The Ark Placed in a Tent

16 And they brought in the ark of God and set it inside ^(A)the tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. ²And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord ³and distributed to all Israel, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, a portion of meat,^[a] and a cake of raisins.

⁴Then he appointed some of the Levites as ministers before the ark of the Lord, to invoke, to thank, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel. ⁵^(B)Asaph was the chief, and second to him were Zechariah, Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel, who were to play harps and lyres; Asaph was to sound the cymbals, ⁶and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God. ⁷Then on that day ^(C)David first appointed that thanksgiving be sung to the Lord by Asaph and his brothers.

David's Song of Thanks

⁸^(D)Oh give thanks to the Lord; ^(E)call upon his name;
    ^(F)make known his deeds among the peoples!
⁹Sing to him, sing praises to him;
    tell of all his wondrous works!
¹⁰Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
¹¹^(G)Seek the Lord and his strength;
    seek his presence continually!
¹²^(H)Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
    ^(I)his miracles and the judgments he uttered,
¹³O offspring of Israel his servant,
    children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

¹⁴He is the Lord our God;
    ^(J)his judgments are in all the earth.
¹⁵Remember his covenant forever,
    the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
¹⁶the covenant ^(K)that he made with Abraham,
    his sworn promise to Isaac,
¹⁷which ^(L)he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
    to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
¹⁸saying, ^(M)“To you I will give the land of Canaan,
    as your portion for an inheritance.”

¹⁹When you were ^(N)few in number,
    of little account, and ^(O)sojourners in it,
²⁰wandering from nation to nation,
    from one kingdom to another people,
²¹he allowed no one to oppress them;
    he ^(P)rebuked kings on their account,
²²saying, “Touch not my anointed ones,
    do my ^(Q)prophets no harm!”

²³^(R)Sing to the Lord, all the earth!
    Tell of his salvation from day to day.
²⁴Declare his glory among the nations,
    his marvelous works among all the peoples!
²⁵For ^(S)great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and he is to be feared ^(T)above all gods.
²⁶For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
    ^(U)but the Lord made the heavens.
²⁷Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and joy are in his place.

²⁸Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
    ^(V)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
²⁹Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    bring an offering and come before him!
^(W)Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;^[b]
³⁰    tremble before him, all the earth;
    yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
³¹^(X)Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice,
    and let them say among the nations, ^(Y)“The Lord reigns!”
³²^(Z)Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
    let the field exult, and everything in it!
³³Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy
    before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.
³⁴Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
    for his steadfast love endures forever!

³⁵^(AA)Say also:

“Save us, O God of our salvation,
    and gather and deliver us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.
³⁶^(AB)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!”

^(AC)Then all the people said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord.

Worship Before the Ark

³⁷So David left Asaph and his brothers there ^(AD)before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister regularly before the ark ^(AE)as each day required, ³⁸and also ^(AF)Obed-edom and his^[c] sixty-eight brothers, while ^(AG)Obed-edom, the son of Jeduthun, and ^(AH)Hosah were to be gatekeepers. ³⁹And he left ^(AI)Zadok the priest and his brothers the priests before the tabernacle of the Lord ^(AJ)in the high place that was at Gibeon ⁴⁰to offer burnt offerings to the Lord ^(AK)on the altar of burnt offering ^(AL)regularly morning and evening, to do all that is written in the Law of the Lord that he commanded Israel. ⁴¹With them were ^(AM)Heman and Jeduthun ^(AN)and the rest of those chosen and ^(AO)expressly named to give thanks to the Lord, ^(AP)for his steadfast love endures forever. ⁴²Heman and Jeduthun had trumpets and cymbals for the music and instruments ^(AQ)for sacred song. The sons of Jeduthun were appointed to the gate.

⁴³^(AR)Then all the people departed each to his house, and David went home to bless his household.

Offerings for the Temple

29 And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is ^(A)young and inexperienced, and the work is great, for ^(B)the palace will not be for man but for the Lord God. ²So I have provided for the house of my God, so far as I was able, the gold for the things of gold, the silver for the things of silver, and the bronze for the things of bronze, the iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood, besides great quantities of ^(C)onyx and stones for setting, antimony, colored stones, all sorts of precious stones and marble. ³Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God: ⁴^(D)3,000 talents^[a] of gold, of the gold of ^(E)Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the house,^[b] ⁵and for all the work to be done by craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver. Who then will offer willingly, consecrating himself^[c] today to the Lord?”

⁶Then ^(F)the leaders of fathers' houses made their freewill offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and ^(G)the officers over the king's work. ⁷They gave for the service of the house of God 5,000 talents and 10,000 ^(H)darics^[d] of gold, 10,000 talents of silver, 18,000 talents of bronze and 100,000 talents of iron. ⁸And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, in the care of ^(I)Jehiel the Gershonite. ⁹Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a ^(J)whole heart they had offered freely to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

David Prays in the Assembly

¹⁰Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: ^(K)“Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. ¹¹^(L)Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. ¹²^(M)Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. ^(N)In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. ¹³And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.

¹⁴“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. ¹⁵^(O)For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are ^(P)like a shadow, and there is no abiding.^[e] ¹⁶O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own. ¹⁷I know, my God, ^(Q)that you test the heart and ^(R)have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. ¹⁸O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people, and direct their hearts toward you. ¹⁹^(S)Grant to Solomon my son a whole heart that he may keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes, performing all, and that he may ^(T)build the palace ^(U)for which I have made provision.”

²⁰Then David said to all the assembly, ^(V)“Bless the Lord your God.” And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, ^(W)and bowed their heads and paid homage to the Lord and to the king. ²¹And they offered sacrifices to the Lord, and on the next day offered burnt offerings to the Lord, 1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, and 1,000 lambs, with their ^(X)drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. ²²And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with great gladness.

Solomon Anointed King

And they made Solomon the son of David king ^(Y)the second time, and they ^(Z)anointed him as prince for the Lord, and ^(AA)Zadok as priest.

²³^(AB)Then Solomon sat on the ^(AC)throne of the Lord as king in place of David his father. And he prospered, and all Israel obeyed him. ²⁴All the leaders and the mighty men, and also all the sons of King David, pledged their allegiance to King Solomon. ²⁵And the Lord made Solomon very ^(AD)great in the sight of all Israel and ^(AE)bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

The Death of David

²⁶Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. ²⁷The ^(AF)time that he reigned over Israel was forty years. He reigned seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. ²⁸Then he died ^(AG)at a good age, ^(AH)full of days, riches, and honor. And Solomon his son reigned in his place. ²⁹Now the acts of King David, from first to last, are written in the Chronicles ^(AI)of Samuel the seer, and in the Chronicles of ^(AJ)Nathan the prophet, and in the Chronicles of ^(AK)Gad the seer, ³⁰with accounts of all his rule and his might and of the circumstances ^(AL)that came upon him and upon Israel and upon all the kingdoms of the countries.
