The Lord Will Restore Israel

25 “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Now (A)I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on (B)the whole house of Israel, and (C)I will be jealous for my holy name. 26 They shall (D)forget their shame and all the treachery they have practiced against me, when (E)they dwell securely in their land with (F)none to make them afraid, 27 (G)when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from their enemies' lands, (H)and through them have vindicated my holiness in the sight of many nations. 28 (I)Then they shall know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations and then assembled them into their own land. I Will Be Their God; They Shall Be My People

15 The word of the Lord came to me: 16 (J)“Son of man, (K)take a stick[a] and write on it, ‘For (L)Judah, and (M)the people of Israel associated with him’; then take another stick and write on it, ‘For (N)Joseph (the stick of (O)Ephraim) and all the house of Israel associated with him.’ 17 And (P)join them one to another into one stick, that (Q)they may become (R)one in your hand. 18 And when (S)your people say to you, (T)‘Will you not tell us what you mean by these?’ 19 say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am about to take (U)the stick of Joseph (that is in the hand of Ephraim) and the tribes of Israel associated with him. And I will join with it the (V)stick of Judah,[b] and (W)make them one stick, (X)that they may be one in my hand. 20 When the sticks on which you write are in your hand (Y)before their eyes, 21 then say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, (Z)I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and (AA)bring them to their own land. 22 And (AB)I will make them one nation in the land, on (AC)the mountains of Israel. And (AD)one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer (AE)two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms. 23 (AF)They shall not (AG)defile themselves anymore (AH)with their idols and their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions. But (AI)I will save them from all the backslidings[c] in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them; and (AJ)they shall be my people, and I will be their God.

24 “My servant (AK)David (AL)shall be king over them, and they shall all have (AM)one shepherd. (AN)They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes. 25 (AO)They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children's children shall dwell there (AP)forever, and David my servant shall be their prince (AQ)forever. 26 (AR)I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be (AS)an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land[d] and (AT)multiply them, and will (AU)set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. 27 (AV)My dwelling place shall be with them, (AW)and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 28 Then (AX)the nations will know that (AY)I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when (AZ)my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.”

The Lord's Eternal Covenant with David

14 (X)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when (Y)I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous (Z)Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved, (AA)and Jerusalem will dwell securely. 19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 20 (AE)“Thus says the Lord: (AF)If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, (AG)so that day and night will not come at their appointed time, 21 (AH)then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. 22 As (AI)the host of heaven cannot be numbered and (AJ)the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.”

23 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 24 “Have you not observed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two clans that he chose’? The Lord Will Turn Mourning to Joy

31 (A)“At that time, declares the Lord, (B)I will be the God of all the clans of Israel, and they shall be my people.”

Thus says the Lord:
“The people who survived the sword
    found grace in the wilderness;
(C)when Israel sought for rest,
    the Lord appeared to him[a] from far away.
(D)I have loved you with an everlasting love;
    therefore (E)I have continued (F)my faithfulness to you.
(G)Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
    O virgin Israel!
(H)Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines
    and shall go forth in (I)the dance of the merrymakers.
(J)Again you shall plant vineyards
    on the mountains of Samaria;
the planters shall plant
    and shall enjoy the fruit.
For there shall be a day when watchmen will call
    in (K)the hill country of Ephraim:
(L)‘Arise, and let us go up to Zion,
    to the Lord our God.’”

For thus says the Lord:
(M)“Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob,
    and raise shouts for (N)the chief of the nations;
proclaim, give praise, and say,
    (O)‘O Lord, save your people,
    the remnant of Israel.’
Behold, I will bring them (P)from the north country
    and (Q)gather them from (R)the farthest parts of the earth,
among them (S)the blind and the lame,
    the pregnant woman and she who is in labor, together;
    a great company, they shall return here.
(T)With weeping they shall come,
    (U)and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back,
I will make them (V)walk by brooks of water,
    (W)in a straight path in which they shall not stumble,
for (X)I am a father to Israel,
    and Ephraim is (Y)my firstborn.

10 “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations,
    and declare it in the coastlands far away;
say, ‘He who scattered Israel will (Z)gather him,
    and will keep him (AA)as a shepherd keeps his flock.’
11 (AB)For the Lord has ransomed Jacob
    and has redeemed him from (AC)hands too strong for him.
12 They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion,
    (AD)and they shall be radiant (AE)over the goodness of the Lord,
(AF)over the grain, the wine, and the oil,
    and over the young of the flock and the herd;
(AG)their life shall be like a watered garden,
    (AH)and they shall languish no more.
13 (AI)Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance,
    and the young men and the old shall be merry.
(AJ)I will turn their mourning into joy;
    I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.
14 (AK)I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance,
    and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness,
declares the Lord.”

15 Thus says the Lord:
(AL)“A voice is heard in (AM)Ramah,
    lamentation and bitter weeping.
(AN)Rachel is weeping for her children;
    she refuses to be comforted for her children,
    (AO)because they are no more.”

16 Thus says the Lord:
“Keep your voice from weeping,
    and your eyes from tears,
for there is a reward for your work,
declares the Lord,
    and (AP)they shall come back from the land of the enemy.
17 (AQ)There is hope for your future,
declares the Lord,
    and your children shall come back to their own country.
18 I have heard (AR)Ephraim grieving,
‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined,
    like an untrained calf;
(AS)bring me back that I may be restored,
    for you are the Lord my God.
19 For after (AT)I had turned away, I relented,
    and after I was instructed, (AU)I struck my thigh;
(AV)I was ashamed, and I was confounded,
    because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 (AW)Is Ephraim my dear son?
    (AX)Is he my darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
    I do remember him still.
(AY)Therefore my heart[b] yearns for him;
    I will surely have mercy on him,
declares the Lord.

21 (AZ)“Set up road markers for yourself;
    make yourself guideposts;
(BA)consider well the highway,
    (BB)the road by which you went.
Return, O virgin Israel,
    return to these your cities.
22 (BC)How long will you waver,
    (BD)O faithless daughter?
For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth:
    a woman encircles a man.”

23 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Once more they shall use these words in the land of Judah and in its cities, (BE)when I restore their fortunes:

(BF)“‘The Lord bless you, (BG)O habitation of righteousness,
    (BH)O holy hill!’

24 (BI)And Judah and all its cities shall dwell there together, and (BJ)the farmers and those who wander with their flocks. 25 For I will (BK)satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.”

26 At this I awoke and looked, and my sleep was pleasant to me.

27 (BL)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when (BM)I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with (BN)the seed of man and the seed of beast. 28 And it shall come to pass that (BO)as I have watched over them (BP)to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy, and bring harm, (BQ)so I will watch over them (BR)to build and to plant, declares the Lord. 29 In those days they shall no longer say:

(BS)“‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
    and the children's teeth are set on edge.’

30 (BT)But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

The New Covenant

31 (BU)“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make (BV)a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when (BW)I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, (BX)though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 (BY)For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: (BZ)I will put my law within them, and I will write it (CA)on their hearts. (CB)And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ (CC)for they shall all know me, (CD)from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For (CE)I will forgive their iniquity, and (CF)I will remember their sin no more.”

35 Thus says the Lord,
who (CG)gives the sun for light by day
    and (CH)the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night,
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—
    (CI)the Lord of hosts is his name:
36 (CJ)“If this fixed order departs
    from before me, declares the Lord,
then shall the offspring of Israel cease
    from being a nation before me forever.”

37 Thus says the Lord:
“If the heavens above can be measured,
    and the foundations of the earth below can be explored,
(CK)then I will cast off all the offspring of Israel
    for all that they have done,
declares the Lord.”

18 “Thus says the Lord:
Behold, (A)I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob
    and have compassion on his dwellings;
the city shall be rebuilt on (B)its mound,
    and the palace shall stand where it used to be.
19 (C)Out of them shall come songs of thanksgiving,
    and the voices of those who celebrate.
(D)I will multiply them, and they shall not be few;
    I will make them honored, and they shall not be small.
20 (E)Their children shall be as they were of old,
    and their congregation shall be established before me,
    and I will punish all who oppress them.
21 (F)Their prince shall be one of themselves;
    (G)their ruler shall come out from their midst;
(H)I will make him draw near, and he shall approach me,
    (I)for who would dare of himself to approach me?
declares the Lord.
22 (J)And you shall be my people,
    and I will be your God.”

The Lord Will Restore Israel

12 Go, and proclaim these words toward (A)the north, and say,

(B)“‘Return, faithless Israel,
declares the Lord.
I will not look on you in anger,
    for (C)I am merciful,
declares the Lord;
(D)I will not be angry forever.
13 (E)Only acknowledge your guilt,
    that you rebelled against the Lord your God
and scattered your favors among foreigners under (F)every green tree,
    and that you have not obeyed my voice,
declares the Lord.
14 (G)Return, O faithless children,
declares the Lord;
    (H)for I am your master;
I will take you, one from a city and two from a family,
    and I will bring you to Zion.

15 “‘And (I)I will give you shepherds after my own heart, (J)who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. 16 And when you have multiplied and been fruitful in the land, in those days, declares the Lord, they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of the Lord.” It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again. 17 At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, (K)and all nations shall gather to it, (L)to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart. 18 (M)In those days the house of Judah shall join the house of Israel, and together they shall come from the land (N)of the north to (O)the land that I gave your fathers for a heritage.

19 “‘I said,
    How I would set you among my sons,
and give you a pleasant land,
    a heritage most beautiful of all nations.
And I thought you would (P)call me, My Father,
    and would not turn from following me.
20 (Q)Surely, as a treacherous wife leaves her husband,
    so have you been treacherous to me, O house of Israel,
declares the Lord.’”

21 A voice on the (R)bare heights is heard,
    (S)the weeping and pleading of Israel's sons
because they have perverted their way;
    they have forgotten the Lord their God.
22 (T)“Return, O faithless sons;
    (U)I will heal your faithlessness.”
“Behold, we come to you,
    for you are the Lord our God.
23 Truly (V)the hills are a delusion,
    the orgies[a] on the mountains.
(W)Truly in the Lord our God
    is the salvation of Israel.

24 “But from our youth the shameful thing has devoured all for which our fathers labored, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
