⁸ The high places of ^(A)Aven, ^(B)the sin of Israel,
    shall be destroyed.
^(C)Thorn and thistle shall grow up
    on their altars,
and ^(D)they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
    and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

^19 (A)And people shall enter the caves of the rocks
    and the holes of the ground,^[a]
from before the terror of the Lord,
    and from the splendor of his majesty,
    ^(B)when he rises to terrify the earth.

⁶ For behold, they are going away from destruction;
    but ^(A)Egypt shall gather them;
    Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possess ^(B)their precious things of silver;
    ^(C)thorns shall be in their tents.

¹⁴ Those who swear by ^(A)the Guilt of Samaria,
    and say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’
and, ‘As ^(B)the Way of ^(C)Beersheba lives,’
    they shall fall, and never rise again.”

^13 (A)for the soil of my people
    growing up in thorns and briers,
^(B)yes, for all the joyous houses
    in the exultant city.

¹³ Harness the steeds to the chariots,
    inhabitants of ^(A)Lachish;
it was the beginning of sin
    to the daughter of Zion,
for in you were found
    ^(B)the transgressions of Israel.
