38 Und des HERRN Wort geschah zu mir und sprach:
2 Du Menschenkind, wende dich gegen Gog, der im Lande Magog ist und der oberste Fürst in Mesech und Thubal, und weissage von ihm
3 und sprich: So spricht der HERR HERR: Siehe, ich will an dich Gog! der du der oberste Fürst bist in Mesech und Thubal.
4 Siehe, ich will dich herumlenken und will dir einen Zaum ins Maul legen und will dich herausführen mit allem deinem Heer, Roß und Mann, die alle wohl gekleidet sind; und ihrer ist ein großer Haufe, die alle Tartsche und Schild und Schwert führen.
5 Du führst mit dir Perser, Mohren und Libyer, die alle Schild und Helm führen,
6 dazu Gomer und all sein Heer samt dem Hause Thogarma, so gegen Mitternacht liegt, mit all seinem Heer; ja, du führst ein großes Volk mit dir.
7 Wohlan, rüste dich wohl, du und alle deine Haufen, so bei dir sind, und sei du ihr Hauptmann!
8 Nach langer Zeit sollst du heimgesucht werden. Zur letzten Zeit wirst du kommen in das Land, das vom Schwert wiedergebracht und aus vielen Völkern zusammengekommen ist, nämlich auf die Berge Israels, welche lange Zeit wüst gewesen sind; und nun ist es ausgeführt aus den Völkern, und wohnen alle sicher.
9 Du wirst heraufziehen und daherkommen mit großem Ungestüm; und wirst sein wie eine Wolke, das Land zu bedecken, du und all dein Heer und das große Volk mit dir.
10 So spricht der HERR HERR: Zu der Zeit wirst du solches vornehmen und wirst Böses im Sinn haben
11 und gedenken: "Ich will das Land ohne Mauern überfallen und über sie kommen, so still und sicher wohnen, als die alle ohne Mauern dasitzen und haben weder Riegel noch Tore",
12 auf daß du rauben und plündern mögest und dein Hand lassen gehen über die verstörten Örter, so wieder bewohnt sind, und über das Volk, so aus den Heiden zusammengerafft ist und sich in die Nahrung und Güter geschickt hat und mitten auf der Erde wohnt.
13 Das reiche Arabien, Dedan und die Kaufleute von Tharsis und alle Gewaltigen, die daselbst sind, werden dir sagen: Ich meine ja, du seist recht gekommen, zu rauben, und hast deine Haufen versammelt, zu plündern, auf daß du wegnimmst Silber und Gold und sammelst Vieh und Güter, und großen Raub treibest.
14 Darum so weissage, du Menschenkind, und sprich zu Gog: So spricht der HERR HERR: Ist's nicht also, daß du wirst merken, wenn mein Volk Israel sicher wohnen wird?
15 So wirst du kommen aus deinem Ort, von den Enden gegen Mitternacht, du und großes Volk mit dir, alle zu Rosse, ein großer Haufe und ein mächtiges Heer,
16 und wirst heraufziehen über mein Volk Israel wie eine Wolke, das Land zu bedecken. Solches wird zur letzten Zeit geschehen. Ich will dich aber darum in mein Land kommen lassen, auf daß die Heiden mich erkennen, wie ich an dir, o Gog, geheiligt werde vor ihren Augen.
17 So spricht der HERR HERR: Du bist's, von dem ich vorzeiten gesagt habe durch meine Diener, die Propheten in Israel, die zur selben Zeit weissagten, daß ich dich über sie kommen lassen wollte.
18 Und es wird geschehen zu der Zeit, wann Gog kommen wird über das Land Israel, spricht der HERR HERR, wird heraufziehen mein Zorn in meinem Grimm.
19 Und ich rede solches in meinem Eifer und im Feuer meines Zorns. Denn zur selben Zeit wird großes Zittern sein im Lande Israel,
20 daß vor meinem Angesicht zittern sollen die Fische im Meer, die Vögel unter dem Himmel, die Tiere auf dem Felde und alles, was sich regt und bewegt auf dem Lande, und alle Menschen, so auf der Erde sind; und sollen die Berge umgekehrt werden und die Felswände und alle Mauern zu Boden fallen.
21 Ich will aber wider ihn herbeirufen das Schwert auf allen meinen Bergen, spricht der HERR HERR, daß eines jeglichen Schwert soll wider den andern sein.
22 Und ich will ihn richten mit Pestilenz und Blut und will regnen lassen Platzregen mit Schloßen, Feuer und Schwefel über ihn und sein Heer und über das große Volk, das mit ihm ist.
23 Also will ich denn herrlich, heilig und bekannt werden vor vielen Heiden, daß sie erfahren sollen, daß ich der HERR bin.

Der Herrscher Gog – ein Feind von Israel
38 Wieder empfing ich eine Botschaft vom Herrn. Er befahl mir: 2 »Du Mensch, blick in die Richtung, wo das Land Magog liegt, und kündige Gog[a], dem obersten Herrscher über die Völker Meschech und Tubal, mein Gericht an. 3 Richte ihm aus, was ich, Gott, der Herr, zu sagen habe:
Gog, du Herrscher über Meschech und Tubal, du bekommst es mit mir zu tun! 4 Ich bohre Haken durch deine Kinnlade und zwinge dich zu gehen, wohin ich will. Mitsamt deinem ganzen Heer führe ich dich aus deinem Land heraus. Riesig ist es, dieses Heer, mit unzähligen Reitern und Pferden; die Soldaten sind prächtig gekleidet und mit Langschilden, Rundschilden und Schwertern bewaffnet. 5 Söldner aus Persien, Äthiopien und Libyen begleiten euch, gut gerüstet mit Schilden und Helmen. 6 Die Truppen aus den Ländern Gomer und Bet-Togarma im äußersten Norden sind ebenfalls dabei, und auch aus vielen anderen Völkern kommen die Soldaten dazu. 7 So halte dich nun bereit, rüste dein ganzes Heer zum Kampf und übernimm die Befehlsgewalt über sie!
8 Es werden zwar noch viele Jahre vergehen, aber dann, in ferner Zukunft, wirst du deinen Auftrag erhalten. Ich werde dich auffordern, ein fremdes Land zu überfallen. Es ist das Bergland Israel, das sich inzwischen vom Krieg erholt hat und dessen Bewohner aus der Verbannung heimgekehrt sind. Lange Zeit war es ein Trümmerfeld, doch nun leben die Menschen dort wieder in Ruhe und Sicherheit.
9 Du wirst mit deinem Heer heranziehen wie ein gewaltiges Unwetter, deine vereinten Truppen bedecken das ganze Land wie eine riesige Wolke. 10 Ich, Gott, der Herr, kündige dir an: In jener Zeit kommen dir böse Gedanken und du schmiedest einen heimtückischen Plan. 11 Du nimmst dir vor, dieses wehrlose Land anzugreifen, dessen Bewohner in Ruhe und Sicherheit leben. Ihre Städte haben keine Mauern und keine verriegelten Tore. 12 Du willst dich an den Israeliten bereichern und viel Beute machen. Die Städte, die einst in Trümmern lagen, willst du erobern und dir das ganze Volk unterwerfen, das nun wieder darin wohnt. Es ist aus fremden Ländern zurückgekehrt, es hat große Viehherden und andere Reichtümer erworben und wohnt nun im bedeutendsten Land der Welt[b]. 13 Die Händler aus Saba, Dedan und Tarsis[c] werden dich fragen: ›Hast du deine Truppen versammelt, um auf Raubzug zu gehen und zu plündern? Willst du Silber und Gold an dich reißen, Viehherden und anderen Besitz erbeuten?‹
14 Du Mensch, richte dem Herrscher Gog aus, was ich, Gott, der Herr, ihm zu sagen habe: Ist es nicht so? Wenn jene Zeit kommt, in der sich mein Volk in Sicherheit wähnt, lässt du dir das nicht entgehen. 15 Jawohl, du wirst aus deinem Land im äußersten Norden aufbrechen, zusammen mit einem großen und mächtigen Heer. Deine Soldaten kommen aus vielen Völkern, sie rücken auf Pferden 16 gegen mein Volk Israel vor und bedecken das Land wie eine riesige Wolke. Am Ende der Zeit wird dies geschehen; dann lasse ich dich mein Land überfallen, damit die anderen Völker meine Macht erkennen. Wenn sie sehen, was ich mit dir tun werde, begreifen sie, dass ich ein heiliger Gott bin. 17 Du bist der Herrscher, dessen Kommen ich, Gott, der Herr, schon vor langer Zeit angekündigt habe. Durch meine Diener, die Propheten, ließ ich voraussagen, dass du Israel in meinem Auftrag angreifen würdest.«
Gott selbst vernichtet den Feind seines Volkes
18 »Ich, Gott, der Herr, kündige an: An dem Tag, an dem Gog mit seinem Heer in Israel einfällt, wird der Zorn in mir aufflammen. 19 Ja, schon jetzt schwöre ich in meinem glühenden Zorn: An diesem Tag soll im ganzen Land die Erde beben! 20 Alle werden dann vor mir zittern: die Menschen und auch die wilden Tiere, die Fische, Vögel und Kriechtiere. Berge brechen auseinander, Felswände stürzen ein, Mauern fallen in sich zusammen.
21 Ich, Gott, der Herr, lasse das Schwert auf den Bergen von Israel wüten und sorge dafür, dass sich Gogs Soldaten gegenseitig umbringen. 22 Ja, ich werde Gog richten mitsamt seinem ganzen Heer und allen, die auf seiner Seite gekämpft haben: Viele von ihnen fallen in der Schlacht oder sterben an der Pest. Ich lasse Wolkenbrüche und Hagel, Feuer und Schwefel auf sie niederfallen. 23 Vor den Augen aller Völker werde ich zeigen, dass ich ein mächtiger und heiliger Gott bin. Dann müssen sie mich als Herrn anerkennen.

38 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2 Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of [a]Magog, the prince of Rosh, of Meshech, and of Tubal, and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince (ruler) of Rosh, of Meshech, and of Tubal.
4 And I will turn you back and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you forth and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them handling swords—
5 Persia, Cush, and Put or Libya with them, all of them with shield and helmet,
6 Gomer and all his hordes, the house of Togarmah in the uttermost parts of the north and all his hordes—many people are with you.
7 You [Gog] be prepared; yes, prepare yourself, you and all your companies that are assembled about you, and you be a guard and a commander for them.
8 After many days you shall be visited and mustered [for service]; in the latter years you shall go against the land that is restored from the ravages of the sword, where people are gathered out of many nations upon the mountains of Israel, which had been a continual waste; but its [people] are brought forth out of the nations and they shall dwell securely, all of them.(A)
9 You shall ascend and come like a storm; you shall be like a cloud to cover the land, you and all your hosts and many people with you.
10 Thus says the Lord God: At the same time thoughts shall come into your mind, and you will devise an evil plan.
11 And you will say, I will go up against an open country [the land of unwalled villages]; I will fall upon those who are at rest, who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take spoil and prey, to turn your hand upon the desolate places now inhabited and assail the people gathered out of the nations, who have obtained livestock and goods, who dwell at the center of the earth [Palestine].
13 Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish, with all their lionlike cubs [or satellite areas], shall say to you, Have you come to take spoil? Have you gathered your hosts to take the prey? To carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take a great spoil?
14 Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog, Thus says the Lord God: In that day when My people Israel dwell securely, will you not know it and be aroused?
15 And you will come from your place out of the uttermost parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great host, a mighty army.
16 And you shall come up against My people Israel like a cloud to cover the land. In the latter days I will bring you against My land, that the nations may know, understand, and realize Me when My holiness shall be vindicated through you [vindicated and honored in your overwhelming destruction], O Gog, before their eyes.
17 Thus says the Lord God: Are you he of whom I have spoken in olden times by My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for years that I would bring you [Gog] against them?
18 But in that day when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, says the Lord God, My wrath shall come up into My nostrils.
19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath have I said, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking or cosmic catastrophe in the land of Israel,
20 So that the fishes of the sea and the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall tremble and shake at My presence; and the mountains shall be thrown down and the steep places shall fall and every wall [natural or artificial] shall fall to the ground.
21 And I will call for a sword against [Gog] throughout all My mountains, says the Lord God, every man’s sword shall be against his brother [over the dividing of booty].
22 And with pestilence and with bloodshed will I enter into judgment with [Gog], and I will rain upon him and upon his hordes and upon the many peoples that are with him torrents of rain and great hailstones, fire and brimstone.(B)
23 Thus will I demonstrate My greatness and My holiness, and I will be recognized, understood, and known in the eyes of many nations; yes, they shall know that I am the Lord [the Sovereign Ruler, Who calls forth loyalty and obedient service].

- Ezekiel 38:2 Gog is a symbolic name, representing the leader of the world powers antagonistic to God (see also Rev. 20:8). Meshech and Tubal are understood to have been the same as the Moschi and Tibareni of the Greeks—tribes that inhabited regions in the Caucasus. Rosh, which some would identify with Russia, must have designated a land and people somewhere in the same area. And therefore the Gog of Ezekiel must be viewed as in some sense the head of the high regions in the northwest of Asia. (Patrick Fairbairn, The Imperial Bible-dictionary).

Prophecy Against Gog
38 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 (A)“Son of man, (B)set your face toward (C)Gog, of the land of (D)Magog, the (E)chief prince of (F)Meshech[a] and (G)Tubal, and (H)prophesy against him 3 and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, (I)I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech[b] and Tubal. 4 (J)And I will turn you about and (K)put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and (L)all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. 5 (M)Persia, (N)Cush, and (O)Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 (P)Gomer and all his (Q)hordes; (R)Beth-togarmah from (S)the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—(T)many peoples are with you.

10 “Thus says the Lord God: On that day, (AE)thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme 11 and say, ‘I will go up against (AF)the land of unwalled villages. I will fall upon (AG)the quiet people who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having no bars or gates,’ 12 to seize spoil and carry off plunder, to turn your hand against (AH)the waste places that are now inhabited, and (AI)the people who were gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, (AJ)who dwell at the center of the earth. 13 (AK)Sheba and (AL)Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all (AM)its leaders[c] will say to you, ‘Have you come to seize spoil? And (BD)the mountains shall be thrown down, and the cliffs shall fall, and every wall shall tumble to the ground. 21 (BE)I will summon a sword against Gog[d] on all my mountains, declares the Lord God. (BF)Every man's sword will be against his brother. 22 With pestilence and bloodshed (BG)I will enter into judgment with him, and (BH)I will rain upon him and (BI)his hordes and the many peoples who are with him (BJ)torrential rains and hailstones, (BK)fire and sulfur. 23 So I will show my greatness and my (BL)holiness and (BM)make myself known in the eyes of many nations.
