A Call to Repentance

Come, let’s return to the Lord.(A)
For he has torn us,(B)
and he will heal us;(C)
he has wounded us,
and he will bind up our wounds.(D)
He will revive us after two days,(E)
and on the third day he will raise us up
so we can live in his presence.(F)
Let’s strive to know the Lord.(G)
His appearance is as sure as the dawn.(H)
He will come to us like the rain,(I)
like the spring showers that water the land.

The Lord’s First Lament

What am I going to do with you, Ephraim?(J)
What am I going to do with you, Judah?
Your love is like the morning mist(K)
and like the early dew that vanishes.
This is why I have used the prophets
to cut them down;[a](L)
I have killed them with the words from my mouth.
My judgment strikes like lightning.[b]
For I desire faithful love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God(M) rather than burnt offerings.(N)

But they, like Adam,[c] have violated the covenant;(O)
there they have betrayed me.(P)

Gilead is a city of evildoers,(Q)
tracked with bloody footprints.(R)
Like raiders who wait in ambush for someone,(S)
a band of priests murders on the road to Shechem.(T)
They commit atrocities.(U)
10 I have seen something horrible(V) in the house of Israel:
Ephraim’s promiscuity is there;(W) Israel is defiled.

11 A harvest is also appointed for you, Judah.(X)
When I restore the fortunes of my people,(Y)

when I heal Israel,(Z)
the iniquity of Ephraim(AA) and the crimes of Samaria(AB)
will be exposed.
For they practice fraud;(AC)
a thief breaks in;
a raiding party pillages outside.(AD)
But they never consider that I remember all their evil.(AE)
Now their actions are all around them;(AF)
they are right in front of my face.

  1. 6:5 Or have cut down the prophets
  2. 6:5 LXX, Syr, Tg; MT reads Your judgments go out as light
  3. 6:7 Or they, as at Adam, or they, like men,

53 Who has believed what we have heard?[a]
And to whom has the arm of the Lord(A) been revealed?(B)
He grew up before him like a young plant(C)
and like a root out of dry ground.
He didn’t have an impressive form
or majesty that we should look at him,
no appearance that we should desire him.(D)
He was despised and rejected by men,(E)
a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.(F)
He was like someone people turned away from;[b]
he was despised, and we didn’t value him.

Yet he himself bore our sicknesses,
and he carried our pains;(G)
but we in turn regarded him stricken,
struck down by God,(H) and afflicted.
But he was pierced because of our rebellion,(I)
crushed because of our iniquities;(J)
punishment(K) for our peace was on him,
and we are healed by his wounds.(L)
We all went astray like sheep;(M)
we all have turned to our own way;
and the Lord has punished him
for[c] the iniquity(N) of us all.(O)

Lord of the Sabbath

12 At that time Jesus passed through the grainfields on the Sabbath.(A) His disciples(B) were hungry and began to pick and eat some heads of grain. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “See, your disciples are doing what is not lawful(C) to do on the Sabbath.”

He said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry: how he entered the house of God, and they ate[a] the bread of the Presence—which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests?(D) Or haven’t you read in the law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent?(E) I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(F) If you had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice,[b](G) you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”(H)
