The Coming Exile

Israel, do not rejoice jubilantly as the nations do,(A)
for you have acted promiscuously,(B) leaving your God.
You love the wages of a prostitute
on every grain-threshing floor.(C)
Threshing floor and wine vat will not sustain them,(D)
and the new wine will fail them.
They will not stay in the land of the Lord.
Instead, Ephraim will return to Egypt,(E)
and they will eat unclean food(F) in Assyria.(G)
They will not pour out
their wine offerings to the Lord,(H)
and their sacrifices will not please him.
Their food will be like the bread of mourners;
all who eat it become defiled.(I)
For their bread will be for their appetites alone;
it will not enter the house of the Lord.
What will you do on a festival day,(J)
on the day of the Lord’s feast?(K)
For even if they flee from devastation,
Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them.(L)
Thistles will take possession of their precious silver;
thorns will invade their tents.(M)
The days of punishment have come;(N)
the days of retribution have come.(O)
Let Israel recognize it!
The prophet is a fool,(P)
and the inspired man is insane,(Q)
because of the magnitude
of your iniquity and hostility.(R)
Ephraim’s watchman is with my God.
Yet the prophet encounters a bird trap
on all his pathways.(S)
Hostility is in the house of his God!
They have deeply corrupted themselves(T)
as in the days of Gibeah.(U)
He will remember their iniquity;
he will punish their sins.(V)

Ephraim Bereaved of Offspring

10 I discovered Israel
like grapes in the wilderness.(W)
I saw your ancestors
like the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season.(X)
But they went to Baal-peor,(Y)
consecrated themselves to Shame,[a](Z)
and became abhorrent,(AA)
like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird:(AB)
no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.(AC)
12 Even if they raise children,
I will bereave them of each one.
Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!(AD)
13 I have seen Ephraim like Tyre,(AE)
planted in a meadow,
so Ephraim will bring out his children
to the executioner.
14 Give them, Lord
What should you give?
Give them a womb that miscarries
and breasts that are dry!(AF)

15 All their evil appears at Gilgal,(AG)
for there I began to hate them.
I will drive them from my house
because of their evil, wicked actions.(AH)
I will no longer love them;
all their leaders are rebellious.(AI)
16 Ephraim(AJ) is struck down;
their roots are withered;
they cannot bear fruit.(AK)
Even if they bear children,
I will kill the precious offspring of their wombs.(AL)
17 My God will reject them
because they have not listened to him;(AM)
they will become wanderers among the nations.(AN)

Punishment for Israel

“Don’t celebrate, Israel, like other nations would rejoice,
because you left your God by committing fornication,
        loving the profit you gained on all of the threshing floors.
Neither threshing floor nor winepress will sustain them,
    and the new wine will disappoint her.
They will not live in the Lord’s land—
    Ephraim will return to Egypt,
        and they will eat unclean food in Assyria.
They won’t present wine offerings to the Lord,
    nor will they please him.
Their sacrifices will seem like food for mourners—
    everyone who eats them will become unclean;
        none of them will enter the Temple of the Lord.

“What will you do on the designated holiday,
    when the Lord’s festival comes?
Look! They have gone away because of the destruction—
    Egypt will gather them up,
        and Memphis[a] will bury them.
Weeds will overgrow their inheritance,[b]
    and thorns will grow[c] in their tents.
The time for your judgment has now come;
    payday is here—
        and Israel knows it.
The prophet is a fool,
    and the spiritual man is insane.
Because of your great sin,
    the hatred against you[d] is great.
While Ephraim stands watch with my God,
    the prophet has snares set that will trap his ways,
        and hostility lodges in the Temple of his God.
They have corrupted themselves deeply,
    as did Gibeah[e] in its day.
Therefore God[f] will remember their lawlessness,
    and he will pay them back for their sins.

10 “I found Israel,
    as one finds[g] grapes in the wilderness;
Your ancestors seemed to me like the fruit
    gleaned from a fig tree’s first harvest.
When they went to Baal-peor,[h]
    they devoted themselves to that filth,
and they became loathsome,
    like what they loved.
11 The glory of Ephraim will fly away like a bird—
    no birth, no pregnancy, not even a conception.
12 Even if they rear their children,
    I will, in turn, make them childless—
in fact, woe to them
    when I turn away from them!
13 Ephraim, as I see it, is like Tyre,
    planted in a comfortable place;
Ephraim will bear children
    but they will be executed.”

14 Give them, Lord
    What will you give?
        You will give them a womb that miscarries and dry breasts.

15 “All of their wickedness started[i] in Gilgal,
    because I began to hate them there.
Because of the wickedness of their behavior,
    I will drive them from my Temple.
I will not love them anymore;
    all their leaders are rebels.
16 Ephraim is blighted;[j]
    its roots shriveled.
        It can bear no fruit.
Even if they bear children,
    I will kill their cherished offspring.

17 “My God will reject them,
    because they did not obey him,
        and they will become wanderers among the nations.”
