Na-banh sỉ nhục Đa-vít

25 Lúc đó Sa-mu-ên qua đời, toàn dân Ít-ra-en họp lại than khóc ông rồi chôn cất ông nơi quê quán ở Ra-ma.

Đa-vít di chuyển tới sa mạc Ma-ôn [a]. 2 Có một người rất giàu ở Ma-ôn nhưng có đất đai ở Cạt-mên. Người có ba ngàn chiên và một ngàn dê. Người đang hớt lông chiên ở Cạt-mên. 3 Người tên là Na-banh [b] thuộc dòng dõi Ca-lép. Vợ tên là A-bi-ga-in. Nàng rất xinh đẹp và khôn ngoan, nhưng Na-banh thì hung ác.

4 Trong khi Đa-vít đang ở trong sa mạc thì nghe Na-banh đang hớt lông chiên. 5 Nên ông sai năm thanh niên bảo, “Hãy đi xuống gặp Na-banh ở Cạt-mên, nhân danh ta chào thăm người, 6 và nói, ‘Chúc ông và gia đình cùng những ai thuộc về ông được mạnh khoẻ. 7 Tôi nghe ông đang hớt lông chiên. Khi các kẻ chăn chiên của ông ở với chúng tôi, chúng tôi không làm gì hại họ cả. Trong suốt thời gian các kẻ chăn chiên ông ở Cạt-mên, họ không bị mất vật gì. 8 Ông hãy hỏi họ, họ sẽ cho ông biết. Chúng tôi đến với ông khi họ đang vui vẻ cho nên xin ông hãy nhân từ đối với các bạn trẻ của tôi. Xin ông cấp cho họ và cho bạn [c] ông là Đa-vít những gì ông có sẵn.’”

9 Các người của Đa-vít đến chuyển lời của Đa-vít cho Na-banh nhưng Na-banh sỉ nhục họ. 10 Anh ta đáp, “Đa-vít là ai? Thằng con trai của Gie-xê là người nào? Ôi chào, bọn nô lệ trốn khỏi chủ đông như thế à? 11 Ta có bánh và nước, ta có thịt thú mà ta giết để cho các tôi tớ hớt lông chiên ta ăn. Nhưng đừng mong ta cấp thức ăn cho lũ mà ta không hề quen biết.”

12 Những người của Đa-vít đi về thuật lại cho ông nghe lời Na-banh nói. 13 Đa-vít liền ra lệnh, “Các ngươi hãy đeo gươm vào!” Vậy họ đeo gươm vào, Đa-vít cũng làm như vậy. Khoảng bốn trăm người đi với Đa-vít, nhưng hai trăm người ở lại coi kho lương thực.

14 Một trong các tôi tớ Na-banh chạy đến thuật cho A-bi-ga-in hay, “Đa-vít sai người từ sa mạc đến chào ông chủ nhưng Na-banh sỉ nhục họ. 15 Mấy người đó rất tốt với chúng tôi. Họ không hề làm gì hại chúng tôi cả. Trong suốt thời gian ở ngoài đồng với họ, chúng tôi không bị mất cắp vật gì. 16 Ngày và đêm họ bảo vệ chúng tôi. Họ như bức tường bao quanh chúng tôi trong khi chúng tôi ở cùng họ và chăm sóc bầy chiên. 17 Vậy bà suy tính đi rồi tùy cách mà hành động. Nếu không ông chủ và gia đình sẽ gặp tai biến đó. Na-banh là người quá độc ác, không ai nói chuyện được.”

18 A-bi-ga-in liền vội vàng lấy hai trăm ổ bánh, hai bầu da rượu đầy, năm con chiên đã nấu chín, một thùng [d] lúa rang, một trăm bánh trái nho, và hai trăm bánh trái vả chất lên lưng lừa. 19 Rồi bà bảo các tôi tớ, “Các ngươi đi trước đi, ta theo sau.” Nhưng bà không nói gì với chồng cả.

20 A-bi-ga-in cỡi lừa đi xuống mật khu trong núi. Tình cờ bà gặp Đa-vít và những người theo ông ra đón.

21 Đa-vít mới vừa nói, “Thật vô ích! Ta đã trông chừng tài sản của Na-banh trong sa mạc để không con chiên nào bị lạc. Ta đối tốt với hắn mà bây giờ hắn lấy oán trả ơn. 22 Nguyện Thượng Đế phạt kẻ thù ta nặng hơn nữa nếu sáng mai mà ta còn để một người đàn ông nào trong nhà Na-banh sống sót.” [e]

23 Khi A-bi-ga-in thấy Đa-vít, bà vội vàng leo xuống lừa, cúi mặt xuống đất trước mặt ông. 24 Bà quì nơi chân Đa-vít van xin, “Thưa ông, tôi xin nhận trách nhiệm việc nầy! Xin để tôi giải thích cho ông. Xin ông nghe tôi. 25 Thưa ông, xin đừng để tâm đến người không ra gì là Na-banh đó. Tính tình hắn giống tên của hắn. Tên hắn là ‘điên,’ và đúng hắn là thằng điên. Nhưng tôi, kẻ tôi tớ ông không thấy những người ông sai đến. 26 CHÚA đã cản không cho ông giết hay trừng phạt ai. Cho nên tôi chỉ trong danh CHÚA và danh ông mà đoan chắc rằng những kẻ thù của ông và những kẻ muốn làm hại ông đều sẽ giống như Na-banh! 27 Tôi có mang theo quà biếu ông và những người theo ông. 28 Xin tha lỗi cho tôi. CHÚA chắc chắn sẽ khiến cho gia đình ông có nhiều vua, vì ông đã đánh trận cho Ngài và trong ông không có điều ác nào. 29 Dù có người rượt đuổi theo ông nhưng CHÚA là Thượng Đế của ông sẽ bảo vệ ông. Ngài sẽ ném mạng sống kẻ thù ông như người ta bắn viên đá từ cái ná. 30 CHÚA sẽ giữ mọi lời hứa về những điều tốt đẹp cho ông. Ngài sẽ đặt ông làm lãnh tụ trên Ít-ra-en. 31 Rồi ông sẽ không cảm thấy áy náy hay băn khoăn vì chính tay mình đã giết người vô tội và trừng phạt họ. Xin ông nhớ đến tôi khi CHÚA ban thành công cho ông.”

32 Đa-vít bảo A-bi-ga-in, “Chúc tụng CHÚA, Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en, đã đưa chị đến gặp tôi hôm nay. 33 Nguyện chị được phước nhờ sự khôn ngoan của chị. Hôm nay, chị đã cản không cho tôi giết người vô tội để trả thù. 34 Thật như CHÚA, là Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en hằng sống, Ngài đã cản không cho tôi làm hại chị. Nếu mà chị không vội đến gặp tôi thì chắc chắn không ai trong nhà Na-banh còn sống đến sáng hôm sau.”

35 Rồi Đa-vít nhận lễ vật của A-bi-ga-in. Ông bảo bà, “Thôi chị về bình yên. Tôi đã nghe lời của chị và sẽ làm theo điều chị yêu cầu.”

Na-banh chết

36 Khi A-bi-ga-in trở về gặp Na-banh thì hắn đang ở trong nhà, ăn uống như ông hoàng. Hắn đang say mèm. Cho nên A-bi-ga-in không nói gì với hắn cả cho đến sáng hôm sau. 37 Sáng hôm sau khi tỉnh rượu rồi, vợ hắn mới thuật lại hết mọi sự. Hắn đứng tim, người hóa trơ như đá. 38 Khoảng mười ngày sau CHÚA đánh Na-banh và hắn chết.

39 Khi Đa-vít nghe tin Na-banh chết, ông nói, “Đáng chúc tụng CHÚA! Na-banh sỉ nhục ta, nhưng CHÚA nâng đỡ ta! Ngài cản không cho ta làm quấy. CHÚA đã phạt Na-banh về điều quấy hắn làm.”

Rồi Đa-vít cho người nhắn hỏi A-bi-ga-in làm vợ mình. 40 Các tôi tớ ông đến Cạt-mên nói với A-bi-ga-in, “Đa-vít sai chúng tôi đến ngỏ ý muốn bà về làm vợ ông ta.”

41 A-bi-ga-in sấp mặt xuống đất nói, “Tôi là kẻ tôi tớ các anh. Tôi sẵn sàng phục vụ các anh và rửa chân cho các tôi tớ của chủ tôi.”

42 A-bi-ga-in vội vàng leo lên lưng lừa đi theo các người mà Đa-vít sai đến, có năm đứa tớ gái đi theo. Rồi bà làm vợ Đa-vít. 43 Đa-vít cũng lấy A-hi-nô-am ở Ghít-rê-ên. Cả hai người đều làm vợ Đa-vít. 44 Mi-canh, con gái Sau-lơ cũng là vợ Đa-vít nhưng Sau-lơ đã gả nàng cho Ba-tiên, con trai La-ít, người gốc Ga-lim.

David, Nabal and Abigail

25 Now Samuel died,(A) and all Israel assembled and mourned(B) for him; and they buried him at his home in Ramah.(C) Then David moved down into the Desert of Paran.[a]

2 A certain man in Maon,(D) who had property there at Carmel, was very wealthy.(E) He had a thousand goats and three thousand sheep, which he was shearing(F) in Carmel. 3 His name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail.(G) She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband was surly and mean in his dealings—he was a Calebite.(H)

4 While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep. 5 So he sent ten young men and said to them, “Go up to Nabal at Carmel and greet him in my name. 6 Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Good health(I) to you and your household! And good health to all that is yours!(J)

7 “‘Now I hear that it is sheep-shearing time. When your shepherds were with us, we did not mistreat(K) them, and the whole time they were at Carmel nothing of theirs was missing. 8 Ask your own servants and they will tell you. Therefore be favorable toward my men, since we come at a festive time. Please give your servants and your son David whatever(L) you can find for them.’”

9 When David’s men arrived, they gave Nabal this message in David’s name. Then they waited.

10 Nabal answered David’s servants, “Who(M) is this David? Who is this son of Jesse? Many servants are breaking away from their masters these days. 11 Why should I take my bread(N) and water, and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men coming from who knows where?”

12 David’s men turned around and went back. When they arrived, they reported every word. 13 David said to his men(O), “Each of you strap on your sword!” So they did, and David strapped his on as well. About four hundred men went(P) up with David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.(Q)

14 One of the servants told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, “David sent messengers from the wilderness to give our master his greetings,(R) but he hurled insults at them. 15 Yet these men were very good to us. They did not mistreat(S) us, and the whole time we were out in the fields near them nothing was missing.(T) 16 Night and day they were a wall(U) around us the whole time we were herding our sheep near them. 17 Now think it over and see what you can do, because disaster is hanging over our master and his whole household. He is such a wicked(V) man that no one can talk to him.”

18 Abigail acted quickly. She took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five dressed sheep, five seahs[b] of roasted grain,(W) a hundred cakes of raisins(X) and two hundred cakes of pressed figs, and loaded them on donkeys.(Y) 19 Then she told her servants, “Go on ahead;(Z) I’ll follow you.” But she did not tell(AA) her husband Nabal.

20 As she came riding her donkey into a mountain ravine, there were David and his men descending toward her, and she met them. 21 David had just said, “It’s been useless—all my watching over this fellow’s property in the wilderness so that nothing of his was missing.(AB) He has paid(AC) me back evil(AD) for good. 22 May God deal with David,[c] be it ever so severely,(AE) if by morning I leave alive one male(AF) of all who belong to him!”

23 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and bowed down before David with her face to the ground.(AG) 24 She fell at his feet and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord,(AH) and let me speak to you; hear what your servant has to say. 25 Please pay no attention, my lord, to that wicked man Nabal. He is just like his name—his name means Fool(AI),(AJ) and folly goes with him. And as for me, your servant, I did not see the men my lord sent. 26 And now, my lord, as surely as the Lord your God lives and as you live, since the Lord has kept you from bloodshed(AK) and from avenging(AL) yourself with your own hands, may your enemies and all who are intent on harming my lord be like Nabal.(AM) 27 And let this gift,(AN) which your servant has brought to my lord, be given to the men who follow you.

28 “Please forgive(AO) your servant’s presumption. The Lord your God will certainly make a lasting(AP) dynasty for my lord, because you fight the Lord’s battles,(AQ) and no wrongdoing(AR) will be found in you as long as you live. 29 Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life,(AS) the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God, but the lives of your enemies he will hurl(AT) away as from the pocket of a sling.(AU) 30 When the Lord has fulfilled for my lord every good thing he promised concerning him and has appointed him ruler(AV) over Israel, 31 my lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself. And when the Lord your God has brought my lord success, remember(AW) your servant.”(AX)

32 David said to Abigail, “Praise(AY) be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me. 33 May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed(AZ) this day and from avenging myself with my own hands. 34 Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has kept me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal(BA) would have been left alive by daybreak.”

35 Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him and said, “Go home in peace. I have heard your words and granted(BB) your request.”

36 When Abigail went to Nabal, he was in the house holding a banquet like that of a king. He was in high(BC) spirits and very drunk.(BD) So she told(BE) him nothing at all until daybreak. 37 Then in the morning, when Nabal was sober, his wife told him all these things, and his heart failed him and he became like a stone.(BF) 38 About ten days later, the Lord struck(BG) Nabal and he died.

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Praise be to the Lord, who has upheld my cause against Nabal for treating me with contempt. He has kept his servant from doing wrong and has brought Nabal’s wrongdoing down on his own head.”

Then David sent word to Abigail, asking her to become his wife. 40 His servants went to Carmel and said to Abigail, “David has sent us to you to take you to become his wife.”

41 She bowed down with her face to the ground and said, “I am your servant and am ready to serve you and wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” 42 Abigail(BH) quickly got on a donkey and, attended by her five female servants, went with David’s messengers and became his wife. 43 David had also married Ahinoam(BI) of Jezreel, and they both were his wives.(BJ) 44 But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Paltiel[d](BK) son of Laish, who was from Gallim.(BL)

25 (A)Now Samuel died. And all Israel assembled (B)and mourned for him, and they buried him (C)in his house at (D)Ramah.

David and Abigail

Then David rose and went down to (E)the wilderness of Paran. 2 And there was a man in (F)Maon whose business was in (G)Carmel. The man was very rich; he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. (H)He was shearing his sheep in Carmel. 3 Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail. The woman was discerning and beautiful, but the man was harsh and badly behaved; (I)he was a Calebite. 4 David heard in the wilderness that Nabal (J)was shearing his sheep. 5 So David sent ten young men. And David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, and go to Nabal and greet him in my name. 6 And thus you shall greet him:[a] (K)‘Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. 7 I hear that you have shearers. Now your shepherds have been with us, and we did them no harm, (L)and they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel. 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we come (M)on a feast day. Please give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.’”

9 When David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal in the name of David, and then they waited. 10 And Nabal answered David's servants, (N)“Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? (O)There are many servants these days who are breaking away from their masters. 11 Shall I take (P)my bread and my water and my meat that I have killed for my shearers and give it to (Q)men who come from I do not know where?” 12 So David's young men turned away and came back and told him all this. 13 And David said to his men, “Every man strap on his sword!” And every man of them strapped on his sword. David also strapped on his sword. And (R)about four hundred men went up after David, (S)while two hundred (T)remained with the baggage.

14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, “Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to greet our master, and he railed at them. 15 Yet the men were very good to us, and we suffered no harm, (U)and we did not miss anything when we were in the fields, as long as we went with them. 16 They were (V)a wall to us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. 17 Now therefore know this and consider what you should do, (W)for harm is determined against our master and against all his house, and he is such (X)a worthless man that one cannot speak to him.”

18 Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves and two skins of wine and five sheep already prepared and five seahs[b] of parched grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys. 19 And she said to her young men, “Go on before me; behold, I come after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal. 20 And as she rode on the donkey and came down under cover of the mountain, behold, David and his men came down toward her, and she met them. 21 Now David had said, “Surely in vain have I guarded all that this fellow has in the wilderness, (Y)so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him, and he has (Z)returned me evil for good. 22 (AA)God do so to the enemies of David[c] and more also, if by morning I leave so much as one male of all who belong to him.”

23 When Abigail saw David, she hurried (AB)and got down from the donkey (AC)and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, (AD)“On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant. 25 Let not my lord regard (AE)this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal[d] is his name, and folly is with him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. 26 Now then, my lord, (AF)as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, because (AG)the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt and from (AH)saving with your own hand, now then (AI)let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. 27 And now let this (AJ)present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord (AK)a sure house, because my lord (AL)is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God. And the lives of your enemies (AM)he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And when the Lord has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you prince[e] over Israel, 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my lord (AN)working salvation himself. And when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.”

32 And David said to Abigail, (AO)“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, (AP)who have kept me this day from bloodguilt (AQ)and from working salvation with my own hand! 34 For as surely (AR)as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, (AS)who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male.” 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought him. And he said to her, (AT)“Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition.”

36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, (AU)he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal's heart (AV)was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing (AW)at all until the morning light. 37 In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38 And about ten days later (AX)the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, (AY)“Blessed be the Lord who has (AZ)avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, (BA)and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing. (BB)The Lord has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent and (BC)spoke to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 When the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, “David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.” 41 And she rose (BD)and bowed with her face to the ground and said, “Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.” 42 And Abigail hurried and rose and mounted a donkey, and her five young women attended her. She followed the messengers of David and became his wife.

43 David also took Ahinoam of (BE)Jezreel, (BF)and both of them became his wives. 44 Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.
