14 Poiché l'Eterno avrà pietà di Giacobbe, sceglierà ancora Israele e li ristabilirà sulla loro terra, gli stranieri si uniranno a loro e si stringeranno alla casa di Giacobbe.
2 I popoli li prenderanno e li ricondurranno nel loro paese e la casa d'Israele li possederà nel paese dell'Eterno come servi e serve; faranno prigionieri quelli che li avevano fatti prigionieri e regneranno sui loro oppressori.
3 Cosí nel giorno in cui l'Eterno ti avrà dato riposo dal tuo affanno, dalla tua agitazione e dalla dura schiavitú alla quale eri stato asservito,
4 tu pronunzierai questa sentenza sul re di Babilonia e dirai: «Come è finito l'oppressore, l'esattrice d'oro è finita.
5 L'Eterno ha spezzato il bastone degli empi, lo scettro dei despoti.
6 Colui che nel suo furore percuoteva i popoli con colpi incessanti, colui che dominava con ira sulle nazioni è inseguito senza misericordia.
7 Tutta la terra riposa tranquilla, la gente erompe in gridi di gioia.
8 Perfino i cipressi e i cedri del Libano gioiscono per te e dicono: "Da quando sei atterrato, nessun tagliabosco è piú salito contro di noi".
9 Lo Sceol, di sotto è in agitazione per te, per farsi incontro al tuo arrivo; esso risveglia gli spiriti dei trapassati, tutti i principi della terra; ha fatto alzare dai loro troni tutti i re delle nazioni.
10 Tutti prendono la parola per dirti: Anche tu sei diventato debole come noi e sei divenuto simile a noi.
11 Il tuo fasto è precipitato nello Sceol assieme al suono delle tue arpe; sotto di te si stende un letto di vermi e i vermi sono la tua coperta
12 Come mai sei caduto dal cielo, o Lucifero, figlio dell'aurora? Come mai sei stato gettato a terra, tu che atterravi le nazioni?
13 Tu dicevi in cuor tuo: "Io salirò in cielo, innalzerò il mio trono al di sopra delle stelle di Dio; mi siederò sul monte dell'assemblea, nella parte estrema del nord;
14 salirò sulle parti piú alte delle nubi, sarò simile all'Altissimo".
15 Invece sarai precipitato nello Sceol, nelle profondità della fossa,
16 Quanti ti vedono ti guardano fisso, ti osservano attentamente e dicono: "E' questo l'uomo che faceva tremare la terra, che scuoteva i regni,
17 che ridusse il mondo come un deserto, distrusse le sue città e non lasciò mai andar liberi i suoi prigionieri?"
18 Tutti i re delle nazioni, tutti quanti riposano in gloria, ciascuno nel proprio sepolcro;
19 tu invece sei stato gettato lontano dalla tua tomba come un germoglio abominevole, come un vestito di uccisi trafitti colla spada, che scendono sui sassi della fossa, come un cadavere calpestato.
20 Tu non sarai riunito a loro nella sepoltura, perché hai distrutto il tuo paese e hai ucciso il tuo popolo; la discendenza dei malfattori non sarà piú nominata.
21 Preparate il massacro dei suoi figli a causa della iniquità dei loro padri, perché non si alzino piú a prendere possesso della terra e a riempire la faccia del mondo di città.
22 Io mi leverò contro di loro dice l'Eterno degli eserciti, e sterminerò da Babilonia il nome e i superstiti, la progenie e la discendenza dice l'Eterno.
23 e farò il dominio del porcospino e paludi di acqua, la spazzerò con la scopa della distruzione dice l'Eterno degli eserciti».
24 L'Eterno degli eserciti ha giurato, dicendo: «In verità come ho pensato, cosí sarà, e come ho deciso, cosí accadrà.
25 Frantumerò l'Assiro nel mio paese e lo calpesterò sui miei monti; allora il suo giogo sarà rimosso da essi, e il suo carico sarà rimosso dalle loro spalle.
26 Questo è il piano deciso contro tutta la terra e questa è la mano stesa contro tutte le nazioni.
27 Poiché l'Eterno degli eserciti ha deciso questo e chi potrà annullarlo? La sua mano è stesa e chi potrà fargliela ritirare?».
28 Nell'anno della morte del re Achaz fu pronunciata questa profezia:
29 «Non ti rallegrare, o Filistia tutta quanta, perché la verga che ti colpiva è spezzata! Poiché dalla radice del serpente uscirà una vipera, e il suo frutto sarà un serpente ardente e volante.
30 I primogeniti dei poveri avranno di che cibarsi e i bisognosi riposeranno al sicuro; ma farò morire di fame la tua radice, e questo distruggerà il tuo residuo.
31 Urla, o porta, grida, o città! Struggi, o Filistia tutta quanta, perché dal nord viene un fumo, e nessuno lascia il suo posto nelle sue schiere».
32 Che si risponderà ai messaggeri di questa nazione? «Che l'Eterno ha fondato Sion e in essa gli afflitti del suo popolo trovano rifugio».

14 The Lord will have compassion(A) on Jacob;
once again he will choose(B) Israel
and will settle them in their own land.(C)
Foreigners(D) will join them
and unite with the descendants of Jacob.
2 Nations will take them
and bring(E) them to their own place.
And Israel will take possession of the nations(F)
and make them male and female servants in the Lord’s land.
They will make captives(G) of their captors
and rule over their oppressors.(H)
3 On the day the Lord gives you relief(I) from your suffering and turmoil(J) and from the harsh labor forced on you,(K) 4 you will take up this taunt(L) against the king of Babylon:(M)
How the oppressor(N) has come to an end!
How his fury[a] has ended!
5 The Lord has broken the rod(O) of the wicked,(P)
the scepter(Q) of the rulers,
6 which in anger struck down peoples(R)
with unceasing blows,
and in fury subdued(S) nations
with relentless aggression.(T)
7 All the lands are at rest and at peace;(U)
they break into singing.(V)
8 Even the junipers(W) and the cedars of Lebanon
gloat over you and say,
“Now that you have been laid low,
no one comes to cut us down.”(X)
9 The realm of the dead(Y) below is all astir
to meet you at your coming;
it rouses the spirits of the departed(Z) to greet you—
all those who were leaders(AA) in the world;
it makes them rise from their thrones—
all those who were kings over the nations.(AB)
10 They will all respond,
they will say to you,
“You also have become weak, as we are;
you have become like us.”(AC)
11 All your pomp has been brought down to the grave,(AD)
along with the noise of your harps;(AE)
maggots are spread out beneath you
and worms(AF) cover you.(AG)
12 How you have fallen(AH) from heaven,
morning star,(AI) son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!(AJ)
13 You said in your heart,
“I will ascend(AK) to the heavens;
I will raise my throne(AL)
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,(AM)
on the utmost heights(AN) of Mount Zaphon.[b]
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;(AO)
I will make myself like the Most High.”(AP)
15 But you are brought down(AQ) to the realm of the dead,(AR)
to the depths(AS) of the pit.(AT)
16 Those who see you stare at you,
they ponder your fate:(AU)
“Is this the man who shook(AV) the earth
and made kingdoms tremble,
17 the man who made the world a wilderness,(AW)
who overthrew(AX) its cities
and would not let his captives go home?”(AY)
18 All the kings of the nations lie in state,
each in his own tomb.(AZ)
19 But you are cast out(BA) of your tomb
like a rejected branch;
you are covered with the slain,(BB)
with those pierced by the sword,(BC)
those who descend to the stones of the pit.(BD)
Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20 you will not join them in burial,(BE)
for you have destroyed your land
and killed your people.
Let the offspring(BF) of the wicked(BG)
never be mentioned(BH) again.
21 Prepare a place to slaughter his children(BI)
for the sins of their ancestors;(BJ)
they are not to rise to inherit the land
and cover the earth with their cities.
22 “I will rise up(BK) against them,”
declares the Lord Almighty.
“I will wipe out Babylon’s name(BL) and survivors,
her offspring and descendants,(BM)”
declares the Lord.
23 “I will turn her into a place for owls(BN)
and into swampland;
I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,(BO)”
declares the Lord Almighty.(BP)
24 The Lord Almighty has sworn,(BQ)
“Surely, as I have planned,(BR) so it will be,
and as I have purposed, so it will happen.(BS)
25 I will crush the Assyrian(BT) in my land;
on my mountains I will trample him down.
His yoke(BU) will be taken from my people,
and his burden removed from their shoulders.(BV)”
26 This is the plan(BW) determined for the whole world;
this is the hand(BX) stretched out over all nations.
27 For the Lord Almighty has purposed,(BY) and who can thwart him?
His hand(BZ) is stretched out, and who can turn it back?(CA)
A Prophecy Against the Philistines
28 This prophecy(CB) came in the year(CC) King Ahaz(CD) died:
29 Do not rejoice, all you Philistines,(CE)
that the rod that struck you is broken;
from the root of that snake will spring up a viper,(CF)
its fruit will be a darting, venomous serpent.(CG)
30 The poorest of the poor will find pasture,
and the needy(CH) will lie down in safety.(CI)
But your root I will destroy by famine;(CJ)
it will slay(CK) your survivors.(CL)
31 Wail,(CM) you gate!(CN) Howl, you city!
Melt away, all you Philistines!(CO)
A cloud of smoke comes from the north,(CP)
and there is not a straggler in its ranks.(CQ)
32 What answer shall be given
to the envoys(CR) of that nation?
“The Lord has established Zion,(CS)
and in her his afflicted people will find refuge.(CT)”

13 Profezia su Babilonia, data in visione a Isaia, figlio di Amots.
2 «Issate una bandiera su un alto monte, alzate la voce verso di loro, agitate la mano perché entrino nelle porte dei principi.
3 Io ho dato ordini a quelli che sono a me consacrati, ho chiamato i miei prodi per eseguire la mia ira, quelli che esultano nella mia grandezza.
4 C'è il rumore di una grande moltitudine sui monti, simile a quello di un popolo immenso; il rumore tumultuoso di regni, di nazioni radunate. L'Eterno degli eserciti passa in rassegna l'esercito per la battaglia.
5 Vengono da un paese lontano, dalla estremità dei cieli, l'Eterno e gli strumenti della sua ira, per distruggere tutta la terra.
6 Urlate, perché il giorno dell'Eterno è vicino; esso viene come una devastazione da parte dell'Onnipotente.
7 Perciò tutte le mani saranno fiacche e ogni cuor d'uomo verrà meno.
8 Saranno colti da spavento, spasimi e dolori li prenderanno, si contorceranno come una partoriente, si guarderanno l'un l'altro sbigottiti, le loro facce saranno facce di fuoco.
9 Ecco, il giorno dell'Eterno viene: giorno crudele, d'indignazione e d'ira ardente, per fare della terra un deserto e sterminare da essa i peccatori.
10 Poiché le stelle del cielo e le loro costellazioni non faranno piú brillare la loro luce; il sole si oscurerà al suo sorgere e la luna non diffonderà piu la sua luce.
11 Io punirò il mondo per la sua malvagità e gli empi per la loro iniquità; metterò fine all'alterigia dei superbi e abbatterò l'arroganza dei tiranni.
12 Renderò l'uomo mortale piú raro dell'oro fino, l'umanità piú rara dell'oro di Ofir.
13 Perciò farò tremare i cieli, e la terra sarà scossa dal suo luogo a causa dell'indignazione dell'Eterno degli eserciti nel giorno della sua ira ardente.
14 Allora, come una gazzella inseguita o come un gregge che nessuno raduna, ognuno si volgerà verso il suo popolo, ognuno fuggirà al proprio paese.
15 Chiunque sarà trovato sarà trafitto, e chiunque sarà preso cadrà di spada.
16 I loro bambini saranno sfracellati davanti ai loro occhi, le loro case saranno saccheggiate e le loro mogli saranno violentate.
17 Ecco, io suscito contro di essi i Medi che non penseranno all'argento e non prenderanno alcun piacere nell'oro.
18 I loro archi atterreranno i giovani; non avranno pietà del frutto del grembo; il loro occhio non risparmierà i bambini.
19 Cosí Babilonia, lo splendore dei regni, la gloria dell'orgoglio dei Caldei, sarà come Sodoma e Gomorra quando DIO le sovvertí.
20 Essa non sarà mai piú abitata né popolata di generazione in generazione l'Arabo non vi pianterà piú la tenda, né i pastori vi faranno sostare le greggi.
21 Ma vi riposeranno le fiere del deserto, le sue case saranno piene di gufi, vi dimoreranno gli struzzi vi danzeranno i satiri.
22 Le iene ululeranno nelle sue case desolate, gli sciacalli nei suoi palazzi lussuosi. Il suo tempo si avvicina, i suoi giorni non saranno prolungati».

A Prophecy Against Babylon
13 A prophecy(A) against Babylon(B) that Isaiah son of Amoz(C) saw:(D)
2 Raise a banner(E) on a bare hilltop,
shout to them;
beckon to them
to enter the gates(F) of the nobles.
3 I have commanded those I prepared for battle;
I have summoned my warriors(G) to carry out my wrath(H)—
those who rejoice(I) in my triumph.
4 Listen, a noise on the mountains,
like that of a great multitude!(J)
Listen, an uproar(K) among the kingdoms,
like nations massing together!
The Lord Almighty(L) is mustering(M)
an army for war.
5 They come from faraway lands,
from the ends of the heavens(N)—
the Lord and the weapons(O) of his wrath(P)—
to destroy(Q) the whole country.
6 Wail,(R) for the day(S) of the Lord is near;
it will come like destruction(T) from the Almighty.[a](U)
7 Because of this, all hands will go limp,(V)
every heart will melt with fear.(W)
8 Terror(X) will seize them,
pain and anguish will grip(Y) them;
they will writhe like a woman in labor.(Z)
They will look aghast at each other,
their faces aflame.(AA)
9 See, the day(AB) of the Lord is coming
—a cruel(AC) day, with wrath(AD) and fierce anger(AE)—
to make the land desolate
and destroy the sinners within it.
10 The stars of heaven and their constellations
will not show their light.(AF)
The rising sun(AG) will be darkened(AH)
and the moon will not give its light.(AI)
11 I will punish(AJ) the world for its evil,
the wicked(AK) for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty(AL)
and will humble(AM) the pride of the ruthless.(AN)
12 I will make people(AO) scarcer than pure gold,
more rare than the gold of Ophir.(AP)
13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;(AQ)
and the earth will shake(AR) from its place
at the wrath(AS) of the Lord Almighty,
in the day of his burning anger.(AT)
14 Like a hunted(AU) gazelle,
like sheep without a shepherd,(AV)
they will all return to their own people,
they will flee(AW) to their native land.(AX)
15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through;
all who are caught will fall(AY) by the sword.(AZ)
16 Their infants(BA) will be dashed to pieces before their eyes;
their houses will be looted and their wives violated.(BB)
17 See, I will stir up(BC) against them the Medes,(BD)
who do not care for silver
and have no delight in gold.(BE)
18 Their bows(BF) will strike down the young men;(BG)
they will have no mercy(BH) on infants,
nor will they look with compassion on children.(BI)
19 Babylon,(BJ) the jewel of kingdoms,(BK)
the pride and glory(BL) of the Babylonians,[b]
will be overthrown(BM) by God
like Sodom and Gomorrah.(BN)
20 She will never be inhabited(BO)
or lived in through all generations;
there no nomads(BP) will pitch their tents,
there no shepherds will rest their flocks.
21 But desert creatures(BQ) will lie there,
jackals(BR) will fill her houses;
there the owls(BS) will dwell,
and there the wild goats(BT) will leap about.
22 Hyenas(BU) will inhabit her strongholds,(BV)
jackals(BW) her luxurious palaces.
Her time is at hand,(BX)
and her days will not be prolonged.(BY)
