Great Generosity

Now, brethren, we wish to make known to you the grace of God which has been (A)given in the churches of (B)Macedonia, that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the (C)wealth of their liberality. For I testify that (D)according to their ability, and beyond their ability, they gave of their own accord, begging us with much urging for the (E)favor [a]of participation in the [b](F)support of the [c]saints, and this, not as we had [d]expected, but they first (G)gave themselves to the Lord and to us by (H)the will of God. So we (I)urged (J)Titus that as he had previously (K)made a beginning, so he would also complete in you (L)this gracious work as well.

But just as you (M)abound (N)in everything, in faith and utterance and knowledge and in all earnestness and in the [e]love we inspired in you, see that you (O)abound in this gracious work also. I (P)am not speaking this as a command, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity of your love also. For you know (Q)the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that (R)though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich. 10 I (S)give my opinion in this matter, for this is to your advantage, who were the first to begin (T)a year ago not only to do this, but also to desire to do it. 11 But now finish [f]doing it also, so that just as there was the (U)readiness to desire it, so there may be also the completion of it by your ability. 12 For if the readiness is present, it is acceptable (V)according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. 13 For this is not for the ease of others and for your affliction, but by way of equality— 14 at this present time your abundance being a supply for (W)their need, so that their abundance also may become a supply for (X)your need, that there may be equality; 15 as it is written, “(Y)He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little had no lack.”

16 But (Z)thanks be to God who (AA)puts the same earnestness on your behalf in the heart of (AB)Titus. 17 For he not only accepted our (AC)appeal, but being himself very earnest, he has gone to you of his own accord. 18 We have sent along with him (AD)the brother whose fame in the things of the (AE)gospel has spread through (AF)all the churches; 19 (AG)and not only this, but he has also been (AH)appointed by the churches to travel with us in (AI)this gracious work, which is being administered by us for the glory of the Lord Himself, and to show our (AJ)readiness, 20 [g]taking precaution so that no one will discredit us in our administration of this generous gift; 21 for we (AK)have regard for what is honorable, not only in (AL)the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 22 We have sent with them our brother, whom we have often tested and found diligent in many things, but now even more diligent because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for (AM)Titus, he is my (AN)partner and fellow worker [h]among you; as for our (AO)brethren, they are [i](AP)messengers of the churches, (AQ)a glory to Christ. 24 Therefore [j]openly before the churches, [k]show them the proof of your love and of our (AR)reason for boasting about you.

God Gives Most

For (AS)it is superfluous for me to write to you about this (AT)ministry to the [l]saints; for I know your readiness, of which I (AU)boast about you to the (AV)Macedonians, namely, that (AW)Achaia has been prepared since (AX)last year, and your zeal has stirred up most of them. But I have sent the brethren, in order that our (AY)boasting about you may not be made empty in this case, so that, (AZ)as I was saying, you may be prepared; otherwise if any (BA)Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to speak of you—will be put to shame by this confidence. So I thought it necessary to urge the (BB)brethren that they would go on ahead to you and arrange beforehand your previously promised [m](BC)bountiful gift, so that the same would be ready as a [n](BD)bountiful gift and not [o](BE)affected by covetousness.

Now this I say, (BF)he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows [p]bountifully will also reap [q]bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not (BG)grudgingly or under compulsion, for (BH)God loves a cheerful giver. And (BI)God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; as it is written,

(BJ)He scattered abroad, he gave to the poor,
His righteousness [r]endures forever.”

10 Now He who supplies (BK)seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and (BL)increase the harvest of your righteousness; 11 you will be (BM)enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing (BN)thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying (BO)the needs of the [s]saints, but is also overflowing (BP)through many thanksgivings to God. 13 Because of the proof given by this (BQ)ministry, they will (BR)glorify God for your obedience to your (BS)confession of the (BT)gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your [t]contribution to them and to all, 14 while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you. 15 (BU)Thanks be to God for His indescribable (BV)gift!

Paul Describes Himself

10 Now (BW)I, Paul, myself (BX)urge you by the (BY)meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who (BZ)am [u]meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent! I ask that (CA)when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous against (CB)some, who regard us as if we walked (CC)according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war (CD)according to the flesh, for the (CE)weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but [v]divinely powerful (CF)for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every (CG)lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the (CH)obedience of Christ, and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever (CI)your obedience is complete.

[w](CJ)You are looking at [x]things as they are outwardly. (CK)If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ’s, let him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ’s, (CL)so also are we. For even if (CM)I boast somewhat [y]further about our (CN)authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame, [z]for I do not wish to seem as if I would terrify you by my letters. 10 For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his [aa]personal presence is (CO)unimpressive and (CP)his speech contemptible.” 11 Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present.

12 For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with [ab]some of those who (CQ)commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding. 13 But we will not boast (CR)beyond our measure, but [ac](CS)within the measure of the sphere which God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you. 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as if we did not reach to you, for (CT)we were the first to come even as far as you in the (CU)gospel of Christ; 15 not boasting (CV)beyond our measure, that is, in (CW)other men’s labors, but with the hope that as (CX)your faith grows, we will be, [ad]within our sphere, (CY)enlarged even more by you, 16 so as to (CZ)preach the gospel even to (DA)the regions beyond you, and not to boast [ae](DB)in what has been accomplished in the sphere of another. 17 But (DC)he who boasts is to boast in the Lord. 18 For it is not he who (DD)commends himself that is approved, but he (DE)whom the Lord commends.

Paul Defends His Apostleship

11 I wish that you would (DF)bear with me in a little (DG)foolishness; but [af]indeed you are bearing with me. For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I (DH)betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might (DI)present you as a pure virgin. But I am afraid that, as the (DJ)serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. For if [ag]one comes and preaches (DK)another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a (DL)different spirit which you have not received, or a (DM)different gospel which you have not accepted, you (DN)bear this (DO)beautifully. For I consider myself (DP)not in the least inferior to the [ah]most eminent apostles. But even if I am (DQ)unskilled in speech, yet I am not so in (DR)knowledge; in fact, in every way we have (DS)made this evident to you in all things.

Or (DT)did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because I preached the (DU)gospel of God to you (DV)without charge? I robbed other churches by (DW)taking wages from them to serve you; and when I was present with you and was in need, I was (DX)not a burden to anyone; for when (DY)the brethren came from (DZ)Macedonia they fully supplied my need, and in everything I kept myself from (EA)being a burden to you, [ai]and will continue to do so. 10 (EB)As the truth of Christ is in me, (EC)this boasting of mine will not be stopped in the regions of (ED)Achaia. 11 Why? (EE)Because I do not love you? (EF)God knows I do!

12 But what I am doing I will continue to do, (EG)so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be [aj]regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting. 13 For such men are (EH)false apostles, (EI)deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 No wonder, for even (EJ)Satan disguises himself as an (EK)angel of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, (EL)whose end will be according to their deeds.

16 (EM)Again I say, let no one think me foolish; but if you do, receive me even as foolish, so that I also may boast a little. 17 What I am saying, I am not saying [ak](EN)as the Lord would, but as (EO)in foolishness, in this confidence of boasting. 18 Since (EP)many boast (EQ)according to the flesh, I will boast also. 19 For you, (ER)being so wise, tolerate the foolish gladly. 20 For you tolerate it if anyone (ES)enslaves you, anyone (ET)devours you, anyone (EU)takes advantage of you, anyone (EV)exalts himself, anyone (EW)hits you in the face. 21 To my (EX)shame I must say that we have been (EY)weak by comparison.

But in whatever respect anyone else (EZ)is bold—I (FA)speak in foolishness—I am just as bold myself. 22 Are they (FB)Hebrews? (FC)So am I. Are they (FD)Israelites? (FE)So am I. Are they [al](FF)descendants of Abraham? (FG)So am I. 23 Are they (FH)servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane—I more so; in [am](FI)far more labors, in [an](FJ)far more imprisonments, [ao](FK)beaten times without number, often in (FL)danger of death. 24 Five times I received from the Jews (FM)thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was (FN)beaten with rods, once I was (FO)stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my (FP)countrymen, dangers from the (FQ)Gentiles, dangers in the (FR)city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among (FS)false brethren; 27 I have been in (FT)labor and hardship, [ap]through many sleepless nights, in (FU)hunger and thirst, often (FV)without food, in cold and [aq](FW)exposure. 28 Apart from such [ar]external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for (FX)all the churches. 29 Who is (FY)weak without my being weak? Who is [as]led into sin [at]without my intense concern?

30 If I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my (FZ)weakness. 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, (GA)He who is blessed forever, (GB)knows that I am not lying. 32 In (GC)Damascus the ethnarch under Aretas the king was (GD)guarding the city of the Damascenes in order to seize me, 33 and I was let down in a basket (GE)through a window [au]in the wall, and so escaped his hands.

Paul’s Vision

12 (GF)Boasting is necessary, though it is not profitable; but I will go on to visions and (GG)revelations [av]of the Lord. I know a man (GH)in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do not know, (GI)God knows—such a man was (GJ)caught up to the (GK)third heaven. And I know how such a man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, (GL)God knows— was (GM)caught up into (GN)Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak. (GO)On behalf of such a man I will boast; but on my own behalf I will not boast, except in regard to my (GP)weaknesses. For if I do wish to boast I will not be (GQ)foolish, (GR)for I will be speaking the truth; but I refrain from this, so that no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me.

A Thorn in the Flesh

Because of the surpassing greatness of the (GS)revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a (GT)thorn in the flesh, a (GU)messenger of Satan to [aw]torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord (GV)three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for (GW)power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather (GX)boast [ax]about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore (GY)I am well content with weaknesses, with [ay]insults, with (GZ)distresses, with (HA)persecutions, with (HB)difficulties, (HC)for Christ’s sake; for (HD)when I am weak, then I am strong.

11 I have become (HE)foolish; you yourselves compelled me. Actually I should have been commended by you, for (HF)in no respect was I inferior to the [az]most eminent apostles, even though (HG)I am a nobody. 12 The [ba](HH)signs [bb]of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by [bc]signs and wonders and [bd]miracles. 13 For in what respect were you treated as inferior to the rest of the churches, except that (HI)I myself did not become a burden to you? Forgive me (HJ)this wrong!

14 Here (HK)for this third time I am ready to come to you, and I (HL)will not be a burden to you; for I (HM)do not seek what is yours, but (HN)you; for (HO)children are not responsible to save up for their parents, but (HP)parents for their children. 15 I will (HQ)most gladly spend and be expended for your souls. If (HR)I love you more, am I to be loved less? 16 But be that as it may, I (HS)did not burden you myself; nevertheless, crafty fellow that I am, I (HT)took you in by deceit. 17 (HU)Certainly I have not taken advantage of you through any of those whom I have sent to you, have I? 18 I (HV)urged (HW)Titus to go, and I sent (HX)the brother with him. Titus did not take any advantage of you, did he? Did we not [be]conduct ourselves [bf]in the same (HY)spirit and walk (HZ)in the same steps?

19 All this time [bg]you have been thinking that we are defending ourselves to you. Actually, (IA)it is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ; and (IB)all for your upbuilding, (IC)beloved. 20 For I am afraid that perhaps (ID)when I come I may find you to be not what I wish and may be found by you to be not what you wish; that perhaps there will be (IE)strife, jealousy, (IF)angry tempers, (IG)disputes, (IH)slanders, (II)gossip, (IJ)arrogance, (IK)disturbances; 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God may humiliate me before you, and I may mourn over many of those who have (IL)sinned in the past and not repented of the (IM)impurity, [bh]immorality and sensuality which they have practiced.

Examine Yourselves

13 (IN)This is the third time I am coming to you. (IO)Every [bi]fact [bj]is to be confirmed by the [bk]testimony of two or three witnesses. I have previously said when present the second time, and though now absent I say in advance to those who have (IP)sinned in the past and to all the rest as well, that (IQ)if I come again I will not (IR)spare anyone, since you are (IS)seeking for proof of the (IT)Christ who speaks in me, and who is not weak toward you, but (IU)mighty in you. For indeed He was (IV)crucified because of weakness, yet He lives (IW)because of the power of God. For we also are (IX)weak [bl]in Him, yet (IY)we will live with Him because of the power of God directed toward you.

(IZ)Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; (JA)examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you [bm](JB)fail the test? But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves [bn]do not fail the test. Now we pray to God that you do no wrong; not that we ourselves may appear approved, but that you may do what is right, even though we may [bo]appear unapproved. For we can do nothing against the truth, but only for the truth. For we rejoice when we ourselves are (JC)weak but you are strong; this we also pray for, [bp]that you be (JD)made complete. 10 For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present (JE)I need not use (JF)severity, in accordance with the (JG)authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

11 (JH)Finally, brethren, [bq]rejoice, [br](JI)be made complete, be comforted, (JJ)be like-minded, (JK)live in peace; and (JL)the God of love and peace will be with you. 12 (JM)Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 (JN)All the [bs]saints greet you.

14 (JO)The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the (JP)love of God, and the (JQ)fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

The Collection for the Lord’s People

And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian(A) churches. In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.(B) For I testify that they gave as much as they were able,(C) and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing(D) in this service(E) to the Lord’s people.(F) And they exceeded our expectations: They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. So we urged(G) Titus,(H) just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion(I) this act of grace on your part. But since you excel in everything(J)—in faith, in speech, in knowledge,(K) in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you[a]—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

I am not commanding you,(L) but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace(M) of our Lord Jesus Christ,(N) that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor,(O) so that you through his poverty might become rich.(P)

10 And here is my judgment(Q) about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so.(R) 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness(S) to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has,(T) not according to what one does not have.

13 Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14 At the present time your plenty will supply what they need,(U) so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15 as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”[b](V)

Titus Sent to Receive the Collection

16 Thanks be to God,(W) who put into the heart(X) of Titus(Y) the same concern I have for you. 17 For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative.(Z) 18 And we are sending along with him the brother(AA) who is praised by all the churches(AB) for his service to the gospel.(AC) 19 What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us(AD) as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honor the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help.(AE) 20 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21 For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.(AF)

22 In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23 As for Titus,(AG) he is my partner(AH) and co-worker(AI) among you; as for our brothers,(AJ) they are representatives of the churches and an honor to Christ. 24 Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you,(AK) so that the churches can see it.

There is no need(AL) for me to write to you about this service(AM) to the Lord’s people.(AN) For I know your eagerness to help,(AO) and I have been boasting(AP) about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year(AQ) you in Achaia(AR) were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action. But I am sending the brothers(AS) in order that our boasting about you in this matter should not prove hollow, but that you may be ready, as I said you would be.(AT) For if any Macedonians(AU) come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to say anything about you—would be ashamed of having been so confident. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers(AV) to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift,(AW) not as one grudgingly given.(AX)

Generosity Encouraged

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.(AY) Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,(AZ) not reluctantly or under compulsion,(BA) for God loves a cheerful giver.(BB) And God is able(BC) to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need,(BD) you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts(BE) to the poor;
    their righteousness endures forever.”[c](BF)

10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food(BG) will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.(BH) 11 You will be enriched(BI) in every way so that you can be generous(BJ) on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.(BK)

12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs(BL) of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.(BM) 13 Because of the service(BN) by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God(BO) for the obedience that accompanies your confession(BP) of the gospel of Christ,(BQ) and for your generosity(BR) in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15 Thanks be to God(BS) for his indescribable gift!(BT)

Paul’s Defense of His Ministry

10 By the humility and gentleness(BU) of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul,(BV) who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” toward you when away! I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold(BW) as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world.(BX) For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.(BY) The weapons we fight with(BZ) are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power(CA) to demolish strongholds.(CB) We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,(CC) and we take captive every thought to make it obedient(CD) to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete.(CE)

You are judging by appearances.[d](CF) If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ,(CG) they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do.(CH) So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us(CI) for building you up rather than tearing you down,(CJ) I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive(CK) and his speaking amounts to nothing.”(CL) 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.

12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.(CM) When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13 We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us,(CN) a sphere that also includes you. 14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you(CO) with the gospel of Christ.(CP) 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits(CQ) by boasting of work done by others.(CR) Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow,(CS) our sphere of activity among you will greatly expand, 16 so that we can preach the gospel(CT) in the regions beyond you.(CU) For we do not want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[e](CV) 18 For it is not the one who commends himself(CW) who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.(CX)

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I hope you will put up with(CY) me in a little foolishness.(CZ) Yes, please put up with me! I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband,(DA) to Christ, so that I might present you(DB) as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning,(DC) your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached,(DD) or if you receive a different spirit(DE) from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel(DF) from the one you accepted, you put up with it(DG) easily enough.

I do not think I am in the least inferior to those “super-apostles.”[f](DH) I may indeed be untrained as a speaker,(DI) but I do have knowledge.(DJ) We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way. Was it a sin(DK) for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God(DL) to you free of charge?(DM) I robbed other churches by receiving support from them(DN) so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed.(DO) I have kept myself from being a burden to you(DP) in any way, and will continue to do so. 10 As surely as the truth of Christ is in me,(DQ) nobody in the regions of Achaia(DR) will stop this boasting(DS) of mine. 11 Why? Because I do not love you? God knows(DT) I do!(DU)

12 And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about. 13 For such people are false apostles,(DV) deceitful(DW) workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ.(DX) 14 And no wonder, for Satan(DY) himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.(DZ)

Paul Boasts About His Sufferings

16 I repeat: Let no one take me for a fool.(EA) But if you do, then tolerate me just as you would a fool, so that I may do a little boasting. 17 In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would,(EB) but as a fool.(EC) 18 Since many are boasting in the way the world does,(ED) I too will boast.(EE) 19 You gladly put up with(EF) fools since you are so wise!(EG) 20 In fact, you even put up with(EH) anyone who enslaves you(EI) or exploits you or takes advantage of you or puts on airs or slaps you in the face. 21 To my shame I admit that we were too weak(EJ) for that!

Whatever anyone else dares to boast about—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast about.(EK) 22 Are they Hebrews? So am I.(EL) Are they Israelites? So am I.(EM) Are they Abraham’s descendants? So am I.(EN) 23 Are they servants of Christ?(EO) (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder,(EP) been in prison more frequently,(EQ) been flogged more severely,(ER) and been exposed to death again and again.(ES) 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes(ET) minus one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods,(EU) once I was pelted with stones,(EV) three times I was shipwrecked,(EW) I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews,(EX) in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,(EY) in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.(EZ) 27 I have labored and toiled(FA) and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;(FB) I have been cold and naked. 28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.(FC) 29 Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?(FD) Who is led into sin,(FE) and I do not inwardly burn?

30 If I must boast, I will boast(FF) of the things that show my weakness.(FG) 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever,(FH) knows(FI) that I am not lying. 32 In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me.(FJ) 33 But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.(FK)

Paul’s Vision and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting.(FL) Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations(FM) from the Lord. I know a man in Christ(FN) who fourteen years ago was caught up(FO) to the third heaven.(FP) Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows.(FQ) And I know that this man—whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows— was caught up(FR) to paradise(FS) and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.(FT) Even if I should choose to boast,(FU) I would not be a fool,(FV) because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or because of these surpassingly great revelations.(FW) Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,(FX) a messenger of Satan,(FY) to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.(FZ) But he said to me, “My grace(GA) is sufficient for you, for my power(GB) is made perfect in weakness.(GC)(GD) Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight(GE) in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,(GF) in persecutions,(GG) in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.(GH)

Paul’s Concern for the Corinthians

11 I have made a fool of myself,(GI) but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the “super-apostles,”[g](GJ) even though I am nothing.(GK) 12 I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.(GL) 13 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you?(GM) Forgive me this wrong!(GN)

14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time,(GO) and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents,(GP) but parents for their children.(GQ) 15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well.(GR) If I love you more,(GS) will you love me less? 16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you.(GT) Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery! 17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent to you? 18 I urged(GU) Titus(GV) to go to you and I sent our brother(GW) with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not walk in the same footsteps by the same Spirit?

19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God(GX) as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends,(GY) is for your strengthening.(GZ) 20 For I am afraid that when I come(HA) I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be.(HB) I fear that there may be discord,(HC) jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition,(HD) slander,(HE) gossip,(HF) arrogance(HG) and disorder.(HH) 21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved(HI) over many who have sinned earlier(HJ) and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery(HK) in which they have indulged.

Final Warnings

13 This will be my third visit to you.(HL) “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”[h](HM) I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:(HN) On my return I will not spare(HO) those who sinned earlier(HP) or any of the others, since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me.(HQ) He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. For to be sure, he was crucified in weakness,(HR) yet he lives by God’s power.(HS) Likewise, we are weak(HT) in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him(HU) in our dealing with you.

Examine yourselves(HV) to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.(HW) Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you(HX)—unless, of course, you fail the test? And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. We are glad whenever we are weak(HY) but you are strong;(HZ) and our prayer is that you may be fully restored.(IA) 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh(IB) in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.(IC)

Final Greetings

11 Finally, brothers and sisters,(ID) rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace.(IE) And the God of love(IF) and peace(IG) will be with you.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.(IH) 13 All God’s people here send their greetings.(II)

14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,(IJ) and the love of God,(IK) and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit(IL) be with you all.
