Paul’s Reliance upon the Spirit

And when I came to you, brothers and sisters, I (A)did not come as someone superior in [a]speaking ability or [b]wisdom, as I proclaimed to you (B)the [c]testimony of God. For I determined to know nothing among you except (C)Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. I also was with you in (D)weakness and (E)fear, and in great trembling, and my [d]message and my preaching were (F)not in persuasive words of [e]wisdom, but in demonstration of (G)the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not [f]rest on the [g]wisdom of mankind, but on (H)the power of God.

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are (I)mature; a wisdom, however, not of (J)this age nor of the rulers of (K)this age, who are (L)passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a (M)mystery, the hidden wisdom which God (N)predestined before the (O)ages to our glory; the wisdom (P)which none of the rulers of (Q)this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified (R)the Lord of glory; but just as it is written:

(S)Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the human heart,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10 [h](T)For to us God revealed them (U)through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the (V)depths of God. 11 For who among people knows the thoughts of a person except the (W)spirit of the person that is in him? So also the thoughts of God no one knows, except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we (X)have not received the spirit of (Y)the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God. 13 We also speak these things, (Z)not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, [i]combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

14 But [j]a (AA)natural person (AB)does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are (AC)foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But the one who is (AD)spiritual discerns all things, yet he himself is [k]discerned by no one. 16 For (AE)who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But (AF)we have the mind of Christ.

Foundations for Living

And I, brothers and sisters, could not speak to you as (AG)spiritual people, but only as (AH)fleshly, as to (AI)infants in Christ. I gave you (AJ)milk to drink, not solid food; for you (AK)were not yet able to consume it. But even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is (AL)jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking (AM)like ordinary people? For when (AN)one person says, “I am [l]with Paul,” and another, “I am [m]with Apollos,” are you not ordinary (AO)people?

What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? (AP)Servants through whom you believed, even (AQ)as the Lord gave opportunity to each one. (AR)I planted, (AS)Apollos watered, but (AT)God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth. Now the one who plants and the one who waters are one; but each will (AU)receive his own [n]reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s (AV)fellow workers; you are God’s [o](AW)field, God’s (AX)building.

10 According to (AY)the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder (AZ)I laid a foundation, and (BA)another is building on it. But each person must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay a (BB)foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 (BC)each one’s work will become evident; for (BD)the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test [p]the quality of each one’s work. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it remains, he will (BE)receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet only (BF)so as through fire.

16 (BG)Do you not know that (BH)you are a [q]temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys the [r]temple of God, God will destroy [s]that person; for the [t]temple of God is holy, [u]and that is what you are.

18 (BI)Take care that no one deceives himself. (BJ)If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in (BK)this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. 19 For (BL)the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God. For it is written: “He is (BM)the one who catches the wise by their craftiness”; 20 and again, “(BN)The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are useless.” 21 So then, (BO)no one is to be boasting in people. For (BP)all things belong to you, 22 (BQ)whether Paul or Apollos or [v]Cephas, or the world or (BR)life or death, or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, 23 and (BS)you belong to Christ, and (BT)Christ belongs to God.

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom(A) as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[a] For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.(B) I came to you(C) in weakness(D) with great fear and trembling.(E) My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,(F) but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,(G) so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.(H)

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,(I) but not the wisdom of this age(J) or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.(K) No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery(L) that has been hidden(M) and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age(N) understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.(O) However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[b]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—(P)

10 these are the things God has revealed(Q) to us by his Spirit.(R)

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts(S) except their own spirit(T) within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit(U) of the world,(V) but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom(W) but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[c] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God(X) but considers them foolishness,(Y) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit(Z) makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”[d](AA)

But we have the mind of Christ.(AB)

The Church and Its Leaders

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit(AC) but as people who are still worldly(AD)—mere infants(AE) in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food,(AF) for you were not yet ready for it.(AG) Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling(AH) among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,”(AI) are you not mere human beings?

What, after all, is Apollos?(AJ) And what is Paul? Only servants,(AK) through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed,(AL) Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.(AM) For we are co-workers in God’s service;(AN) you are God’s field,(AO) God’s building.(AP)

10 By the grace God has given me,(AQ) I laid a foundation(AR) as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(AS) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(AT) because the Day(AU) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(AV) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(AW) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(AX)

16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple(AY) and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?(AZ) 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise(BA) by the standards of this age,(BB) you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness(BC) in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”[e];(BD) 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”[f](BE) 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!(BF) All things are yours,(BG) 22 whether Paul or Apollos(BH) or Cephas[g](BI) or the world or life or death or the present or the future(BJ)—all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ,(BK) and Christ is of God.
