El Espíritu Santo desciende en Pentecostés
2 Cuando llegó el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos juntos en el mismo lugar. 2 De repente, vino del cielo un ruido como el de una violenta ráfaga de viento y llenó toda la casa donde estaban reunidos. 3 Aparecieron entonces unas lenguas como de fuego que se repartieron y se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos. 4 Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en diferentes lenguas, según el Espíritu les concedía expresarse.
5 Estaban de visita en Jerusalén judíos piadosos, procedentes de todas las naciones de la tierra. 6 Al oír aquel bullicio, muchos corrieron al lugar y quedaron todos pasmados porque cada uno los escuchaba hablar en su propio idioma. 7 Desconcertados y maravillados, decían: «¿No son galileos todos estos que están hablando? 8 ¿Cómo es que cada uno de nosotros los oye hablar en su lengua materna? 9 Partos, medos y elamitas; habitantes de Mesopotamia, de Judea y de Capadocia, del Ponto y de la provincia de Asia, 10 de Frigia y de Panfilia, de Egipto y de las regiones de Libia cercanas a Cirene; visitantes llegados de Roma; 11 judíos y convertidos al judaísmo; cretenses y árabes: ¡todos por igual los oímos proclamar en nuestra propia lengua las maravillas de Dios!».
12 Desconcertados y perplejos, se preguntaban: «¿Qué quiere decir esto?». 13 Otros se burlaban y decían: «Lo que pasa es que están borrachos».
Pedro se dirige a la multitud
14 Entonces Pedro, con los once, se puso de pie y dijo a voz en cuello: «Compatriotas judíos y todos ustedes que están en Jerusalén, déjenme explicarles lo que sucede; presten atención a lo que voy a decir. 15 Estos no están borrachos, como suponen ustedes. ¡Apenas son las nueve de la mañana![a] 16 En realidad lo que pasa es lo que anunció el profeta Joel:
17 »“Sucederá que en los últimos días —dice Dios—,
derramaré mi Espíritu sobre todo ser humano.
Los hijos y las hijas de ustedes profetizarán,
tendrán visiones los jóvenes
y sueños los ancianos.
18 En esos días derramaré mi Espíritu
aun sobre mis siervos y mis siervas,
y profetizarán.
19 Arriba en el cielo y abajo en la tierra mostraré prodigios:
sangre, fuego y nubes de humo.
20 El sol se convertirá en tinieblas
y la luna en sangre
antes que llegue el día del Señor,
día grande y esplendoroso.
21 Y todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor será salvo”.[b]
22 »Pueblo de Israel, escuchen esto: Jesús de Nazaret fue un hombre acreditado por Dios ante ustedes con milagros, señales y prodigios, los cuales realizó Dios entre ustedes por medio de él, como bien lo saben. 23 Este fue entregado según el determinado propósito y el previo conocimiento de Dios; y por medio de gente malvada, ustedes lo mataron, clavándolo en la cruz. 24 Sin embargo, Dios lo resucitó, librándolo de las angustias de la muerte, porque era imposible que la muerte lo mantuviera bajo su dominio. 25 En efecto, David dijo de él:
»“Veía yo al Señor siempre delante de mí;
porque él está a mi derecha,
nada me hará caer.
26 Por eso mi corazón se alegra y canta con gozo mi lengua;
mi cuerpo también vivirá en esperanza.
27 No dejarás que mi vida termine en los dominios de la muerte;[c]
no permitirás que tu santo sufra corrupción.
28 Me has dado a conocer los caminos de la vida;
me llenarás de alegría en tu presencia”.[d]
29 »Hermanos, permítanme hablarles con franqueza acerca del patriarca David, quien murió y fue sepultado, y cuyo sepulcro está entre nosotros hasta el día de hoy. 30 Era profeta y sabía que Dios le había prometido bajo juramento poner en el trono a uno de sus descendientes.[e] 31 Fue así como previó lo que iba a suceder. Refiriéndose a la resurrección del Cristo, afirmó que Dios no dejaría que su vida terminara en los dominios de la muerte ni que su fin fuera la corrupción. 32 A este Jesús, Dios lo resucitó y de ello todos nosotros somos testigos. 33 Exaltado a la derecha de Dios y, habiendo recibido del Padre el Espíritu Santo prometido, ha derramado esto que ustedes ahora ven y oyen. 34 David no subió al cielo, y sin embargo declaró:
»“Dijo el Señor a mi Señor:
‘Siéntate a mi derecha,
35 hasta que ponga a tus enemigos
por debajo de tus pies’ ”.[f]
36 »Por tanto, que todo Israel esté bien seguro de que este Jesús, a quien ustedes crucificaron, Dios lo ha hecho Señor y Cristo».
37 Cuando oyeron esto, todos se sintieron profundamente conmovidos y dijeron a Pedro y a los otros apóstoles:
—Hermanos, ¿qué debemos hacer?
38 —Arrepiéntase y bautícese cada uno de ustedes en el nombre de Jesucristo para perdón de sus pecados —contestó Pedro—, y recibirán el don del Espíritu Santo. 39 En efecto, la promesa es para ustedes, para sus hijos y para todos los que están lejos; es decir, para todos aquellos a quienes el Señor, nuestro Dios, llame.
40 Y con muchas otras palabras les exhortaba insistentemente:
—¡Sálvense de esta generación perversa!
La comunidad de los creyentes
41 Así, pues, los que recibieron su mensaje fueron bautizados y aquel día se unieron a la iglesia unas tres mil personas. 42 Se mantenían firmes en la enseñanza de los apóstoles, en la comunión, en el partimiento del pan y en la oración. 43 Todos estaban asombrados por los muchos prodigios y señales que realizaban los apóstoles. 44 Todos los creyentes estaban juntos y tenían todo en común: 45 vendían sus propiedades y posesiones, y compartían sus bienes entre sí según la necesidad de cada uno. 46 No dejaban de reunirse unánimes en el Templo ni un solo día. De casa en casa partían el pan y compartían la comida con alegría y generosidad, 47 alabando a Dios y disfrutando de la estimación general del pueblo. Y cada día el Señor añadía al grupo los que iban siendo salvos.

La venida del Espíritu Santo
2 Cuando llegó la fiesta de Pentecostés, todos los creyentes se encontraban reunidos en un mismo lugar. 2 De repente, un gran ruido que venía del cielo, como de un viento fuerte, resonó en toda la casa donde ellos estaban. 3 Y se les aparecieron lenguas como de fuego que se repartieron, y sobre cada uno de ellos se asentó una. 4 Y todos quedaron llenos del Espíritu Santo, y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu hacía que hablaran.
5 Vivían en Jerusalén judíos cumplidores de sus deberes religiosos, que habían venido de todas partes del mundo. 6 La gente se reunió al oír aquel ruido, y no sabía qué pensar, porque cada uno oía a los creyentes hablar en su propia lengua. 7 Eran tales su sorpresa y su asombro, que decían:
—¿Acaso no son galileos todos estos que están hablando? 8 ¿Cómo es que los oímos hablar en nuestras propias lenguas? 9 Aquí hay gente de Partia, de Media, de Elam, de Mesopotamia, de Judea, de Capadocia, del Ponto y de la provincia de Asia, 10 de Frigia y de Panfilia, de Egipto y de las regiones de Libia cercanas a Cirene. Hay también gente de Roma que vive aquí; 11 unos son judíos de nacimiento y otros se han convertido al judaísmo. También los hay venidos de Creta y de Arabia. ¡Y los oímos hablar en nuestras propias lenguas de las maravillas de Dios!
12 Todos estaban asombrados y sin saber qué pensar; y se preguntaban:
—¿Qué significa todo esto?
13 Pero algunos, burlándose, decían:
—¡Es que están borrachos!
Discurso de Pedro
14 Entonces Pedro se puso de pie junto con los otros once apóstoles, y con voz fuerte dijo: «Judíos y todos los que viven en Jerusalén, sepan ustedes esto y oigan bien lo que les voy a decir. 15 Éstos no están borrachos como ustedes creen, ya que apenas son las nueve de la mañana. 16 Al contrario, aquí está sucediendo lo que anunció el profeta Joel, cuando dijo:
17 “Sucederá que en los últimos días, dice Dios,
derramaré mi Espíritu sobre toda la humanidad;
los hijos e hijas de ustedes
comunicarán mensajes proféticos,
los jóvenes tendrán visiones,
y los viejos tendrán sueños.
18 También sobre mis siervos y siervas
derramaré mi Espíritu en aquellos días,
y comunicarán mensajes proféticos.
19 En el cielo mostraré grandes maravillas,
y sangre, fuego y nubes de humo en la tierra.
20 El sol se volverá oscuridad,
y la luna como sangre,
antes que llegue el día del Señor,
día grande y glorioso.
21 Pero todos los que invoquen el nombre del Señor,
alcanzarán la salvación.”
22 »Escuchen, pues, israelitas, lo que voy a decir: Como ustedes saben muy bien, Dios demostró ante ustedes la autoridad de Jesús de Nazaret, haciendo por medio de él grandes maravillas, milagros y señales. 23 Y a ese hombre, que conforme a los planes y propósitos de Dios fue entregado, ustedes lo mataron, crucificándolo por medio de hombres malvados. 24 Pero Dios lo resucitó, liberándolo de los dolores de la muerte, porque la muerte no podía tenerlo dominado. 25 El rey David, refiriéndose a Jesús, dijo:
“Yo veía siempre al Señor delante de mí;
con él a mi derecha, nada me hará caer.
26 Por eso se alegra mi corazón,
y mi lengua canta llena de gozo.
Todo mi ser vivirá confiadamente,
27 porque no me dejarás en el sepulcro
ni permitirás que se descomponga
el cuerpo de tu santo siervo.
28 Me mostraste el camino de la vida,
y me llenarás de alegría con tu presencia.”
29 »Hermanos, permítanme decirles con franqueza que el patriarca David murió y fue enterrado, y que su sepulcro está todavía entre nosotros. 30 Pero David era profeta, y sabía que Dios le había prometido con juramento que pondría por rey a uno de sus descendientes. 31 Así que, viendo anticipadamente la resurrección del Mesías, David habló de ella y dijo que el Mesías no se quedaría en el sepulcro ni su cuerpo se descompondría. 32 Pues bien, Dios ha resucitado a ese mismo Jesús, y de ello todos nosotros somos testigos. 33 Después de haber sido enaltecido y colocado por Dios a su derecha y de haber recibido del Padre el Espíritu Santo que nos había prometido, él a su vez lo derramó sobre nosotros. Eso es lo que ustedes han visto y oído. 34 Porque no fue David quien subió al cielo; pues él mismo dijo:
“El Señor dijo a mi Señor:
Siéntate a mi derecha,
35 hasta que yo haga de tus enemigos el estrado de tus pies.”
36 »Sepa todo el pueblo de Israel, con toda seguridad, que a este mismo Jesús a quien ustedes crucificaron, Dios lo ha hecho Señor y Mesías.»
37 Cuando los allí reunidos oyeron esto, se afligieron profundamente, y preguntaron a Pedro y a los otros apóstoles:
—Hermanos, ¿qué debemos hacer?
38 Pedro les contestó:
—Vuélvanse a Dios y bautícese cada uno en el nombre de Jesucristo, para que Dios les perdone sus pecados, y así él les dará el Espíritu Santo. 39 Porque esta promesa es para ustedes y para sus hijos, y también para todos los que están lejos; es decir, para todos aquellos a quienes el Señor nuestro Dios quiera llamar.
40 Con éstas y otras palabras, Pedro les habló y les aconsejó, diciéndoles:
—¡Apártense de esta gente perversa!
41 Así pues, los que hicieron caso de su mensaje fueron bautizados; y aquel día se agregaron a los creyentes unas tres mil personas. 42 Y eran fieles en conservar la enseñanza de los apóstoles, en compartir lo que tenían, en reunirse para partir el pan y en la oración.
La vida de los primeros cristianos
43 Todos estaban asombrados a causa de los muchos milagros y señales que Dios hacía por medio de los apóstoles. 44 Todos los creyentes estaban muy unidos y compartían sus bienes entre sí; 45 vendían sus propiedades y todo lo que tenían, y repartían el dinero según las necesidades de cada uno. 46 Todos los días se reunían en el templo, y en las casas partían el pan y comían juntos con alegría y sencillez de corazón. 47 Alababan a Dios y eran estimados por todos; y cada día el Señor hacía crecer la comunidad con el número de los que él iba llamando a la salvación.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost(A) came, they were all together(B) in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.(C) 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit(D) and began to speak in other tongues[a](E) as the Spirit enabled them.
5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing(F) Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed,(G) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?(H) 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,(I) Pontus(J) and Asia,[b](K) 10 Phrygia(L) and Pamphylia,(M) Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;(N) visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”(O)
Peter Addresses the Crowd
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning!(P) 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.(Q)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(R)
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.(S)
19 I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,(T)
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
20 The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood(U)
before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.
21 And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord(V) will be saved.’[c](W)
22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth(X) was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,(Y) which God did among you through him,(Z) as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;(AA) and you, with the help of wicked men,[d] put him to death by nailing him to the cross.(AB) 24 But God raised him from the dead,(AC) freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.(AD) 25 David said about him:
“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest in hope,
27 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
you will not let your holy one see decay.(AE)
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.’[e](AF)
29 “Fellow Israelites,(AG) I can tell you confidently that the patriarch(AH) David died and was buried,(AI) and his tomb is here(AJ) to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.(AK) 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.(AL) 32 God has raised this Jesus to life,(AM) and we are all witnesses(AN) of it. 33 Exalted(AO) to the right hand of God,(AP) he has received from the Father(AQ) the promised Holy Spirit(AR) and has poured out(AS) what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.”’[f](AT)
36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord(AU) and Messiah.”(AV)
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”(AW)
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,(AX) every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.(AY) And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 39 The promise is for you and your children(BA) and for all who are far off(BB)—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”(BC) 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number(BD) that day.
The Fellowship of the Believers
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching(BE) and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread(BF) and to prayer.(BG) 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.(BH) 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.(BI) 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.(BJ) 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.(BK) They broke bread(BL) in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.(BM) And the Lord added to their number(BN) daily those who were being saved.

3 and there appeared to them divided tongues, as it were of fire; it sat also upon each one of them,
4 and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, according as the Spirit was giving them to declare.
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation of those under the heaven,
6 and the rumour of this having come, the multitude came together, and was confounded, because they were each one hearing them speaking in his proper dialect,
7 and they were all amazed, and did wonder, saying one unto another, `Lo, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 and how do we hear, each in our proper dialect, in which we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and those dwelling in Mesopotamia, in Judea also, and Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia also, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya, that [are] along Cyrene, and the strangers of Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretes and Arabians, we did hear them speaking in our tongues the great things of God.'
12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one unto another, `What would this wish to be?'
13 and others mocking said, -- `They are full of sweet wine;'
14 and Peter having stood up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and declared to them, `Men, Jews! and all those dwelling in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and harken to my sayings,
15 for these are not drunken, as ye take it up, for it is the third hour of the day.
16 `But this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 And it shall be in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 and also upon My men-servants, and upon My maid-servants, in those days, I will pour out of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy;
19 and I will give wonders in the heaven above, and signs upon the earth beneath -- blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke,
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the day of the Lord -- the great and illustrious;
21 and it shall be, every one -- whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, he shall be saved.
22 `Men, Israelites! hear these words, Jesus the Nazarene, a man approved of God among you by mighty works, and wonders, and signs, that God did through him in the midst of you, according as also ye yourselves have known;
23 this one, by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, being given out, having taken by lawless hands, having crucified -- ye did slay;
24 whom God did raise up, having loosed the pains of the death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it,
25 for David saith in regard to him: I foresaw the Lord always before me -- because He is on my right hand -- that I may not be moved;
26 because of this was my heart cheered, and my tongue was glad, and yet -- my flesh also shall rest on hope,
27 because Thou wilt not leave my soul to hades, nor wilt Thou give Thy Kind One to see corruption;
28 Thou didst make known to me ways of life, Thou shalt fill me with joy with Thy countenance.
29 `Men, brethren! it is permitted to speak with freedom unto you concerning the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is among us unto this day;
30 a prophet, therefore, being, and knowing that with an oath God did swear to him, out of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, to raise up the Christ, to sit upon his throne,
31 having foreseen, he did speak concerning the rising again of the Christ, that his soul was not left to hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
32 `This Jesus did God raise up, of which we are all witnesses;
33 at the right hand then of God having been exalted -- also the promise of the Holy Spirit having received from the Father -- he was shedding forth this, which now ye see and hear;
34 for David did not go up to the heavens, and he saith himself: The Lord saith to my lord, Sit thou at my right hand,
35 till I make thy foes thy footstool;
36 assuredly, therefore, let all the house of Israel know, that both Lord and Christ did God make him -- this Jesus whom ye did crucify.'
37 And having heard, they were pricked to the heart; they say also to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles, `What shall we do, men, brethren?'
38 and Peter said unto them, `Reform, and be baptized each of you on the name of Jesus Christ, to remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit,
39 for to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all those afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call.'
40 Also with many more other words he was testifying and exhorting, saying, `Be saved from this perverse generation;'
41 then those, indeed, who did gladly receive his word were baptized, and there were added on that day, as it were, three thousand souls,
42 and they were continuing stedfastly in the teaching of the apostles, and the fellowship, and the breaking of the bread, and the prayers.
43 And fear came on every soul, many wonders also and signs were being done through the apostles,
44 and all those believing were at the same place, and had all things common,
45 and the possessions and the goods they were selling, and were parting them to all, according as any one had need.
46 Daily also continuing with one accord in the temple, breaking also at every house bread, they were partaking of food in gladness and simplicity of heart,
47 praising God, and having favour with all the people, and the Lord was adding those being saved every day to the assembly.
