Hoffnung für Alle

39 Du Mensch, richte Gog, dem obersten Herrscher über Meschech und Tubal, aus, was ich ihm zu sagen habe:

Jetzt bekommst du es mit mir, Gott, dem Herrn, zu tun! 2 Ich lenke dich und zwinge dich zu gehen, wohin ich will; vom äußersten Norden lasse ich dich ins Bergland Israel ziehen. 3 Dort schlage ich dir den Bogen aus der linken Hand und lasse dir die Pfeile aus der rechten Hand gleiten. 4-5 In den Bergen von Israel wirst du in der Schlacht fallen, und mit dir alle deine Soldaten aus den anderen Völkern. Auf dem freien Feld liegen eure Leichen herum, ich gebe sie den Raubvögeln aller Art und den wilden Tieren zum Fraß. Das sage ich, Gott, der Herr. Mein Wort gilt!

6 Ich lege Feuer in den Städten von Magog und in den Küstenländern, deren Bewohner sich so sicher fühlen. Dann müssen sie einsehen, dass ich der Herr bin. 7 Inmitten meines Volkes Israel erweise ich mich als der heilige Gott. Ich lasse nicht länger zu, dass mein Name in den Schmutz gezogen wird, sondern sorge dafür, dass die Völker erkennen, dass ich der Herr bin, der heilige Gott Israels. 8 Ja, der Tag kommt, an dem ich Gericht über sie halten werde. Dann wird alles so eintreffen, wie ich es angekündigt habe. Darauf gebe ich, Gott, der Herr, mein Wort!«

Gog und sein Heer werden bestattet

9 »Die Einwohner der Städte Israels werden aufs Schlachtfeld gehen und dort die Waffen ihrer Feinde einsammeln. Mit den Schilden, Bogen und Pfeilen, den Keulen und Lanzen können sie sieben Jahre lang Feuer machen. 10 Sie brauchen kein Holz mehr auf den Feldern zu suchen, und im Wald müssen sie keine Bäume mehr fällen. Denn die Waffen ihrer Feinde sind Brennholz genug! Nun werden sie diejenigen plündern und berauben, die das Gleiche mit ihnen tun wollten. Darauf gebe ich, Gott, der Herr, mein Wort.

11 In jener Zeit bestimme ich einen Ort, wo Gog begraben werden soll: Es ist das Tal Abarim (›Tal der Durchreisenden‹) östlich vom Toten Meer[a]. Mit Gog wird auch sein ganzes Heer dort bestattet, darum kann man das Tal nicht mehr betreten. Von da an heißt es Tal Hamon Gog (›Tal der Truppen Gogs‹). 12 Sieben Monate werden die Israeliten brauchen, um alle Leichen dort zu begraben, damit das Land nicht länger unrein ist. 13 Das ganze Volk wird dabei helfen. Dann wird man Israel rühmen, weil ich vor aller Augen meine Herrlichkeit offenbart habe. Das verspreche ich, Gott, der Herr.

14 Nach diesen sieben Monaten werden die Israeliten Männer damit beauftragen, durch das ganze Land zu ziehen. Sie sollen überall nach Gefallenen suchen, die noch nicht begraben wurden. Denn auch sie müssen bestattet werden, damit das Land nicht länger unrein ist. 15 Wenn diese Männer nun irgendwo auch nur einen Menschenknochen finden, sollen sie die Stelle kennzeichnen, damit die Totengräber ihn im Tal Hamon Gog bestatten können. 16 Auf diese Weise wird das ganze Land wieder rein. Auch eine Stadt in Israel wird nach den gefallenen Soldaten Gogs ›Hamona‹ genannt werden.«

17 Gott, der Herr, sprach zu mir: »Du Mensch, rufe alle Vögel und die wilden Tiere herbei: Kommt von überall her, versammelt euch im Bergland Israel! Denn dort bereite ich ein großes Opfermahl für euch zu, kommt, fresst Fleisch und trinkt Blut! 18 Ja, fresst das Fleisch von kampferprobten Soldaten, und trinkt das Blut von mächtigen Herrschern! Sie alle werden geschlachtet wie Opfertiere, wie Schafböcke, Lämmer und Ziegenböcke, wie Stiere und gemästete Rinder aus Baschan. 19 Fresst euch satt an ihrem Fett, berauscht euch am Blut der Opfer, die ich für euch geschlachtet habe! 20 An meinem Tisch könnt ihr essen, so viel ihr wollt, von Pferden, Reitern, Heerführern und Soldaten. Mein Wort gilt!«

Ich wende Israels Schicksal zum Guten!

21 »Wenn ich Gericht gehalten habe über Gog und sein Heer, wenn ich mein Urteil an ihm vollstreckt habe, werden die anderen Völker meine Macht und Herrlichkeit sehen. 22 Und auch die Israeliten werden erkennen, dass ich der Herr, ihr Gott, bin. Nie mehr werden sie das vergessen.

23 Dann begreifen die anderen Völker, dass die Israeliten wegen ihrer Schuld in die Verbannung gehen mussten. Weil sie mir untreu geworden sind, habe auch ich mich von ihnen abgewandt und sie in die Gewalt ihrer Feinde gegeben. Alle ihre Soldaten fielen im Krieg. 24 Ja, wegen ihres Götzendienstes und ihrer schmutzigen Taten habe ich sie verlassen und sie so behandelt, wie sie es verdienten.

25 Doch jetzt sage ich, Gott, der Herr: Ich wende das Schicksal meines Volkes zum Guten und habe Erbarmen mit ihnen, den Nachkommen von Jakob. Mit ganzer Kraft setze ich mich dafür ein, dass mein heiliger Name wieder geehrt wird. 26 Wenn die Israeliten sicher und in Frieden in ihrem Land leben, dann werden sie sich schämen, weil sie mir untreu waren. 27 Ich bringe sie zurück aus den Ländern ihrer Feinde, und so beweise ich vor aller Welt, dass ich ein heiliger Gott bin. 28 Nach langer Zeit der Verbannung lasse ich mein Volk wieder in seinem Land wohnen, keiner von ihnen bleibt zurück. Dann werden sie erkennen, dass ich der Herr, ihr Gott, bin. 29 Ich erfülle die Israeliten mit meinem Geist und wende mich nie mehr von ihnen ab. Darauf gebe ich, Gott, der Herr, mein Wort.«

39 “Son of man, prophesy against Gog(A) and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of[a] Meshek(B) and Tubal.(C) 2 I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north(D) and send you against the mountains of Israel.(E) 3 Then I will strike your bow(F) from your left hand and make your arrows(G) drop from your right hand. 4 On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds(H) and to the wild animals.(I) 5 You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.(J) 6 I will send fire(K) on Magog(L) and on those who live in safety in the coastlands,(M) and they will know(N) that I am the Lord.

7 “‘I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned,(O) and the nations will know(P) that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel.(Q) 8 It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord. This is the day(R) I have spoken of.

9 “‘Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up—the small and large shields, the bows and arrows,(S) the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel.(T) 10 They will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut it from the forests, because they will use the weapons for fuel. And they will plunder(U) those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign Lord.(V)

11 “‘On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried(W) there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog.[b](X)

12 “‘For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land.(Y) 13 All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I display my glory(Z) will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign Lord. 14 People will be continually employed in cleansing the land. They will spread out across the land and, along with others, they will bury any bodies that are lying on the ground.

“‘After the seven months they will carry out a more detailed search. 15 As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of Hamon Gog, 16 near a town called Hamonah.[c] And so they will cleanse the land.’

17 “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call out to every kind of bird(AA) and all the wild animals: ‘Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood.(AB) 18 You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan.(AC) 19 At the sacrifice(AD) I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk. 20 At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,’ declares the Sovereign Lord.(AE)

21 “I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them.(AF) 22 From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. 23 And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.(AG) 24 I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offenses, and I hid my face from them.(AH)

25 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob[d](AI) and will have compassion(AJ) on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name.(AK) 26 They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed toward me when they lived in safety(AL) in their land with no one to make them afraid.(AM) 27 When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations.(AN) 28 Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them(AO) to their own land, not leaving any behind.(AP) 29 I will no longer hide my face(AQ) from them, for I will pour out my Spirit(AR) on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AS)”

39 And you, son of man, prophesy against Gog, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince (ruler) of Rosh, of Meshech, and of Tubal.

2 And I will turn you about and will lead you on, and will cause you to come up from the uttermost parts of the north and will lead you against the mountains of Israel;

3 And I will smite your bow from your left hand and will cause your arrows to fall out of your right hand.

4 You shall fall [dead] upon the mountains of Israel, you and all your hosts and the peoples who are with you. I will give you to the ravenous birds of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.

5 You shall fall in the open field, for I have spoken [it], says the Lord God.

6 I will send fire on Magog and upon those who dwell securely in the coastlands, and they shall know, understand, and realize that I am the Lord [the Sovereign Ruler, Who calls forth loyalty and obedient service].

7 And I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them profane My holy name any more; and the nations shall know, understand, and realize that I am the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

8 Behold, it is coming and it will be done, says the Lord God; that is the day of which I have spoken.

9 And [when you, Gog, are no longer] they who dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth and shall set on fire and burn the battle gear, the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, the handspikes or riding whips and the spears; and they shall burn them as fuel for seven years,

10 So that My people shall take no firewood out of the field or cut down any out of the forests, for they shall make their fires of the weapons. And they shall despoil those who despoiled them and plunder those who plundered them, says the Lord God.

11 And in that day, I will give to Gog a place for burial there in Israel, the valley of those who pass through on the east side in front of the [Dead] Sea [the highway between Syria, Petra, and Egypt], and it will delay and stop those who pass through. And there shall they [a]bury Gog and all his multitude, and they shall call it the Valley of Hamon-gog [multitude of Gog].

12 For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, that they may cleanse the land.

13 Yes, all the people of the land will bury them, and it shall bring them renown in the day that I shall be glorified, says the Lord God.

14 And they shall set apart men to work continually who shall pass through the land, men commissioned to bury, with the help of those who are passing by, those bodies that lie unburied on the face of the ground, in order to cleanse the land. After the end of seven months they shall make their search.

15 And when these pass through the land and anyone sees a human bone, he shall set up a marker by it as a sign to the buriers, until they have buried it in the Valley of Hamon-gog or of Gog’s multitude.

16 And Hamonah [multitude] shall also be the name of the city [of the dead]. Thus shall they cleanse the land.

17 And you, son of man, thus says the Lord God: Say to the birds of prey of every sort and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves and come, gather from every side to the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you, even a great sacrificial feast on the mountains of Israel at which you may eat flesh and drink blood.

18 You shall eat the flesh of the mighty and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, of goats, and of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan [east of the Jordan].

19 And you shall eat fat till you are filled and drink blood till you are drunk at the sacrificial feast which I am preparing for you.

20 And you shall be filled at My table with horses and riders, with mighty men, and with soldiers of every kind, says the Lord God.

21 And I will manifest My honor and glory among the nations, and all the nations shall see My judgment and justice [in the punishment] which I have executed and My hand which I have laid on them.

22 So the house of Israel shall know, understand, and realize beyond all question that I am the Lord their God from that day forward.

23 And the nations shall know, understand, and realize positively that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they trespassed against Me; and I hid My face from them. So I gave them into the hand of their enemies and they all fell [into captivity or were slain] by the power of the sword.(A)

24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions I dealt with them and hid My face from them.

25 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Now will I reverse the captivity of Jacob and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel and will be jealous for My holy name.

26 They shall forget their shame and self-reproach and all their treachery and unfaithfulness in which they have transgressed against Me, when they dwell securely in their land and there is none who makes them afraid.

27 When I have brought them again from the peoples and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and My justice and holiness are set apart and vindicated through them in the sight of many nations,

28 Then shall they know, understand, and realize positively that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them into captivity and exile among the nations and then gathered them to their own land. I will leave none of them remaining among the nations any more [in the latter days].

29 Neither will I hide My face any more then from them, when I have poured out My Spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord God.

  1. Ezekiel 39:11 The number of dead bodies left after the great catastrophe which God will send upon Gog and his hosts would necessarily amount to several millions. Their graves would naturally interfere with traffic on the interstate highway. The dead will not be slain in battle. God will slay them by a great “cosmic catastrophe” (Ezek. 38:18-23). And not just some, but “all” of Gog’s multitude will die then (Ezek. 39:4, 11); before they have had a chance to use their weapons, God will strike them from their hands (Ezek. 39:3). That one-sixth of the horde from the north will be left alive, as the King James Version says (Ezek. 39:2), is without noted exception conceded to be a mistaken translation by all authorities of modern times.

21 “And (AV)I will set my glory among the nations, and all the nations shall see (AW)my judgment that I have executed, and (AX)my hand that I have laid on them. 22 (AY)The house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God, from that day forward. 23 And (AZ)the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they dealt so treacherously with me that (BA)I hid my face from them and (BB)gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword. 24 I dealt with them (BC)according to their uncleanness and their transgressions, and hid my face from them.

The Lord Will Restore Israel

25 “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Now (BD)I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on (BE)the whole house of Israel, and (BF)I will be jealous for my holy name. 26 They shall (BG)forget their shame and all the treachery they have practiced against me, when (BH)they dwell securely in their land with (BI)none to make them afraid, 27 (BJ)when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from their enemies' lands, (BK)and through them have vindicated my holiness in the sight of many nations. 28 (BL)Then they shall know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations and then assembled them into their own land. I will leave none of them remaining among the nations anymore. 29 (BM)And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when (BN)I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord God.”
