when I heal Israel,(A)
the iniquity of Ephraim(B) and the crimes of Samaria(C)
will be exposed.
For they practice fraud;(D)
a thief breaks in;
a raiding party pillages outside.(E)
But they never consider that I remember all their evil.(F)
Now their actions are all around them;(G)
they are right in front of my face.

Israel’s Corruption

They please the king with their evil,(H)
the princes with their lies.(I)

All of them commit adultery;(J)
they are like an oven heated by a baker
who stops stirring the fire
from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
On the day of our king,
the princes are sick with the heat of wine(K)
there is a conspiracy with traitors.[a]
For they—their hearts like an oven—
draw him into their oven.
Their anger smolders all night;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.

All of them are as hot as an oven,(L)
and they consume their rulers.(M)
All their kings fall;
not one of them calls on me.[b]
Ephraim has allowed himself to get mixed up with the nations.
Ephraim is unturned bread baked on a griddle.
Foreigners consume his strength,(N)
but he does not notice.(O)
Even his hair is streaked with gray,
but he does not notice.
10 Israel’s arrogance testifies against them,[c](P)
yet they do not return to the Lord their God,(Q)
and for all this, they do not seek him.

11 So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove;(R)
they call to Egypt,(S) and they go to Assyria.(T)
12 As they are going, I will spread my net over them;(U)
I will bring them down like birds of the sky.
I will discipline them in accordance
with the news that reaches[d] their assembly.

The Lord’s Second Lament

13 Woe to them,(V) for they fled from me;(W)
destruction to them, for they rebelled against me!
Though I want to redeem them,(X)
they speak lies against me.
14 They do not cry to me from their hearts;
rather, they wail on their beds.
They slash themselves[e](Y) for grain and new wine;(Z)
they turn away from me.
15 I trained and strengthened their arms,(AA)
but they plot evil against me.(AB)
16 They turn, but not to what is above;[f]
they are like a faulty bow.(AC)
Their leaders will fall by the sword
because of their insolent tongue.(AD)
They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt.(AE)

Israel’s False Hopes

Put the ram’s horn to your mouth!(AF)
One like an eagle comes
against the house of the Lord,(AG)
because they transgress my covenant(AH)
and rebel against my law.(AI)
Israel cries out to me,(AJ)
“My God, we know you!”
Israel has rejected what is good;(AK)
an enemy will pursue him.

They have installed kings,(AL)
but not through me.
They have appointed leaders,
but without my approval.
They make their silver and gold(AM)
into idols for themselves
for their own destruction.[g]
Your calf-idol[h](AN) is rejected, Samaria.(AO)
My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of innocence?(AP)
For this thing is from Israel—
a craftsman made it,(AQ) and it is not God.
The calf of Samaria will be smashed to bits!

Indeed, they sow the wind(AR)
and reap the whirlwind.(AS)
There is no standing grain;
what sprouts fails to yield flour.(AT)
Even if they did,
foreigners would swallow it up.
Israel is swallowed up!(AU)
Now they are among the nations
like discarded pottery.(AV)
For they have gone up to Assyria(AW)
like a wild donkey going off on its own.
Ephraim has paid for love.(AX)
10 Even though they hire lovers among the nations,
I will now round them up,
and they will begin to decrease in number(AY)
under the burden of the king and leaders.(AZ)
11 When Ephraim multiplied his altars for sin,(BA)
they became his altars for sinning.
12 Though I were to write out for him
ten thousand points of my instruction,(BB)
they would be[i] regarded as something strange.
13 Though they offer sacrificial gifts[j](BC)
and eat the flesh,(BD)
the Lord does not accept them.
Now he will remember their guilt(BE)
and punish their sins;(BF)
they will return to Egypt.(BG)
14 Israel has forgotten his Maker(BH) and built palaces;(BI)
Judah has also multiplied fortified cities.
I will send fire on their cities,(BJ)
and it will consume their citadels.

The Coming Exile

Israel, do not rejoice jubilantly as the nations do,(BK)
for you have acted promiscuously,(BL) leaving your God.
You love the wages of a prostitute
on every grain-threshing floor.(BM)
Threshing floor and wine vat will not sustain them,(BN)
and the new wine will fail them.
They will not stay in the land of the Lord.
Instead, Ephraim will return to Egypt,(BO)
and they will eat unclean food(BP) in Assyria.(BQ)
They will not pour out
their wine offerings to the Lord,(BR)
and their sacrifices will not please him.
Their food will be like the bread of mourners;
all who eat it become defiled.(BS)
For their bread will be for their appetites alone;
it will not enter the house of the Lord.
What will you do on a festival day,(BT)
on the day of the Lord’s feast?(BU)
For even if they flee from devastation,
Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them.(BV)
Thistles will take possession of their precious silver;
thorns will invade their tents.(BW)
The days of punishment have come;(BX)
the days of retribution have come.(BY)
Let Israel recognize it!
The prophet is a fool,(BZ)
and the inspired man is insane,(CA)
because of the magnitude
of your iniquity and hostility.(CB)
Ephraim’s watchman is with my God.
Yet the prophet encounters a bird trap
on all his pathways.(CC)
Hostility is in the house of his God!
They have deeply corrupted themselves(CD)
as in the days of Gibeah.(CE)
He will remember their iniquity;
he will punish their sins.(CF)

Ephraim Bereaved of Offspring

10 I discovered Israel
like grapes in the wilderness.(CG)
I saw your ancestors
like the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season.(CH)
But they went to Baal-peor,(CI)
consecrated themselves to Shame,[k](CJ)
and became abhorrent,(CK)
like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird:(CL)
no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.(CM)
12 Even if they raise children,
I will bereave them of each one.
Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!(CN)
13 I have seen Ephraim like Tyre,(CO)
planted in a meadow,
so Ephraim will bring out his children
to the executioner.
14 Give them, Lord
What should you give?
Give them a womb that miscarries
and breasts that are dry!(CP)

15 All their evil appears at Gilgal,(CQ)
for there I began to hate them.
I will drive them from my house
because of their evil, wicked actions.(CR)
I will no longer love them;
all their leaders are rebellious.(CS)
16 Ephraim(CT) is struck down;
their roots are withered;
they cannot bear fruit.(CU)
Even if they bear children,
I will kill the precious offspring of their wombs.(CV)
17 My God will reject them
because they have not listened to him;(CW)
they will become wanderers among the nations.(CX)

The Vine and the Calf

10 Israel is a lush[l] vine;(CY)
it yields fruit for itself.
The more his fruit increased,
the more he increased the altars.(CZ)
The better his land produced,
the better they made the sacred pillars.(DA)
Their hearts are devious;[m](DB)
now they must bear their guilt.(DC)
The Lord will break down their altars(DD)
and demolish their sacred pillars.
In fact, they are now saying,
“We have no king!
For we do not fear the Lord.(DE)
What can a king do for us?”
They speak mere words,
taking false oaths while making covenants.(DF)
So lawsuits break out
like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field.(DG)

The residents of Samaria(DH) will have anxiety
over the calf(DI) of Beth-aven.(DJ)
Indeed, its idolatrous priests rejoiced over it;
the people will mourn over it,
over its glory.(DK)
It will certainly go into exile.
The calf itself will be taken to Assyria(DL)
as an offering to the great king.[n](DM)
Ephraim will experience shame;(DN)
Israel will be ashamed of its counsel.(DO)
Samaria’s king will disappear[o](DP)
like foam[p] on the surface of the water.
The high places(DQ) of Aven, the sin of Israel,(DR)
will be destroyed;
thorns and thistles will grow over their altars.(DS)
They will say to the mountains,(DT) “Cover us!”
and to the hills, “Fall on us!” (DU)

Israel’s Defeat because of Sin

Israel, you have sinned
since the days of Gibeah;(DV)
they have taken their stand there.
Will not war against the unjust
overtake them in Gibeah?
10 I will discipline(DW) them at my discretion;(DX)
nations will be gathered against them
to put them in bondage[q]
for their double iniquity.(DY)

11 Ephraim is a well-trained calf(DZ)
that loves to thresh,
but I will place a yoke on[r] her fine neck.(EA)
I will harness Ephraim;(EB)
Judah will plow;
Jacob will do the final plowing.
12 Sow righteousness for yourselves(EC)
and reap faithful love;
break up your unplowed ground.(ED)
It is time to seek the Lord(EE)
until he comes(EF) and sends righteousness
on you like the rain.(EG)

13 You have plowed wickedness and reaped injustice;(EH)
you have eaten the fruit of lies.(EI)
Because you have trusted in your own way[s]
and in your large number of soldiers,(EJ)
14 the roar of battle will rise against your people,
and all your fortifications will be demolished(EK)
in a day of war,
like Shalman’s destruction of Beth-arbel.
Mothers will be dashed to pieces
along with their children.(EL)
15 So it will be done to you, Bethel,(EM)
because of your extreme evil.
At dawn the king of Israel will be totally destroyed.
