO)by these things people live,
And in all these is the life of my spirit;
[gm](RP)Restore me to health and (RQ)let me live!
17 Behold, for my own welfare I had great bitterness;
But You have [gn](RR)kept my soul from the pit of [go]nothingness,
For You have (RS)hurled all my sins behind Your back.
18 For (RT)Sheol cannot thank You,
Death cannot praise You;
Those who go down (RU)to the pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness.
19 It is the (RV)living who give thanks to You, as I do today;
A (RW)father tells his sons about Your faithfulness.
20 The Lord is certain to save me;
So we will (RX)play my songs on stringed instruments
(RY)All the days of our life (RZ)at the house of the Lord.”

21 Now (SA)Isaiah had said, “Have them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, so that he may recover.” 22 Then Hezekiah had said, “What is the (SB)sign that I will go up to the house of the Lord?”

Hezekiah Shows His Treasures

39 (SC)At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he heard that he had been sick and had recovered. Hezekiah [gp]was (SD)pleased, and let them see all his treasure house, the (SE)silver, the gold, the balsam oil, the excellent olive oil, his entire armory, and everything that was found in his treasuries. There was nothing in his house nor in all his realm that Hezekiah did not let them see. Then Isaiah the (SF)prophet came to King Hezekiah and said to him, “What did these men say, and from where did they come to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They came to me from a far (SG)country, from Babylon.” Then he said, “What have they seen in your house?” So Hezekiah [gq]answered, “They have seen everything that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasuries that I have not let them see.”

Isaiah then said to Hezekiah, “Hear the (SH)word of the Lord of armies, ‘Behold, the days are coming when (SI)everything that is in your house, and what your fathers have stored up to this day, will be carried to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the Lord. ‘And some of your sons who will come from you, whom you will father, (SJ)will be taken away, and (SK)they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’” (SL)Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good.” For he [gr]thought, “For there will be peace and truth (SM)in my days.”

The Greatness of God

40 (SN)Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.
(SO)Speak [gs]kindly to Jerusalem;
And call out to her, that her [gt](SP)warfare has ended,
That her [gu](SQ)guilt has been removed,
That she has received of the Lords hand
(SR)Double for all her sins.”

(SS)The voice of one calling out,
(ST)Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness;
Make [gv]straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Let every valley be lifted up,
And every mountain and hill be made low;
And let the uneven ground become a plain,
And the rugged terrain a broad valley;
[gw]Then the (SU)glory of the Lord will be revealed,
And (SV)all flesh will see it together;
For the (SW)mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
A voice says, “Call out.”
Then [gx]he answered, “What shall I call out?”
(SX)All flesh is grass, and all its [gy]loveliness is like the flower of the field.
The (SY)grass withers, the flower fades,
[gz]When the (SZ)breath of the Lord blows upon it;
The people are indeed grass!
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But (TA)the word of our God stands forever.

Go up on a (TB)high mountain,
Zion, messenger of (TC)good news,
Raise your voice forcefully,
Jerusalem, messenger of good news;
Raise it up, do not fear.
Say to the (TD)cities of Judah,
(TE)Here is your God!”
10 Behold, the Lord [ha]God will come (TF)with might,
With His (TG)arm ruling for Him.
Behold, His (TH)compensation is with Him,
And His reward before Him.
11 Like a shepherd He will (TI)tend His flock,
In His arm He will gather the lambs
And carry them in the fold of His robe;
He will gently lead the nursing ewes.

12 Who has (TJ)measured the [hb]waters in the hollow of His hand,
And measured the heavens with a [hc]span,
And [hd]calculated the dust of the earth with a measure,
And weighed the mountains in a balance
And the hills in a pair of scales?
13 (TK)Who has [he]directed the Spirit of the Lord,
Or as His (TL)counselor has informed Him?
14 (TM)With whom did He consult and who (TN)gave Him understanding?
And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge,
And informed Him of the way of understanding?
15 Behold, the (TO)nations are like a drop from a bucket,
And are regarded as a speck of (TP)dust on the scales;
Behold, He lifts up the [hf]islands like fine dust.
16 Even Lebanon is not enough to [hg]burn,
Nor its (TQ)animals enough for a burnt offering.
17 (TR)All the nations are as nothing before Him,
They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and [hh]meaningless.

18 (TS)To whom then will you liken God?
Or what likeness will you compare with Him?
19 As for the [hi](TT)idol, a craftsman casts it,
A goldsmith (TU)plates it with gold,
And a silversmith fashions chains of silver.
20 He who is too impoverished for such an offering
Selects a (TV)tree that does not rot;
He seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman
To [hj]prepare [hk]an idol that (TW)will not totter.

21 (TX)Do you not know? Have you not heard?
Has it not been declared to you from the beginning?
Have you not understood (TY)from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is He who [hl]sits above the [hm](TZ)circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like (UA)grasshoppers,
Who (UB)stretches out the heavens like a (UC)curtain
And spreads them out like a (UD)tent to live in.
23 It is He who reduces (UE)rulers to nothing,
Who (UF)makes the judges of the earth [hn]meaningless.
24 [ho]Scarcely have they been planted,
[hp]Scarcely have they been sown,
[hq]Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth,
But He merely blows on them, and they wither,
And the (UG)storm carries them away like stubble.
25 (UH)To whom then will you compare Me
That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One.
26 (UI)Raise your eyes on high
And see (UJ)who has created these stars,
The (UK)One who brings out their [hr]multitude by number,
He calls them all by name;
Because of the (UL)greatness of His might and the [hs]strength of His power,
(UM)Not one of them is missing.

27 (UN)Why do you say, Jacob, and you assert, Israel,
“My way is (UO)hidden from the Lord,
And the (UP)justice due me [ht]escapes the notice of (UQ)my God”?
28 (UR)Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The (US)Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is (UT)unsearchable.
29 He gives strength to the (UU)weary,
And to the one who lacks might He (UV)increases power.
30 Though (UW)youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous (UX)young men stumble badly,
31 Yet those who [hu]wait for the Lord
Will (UY)gain new strength;
They will [hv](UZ)mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.
